Absolutely goose bump inducing to hear this played properly for the first time since July 1985.It's the twelve string and bass that does it!! Just a shame the public wont get want they want with the co writer singing it!
What you have lost can never be found Words are just dust in deserts of sound Everything is lost and the truth is drowned Everything is lost in the giving ground
I simply find it very sad to read all these comments. Both Andrew and Wayne had their place in history - but it is just that - ancient history - some thirty odd years later we should celebrate what they 'were' - not what they 'are'. God bless them both and remember......some girls wander - by mistake
Anyone can play whatever music they want live, no need to acquire any rights as far as I know. In this case, those guys even wrote the music so there is not even a moral problem with that. This version is not bad actually... A great song it is indeed.
There is no debate to have! The original version of the Sisters is obviously the only one that is worth it. On the other hand, between this version and what Andrew is currently producing on stage, there is also no debate. The Sisters are dead and Andrew kills them a bit more with each of his pitiful performances on stage. Thanks to Wayne for keeping the faith.
..........agree 1000 percent, if that's even mathematically possible..........I have been a Sisters follower since they were only a minor footnote, and honestly, I discarded them because the vast majority of their stuff was complete crap..........then BANG, Flood land, Vision Thing, etc..........somehow they found killer hooks, which matched perfectly to Andrew's voice (which definitely needs the perfect song), then, a nose dive...........live concerts are hopeless, poorly mixed, with all reason for being long gone.........also, have always felt that Sisters, particularly Andrew, had very bad pitch problems with about all of their songs..........slow Lucretia extended down, and you will be blown away..........same with Marian...............
Well said my friend. At this stage of the Sisters' live show, I have no doubt that Eldrtich wants to bury once a for all what greatness the sisters once had. That or he is a professional Cheat artist who takes pleasure in robbing people of their money when they pay to see that calamity called Meth experience! Oh well... The Sisters and all their greatness still live in our memories and records.
Yep, they're still exceptionally good live, and well followed, despite the bad sound on this video. So good, that after attending this gig (and others in the UK), I decided to spend my cash and holidays following them around Europe in November of the same year. Not many bands warrant that. No regrets and I can't wait to see 'em again, money and time well spent.
This isn't a "cover" - Wayne Hussey is credited along Andrew Eldritch on the original album. I guess he wrote the music and received the rights to lyrics after his "divorce" with The Sisters of Mercy. BTW original music for Marian was the one later used for Black Planet.
As always everything is a matter of taste; in my eyes just a different and not bad interpretation. And since Wayne is co-author of the song, it fits for me even more. But I like his non-live piano version even better and yes, that ( in my eyes ) can easily compete with Eldritch: th-cam.com/video/HSwIMEAiiFE/w-d-xo.html
I actually really like this version, but then I like both Evie and Wayne's voices. I also like The Sisters version too. To me, both sets of vocals add something to the track that the others don't. And I'm not even sitting on the fence or playing Devil's advocate because I like both The Mission and The Sisters Of Mercy, just like I like Duran Duran and Cinderella. I think what I'm trying to say is that everyone has their own opinion. There's no point in calling someone else a dick-head or bell end because they don't agree with someone else's opinion - it's part of what makes us human, our differences and yes, our similarities. Some people might agree with my view, some might not, but it's all a part of what makes us who we are and what we are. Folk'll have to just agree to disagree. :)
Congratulations, that's the most sensible statement possibly anyone's made on the subject :) Personally, I don't care if Taylor Swift nails it, so long as it sounds good, that's fine by me.
@@2112jonr Wayne had the whole track on tape without vocals and it was the only song Andrew was able to put down a lyric for in a single day, despite his original comment when he first heard it of "don't like this it sounds like Siouxsie and the Banshees". The vocal is such a tiny part of this track that it's essentially a Hussey solo composition. It would sound great as an instrumental.
you hit the nail here Johnny. ...I can handle the bass and lead guitar quite well, i can even live with the vocals fine, but the drums are an absolute joke...
Yep. Hussey wrote the music, Eldritch the vocals. Seems very fair that both can perform it. Though the chip on their shoulder brigade don't seem to get this.
Nah, he still dishes out red wine, regularly :-) That particular night in Sheffield was stormingly hot outside the venue, inside it was like a bloody sauna, even in shorts and t-shirt. Even after the gig I walked around the city for an hour to cool off. The vino returned later in the year :)
Saw them in, I believe in 1988 and a girl in the audience received the bottle from Wayne, but when leaving the venue she was right in front of me walking down the street and she dropped the bottle. Why I didn't pick up a piece I'll never know.
@@luxvox9239 I saw them 3 times in mid eighties, one gig, he gave his blue nun to a girl to my left, his fag to a guy in front of me, He handed me a red rose but by the time I'd dragged it through all those grabbing hands, all I had left was a stalk. Still have it today though, and to me, it is priceless !!
Evi Vine. She supported The Mish through their 30th anniversary tour, though she didn't do vocals all some tracks, like this one. I was skeptical at first, but actually enjoyed her singing when I saw them live. Her own band's web site is here: evivine.com , worth checking out.

Thank you for sharing this. I have always wanted to hear Wayne sing Marian. What a treat!
Being that these are original members of Sisters of Mercy that originally recorded this actual song I don't see a problem!
Agreed. Two thirds to be precise. What's left of the SoM is only one third, and his voice is sadly shot to hell.
@@2112jonr 2/3 of SOM at the end. Gary Marx was there for a long time and there was Ben Gunn too 👍
Very true. That being said, I still prefer the Eldrich/DrAvalanche version 😉
Wayne wrote the song anyway
Som version far better, eldritch voice deeper works better, no need to do this ,they're bigger than this
Wayne Hussey wrote this song while still in the Sisters, so he has every right to sing it. And Evi Vine's voice is divine!

A decent version but I can't help wanting to hear Andrew Eldrich's deep, deep vocals
