  • In this episode, we take a look at my latest pickup, but this isn’t any old run-of-the-mill Arcade Game!
    Get ready for the ultimate arcade experience with SEGA's After Burner Deluxe! I won this arcade game at auction, but it was honestly
    A surprise, since my bid was very low for a game that probably originally cost close to $10,000 MSRP in 1987!
    There are three versions of the After Burner machine, being without a doubt the Deluxe the most spectacular and the one that marked a milestone in the arcade world. This version simulates the entire cockpit of a fighter that rotates both left and right and up and down emulating the movement of plane on screen. Such was realism achieved for the time that for a long time it was the queen of arcade lounges for its spectacular nature.

    Additional Information on Sega's After Burner:
    After Burner is an arcade vehicular combat game developed and released by Sega in 1987. The player assumes control of an American F-14 Tomcat fighter jet, and must clear each of the game's eighteen unique stages by destroying incoming enemies, using both a machine gun and a limited supply of heat-seeking missiles. It uses a third-person perspective, previously utilized by Sega's earlier games Space Harrier (1985) and Out Run (1986), and runs on the Sega X Board arcade system, which is capable of surface and sprite rotation. It is the fourth Sega game to use a hydraulic "taikan" motion simulator arcade cabinet, one that is more elaborate than their earlier "taikan" simulator games. The cabinet simulates an aircraft cockpit, with flight stick controls, a chair with seatbelt, and hydraulic motion technology that moves, tilts, rolls, and rotates the cockpit in sync with the on-screen action.
    Designed by Sega veteran Yu Suzuki and the Sega AM2 division, After Burner was intended as being Sega's first "true blockbuster" video game. Development began in December 1986, shortly after the completion of Out Run, and was kept as a closely guarded secret within the company. Suzuki was inspired by the 1986 films Top Gun and Laputa: Castle in the Sky; he originally planned for the game to have a steampunk aesthetic similar to Laputa, but instead went with a Top Gun look to make the game approachable for worldwide audiences. It was designed outside the company in a building named "Studio 128", due to Sega adopting a flextime schedule to allow for games to be worked outside company headquarters. An updated version with the addition of throttle controls, After Burner II, was released later in the same year.

      @@madmen2288 a deal so good would be wasted if you didn’t have talent to restore this gem! You also point out the other big factor which is family support. Anyone who watches Retro Ralph knows he has this. I think I’d sleep in my car if I had the skill and support to bring an Afterburner cabinet into my home. I’m curious where he’ll fit this behemoth. I can remember playing one of these only once as a kid since it was usually expensive wherever it was (usually set to at least a full dollar a play even at the neighborhood places), so other than that one time I would only ever play the regular cabinet whenever I played After Burner in arcades. Games like this were certainly impressive works of engineering.

      UK sucks for original arcade stuff doesn't it. A lot just got skipped back in the day. Long story short we had a caravan in north Wales and the sea came over and alot of arcades got mild flooding (they added rocks to stop it happening again after that) and greedy arcade owners had skips outside full of machine's with like 6 inches of water damage 🤔 obviously insurance lol. Because I was only a kid and clueless wasn't really bothered like anyone else back then! Heidnsight huh. Outruns, altered beasts you name it 😞

    You can get the motors rebuilt. And if you have all the motors, check the bridges on the motor pcb board. I Have the Commander cab , and replaced the bridges and it was up n running again. Also there should be some switches that look like big arcade button microswitches, that open and close depending on the position of the cab, left, rt, up, down etc. i made a pigtail to attach to the motor molex so i could switch polarity of the motor and change the cabs direction for testing. Just flip the power polarity to the motor and it should move. If the “switches are stuck” it wont allow the cab to move. So i would start there.

    I'm pretty sure there's probably a safety lock engaged I assume it engages when the ride is over there's a possibility is just seized and that's why it won't move I'm pretty It's a safety feature to protect the riders so that they can get out safely I mean I could be wrong but to me it seems like Sega would have included some sort of safety mechanism to prevent the carriage from tilting forward and back and left and right the mechanism could be in The Arms on each side or underneath somewhere with a pin or some sort of locking bar of some sort🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔 one other thing I'm pretty sure the mechanism is also used for when the arcade ride is transported to prevent the ride for moving I could be wrong but it's worth looking into.

    Lol your story is very reminiscent of my Afterburner Climax dlx score. Good luck on the restore! This game is far better with the motion than without.
    FYI, I don't believe the flight stick has feedback as it's usually simulated through the cabinet motion. At least that is how it works in my AB Climax and Outrun dlx.

    • @RetroRalph
      @RetroRalph  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think you're 100% right on the flight stick. I guess that was an upright only thing as the seat kinda moves quickly right to left to simulate that. I'm assuming it does that on your AB Climax. What a great game by the way, I remember seeing your video on that, may I ask, where did you end up scoring that? Anyhow, it's going to be a difficult restore that will test my limits, but I'm confident with a little help, I can get it going again.

      @ForeverLacey09 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RetroRalph I won it on eBay for $700. I was the only bidder and like you didn't believe I would win it lol. It needed a new monitor but apart from that it worked. Most expensive part was shipping but I still got it below cost at the time.
      I'm currently restoring my Outrun which is a lot more intimidating than it really is. They make a reproduction motor drive board for these cabinets if it turns out the motion doesn't work. It's totally doable so don't give up on it. Owning one of these Sega dlx cabinets is truly an honor.

    This is like picking up a cheap, rough but running 1964 Astin Martin DB5. You're basically obligated to restore it. 😂

    Can't wait to see how this project comes along. And dang, it looks like it came from San Marcos, TX, which is like 30-45 minutes away from me.

    FUNSPOT in New Hampshire has one of these fully functional. They also got a Space Harrier sit down motion arcade and the Atari Star wars cockpit version.

    I loved Dream Machine and Aladdin’s Castle, the Pizza Hut on mineral ring had a big red and a Pac-Man cocktail. Miss them all.
    Any relation to the local pizza chain?

    That's super cool. I'd love to find a cockpit Mach 3, or a Deluxe Thunder Blade. Good luck with the restoration!

    hmm I wonder if those motors are tied directly to joystick movement... maybe throw in a PC and run After Burner Climax or Star Wars Battle Pod with some cabinet motion yeahh!

    Electric motors can be rebuilt. If the Stator is bad, it's probably toast but otherwise if it's a capacitor or bearing it probably can be saved. I would look up a local electric motor repair shop.
