  • My Top 10 Overrated Games based on current social media, BGG rankings, content on TH-cam etc.
    I love board games, I love gaming, don't get me wrong here when you read the title. But we all have things we dislike in gaming whether it's a specific genre, a theme, a mechanic, a publisher trait, a designer style, a player trope, whatever. Most are afraid to express these views.
    Well not me!! :P And this is the big one that always gets contention. Even more so that hated games - which is kind of weird, but I guess they overlap and also some games you state you hate are usually hated by everyone anyway.
    Just try not to over-react - it's purely opinion...........

    I have come to realize that when Luke hates a game, I will properly like it ;) (Terraforming Mars, Concordia, Great Western Trail, Lorenzo and Castles of Burgundy are among my top games). But still, I can differently see why he doesn't like them, and it really shows the diversity of game preference we see in the hobby.

      On the other hand for me Scythe is suuuuper boring while Barrage is extremely interesting and interactive. The theme is much more interesting in Scythe, which is why I'm sad it's not a more interactive game. :(

    The groupthink in boardgames groups gets on my nerves too. I have witnessed people asking for games for little kids and several replies suggesting Scythe or Gloomhaven. It sucks the will to interact out of me completely, when all the people would talk about is the same 2-3 games until the new hotness comes out then rinse and repeat.

    I appreciate videos like this more than many channels or reviewers that universally praise everything, or are terrified to say a negative thing out of fear. I agree with some like Concordia and TM, disagree with several (Castles, Gloomhaven, GWT, Orleans, Marco Polo) but despite having different tastes, still enjoyed the video! As I was watching I thought you might say Viticulture as it seems to hit lists like this.

    I really like this video...finally someone has echoed the points I have always made. Castle of Burgandy, Brass Birmingham, Gloomhaven, Terraforming Mars, and Great Western Trail all have such high spots in the rankings and I cannot figure out why. They are either too heavy/complicated for most (Gloomhaven), too dry (Castle of Burgundy, Great Western Trail), too similar to other games (Brass Birmingham, and/or too ugly (Castles of Burgandy). The only game on this list I actually like is Concordia and I agree with you insofar that it is too overhyped but I still think it is good. You mentioned other thematic euros instead of Concordia, you have examples? Great topic and list.

  • @nelwoltz7

    "I can't do anything in two rooms before I get fully exhausted? What kind of adventurers are you?!?!?"
    THIS. This was my primary complaint with Gloomhaven. I hate games with artificial time constraints like this. It totally takes me out of the experience when I can't even take one step to the side to pick up a coin for fear of running out of stamina. I mean, I get it if the building in question is on fire, but otherwise, are you kidding me?
    And Mage Knight may have the worst instruction manual in the history of gaming.

    I love Terraforming Mars. I don't find luck has much bearing on it at all. We have around 10 regular players in our gaming group and nearly every game of TM is won by 2 of us. They're are so many ways to score points that you can adjust your play style based on the cards you get and win consistently.
    The AP issue is massive though, and my solution is not to play it with a couple of the guys in our group because they take too long. But the rest of our group are pretty quick so that isn't a major problem for us.

    • @willyum3108
      @willyum3108 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The people complaining about TM being luck based don't understand how engine builders work, or better should I say, how to play them well.
      Pro Tip #57 and 58... Play (combo) with what you are given and dont try to force shit that you just dont have. Don't spread yourself too thin, but calculated risks can pay dividens, especially if it is something being neglected by the rest of the table.

    I agree on your analysis of the objective aspects of Mage Knight (like how much the game is mechanics versus theme), but I don't have the same opinion. I like the "puzzle" aspect of it so much, that I never feel the three hours passing. And to lose it never feels unsatifying. A matter of opinion, of course.

    You and I have some different tastes I believe on certain games. There are many games you have shown before that I have enjoyed but you picked some games that I really enjoy to call overrated. I would imagine it is that theme matters much more to you than me.
    I would put Concordia in one of my top 10 favorites and have been playing it at least once a week. GWT is also a game I really enjoy and Pfister is probably currently my favorite designer. I like Lorenzo il Magnifico but can understand some of your criticism. I backed Frosthaven as I like Gloomhaven but don't own it so it seemed like a good way to get in on the newer version. Finally I find Brass to be amazing in either version. It could also be top 10 for me.

    As always greatly enjoy your videos. And this was super entertaining. Can’t agree with some but taste is personal.
    Personally the games I can’t stand include Blood Rage, Through the Ages, Root and especially Gloomhaven. Gloomhaven reminds me of the old BSD Unix game of Rogue but without the ability to get in and out quickly. It requires commitment that it simply doesn’t deserve. I’m sure if someone is a big RPG fan this would be great for them but for me it’s an atrocious waste of time.

  • @FrasierFanMSU

    - Brass Birmingham feels much better than Lancaster to me, and I see them as very different games--there's a lot more ability to sell finished goods in Birmingham, it's somewhat harder to *completely* screw yourself over, and there are plenty of other refinements and tweaks. The mechanical differences are almost on par with Terra Mystica and Gaia Project. And Manufactured Goods are viable! You have to use develop actions to get past the levels that don't do what you need at the time, though. On the other hand, pottery appears to suck almost as much as shipyards did in Lancaster.
    - I liked Gloomhaven well enough the one time I played it, but I cannot imagine thinking it's the best game of all time. Pretty good dungeon crawler, though.
    - The Steam: Rails to Riches app was fun for a dozen plays or so. Spending 3 to 4 hours playing the physical game, let alone 5 or 6 hours for an 18xx, wouldn't appeal to me at all, though.
    - Terraforming Mars is just kind of boring. It's insanely long for what it is, the engine you're building mostly just moves cubes from lower to higher numbers, and of course the components and aesthetics are miles from even being average.
    - GWT: Your opinion is wrong ;)

    • @TheBrokenMeeple
      @TheBrokenMeeple  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shipyards, I loved them in Lancashire! With the MG's you have to make that extra effort to get to those stages which takes time and money. The other easier paths don't have that setback .

    • @JB-zi3dr
      @JB-zi3dr 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed. I went for the shipyard strategy last time in Lancashire (I kept drawing all the industry cards for them and little else) almost managed to get three of them out over the course of the game, but still ended up in 3rd place. Noticed that 2(!) of the 3 locations are completely useless in the canal era, because it's impossible to supply the coal required for construction. In the end I was absolutely crushed by the player that went for the cotton and mills. Maybe shipyards could be viable due to the low competition, but in that game I sure wasn't able to make them work for me.

      In MRP it's tied to role selection, everyone has the cards to begin with and the same cards as each other. There's room to gauge what's going to get played.
      With Concordia, there isn't, however it's not that part I don't like, it's the fact that the cards themselves are tied to scoring with some being far more powerful than others. Who's winning the game with 1 VP for every 10 cash vs simply building in every region? And no-one can buy my Pilot to mess me over, but they can buy all my Vp for goods cards I was after.

    Very entertaining and well-elaborated reasons, even though it would be hard to disagree more with your list. 4 of them in my top 10 favorites, another 4 that I enjoy, and 2 I haven't played. Even the (dis)honorable mention was opposite; I didn't like Architects of the West Kingdom, then hesitantly played Paladins and found it to be leagues better than Architects. Although I will say that a game on your shelf - Rajas of the Ganges - does the dice placement way better than Burgundy and Lorenzo. It's good to hear different and rational opinions, so I'm glad this video popped up in my recommendations.

I don't get to pick up the loot without wasting a card that can exhaust me before room 3? Nor can my party share gold? I purchased Gloomhaven, but did not back Frosthaven.

    I tried Gloomhaven and I thought I must have been doing something wrong, because the battle mechanics seemed to me like they wouldn't have survived playtesting. Having to choose between selecting the top or the bottom part of a card is perfectly fine, gives you a decision for each card, but the whole thing about having to discard the actions and then lose the scenario because thematically the characters are so exhausted that they collapse on the way? It's ridiculous. I don't know how it's rated so high beyond the amount of scenario content it has, and the guilt of the people who spent so much money for it.

    Enjoying the rants but cotton in Brass Lancashire can net you an absolute ton of points. Especially if you manage to build multiple mills and sell to a port with one action (4 instant flips is a huge swing in income and points). Also I find that strategically placed canal/rail links can be another excellent source of points.

  • @Therisktaker3
    @Therisktaker3 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    In a way I do agree with some of your points around terraforming mars. It is long and can be pretty luck based. There are a few things that I do when playing the game to address certain issues. 1. I have only played 2 player so that speeds up the game. 2. I think there is a modification in the rules of one of the expansions that each generation you add a heat, water, or oxygen to the board. Whoever is the start player picks which one to increase at the end of their turn. 3. I don’t remember which expansion it was that gave you a starting set of resources and or power and I have to play with that in order get going faster in the first age. 4. I believe in the beginner game you don’t pay for your cards in the initial draft and it has been a while, but I believe I played it that way in order to again speed up the game. 5. This is a personal preference, but we remove all take that cards from the game. All in all with the above tweaks we can get through a game in a little over 60 minutes which is about right for this game as well as removing the cards that would mess with someone. To me take that cards only belong in games with very little to no luck. If you have take that cards and a fair bit of randomness it can really swing the game around and really take the fun out of it.

    The big problem with the ranking for subsequent editions and versions of a game is that people that didn't like the previous version won't play the new one so won't rate it, and people that liked the previous version will usually like the update and rate it highly. So the versions don't get a balanced rating.

    A list like this is useful because players need some help in narrowing down where there should focus their attention in the sea of games out there. In general, I only play about once a week and buy about 10 games a year. There is a fairly high overhead of time to learn a new game; it's not like watching a movie. My time and money are limited, and I want a good chance of a pay off for the investment.
    It's interesting that Luke generally confirmed my impressions about several games that seemed to be "must haves" when I got into the hobby about a year ago. I've held off on C of B (the reprint that still looks bad didn't help), Gloomhaven, Brass, and Concordia. I'm pretty sure I won't miss them.

  • @gustavofaria5511

    I agree with you about the list except with Brass and Concordia.
    Brass Birmingham it's totally different from Lancashire, I really love Birmingham and Lancashire it's a ok game with a lot punishing. In Birmingham every game it's different because you randomise the market tiles; you can mitigate the lucky on card drafting with the scout action; and also I saw someone won the game with the manufactories, so...
    About Concordia, it's a easy and clever game with a deep strategy behind the cards you buy, and you have some map expansions with new rules, like Creta/Aegyptus maps.

    Luke, you’ve become one of my most respected reviewer‘s. You offer personal opinions backed by thorough explanations that are based off of multiple interactions with said game AND compare it to others within the same genre. Some people put up reviews without even doing a single full play-through. Or worse, they do a run-through without even understanding the rules. All for the sake of pushing out content and stamping it with positive reception.
    It also helps that we seem to have very similar tastes in games... My collection is probably pushing 5k USD and the only game I have on this top 10 list is Brass, but it’s Birmingham (and I’ve yet to actually play it bc something else always makes it to the table haha). I wanted so bad to back Frosthaven after missing out on Gloomhaven, so I got the digital version on Steam to get a sense for the mechanics. Granted, it’s not a complete game, but I literally fell asleep at my laptop multiple times. The game is boring as hell! I can’t even imagine what the physical version would be like. Just in the time it would take to set-up and tear-down, I could’ve played something else. It was a pass for me.

    when you played Barrage, probably you played with people that weren't able to play it at all. It's a really punishing game, when you learn to play it. You have to do more than a single game of it. This is the reason why it is climbing on bgg. People are playing it, and learning how deep and well balanced it is.

    • @TheBrokenMeeple

      Played it enough times prob 4 or so and that's with both new and vet players - plenty enough to know if I hate the game or not. I normally agree with you, but about Brass, I can't. The mechanics are great! The two era's feel great. The first player mechanic is really nice, your cards can be used for everything which I like. It's an awesome economic simulation type game. It could be that you don't like that type of game, but if you do this is the best one out there. I think that's the reason it's so high. Don't get me wrong, I can imagine people not liking this game, but that's mostly because of their taste more than about the quality of the game. One more thing, I think it's not too bad when you get behind. This game is a lot shorter than most heavy games. When you know this game you can play it within an hour to an hour and a half. Ofcourse, it's just my opinion! btw I still loved the video, I do agree with some of them! Keep up the good work!

    Thank you for making the Muttley reference and the Terraforming Mars rant make up for the rest of the video ;)
    Jokes aside, I like Concordia a decent bunch, but I'm somewhat with you on the blandness and the overblown variability of the non-special-rule maps. They look super pretty, but they're essentially just a web of cities connected by either land or sea. The specific geographical locations don't do anything unique except in few cases on certain maps. The second thing that gripes me a bit is that strategies overlap more than what is usually admitted. Yes, they differ, but for example, building in my first X type city in a new region helps me in like... every category except Mars (# of colonists), given I have the Minerva card for X. And if you're taking the "spread out a lot" path, you want more colonists to increase your movement. I haven't played the Venus expansion, but I guess the Venus god helps balancing this quite well, giving you 2 points for every region you have 2+ houses in (making a not-spread-out-so-much strategy more viable). There's always the choice of going more or less for cards, but the need to balance it with building makes everybody end up doing a lot of the same things. I would have liked it better if, depending on chosen strategy, there were always some non-Minerva cards that were almost *completely* useless to you. Anyways, bought the Salsa expansion recently, and playing with the Forum tiles the game hits the table once in a while.

I live in the western U.S. and my family were pioneers. Most of what went on here was ranching like seen in GWT and KC was the hotspot for distrubution to the West. Movies love to paint the west as wild, but that was actually short lived. Most people were cattle ranchers and dairy farmers! I can see your point on train games, but I like the theme. My question is, though, what's the difference between games of any other genre? A dungeon crawl is a dungeon crawl. A tile placement area control game is a tile placement area control game. A trump taking card game is a trump taking card game. Any genre can be boiled down to one or two mechanics. It's the extra, unique differences that make games stand out. Russian Rails is a train game with unique mechanics. 18xx games are not really train games, they're stock market games. If the focus of a 'train' game is not on rail system design and pickup/deliver, it's not a train game, it's a game with a train theme.

    Feld's "Oracle of Delphi" is pretty thematic and fun!

    Interesting list... There's a lot I agree with including Gloomhaven; which is tedious but Jaws of the Lion is a vast improvement. Terraforming Mars is utterly dull though, shocking game considering all the hype and love it gets.

    If publishers cash in on the success of a good game by bringing out more expansions and updates and variations, well, it's still a good game, it doesn't turn it into an over-rated game.

    I periodically look at the BGG ratings to try and find the next game to buy. I keep looking at Castles of Burgundy because of its rating, I watch a few review videos and a play through and always get to the same point - why? I can't see why this game gets so much love. I keep looking into this game and can't figure out why I'd like it.

      I'm the same, a games on the list feel that way. I keep thinking I should own them due to the hype, but I feel I would not like them. After this video I'm glad I did not buy them.

    Lol - can we find a better theme (than the Church) for games set in Medieval Europe? Dude, that was the theme of basically EVERYTHING at that place and time. There are a ton of futuristic space-themed games, and I can pretty much guarantee that none of them has a church track.

      Wouldn't put it past one to have a space church 🤣

    For gloomhaven i agree only for the hard setup, it needs an organizer. But with a good organizer its fast enough to setup it. As for the 3 hours for one session, man your group must be very slow.... we could do easy 2 sessions with 3 players, in that time.

      I remember the first game with 4 players taking over 3-4 hours. And i regularly see others taking forever. But including the setup for anyone without a dedicated costly organizer, it's still a mammoth. I got 4-5 other adventure games in my collection I can setup in no time at all, some because of app assistance I admit, but then that's a plus! Maybe for Frosthaven, he should have considered app integration.

    The church played a huge role in Medieval times. Sorry, but if that's the setting, it's probably going to be a part of you are going for the theme. But anyway.
