The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Dino was the greatest. He had perfect timing and creative drum fills. With his jazz training, no one could touch him in the rock world. I love what I call his Copacabana-style finishes. RIP, Dino

The second of three appearances by this amazing group in 1967 (Ed must have loved them too!). A bittersweet video knowing that drummer Dino Danelli passed away just 7 months ago. He inspired me to learn how to play drums as a kid. Love these vintage rock appearances on Sullivan, Keep them coming!

Wow! Dino is the best example of what a drummer can do for a band. More so than Ringo or Charlie, who are both really good.

You have to admire Felix Cavaliere's versatility. He's simultaneously playing the melody on his organ keyboard, the bass line on his pedals and providing a soulful lead vocal. Like the Doors, the Rascals did not have a group member on electric bass.

They came to El Paso Texas & they did have a bass player behind the scenes. Can't remember the year, I was in highschool.
Not to take anything away from Felix's brilliance...he was capable of doing that, and he could do it with amazing fluency...but I don't think he's doing it in this particular clip... There's obviously a horn section off stage, and I'm guessing probably also a bass player... I'm also not certain Gene's guitar is live, because there's no evidence of an amplifier... Drums and vocals clearly are...
@@raphaelmann - the amplifiers were almost always off to the side of the stage on the Sullivan show - never seen.
Musicians actually playing their instruments and singing their as*** off . . . fantastic!

Thank you Steven Van Zandt for putting them back out here for us. They played the Finger Lakes Region years ago. We brought our kids. Drove back home in a blizzard. RIP Dino.
A very talented group that should have got more recognition.
I saw The Rascals in a tiny venue called Hiway Inn in Roosevelt (Long Island), New York, sometime in the mid-60s or so. This was before they became popular and, even then, they were outstanding--- and still are. So, original, so musically forward-looking, so melodious and vibrant, The Rascals are a national treasure--- in every sense of the word.
The vocals and imagination in these songs still stands out as some of the best rock and roll ever.
Great band, and outstanding drummer, Dino Dinelli. RIP Dino.

Mr. Danelli was also my inspiration to drum. I really thought he never got the praise he should have. What a performer ❤

Likewise, I had just started drumming in a garage band when I got to see these guys in 1967. Being an amateur, I immediately sought out a professional jazz drummer to teach me because I knew that Dino was using jazz chops in his playing. What a true inspiration. Pure class. His showmanship was much better in person and his character was always modest. His sticks spoke for him.
Rest in peace, Dino. You made my life better.

Awesome performers The Rascals had everything going on. They were extremely talented, great songs,Felix at the Hammond organ suberb playing bass lines with his feet and incomparable voice, Gene with his Gibson guitar and on harmonica, Eddie another great singer and back up voice and the great Dino Danelli ( R.I.P.) second to none on his Ludwig kit.
Awesome song, I was sixteen years old when this song hit the airwaves....Crank up the volume on the AM radio in the car...With my girlfriend...Best years ever.. A decade long gone.

This started my love for Felix Cavaliere to this day! I remember this day, I was only 16 years old, and his voice just touched my heart! I have the original 45 of this song! Peace & Love ❤

Magnificent Masterpiece from Master Musicians, fellow paisines, 100% Italian, fan of Felix, Dino, Gene and Eddie for 60 years
They did so many great songs. This happens to be my favorite. And glad they are identified as The YOUNG Rascals, not the Rascals!
Saw them live twice in my hometown in the '60's. Always thought they were underappreciated.
This is ironic. I saw them twice, also - first time when I was 16 and a drummer in a garage band. Then I saw them again when I was 20. I saw CTA in 1969 when they opened for Jimi Hendrix (Jimi chose them because he actually admitted to Terry Kath that he thought Terry was a better guitarist than he was (this is in a documentary on Terry). Sad that Terry and Jimi both died so young, but I digress.
The important thing to note is that the Young Rascals aka Rascals were fantastic musicians and warm human beings. Still miss the group and I'm so sad that Dino is gone.

I saw them in 68. They warmed up for Chicago. My first concert and it was fantastic! It was cool growing up with this on the radio. 👍🤠
@crevnoid: I find it hard to believe that the band "Chicago" had The Rascals warming up for it in 1968. The Rascals were an established band at that time. The group "Chicago" had not even released its first album in 1968. Chicago didn't release its first album until 1969 - and had just shortly before then shortened its name to "Chicago" from "Chicago Transit Authority." I would like to know where you saw The Rascals warming up for Chicago in 1968.
I miss the outrageous splashy colors of the 60s! Once color TV took off, so did the fashions of the stars and the rest of us!
Ed Sullivan exposed so many great artists to the general public. This is a guy who looked like he watched Lawrence Welk on repeat but still took great risks on his show (see The Doors). Bandstand and Soul Train were similar but their artists were exactly what we expected.
Love to watch Dino finish. He was the best!

Dino taught Keith Moon how to twirl the sticks...no b.s. Dino right there with Moonie as THE BEST rock 'n roll drummer all time...Buddy Rich....still the KING!

I know it wasn't competitive, art being art, 60's music at it's zenith. But here's to one of at least 4 American music acts to give The Beatles a run for their money!
Listeners of that era benefitted from so many great acts. The Billboard Pop Charts will bear out that the Liverpool group were consistent with fans. I'd like to add The Temptations, The Beach Boys, Frankie Vallie & The Four Seasons.... and this great group performing on The Ed Sullivan Show. The pride of Pelham, New York. And who got their start gigging on Long Island in 1965... THE YOUNG RASCALS!❤

@@recordguy4321 Point taken. Just thought I remembered a late 80's interview with Felix Cavalleri stating that he and the band did some gigs out on Long Island, too.
I also recall Frankie Valli once stating that his group used to be called the Four Lovers. But the group changed their name to Four Seasons in honor of a bowling alley they used to frequent.
The ChooChoo Club on Passaic St. in GARFIELD, NJ. I was there, but was only a little 10yr old boy. I lived in LODI and for a whole week in an Abandoned store right across the street from me they rehearsed every day. I'll never forget.

Saw Felix perform at a local theater several years ago. Still had that soulful touch. Dino looks like a young Paul McCartney.

Greetings from NorCal. Being “ Gifted with age” as my former Irish priest father O’Reilly once said, I remember Ed Sullivan and this group. I like another group, Chicago, who used horns and perhaps their horn section did this as a side job. Yes their drummer Dino was very good as was the drummer Danny for Chicago. They both used the pencil grip on the sticks, now most drummers use the overhand grip if they even have live drummers because a lot of them use drum machines. I prefer live drummers and no auto tune on vocals, but I’m old school.
sorry.. no such drum grip terms as "pencil" or "overhand" grip - Proper stick grip techniques are "traditional" & "match" grips.
If you appreciate Chicago as I have please search LEONID AND FRIENDS they are featured on TH-cam and have an excellent Channel. They play Chicago better than Chicago. They are all Ukrainian and Russians.
I love Dino and the Rascals but Danny Seraphine was in a whole other class, if he played on nothing other than Beginnings, he'd still be world renowned!

Ladies and Gentlemen! Paul McCartney on drums! Ha! But seriously, Dino Danelli is a LOAD of fun to watch. And he, Like Keith Moon of The Who, knew he had a part to play as far as showmanship and DRIVING the band is concerned. A great band all the way around, IMHO.

Ed Sullivan preferred to have his acts perform live. A lot of times they'll have the vocals live performing to a backing track. One example was when Bee Gees did "Words" - Interestingly, Ed introduced the group but highlighted Barry for the vocals. Another was when Paul Revere and the Raiders did their only Ed appearance. They used backing tracks because they had just put in Freddy Weller at guitar that night (Paul was mad because Drake Levin was leaving the group and taking Fang and Smitty with him to form the group Brotherhood and barred him from performing.) The guy who was supposed to hit the switch on the backing track was late, making Ed mad because the group was delayed. Another time was when Lovin Spoonful sang "Do You Believe in Magic?" and I believe only John's vocal was live because they were doing special effects (Ed mentioned that the audience needed to watch the monitors to enjoy the performance)
Felix is such an handsome guy, who can also sing with the best of them.

there are two songs you need to look up. Good Lovin and another called Grovin these two songs were all over the radio. I have an 82 yr old brother and a 77 yr old sister that were big fans.
I'm in the same way... I had heard Groovin' but in the much later wonderful version of The Manhattan Transfer...
You should also listen to ‘People Got To Be Free’, which went to no. 1 in 1968.

Saw Felix & Gene w/the rest of their band in Jan. 2023 in Honolulu. Fantastic show. Wished it went on allll night. Felix has so much energy & his vocals were superb & soulful as ever.
