@@LordBelakor Something about beliefs, will or maybe even confidence brought have at times in history made some to appear bullet proof or arrow proof. Could be a god or a glitch in the matrix them believing with such will that it makes them sorta bullet proof.
That moment when you realize Doss was such a fucking badass, the director had to cut things out to make it seem more believable… Truly one of the greatest men who has ever lived
It's beyond inspiring. To be that brave, yet like an immovable object in your stance on being peaceful is something everyone should strive for. Truly a pure a noble man
Should be noted that by this time, from what I read, he wasn't seen as a coward.
They took away scenes because it made him unbelievable to them, but they also added more hate, as it made for better movie.
The prayer before battle scene. That was planned and everyone knew of it, even those on the ships.
This also isn't the first movie to hold back from some real life awesomeness as it seems to awesome to be real to people

@@reactionare Oh yeah. Things like that. Turns out people in real life can do some amazing things that when put to film people just go "Pffft yeah right, impossible"
Desmond was a relatively small man and he carried or dragged 75-100+ men one after the other, most of them wearing several pounds of kit which could snag on any of the battlefield obstructions. He was exhausted, malnourished and had his own wounds and had to be wary of Japanese patrols.
What he achieved is probably the among the most incredible feats of strength and endurance in history.

Dude if he was carrying a 75 pound man he was carrying children you mean 150 or 200 + man average weight of an anglo Saxon soldier of the time was 200 pounds at 6 feet tall

I LOVE at 0:59 the soldier says “i don’t know!” Because after being able to see again, he’s now doubting all of his injuries. The hope Desmond gave him was the strongest thing.

There was an interview done with the real soldier that he was based on (the one who had blood in his eyes) and he said something along the lines of “when Desmond wiped away the blood it was like seeing a sunrise for the first time”.

Andrew Garfield should have gotten all the awards for this. He was amazing as Doss.
Sadly, Cpl Doss didn't live to see the movie. I think it would have been amazing to let him know we haven't forgotten him, even after all this time.
Andrew has been snubbed from an Oscar twice now and it gets me so mad lol He should've won for Tick Tick Boom too!

The real story is far more incredible. Doss was severely malnourished from his diet. His faith prevented him from eating most of his rations. By the time this event occurred, Doss was withered and tired. He then went on to not only save many as portrayed, but the scene of the grenade is even more intense. Doss rolled off the gurney to allow a more wounded soldier to take his place while he continued to perform medical aid with severe lacerations, internal organ damage, and multiple bone fractures.
The man was unstoppable, unbreakable, and fearless...
He'd be the strongest Green Lantern with that level of willpower. A God fueled Green Lantern.
While I do commend his bravery, weakening yourself through malnourishment before going into battle is pretty irresponsible and stupid.

Faith needs to be grounded in reality, morality and tradition, in equal parts, and while I find it quite dumb to not eat meat for religious reasons by itself already, I think that deliberately weakening yourself, thus risking your life as well your capability to do your sacred duty of protecting your country and comerades, is sacrilegious. How does a christian of all people even get the idea that one should be vegatarian for religious reasons? Reprehensibly stupid, heretical even.
@@y.r._ It's Seventh Day Adventists. That church latched on to one verse saying God gave humans plants for food, and somehow came to the conclusion the verse was saying not to eat meat. You're right, the no meat thing doesn't make a lot of sense.

@@yoshidinono8095I don't fault the average 20 something year old japanese soldier for fighting and trying to save his buddies and lifting up prayers to whatever gods he's calling upon. Not in the strict sense of dismissal, because there is heroic element present. I just don't believe his gods hear him and that the ultimate cause of the japanese military was unjust. I believe Jesus Christ does hear those that call upon Him for strength.
This isn't malice or arrogance, but an assurance, humanly speaking, on a comparable level as any Muslim, Jew, Hindu, Buddhist, or any other religion that believes itself to know the truth.

Desmond Doss was a strict vegetarian, at the time most rations were heavily filled with meat based food, so he did all of this with limited nutritional choices… BTW… Survivor accounts make the actual number of lives saved, closer to 125…
Yeah apparently 70 odd was the mid way point between Doss humble 50 odd and the men's over a hundred.
The 70 odd was just from the first two days… Until he was taken out by a Grenade, on the third day, he was still lowering men down the escarpment…

Doss was never a coward. He just hadn't been the "normal" accepted idea of bravery in the Army, until then. But he had been brave all along.

Mr. Doss had proven himself many times before this battle on Okinawa. This was the third or fourth campaign he and his unit were involved in. By the time this happened Doss had been awarded two Bronze Stars and at least two Purple Hearts. I know it was just for the movie but identifying him as coward this late in his service, after all the brave things he had already done, bothered me. If they showed every brave act that Doss had done during his service up to this point, this movie would be over four hours long.
@@mase7557 and also seen as unbelievable. Even the final stretcher scene he offered it to someone else and intervened in someone else's treatment to help them..they guy was a boss.
That smile the boy gives when he realizes he can finally see gets me every time. It literally glows in the dark and lights up just as much as he does. That big ole white smile in the pitch.

Imagine being so badass the movies had to leave much of your feats out of your biographical movie, that still ends up bringing people to tears and is critically acclaimed.
Yeah, Iwo Jima, and Guam were completely left out. His story is truly incredible
That fact that he went into combat to save lives rather than take them speaks volumes to the level of bravery he had, most of the reason for that is that the japanese rarely took prisoners and if they did, the prisoners didnt live too long.
Yes, they were ruthless and enjoyed torturing captured soldiers. You should read the account of President Bush and what happened to the men from his plane that were caught. People have forgot how the Japanese were back then.
Makes me wish there was an equivalent of Desmond Doss in the IJA (pacifist at least) but they'd imprisoned, humiliated and branded traitors by the officer corps...
well i guess that's why Japan was so brutal anyway, sympathy and humanity was punished if it didn't go along with an officer's orders

@@cloroxbleach9222 My aunt is from Japan and lived during WW2 where her father was a officer in the Japanese army. She said that her father beside his family's Samurai Sword always carried a small dagger with him to take his life so that he would never bring dishonor to his family by being captured. My Aunt came from a Samurai family that prided them selves on staying true to what they believed. To surrender to the enemy was one of the greatest dishonors the Japanese could do them and their families as they were taught to die with honor. Dying in battle was great honor for the Japanese Hence why a good chunk of Japanese POWs never returned to Japan as if they did then they would either be killed or shunned or who knows what else
My aunt's father was not someone that hated Americans at all (he let his only daughter marry an American solider after chasing him around the town with his family's samurai sword how he was able to keep that after the war i have no idea) but he was just doing his duty to protect his family and country as you have to remember that not everyone one that fought for Germany and Japan believed in war. And a good chuck of soldiers in both Germany and JApan were forced to fight or their families would be killed.
I should point out also that while Japan was at War with USA and somewhat what allied with Nazi Germany they didn't believe in Hitler Killing all the Jewish people. in fact Japan worked on getting a Large amount of Jewish people out of Europe to Japan where they were treated with respect and taken care of with a good chunk staying in Japan and their grandchildren and so force still living there to this day. So while Japan did have it's issues they did care about the innocents that were being hurt. YEs again i am aware what that Japanese military's did to the Chinese, Korean, And non Asian women that were unable to escape and taken to a certain type of camp.

I have watched these clips over and over, and it never fails to astonish me. What this man did was a miracle. He deserves to be remembered.
Trust me. He is.
He was never sent to a military tribunal but the battlefield scenes are very accurate as far as I know. It's hard to believe there are people out there capable of things like this, but they are.
They call Doss a “Coward”, but he did the most heroic thing that nobody else could. And he got the Medal of Honor.
Thankfully in reality he was respected even before being deployed.

It takes more courage to save a life than it does to take a life.

When he was nominated for the medal of honor, the commanders argued over how many men Doss had saved. His commander was certain it was well over 100, while Doss kept insisting it was lower, maybe half that if not less. Eventually, Doss and his Commanding officer reached an agreement, and 75 was put as the number of men he saved.
I think people don't really realize just how incredible this is. Doss was mildly malnourished and underweight. The effort to carry a full grown man is pretty intense, let alone doing it so many times, in such a relatively short time span. The amount of grit that man had is nothing short of astonishing.
He was never a coward. In fact, he was much braver than many of the others.
Maybe the bravest man ever to wear a uniform.
I don't think there's anything braver than standing by your conviction of being peaceful even under the threat of imprisonment, or staring down the barrel of an enemy soldiers gun. He would literally die before hurting another soul.
@@Kevin-mx1vi I think that's a fair assessment. He's also the purest form of a medic. Literally run behind enemy lines without a weapon to save his brothers(and I have no doubt he'd render aid on the "enemy").

The power of personal convictions in his faith gave him the strength to overcome his fear, his thirst, hunger, and injuries. “Just one more God.” Will always give me chills.
I'm absolutely unreligious, but I can always admire when someone's faith gives them the resolution to help people.

Besides the heroism of Doss, it blows my mind that they saw injured soldiers comming down the ropes, yet nobody asked why that was happenning.

In the movie, they did address it. 3:30 and at that time the soldiers there were busy taking the injured away immediately for treatment.

Saints are perfect. Inhuman. Doss was a hero. A living red blooded human being that saved the lives of countless men through his devotion and sheer will. Saints have it easy compared to Doss.
I don't think his NCO ever hated him. He just thought that a man who refused to carry a weapon during war time could be a benefit to the unit. He had to think of the rest of the platoon. He was wrong, obviously. But his concern was for the men and for Desmond as well. He thought he'd be in more danger not being able to use a weapon.

I love how he went from "Private Cornstalk" to "Doss" and finally "Desmond" at the end! Truly one of GOD's chosen! Absolutely love this movie!

In the documentary I want to say there were 6 Japanese soldiers lowered down. Yeah, none of them made it. Valuable intel lost 😔
HE shows what a true medic and great human being should be. He didn't care who you were and didn't care if you were trying to kill him hours before if you were hurt he would help you and save you. IT showed in the movie when he was in the tunnels of him finding a wounded Japanese solider that he treated. Can you say in front of God that you could save or try to save the very person that was trying to kill you like this wonderful man did.

Actually, by the battle of Okinawa, while serving with his platoon in 1944 in Guam and the Philippines, he had already been awarded two Bronze Star Medals with a "V" device, for exceptional valor in aiding wounded soldiers under fire. Taken from wikipedia.
The film toned down many things about Doss because the real event was so insane Mel Gibson thought the audience would think he was making shit up.
@Korawit Buttramee There was a similar story with a guy who lied about his age to get into the war in Europe. He was smaller than the others but ended up doing such insane shit on his own that when they made a movie about him some time after the war, he got them to dumb it down a bit to make it more believable.

@@racketyjack7621 It would yea. Particularly his MoH citation. In the movie it happens during the summer, on the back of a tank, and he's just fighting infantry in a field.
In real life it was on the back of a burning tank destroyer with no cover in the dead of winter, he had his legs shot from under him while directing artillery against German armor and infantry. Singlehandedly made a last stand and forced them to retreat, then refused to evac until his men had secured the town they were taking.
That wasn't the only thing they had to tone down, but all of it was by his request because he worried people wouldn't believe it and also felt like he would be overselling himself.
Bonus Fact: Audie Murphy suffered greatly from PTSD, but still portrayed himself in the film despite how much it bothered him. What a guy. Shame he died so young.
They left out one part where he was on a stretcher from severe injuries. He saw people were injured and rolled off the stretcher to help the injured. Man was badass.

You know you are legend when even the filming company has to erase details or some actual scenes to have more appealing and original movie

If this had not been documented history and you made a movie about it it would have flopped because it was so far-fetched nobody would have believed it. That's what makes true stories so amazing and the best movies.
Doss was a legend no one can compare no killls no holding weapons at all just pure faith and pure will power

Almost like disbelief, amazement, realization, pride, trust.....All the days and weeks of training and interaction with someone him and his superiors and subordinates all thought was inferior, stupid, naïve, and would never be a true soldier. Someone none of them thought they could trust or rely on, only for it all to vanish in a few seconds. All implicitly shown at 5:00 in Sgt. Howell's expression.

i do it mainly because i am really good at it for some reason, after I read the book about Mr. doss I enjoyed it even more.

I play this game called Happy Wars and it's complete utter chaos all the time. I like to play Cleric because then ican revive and heal and support my fellow gamers in battle. It's always funny seeing my teammate die 5 times cause I keep reviving him though

and he was a conscientious objector? I served in combat, but never in my long years have I ever seen a braver soul than this guy.
This made me think about how that captain must’ve felt in his barracks, led his men into a suicide hell fire, thinking he got the majority of them killed, walks into the medic tent and sees half of em there. Injured and bruised, yes, but ALIVE to go back home to their families. All because of “Doss the coward” showing how courageous he truly was for his brothers.
The only time in history Hollywood had to make the true story less extreme and amazing to make it believable
Not quite. They also had to downplay the story of Audie Murphy. He is the most decorated soldier in American history. He 0layed himself in the movie "To Hell and Back" and they did not cover all of his insanely heroic and badass actions because they knew it would be too unbelievable.

He was actually doing this in the middle of battle while under fire and providing blood to soldiers bleeding out. a act of which he had to expose himself to fire.

My dad met/knew Señor Desmond Doss. When he was growing up as a teen he worked with one of his nephew's, from his wife's side. He said that Desmond was one of the most sincere and nicest people that he had ever met and that he could see/feel a sort of radiance of light coming off of him that could only be described as something divine or spiritual. And that it was almost as if could see God's protection surrounding this man/hero from the dangers of this world. This man Desmond Doss was a one of a kind selfless hero. We need more people like this in the world. If we did then maybe things wouldn't be as shit as they have been for the past 6 or 7 decades. God bless y'all and have a Happy Sabbath, if you know what I mean. ツ

He was a conscientious objector and they called him a coward, but he proved to be the bravest man there was. A true hero.
A coward is someone who either rages at what they're afraid of, or hides from it. Courage is *_confronting_* it.

Remember, the Japanese still had soldiers patrolling this entire time, so in between the moments we see of him reaching, collecting, and lowering these soldiers he was doing twice as much crawling, sneaking, and hiding from active groups of imperial soldiers out to kill him.
I imagine many people did want to help him, but at the same time they’d know full well the only reason he was still alive at all was either sheer dumb luck or the personal intervention of an almighty God (take your pick honestly). Even if a full armed battalion tried going up they’d almost certainly do more harm than good just by drawing every imperial gun on the ridge to the one exit point.
@@TheDakkamanalso more men up top would be more noticable (and dangerous) than a single man crawling and sneaking around, if we take the statistical approach. They did the best they could, and covered the drop zone for the wounded, which saved Doss's life
@Eray ERGİ Exactly. If a single Japanese soldier got clever and followed a second trooper back to the ladder and lay in wait Doss wouldn't have stood a chance.
@Benjamin Floyd actually, one did. He testified later that he had 6 different opportunities to shoot Doss and each of the 6 times his weapon misfired/jammed. The only time it jammed was when he tried to shoot Doss. Research it. Until the day he died that Japanese Sniper thought Doss was a God or Angel.

People saying he's stupid for not eating some of his rations need to realize that he could've gotten sick from doing so. His body isn't used to eating meat. Also, he's still a hero even though he was malnourished. Most people wouldn't have been as brave enough to do what he did.
Doss proved that the hardest battles are the one without bloodshed
A man refusing to kill but rather save is no coward. I have more respect for a person who is willing to listen and ease a strangers troubles all night than a man who boasts about his time in war or killing someone.

Desmond Doss came to my church (Norco SDA Church) a long time ago and spoke. I bought one of his books and shook his hand. He autographed the book..I wish I had it still but I don't. He only wrote one book.
Doss was an Adventist and i respect him for being so courageous and true to his words as a believer that God is always with him

He didn’t pray for himself - he repeatedly prayed for the ability to save ‘just one more’, clearly expecting his blessings to end after each save.

The movie _is_ important, but a lot of what he did is not included in the movie. They cut it because they wanted it to be credible & if they included some of it, ... Well: _"nobody would believe it"_
For instance, he didn't kick the grenade; He stepped on it. When he was being carried off the Field, he was hit in the arm by sniper fire. He set the resulting _compound fracture_ with a rifle stock & crawled 300 yards to the Aid Station.
If you _really_ want to know about this guy, read the books.

By the time of Okinawa everyone in his unit knew him. His two prior combat experiences ( Guam and in the Philippines) had already earned him 2 bronze medals for valor.
Desmond Doss was a very great American. God bless him, his family and his legacy.

Not all of them pulled out. Some nut is up there dragging wounded from the top... People working continuously in war situation, tired, and making such a respectful remark with sarcasm. Everything about the scene touched me deeply. I wish few days of my life are also so meaningfully drowned in work

Saving his brothers and enemies at the same time is the pinnacle of what being a Christian really is. Value life. Even when you’re fighting a country where the enemy (satan) is heavily using his influence to keep his rule over earth and STILL valuing everyone as a Son of God. Amazing. Truly amazing. What an example! Bless Americas army and Pvt. Doss for what they did there to ensure our safety as a country and setting the example of how tyranny influenced by the devil will never win. the battle for our hearts will always be won by men/women who receive the power of Christ within them. when he goes out with Hollywood, you can clearly see in sergant face that Doss earned every single drop of his respect
They called him a coward, turns out, he was one of the bravest men in history.
So... Ashamed to say that I have only seen clips of this movie and, not the movie itself. It seems riveting and apparently based on a true story ( which I have also watched the clips of.) I have two days off coming up very soon and promise to watch this movie. Lots of love!

Doss's story needed to be told. God sent the world a angel to save several lives in a time where the world was being torn apart. Desmond Doss truly earned his place in the heavens. God bless him.
