But her skin is not just "dark". She is black.
Surely a mother has to somehow learn to distinguish between both (a slightly darker skin resulting from exposure to direct sunlight and a black person) so as not to confuse her child.
      I understand your argument.
I just think it's a good enough excuse to not use the right words in educating children.
Someday, the little girl is going to grow up and discriminate against black people or treat them less because she believes they are just "very poor farmers".
Parents can do better. If our cultural beliefs are harmful or pose a threat of harm, its okay to modify them to be more accommodating and less offensive.

@@iruogheneokoro3372 There is a tricky question in this, because like it or not, Chinese prefer lighter skin, and it 100% does not relate to race. If you have a look on the shelves of cosmetics, you will find tons of products on whitening, and you will found lots of girls will hold a sun-screen umbrella to avoid being exposed to sun, for the purpose of avoiding darkened the skin. I can guarantee you that this mother did not think of Black people when she tried to scare her kid on eating chocolate. There is the risk that this kid grown up with an altitude of associate dark as bad and turned it into a discrimination against black people, but I don’t think the risk will be high. I don’t discriminate, but I still like my skin to be light, and I have at least 2 whitening serum and 1 whitening day cream.

Yeah, that was my problem with the whole chocolate situation. I understand a mother’s concern with regards to the consumption of chocolate. It can be harmful, especially since the mother mentions how it negatively affected her daughter; however, she associated eating chocolate with melanin and that doesn’t sit right with me. She taught her daughter being dark is a bad thing and so to prevent that, one mustn’t consume chocolate. Her mother could’ve used other examples. Now she literally taught this little girl how tan skin is not accepted and is bad. That’s really sad.

To be honest, I felt a little awkward when the mom was trying to persuade her daughter off the idea to get some chocolate in the way by conveying the idea that being black is not good. But still, I understand that this is not real discrimination. Before, the average living condition in China was bad, and only those who does not have to be exposed to the strong sunshine would be able to keep their skin color from being tanned. Hence, being white became a factor for people to judge if people are wealthy or powerful. That is the reason why girls here preferred to have a lighter skin color. Besides, China has always been a country with Han as the majority and the public did not see people of different colors quite often, they have prejudice, but not discrimination. Younger people with more travel experience would be able to understand the different cultures better indeed.

For instance, I learned from the interaction that:
-Knowledge of the local language is a must.
-Ability to speak another ethnic language can come with freebies, especially when you are a foreigner.
-Technology has eased the language barrier in business places, educational institutions, etc.
-Interaction with people prevent you from making an unnecessary generalization.
      - Lastly, the guy's professionalism was top-notch, when compared to the other attendants in the video.

    In fact, in Chinese aesthetics,
dark skin is Biased towards the negative, Especially for girls...
This has nothing to do with black people.
It can also be seen from the video that this child has not seen a black person before this time, so her 'already conditioned to think of dark skin as a negative thing' has nothing to do with black people...
    it‘s just our aesthetics...
All in all, this mother taught her children that eat chocolate will turn black. Obviously it has nothing to do with black people...
As for why the Chinese don't like dark skin, it is very complicated and difficult to study...
    If I have to guess,
it should be because in ancient times,
rich people would do most things indoors, like study, music, draw...and their skin would become paler because of less sun exposure.
Poor people have to work on the ground, or work on the docks, and the sun will be too much, and the skin will be dark...
So for yellow people, dark skin means poor, white means rich...

Chinese people can read simple English, but they can't speak it. Your question can only be answered by others at least twice. English scores in Chinese exams are as high as math scores. Many parents and students suggest reducing scores by one third and increasing Chinese scores by one third. So the total score remains the same.

Don't believe these extreme ideas. Most regions in China are not internationalized. Older citizens are curious about foreigners and have no malice. It is more common for foreigners in big cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen. As the younger generation grows up in prosperity, they will be more confident in themselves and their country, and feel more natural and normal for foreigners to appear in their lives. Most Chinese people are kind and enthusiastic, and shy. It takes time. Please understand, dear~

I have been learning English for over 10 years, still not good. the point is, don’t be too hard on yourself like i was to myself. Without some serious language exposure, it’s not very likely you would have some serious progress. I don’t know what’s your mother tongue, but if you haven’t touched on tonal languages or meaning-based (not sound-based) characters, Chinese would be very hard at the beginning. But as you are at an intermediate level you will see that grammar is relatively easy in Mandarin-no conjugations or verb tenses for example. Hope this helps.

Busola Deborah......
