I was 17 years old, and Australia was an amazing experience. When I got back to domestic Ohio, and High School, the Oil's "10-1" made far more sense. That’s the ultimate irony behind this song, it points out how fucked modern Australia is AND became one of the most popular songs of all time here, and yet people rarely look at the meaning of the lyrics past Peter Garrett’s funny dancing or how catchy the main guitar riff sounds. A song about how society is continually degraded and blinded to its own demise by rampant consumerism, and yet it became a shallow icon of that exact thing- consumerism.
One of the greatest rock songs ever. It's quite rare to see a song driven by drums first, which almost play the role of melody, then bass, then guitar instead of the other way around. It just works in every single way. A true classic.

I've loved this song forever. Never seen the video until now and I'm completely shook. Between the dancing and the annihilation of the drum kit, I'm officially done. Wow..
I remember when this video came out, lots of people thought it was so wild/crazy. One sees bald heads all of the time now, but back then in the 1980s it was pretty much unheard of! To see this big, totally bald guy "dancing" on stage, looking like Frankenstein's monster trying to rock to the beat, was phenomenal/outrageous. I remember a conversation with a guy and him telling me how wild he thought the video was. I'm not saying it was bad, it was just very different. Good song though!
I remember seeing this on MTV before getting into their music. Garrett's scarecrow mannequin dancing sure was like nothing seen before or after. Gotta love the originality of it all.

There are things in the lyrics you have to have lived in inner-city Sydney, to understand.
