    It is possible Ashley was delayed in toilet training because of how distressed she was - either due to the lack of stability in caregivers / home environments, or because of her parents' abuse. It is very common for children to regress with life skills when they are going through something traumatic.

      Also, the grandma may have been potty training Ashley in the Chinese way (elimination method) where small children don't wear nappies (I used to live there and babies wear special pants with an opening for peeing / pooping) and instead respond to external and internal cues that they need the toilet.
      If done right, it is a tried-and-true approach to potty training that actually takes less time than the Western way. It also teaches babies to be in tune with their bodies (which is something we could probably be doing better in the West.)
      Of course, if you are busy running a restaurant, it's probably more difficult to spend time with your baby teaching them, or to be on hand to attend to their needs if they have to go. Plus, transitioning from the elimination method to nappies would be very confusing for a little one.

    • @shimauta1941
      @shimauta1941 ปีที่แล้ว +71

      This isn't meant to be some kind of excuse, but burning it, burying it, throwing it in the ocean are three very well known ways that various cultures handle the corpses of their deceased. These people are Chinese and fall well under the umbrella of cultures who would handle the deceased that way. It's also worth mentioning that a lot of cultures worry about what could happen to the soul of a person if they're not seen off into the next world correctly.
      The extremely detached demeanor of both of the parents in this case is also pretty par for the course with Asian adults even in regards to their own family members. Even more so when it comes to family members considered to be causing problems to the overall functionality of the family. Not unlike how a lot of families in the US, UK, and Canada treat "problematic relatives" like unwanted outsiders who refuse to take the hint and stop coming around.
      I'm also of the opinion that the father was plenty emotional during his interrogation. Everything out of his mouth is delivered with clear and evident nervousness. He knows the actions of him and his wife look absolutely terrible and that they're being judged and he naturally wants to defend himself, but he doesn't know how and knows there aren't enough words in existence to express himself with that would make them seem not guilty.
      He also clearly isn't adverse to acknowledging that yes, a crime had been committed. However his explanation of how things happened (and he repeats himself quite often) also aim to clarify that no, the death was not a result of malicious intent. A frustrated, overworked, and decidedly burned out mother simply got so angry that she snapped. Something that (even if many people pretend otherwise) can happen to anyone in any situation.

If you have a child and then realise later on that you aren't ready to be a parent, surrender that child into the care of an adoptive guardian - I know that's a difficult thing to come to terms with but it's better for that kid to be in a safe and stable environment than a neglectful or abusive one. Many 'traditional' cultures see the birth of a daughter as a burden. There is a serious 'shortage' of women in China due to this cultural belief. In China, grown men cannot find wives at the moment because sons are seen as ideal whilst girls are 'disposable'. The same is true in many parts of South Asia. China's decades of "one child policy' helped contribute to thousands of live births of girls who later go 'missing'. There are, literally, millions of 'missing' girls in parts of Asia, the Middle East and Africa (90 to 100 million). Society cannot function without women and, tragically, it is taking decades to re-educate many cultures on the real value of a daughter. This is not an excuse for these terrible parents but rather a contributing factor. They didn't care for their daughter because the society in which they were raised did not care for daughters. As a life-long feminist; this breaks my heart!
      EDIT: spelling.

It turns out when you never teach a child something they don't come pre-installed with everything you want them to do. Also the trauma of living in an abusive home just means I learn even slower then everyone else. Also it turns out everyone wasn't mad at me, just mad at each other and taking it out on me. Her feelings towards her daughter are not unheard of. My maternal grandmother left my mom on a park bench, in her car seat for 12 or so hours in the cold, and refused to tell anyone except her imposing father where she was. When her mother (my great-grandmother) asked, she just sat there in silence. Once her father, (my great-grandfather) found her, they raised my mother until she was 14, while my grandmother went on to have 6 more kids and for the most part, was a good mother. Any violence against a kid should be automatic life in prison.

      My own mother was always a very calm logical person. She also taught us how to not panic and respond calmly and logically. Especially when it comes to medical stuff and emergencies and explaining the situation.

Mom's body language and her repeatedly saying " I killed her" in what seems like a proud tone of voice makes me think she did intend to kill her child. The husband said he knew this would happen. The fact that the father said that they wanted to send Ashley away before exactly this happened just shows how bad the abuse of her was before her death. They could've done so much to avoid this situation but they just let it get worse and worse due to the utter lack of care for Ashley. I feel so bad for her as she did nothing wrong to deserve such horrific parents. It might not have been planned murder but they both seemed to be aware of the possibility of Ashley's mother killing her sooner or later, and that is just as bad as if they had planned her murder.

      While it’s obvious they abused her, it’s actually culturally very normal in China to allow young children to poop and pee in public. They make a type of pants for them to wear that opens up underneath when they squat in a corner. So her being in China most of her life it makes sense she wouldn’t be potty trained. They have to send out alerts to Chinese citizens who may travel outside the country to warn them that’s it’s inappropriate to defecate in public, and have a banned travelers list for ppl who do something that brings a lot of shame to the government. When Ming Ming gets deported eventually, it’s likely she’ll be made to ‘disappear’.

    • @ClassicRiki
      @ClassicRiki ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It became premeditated murder when they decided not to call the emergency services to render life saving care. It can take only one second to constitute premeditation under federal law. Initially it would have been some degree of manslaughter but when they (as they admitted so coldly) realised she was in a serious condition they chose between immediately asking for help in attempting to save her life or to let her die, simply to avoid any consequences. I can’t believe they didn’t push for 1st degree homicide on this one, perhaps plea down to 2nd degree. I hope they both get ended before they leave prison.
