Kyoto animation is one of those studios who try to pay their animators a good wage and train their juniors for success. On the day of the attack a worker posted a picture of cherry tomatoes they're growing by the window. It's really so heart breaking. They were so young and just want to draw and tell stories.
@@kushy- I haven't much info about the plagiarism issue but the video explained a bit of it and the studio said the accusations are false since the scene that allegedly plagiarized was a generic scene. If you have more info then I hope it can throw more shade to kyoani to justify your terrible comment. Edit: As I've read through comments someone just pointed out that Tsurune the said project that contained Shinji's alleged work was published 2016, a year before he submitted his work. So your comment is just terrible to justify deaths of 36 people. If you have problems reach out to someone please.
I don't know if someone mentioned this but I like the fact the president decided to turn the building site into a memorial park rather than try to scrape by and reopen it as soon as possible.
Why not a memorial? If he chooses to make it in memory of those who died. It seems harsh for them to reopen right on the same spot. It's probably better they move now since being in the same place where there was an explosion would cost stress
This reminds me hugely of the insane American animation stalker Truebones "Joe McPeek" who hasn't killed anyone yet but can be found making death threats and getting into verbal arguments with Epic Games Lawyers and many others delusionally claiming he owns their content. There are a lot of isolate disturbed people out there.
It was said in the video that the president of Kyoto Animation had said he'd like to do that but the decision hasn't been made. I like the idea too so I hope he chooses to do so.
A single door was the difference between 19 people living or dying. Remember ladies and gentleman, if you work in a building with fire escapes, insure that they actually work.
Remember being taught this by a search and rescue guy/firefighter. Remember the exits near where you will be in the building (even windows, they can save your life). Have an escape plan. Know how to get to said exit. Always ensure the exits work, and aren't blocked by anything. Also practice how to open the door, even though that sounds stupid, your brain doesn't function well under stress and you might just fumble the door handle to your demise. This is why most emergency exits use crash bars.
@@candle_eatist Furthermore, make sure there are two sets of doors between the exit and the building, so the exits don't end up functioning like an air funnel for a raging fire. The main reason you don't open windows and doors during a fire, is because the fire will instantaneously become highly explosive, due to the vast amounts of oxygen suddenly available. Expand the emergency exits and make sure they work, yes. But do also make sure that they indeed are emergency exits and not flamethrower funnels
While visiting Japan back in 2015 I stopped by the Kyoto Animation Studio 1 building just to have a look and take some pictures as a fan of their work. To my surprise one of the workers came out to greet me and told me how happy she was to see a foreign fan come by. I thanked her and she showed me the way to their gift shop up the street from the main building that sells merch from some of their anime’s . I really hope and pray she was one of the survivors, or perhaps didn’t work there anymore by the time of this horrific attack. It really scares me to think about…

@@Swimfan72 i still play occasionally but for some reason there are no decent clubs or communities in the asian so im mainly just studying. Hows life man?
@Michael O Callaghan Yep. The Violet Evergarden series (which is on Netflix) has received two movies. One of them is a side story (that movie was finished literally a day before the arson), and the second one is a sequel. I definitely recommend watching Violet Evergarden, if you don't mind shedding some tears, though do bear in mind that the second movie has not been released online yet (Japanese Blu-ray comes out in August). Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid's 2nd season is the other post-arson series coming out soon (July 2021). Nice little slice-of-life comedy. Unfortunately, its director Yasuhiro Takemoto passed away from the arson attack, so a different director is taking over this season (Takemoto is still credited as one of the directors). A lot of other projects like the Tsurune and Free! movies are in the works right now.
I think that in the end they did not accept the money they were given to rebuild the studio and they divided it in two, one to use it to create a monument to the victims, and the other half to give it to the families of the victims.
@@danielaperezacosta1940 That solidifies it right there. Some humans can be pure evil but then there are some who are selfless, even in their darkest hour.
It's been two years, mate. Today Japanese news told us the story of the father of one of the victims. He lost his son that day. He makes origami cranes every day, thinking about his son. He said like "I want to go back to before the July 18th two years ago if I could." The news also told us that it's unknown when the trial starts since the criminal is still in a bad health condition from the burn. I hope the trial starts soon, and the criminal to be punished thoroughly as soon as possible for the victims and their families.
Japan has a death penalty, and it'd be highly surprising if the perpetrator didn't get one for such a crime. Their way of doing it is pretty grim too: they don't tell you when your time is up. You may wait for days or you may wait for years for the penalty. It's pretty scary stuff, but I don't feel pity for people who are confidently 100% guilty of a serious crime like this guy - but if there's even slight doubt surrounding whether the person actually did the crime, I'm against giving them a death penalty then.
Not wanting to sound merciless and crass, but I do hope this low life enjoys every minute of the excruciating pain he has to endure for his daily exfoliation treatment and that the nurses have misplaced all the sedatives………and that they take their time
@Levi Ackerman they mean that the 19 ppl going up to the roof to avoid the fires, could’ve survived if the door worked. The other 25 were in different floors and no where near the door.
@@BrotherBoresIsBest They definitely make some the best in the industry, my favorite movie "A Silent Voice" was made by them in fact, and they have some other great ones that are either emotional like "Violet Evergarden" or just cute and chill like "K-On!". Forgive me for giving a morbid comment, but your comment alone could be a good source material for plot-making in anime and improvise the story to make it even better

When we finally learn what the scene was (buying meat at a super market), I couldn't believe it. I thought it was a full length episode worth of plagiarized material, not some mundane scene that anyone with a pen could come up with and write. Christ, how does anyone justify this in their own head?
I'd hate for this to happen to any company's employees, but I'm extra sad that this shithead attacked a company that treats its employees better than most. It is a generic scene where someone buy discounted meat ,a convenience store scene will eventually appear in most slice of life anime ,i dont know how some people think that is plagiarism
For anyone wondering, I heard the anime in question was Tsurune. It’s a decent slice of life about a team of high school archers. The scene was one where two characters who don’t get along, discuss buying meat for a team bbq. They agree on the best cut of meat for the price and find some on sale, which is fine because they were going to cook it that day. That scene is where the two characters really start to understand each other and it’s a good scene, even if it’s pretty generic. It’s a great show about getting over loss and how it can affect people in the strangest ways. I enjoyed it, like I generally enjoy anything that comes out of Kyoani studios.
@janda5816 - They have more buildings, and as the video said, most of the survivors chose to continue to work there. They have since come out with the second season of Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid. It still credited Yasuhiro Takemoto as director, even though he was one of those killed.
I was visiting Japan for the first time when this happened, literally everyone was heartbroken and confused as to why something this horrifying would happened. I'm just happy to see KyoAni pick back up and strive to make art once again.
i was in kyoto about a month or so after it happened. i remember being on the nara line, and just happening to look out of the window at the right time. there, i saw the burnt-out shell of studio 1.... absolutely horrifying.
The saddest part was that they did not use any of Shinji's art, therefore owed him nothing. I think he owes his life for what he did to all those people needlessly. Just selfish and evil, in my opinion.

I was just going to post this. The guy gave up when his dad committed suicide. I'm not familiar with laws there, if they had the option to send him to inpatient mental health &/or behavioral health. They should've taken him seriously... I'm not excusing what he did, just that it could have possibly been prevented if they had listened to those words.
He killed a lot of good animators that were in the building, also the character designer and key animator for the show Free! which is a fuckin tragedy.
It’s crazy I haven’t heard about this, I love free!’s art style so much, I used to study/reference it a fuck ton when I first started taking my art more seriously. That’s incredibly tragic.
The saddest thing is that for whatever reason the building had no sprinklers because they weren't required for whatever reason. The blocked fire door made the situation even worse, but had there been sprinklers it's likely everyone would have survived.
It was an old building from days where it wasn't required if I remember right about this incident. And to install some, they'd have to renovate the entire building.
Floors 1&2 were engulfed in 20 seconds, and the 3rd within 90 seconds later. Animation studios still use paper and the staircase acted as a chimney making a what amounted to a fire tornado. Horrific. Many buildings in Japan are not built to last more than 20 years because of earthquakes and lack systems and materials that make the buildings cost more than their predicted usefulness. Since Fukushima and the tsunami there has been a call to revise this practice, but has had little traction. Sometimes there is no way to protect life from the evil that is done. 😥
wait it had no sprinklers? then that makes sense why it seemed so bad and uncontrollable for such a huge building even tho the explosion was at the bottom floor. I cant think of any commercial building not having a sprinkler system here in the US.
It's not whatever reason, that's just how Japan works. I lived there for years and never had sprinklers in any of my buildings. They also use highly flammable materials for the walls.
I've been to Kyoto on holidays literally 1 day before this attack. I remember that a big national holiday took place, featuring huge street parade. Pretty sad to have heard about such a contrasting event 24h later.
And he had nothing to lose. People don't realize if a human has no property or people in this world then he has no skin in the game called society. Meaning he has free reign to tell society to fuck off.
it would have just made it burn even more. It was already a funnel if they opened the door it likely would have created a roaring inferno as the oxygen flow fueled the fire from every broken window (the new open door on the roof would create a huge draft due to the heat) It's lucky they didn't open it. Although still horrible and absolutely sad.
jumping from 3rd floor window would also saved most of the lives also. broken bones is better than death. also maximum heigth when correctly landing is around 6 meters without any injuries.

@@PettyMurphyTV it's good that they deemed him mentally well. If they hadn't he would've gotten away with it, Japan's judicial system is kinda shit tbh
I know nothing of Japan's judicial system, other than I've heard it's really strict but that's pretty vague. But just making a more generalized comment here, because here in the US, people often comment and express the sentiment "Good, he didn't get away with the insanity defense. He'll face face the punishment he deserves" but the kind of mental health "rehabilitation" facilities they put those people into, are at LEAST as bad as prison, in my opinion and a LOT of others. You're going to be drugged up on so many different medications like a guinea pig until they find the "right" combination that makes you as docile as possible and arguably the least human. And speaking from experience as someone who's been put on a lot of those types of medications, I can firmly debunk the common misconception people seem to think "Oh, he'll just be drugged out of his mind. He won't even know where he is. So much for justice" or w/e, it's not like they're fucking fun/recreational drugs. At worst, it can INDUCE psychosis and leave you with such severe insomnia for weeks on end and not even be able to function like a normal human being. Again, I know I'm speaking solely from a US point of view. I have no idea what Japan's mental health facilities are like etc. Just wanted to spread the general knowledge of, in other cases/offenses that DO take place in the US, being deemed mentally incompetent or unfit for trial etc is anything but getting off easy.
The death of someone never hits you until you finally realize they're gone and won't come back. Took me years to realize my great grandma won't come back and now I regret everything. It took me a year to realise these people won't come back. Took me too long.
In terms of the elderly, I miss them far less because they lived a long life. Far beyond the national average in most cases. I'm so angered that that door to the roof was shut. I have been to many companies that keep roofs, disability, and fire escape locked for "security reasons" or permanent on "temporary closed" these tend to be for cost-cutting 1 less place to clean, 1 less place to maintain. Whilst being able to technically say they are up to the fire and disability code on their corporate website. Thing is with stories that have an anchor in reality it is very possible that experience you are bringing into the formation of it isn't necessarily as unique as you think it is making it seem like something is 'stolen' when instead it was just shared experience. A good narrative finds where to use those common moments to engage the audience and make them relate to the character's experience. I went and watched the scene he claims, it's dialogue could've been any two people picking out food in a grocery store it's not a witty or punchy sort of scene or terribly detailed. Kyoto made "A Silent Voice"? That movie is so fucking good. It touches on what's most wrong with our society and how we don't really see "self ending" as something so serious and how constant years of bullying can lead to it, and how people with disabilities such as *being deaf and needing extremely expensive hearing aids* aren't respected as much as they should be for living their life as they do. It's such a good movie.
Not to mention, it shows how even the cruelest of bullies aren’t always bad to the core, and can be capable of change. Not Aoba, though. No redemption for him.
As a long time anime fan, I'll never forget the dread I felt on that day. Coming online in the morning and seeing the twitter trends: "KyoAni, KyotoAnimation, RIP, fire". And then spending the entire day refreshing the timeline in hope for good news, for confirmation of safety of staff members known to have been in the building. And instead the number of confirmed victims just kept rising by the hour. The world lost a lot of talented artists that day. The entire reason why he was able to get in was that there was an appointment for an interview shortly after. The reporters were set to arrive in the next hour or so, so the front door was unlocked to allow them into the lobby. They felt completely safe to do this. Also, there's a typo. The series that was his alleged motive is called Tsurune, based on a novel that was published in 2016. And I would have loved if you had also said something from the angle of how disrespectful news outlets were in the following days. Police asked the media several times to *not* publish the names of the deceased until their families had consented to the police officially releasing that information. They were also asked to not publish the name of the culprit so he doesn't get any type of fame for it. But they didn't care about that, they just wanted to get as many clicks as possible from grieving fans. Some broke into the culprit's appartment, others stalked families of victims until they managed to coerce them into giving interviews. It was a mess.
I know that exact feeling, when my brother was murdered, we had to fight off reporters with a stick... As we were instructed to do by the police, as it wasn't entirely solved yet... But they kept hounding us.

@@c4ntt4k3 You didn't get the joke. It started with Japan producing anime, it became massively popular with a small minority who began to neglect other parts of their lives. Some of them began to act Japanese while being generally poorly dressed since they don't go outside much. So there became a look that was associated with these people when spotted outdoors. Over time, Japan has adopted several American clothing styles, and it is becoming more and more normal for Japanese people to dress American. The Japanese man who started the fire was poorly dressed in casual clothing which only a decade ago would only have been common in America. He looked like a weeb.

A Silent Voice helped me through a suicidal period so much. I adored their work. I honestly feel I wouldn't be here today had I not come across that movie. The day of the attack, I was in tears over how someone could do this to such an incredible place. An absolutely horrifying act.
It was really devastating for me, even until now. I cried at the train upon reading the ages of the victims and found a new animator at the age of 20, my age back then. It was too much to handle and process it back then. I read stories about some of the victims jumped and broke their legs just to escape the fire... Some even tried to save the others but they failed to do so... Just heartbreaking and disturbing... Thank you for bringing this case up..
I feel like Shitji is immature. His life was horrible and he needed someone to blame that isn’t himself, when he saw that generic scene. He immediately thought it was his work?? That shows he was immature and used that excuse to burn the building. Blaming on the company of why his life went wrong.
@Cody Ingram I mean mature people realize situations that they’ve created themselves. A mature person wouldve recognized their declining mental health and admitted that they need help. Instead of trying to improve himself, Shitji determined the most appropriate course of action would be to make others suffer just because he was unhappy with his own life. Immature people do things without thinking about consequences, or what their actions REALLY represent. So yes, definitely poor mental health but he was immature.
@@KingSlimeProductions yeah no... schizophrenics for example a lot of the time don’t know they’re sick, does that mean they’re immature? Of course not, a lot of mental health issues cause a person to have no self awareness.
@@yeahnahyeah3883 is the schizophrenic person murdering people? I think that's the key point to take away here. You can have mental health issues, but to willingly, consciously, plan and implement the harm to other people is where we need to draw the line between a person suffering from mental illness needing help or being removed from society. No matter the issue, it takes clarity and forethought to plan and execute an attack like this
@@yeahnahyeah3883 Well schizophrenics aren't exactly known for being in control of their own actions. This guy clearly KNEW what he was doing. Regardless of his mental health, the interviews all show that he is aware and consciously made these decisions. He knew what he was doing, and he realized his actions would cause harm. I'm unsure if he fully thought out what his actions would entail, or if he just didn't care. This man was isolated with his own thoughts, and his lack of maturity is what prevented him from realizing that 1) he was being a dumbass 2) he could've easily remedied his situation if he used his fucking brain and got some help. So yes, I would say this incident is due in part to both a lack of maturity and poor mental health, however if even one of these issues had been remedied then he likely wouldn't have committed any crimes. It's easy to say what could've been done in hindsight but I think the best thing we can do now is use this guy as an example for how isolation can be devastating,.

pretty sure that fire absolutely destroyed the structural integrity of it so it had to be demolished anyways.
A single door was the difference between 19 people living or dying. Remember ladies and gentleman, if you work in a building with fire escapes, insure that they actually work.
That’s why fire drill 2x a year should be mandatory like in our country
Remember being taught this by a search and rescue guy/firefighter. Remember the exits near where you will be in the building (even windows, they can save your life). Have an escape plan. Know how to get to said exit. Always ensure the exits work, and aren't blocked by anything. Also practice how to open the door, even though that sounds stupid, your brain doesn't function well under stress and you might just fumble the door handle to your demise. This is why most emergency exits use crash bars.
@@candle_eatist good tips1👍
This is also why push open from inside became a big deal. And even those don’t always work during a panic suprisingly

Shoulda, woulda, coulda.

Why would it be funny?
"The child who is not embraced by the village will burn it down to feel its warmth."
Children desperately need connection, love, and community. If these needs aren’t met, they’ll cry out for help and even resort to destructive behavior.
A child lost and abandoned by their community will destroy it in order to get the attention and connection they need. And before you say " he's not a child", he might as well be, mentally. Age is not an accurate indication of one's mental maturity.
In essence, monsters are created by imperfections of society, ultimately. Sad, but common enough.

Likely, the story your mother-in-law thought reader's digest stole from her being a reader's digest story was rooted in a combination of pseudo-christian morals/ vague spirtualism surrounding a daily or common event- Hearing a heavenly messenger while cooking supper to realize maybe divorce is not the answer. I remember waiting for a new Fire Force episode to come out when I learned about this, I thought it was very appropriate for them not to publish an episode that week. It shows how much compassion Japan has for their own
Kyoto made "A Silent Voice"? That movie is so fucking good. It touches on what's most wrong with our society and how we don't really see "self ending" as something so serious and how constant years of bullying can lead to it, and how people with disabilities such as *being deaf and needing extremely expensive hearing aids* aren't respected as much as they should be for living their life as they do. It's such a good movie.
Not to mention, it shows how even the cruelest of bullies aren’t always bad to the core, and can be capable of change. Not Aoba, though. No redemption for him.
They also made Clannad!
If you love the movie then you should read the manga. It goes even more in depth of the characters
Its manga adaptation though, and the manga is more complex than anime. Still, pretty good job for kyoani though
Violet Evergarde too
As a long time anime fan, I'll never forget the dread I felt on that day. Coming online in the morning and seeing the twitter trends:
"KyoAni, KyotoAnimation, RIP, fire".
The way that media treats families is so gross. thanks for adding more information for us who hadn't heard of it!
I know that exact feeling, when my brother was murdered, we had to fight off reporters with a stick... As we were instructed to do by the police, as it wasn't entirely solved yet... But they kept hounding us.
I never been a fan of KyoAni.. They anima's just aren't for me. BUT I knew of the company and as a general Anime fan I was shocked and horrified when I heard about it. And I rushed over to the Gofundme as soon as I heard about it and threw it what I could. Even as tragic as it was it was also heart warming to see how much people donated both on the offical site and through the gofundme.
I don't think such details are easy to find, and it says more about the media than the crime.

No matter the issue, it takes clarity and forethought to plan and execute an attack like this
@Jo don't try to troll here
@@yeahnahyeah3883 Well schizophrenics aren't exactly known for being in control of their own actions.
