  • There's nothing better than cracking open a new board game and getting a group together to play it with. There is one thing that can go wrong though: What if the game doesn't live up to the billing? That's why this week we made a list of the games that we believe are the most overrated or overhyped out there.

    Elitist much? Target has some great board game sales, but I guess game sales are for us peasants, not the Almighty Gatekeepers

    • @BoardGameRundown
      @BoardGameRundown  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It does. And I buy games from Target too. But if someone has only ever bought games from Target and has never seen the actual reach of the hobby then I do think less of a list of "best games" by that person because they've only seen less than 1% of the hobby. They don't need to see more if they don't want to. They can be happy that's not only fine, but preferred. But if someone said, "I haven't played a board game since clue but I think Dune Imperium is a poorly designed game I'd want a really good explanation why -Dan

    Back in the olden days (like 10 years ago), when people were not assholes about everything, this would have been titled: "Games I/We Don't Like." Nowadays, we have to add a veneer of telling other people that the way they think is "wrong". Suggesting that people who like "Villianous" are not "real" gamers is the height of gatekeeping and board game snobbery.

    • @BoardGameRundown
      @BoardGameRundown  ปีที่แล้ว

      I like games that are over hyped. So that would be a misleading title. There’s nothing gatekeeping about saying these games probably get too much attention, I feel game X deserves more love. If you play games, you’re a gamer, but there are definitely different levels. We also strive to define the reasons we feel the way we do. So was Villainous the only game on the list you had an issue with?~Tim

      @chuckm1961 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BoardGameRundown it’s not the game, it’s what was said around the description of why the game is “overrated or overhyped“ or whatever. It’s the clear implication that there are “real“ gamers, and those other people. And we can dismiss the opinions of those other people, and no “real” gamers like Viilianous.
      Ps. I think V is a crap game. But I don’t actively disparage people who enjoy it.

      Yeah, honestly, this was just a straight up bad take. It would be like saying "Oh my goodness, Gloomhaven is SOO overated. I *hate* how you're rolling dice all the time." If you're going to criticize something as overrated, you need to at least know what you're talking about. Is there an argument to be made that D&D is overrated? Absolutely. But what was being attacked was a strawman of D&D.
      That said, not liking reading books probably also means that you're just not the kind of person that is going to enjoy it in the first place, because D&D does normally revolve around a story of some sort (even if it's a paper-thin one to justify a bucketload of dice-chucking combat).

    Really enjoyed this, you have a great group together and present the list in a very entertaining way! I've subscribed to the channel.
    Just wanted to add my strong disagreement with Spirit Island, as it's my favorite game of all time by quite a stretch. I don't know why it fell flat, but I'd recommend trying at least with an adversary on level 4 and do you best to beat it. I promise it'll get quite challenging and you're starting to have to make some really meaty and important decisions to beat it.
    Also I quite love Dice Throne, but I understand why it's not for everyone.
    My biggest disappointment was Dwellings of Eldervale. It's too much about the presentation and not too much substance. I didn't really like it that much when I was quite excited about it.

The pieces don't move on their own (you can remove the pieces anytime without completing the game) and your actions in the game do not affect the world around you. Spirit Island and Villainous are two of my absolute favorite games. I've played at least 100 hours of each. For different reasons. Spirit Island is a big, crunchy game that is super fun to learn the different spirits and their powers. It's not something that I'll play with other people. I generally don't like co-op games with other people, I usually just play them solo. It's also much better to play the game purely solo, just one spirit, before you ever play it with more than one spirit. Because that's how you learn the spirit. Playing with multiple spirits is only really for once you've learned the spirit and then experimenting with how the different spirits can interact. And don't even touch the adversaries and scenarios until you really understand the spirits you're playing with. It's something that you really need to take your time with, let the game breathe a little bit, don't jump into the deep end right away. Let the game show you what it can do.
    Villainous is super fun to me, probably because I do love Disney, but also because it's just fun to have different characters with completely different decks that are all trying to do something different. It's basically multi-player solitaire, but you're also playing the heroes of your opponents. I love learning the different villains and their strategies and trying to get good with them.

      @@BoardGameRundown And yet, I am a board gamer and love Villainous. Not just Villainous, multiple different games as well. That's not a fact. That's a matter of opinion. You can't have a fact about a person's taste in art. Who's to say that a person who only watches Michael Bay movies isn't a cinephile? That's incredibly judgmental. I could just as easily say that the only true gamers are people who only play Monopoly and Clue and anyone who plays other things isn't a true gamer. It's entirely a matter of opinion. Gatekeeping is not helpful for the hobby. We want MORE people to get into board gaming, not less. Telling someone that they're not a real gamer because you don't like their favorite game is unnecessarily exclusionary. With the Viticulture criticism, the guy third from the left said it correctly, none of those things are problems (e.g. not having the correct grapes or the correct wine orders), they are mitigated by just making better decisions and adjusting your strategy based on early card draws. You can get wine orders relatively early to know what you should go to but also you can be sure that you'll likely need both red and white grapes and you can mix grapes to make rose and sparkling wines. I think you might have been playing Inis incorrectly. The complaint was that victory conditions are checked at the end of the round and then if someone has the condition then you play another round and see if they still do. In Inis you actually would win at round end if you had met victory conditions and no one else had.
    There is a mechanic where you have to annouce that you have met a victory condition during the round (take a pretender token), but this isn't much like what was being said.
    That being said, it is true that the game lends itself to ganging up on whoever is closest to winning, and there are a lot of kingmaking opportunities in the game. I have also had some games go long because people will tie a bunch and that can extend it. One of the modules in the expansion (which doesn't require any extra pieces and can be implemented into the base game if desired) addresses this by giving tied players a bonus before entering the next round and making it so that future tied rounds will result in a shared victory. I have always found it really intriguing trying to avoid being the target and then trying to swoop in for a win.

    I disagree about Villainous franchise.
    I understand we hyped b/c of Iconic characters but all characters have asymmetrical which brings a lot of strategy to the game. The power tokens are meh (i agree) but there is so much replayability.
    i play Euro games and Mage Knight and i don’t consider Villainous to be a mainstream game at all. Most non-gamers wouldn’t like to play this game unless they are curious about board games.

    • @tbahr123
      @tbahr123 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have two main complaints about Villianous:
      1. Holy crap is it long with 4+ players and there is nothing to do when it is not your turn. AP can be a big problem and make it even longer to sit there and watch everyone else take their turns.
      2. The nature of the fate deck means that the perceived leader just gets piled on and makes the game last even longer.
      The theme is fun but every time I play I am underwhelmed and it takes so long.

    • @thesolitairegambit2556
      @thesolitairegambit2556 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tbahr123 I can see that being a problem at a higher player count. Honestly, I would never play any villainous game at 4 player 😅 I mostly like two player games or solitaire so that’s not an issue for me.
      In my experience, the Fate action is not played that much unless I feel like in a tight situation and must use it to prevent my opponent from winning. In a lot of cases, the Fate deck can either work for your or against you.
      I appreciate your feedback 😁

    • @grog3514
      @grog3514 ปีที่แล้ว

      Villainous isn't asymmetrical. You have to be playing the same game to have that. In villainous, everyone plays their own game that shares the action selection mechanic. That also means winning is pointless. It just means they completed their solo exercise first. If you decide to look up at the other people around the table, you will notice everyone just looking quietly at their cards or board. It's awful.

    Folks trashing Candyland as a game and comparing it to games meant for older kids (Connect 4 is more ages 4+) or even adults is ridiculous to me. It's like criticizing a picture book because it isn't Shakespeare or Dickens. Candyland is meant to be one of the first games a child ever encounters, at ages 2-3. This is before they know how to read and when they are hitting the stage of brain development to be capable of more interactive play with others. Candyland absolutely does teach. It teaches counting (# colored squares on the card), colors, and basic mechanics of gaming such as taking turns (which is also socialization skill-learning), drawing cards, moving pieces forwards and back (and even the concept of forward vs. backward), etc. All set in a fun, candy-focused world. It's just right for its intended audience at their level of brain development. Compared to other board games for the same demographic of 2-3 year olds (Feed the Kitty, etc.) it holds its own just fine.

      I think quality comes in tiers, regardless of complexity. While you make a fair point about Connect 4 being for older ages, Candyland is outdated, overrated, and thus needs to experience some revitalization.
      You could be one draw away from defeating your two year old, only to draw a Peppermint card, sending you back to the start. It’s random, it’s unfair, and I want a way to strategically beat my children in games* in order to establish the hierarchy in the household.

    As a Magic player I will say its one of my favorite card games, but I do play board games and other card games. I have two groups of friends though, one that only wants to play Magic and the other that hates Magic and only plays board games or standalone card games like Sentinels. One of the points to the video was how Magic players just say its the best game out there and dont like anything else is wrong. I play D&D, Pathfinder, Magic, Flesh and Blood(I wish my friends would actually play this with me...), and other board/card games. I will say I don't really care for Yu-Gi-Oh! I even grew up playing with some kids from school and had a simple Blue-Eyes White Dragon deck which after a few years just stopped being playable. I also grew up playing Magic and always had more fun, I still have a Mono-Green deck from my childhood that is decent, I make upgrades once a year on it. I also have had more people in my life play Magic than Yu-Gi-Oh! so I go with the former. It's also not the greatest card game ever. I like Cribbage way better.
    Edit: Just finished the video. I would like to throw Gloomhaven as my number one over-hyped game. I think it may have been the people I played with but I just didn't enjoy it and honestly didn't see what the hype was about.
    I was also surprised that 7 Wonders wasn't said by anyone. I love that game, but the base game is too simple. And all I've seen when I go to other people's places to play games is the base game, drives me nuts. Finally is Catan for me. I love resource gathering and Catan helped get my feet wet in the early years of my adult life and finding good board games. But I would rather play anything else.

    Got so tired of the comparissons between Lords of Waterdeep and Champions of Midgard, especially the rhetoric that the only reason people liked Waterdeep was because of the D&D theme. Well, I'm nordic, so vikings are kinda in my genes, I've never ever played D&D, still vastly prefer Lords of Waterdeep to Champions. Champions was more or less a rinse and repeat of get more dice, lose dice fighting monsters, get more dice. Board felt static, basically no player scaling. In Waterdeep at least we build out the board, we have intrigue cards and plot quests. Way, way more fun.
    Hated Inis (I'm not generally into area control, but I especially hated Inis), the whole experience was drafting the same stupid cards over and over again, thinking I can play a card only to be told I can't, getting beat on over and over again because even if you pass the opponent can just keep doing it. Horrible experience. Kill it with fire, please.
    I love Voyages of Marco Polo, it's among my favourites. I keep hearing the contract strategy being superior argument, but I keep playing the travelling strategy and for the most part I make it work well and I tend to win. Obviously I don't ignore the contracts, it's all about making it work for you. Traveling contracts are a great way of getting outposts out if you use them at opportune moments. The income and city abilities can be great. Marco Polo 2 does more balance out travel with contracts, but I still have a great time playing Voyages.
    Wholly agree that Dominion and Carcassonne are vastly overrated. I thought for a long time that I hated deckbuilding - no I actually love deckbuilding, I just don't like Dominion's style of deckbuilding. And Carcassonne is essentially all about the luck of the draw. Every time I have played it it feels like I keep drawing stupid roads and opponents draw better things. And yeah, people argue that you can play a blocking strategy - but I HATE playing a blocking strategy in games, so there is just zero appeal to Carcassonne. There are SO many vastly superior tile layers now.
    However, love and adore Ticket to Ride, still my go-to intro game for people and I have played nearly every map there is.
    As for Terraforming Mars, I love both it, Underwater Cities and Ark Nova. Happily play either of them and they're all in my collection. I definitely am more of a purist with Terraforming Mars, prelude is the only expansion I use (I got custom upgraded boards before they released the official dual-layered ones). I agree about the production critisisms, but love and adore the game.

      My age/friend group when I came into MTG likely plays a big role in my thoughts, because i cant argue with much of what you said. I got into MTG mostly during the Odyssey block in 2001, when my friend and I were in 8th grade/freshman in HS. We scrapped together cash for booster packs, tried to piece together decks together in our parents basements, and pulled all nighters testing our decks against each other. Still the height of my gaming life. We then discovered tournaments at game stores where we took our cobbled together decks that we had so much love for, and got completely crushed by 'old guys with decks they bought individual cards for off ebay'. That did kill the 'magic' for us I will admit. We thankfully found that joy again by doing booster drafts (because it recreated that feel of being with your buddies and experimenting with card combinations).
      So in summary, I see where you are going... Can't really disagree, but MTG still holds a top spot in my history of gaming joy.

    I agree with a some of these -- Dice Throne (It helped me to figure out that I dislike the yachtzee-like mechanic in most games) is one of my biggest disappointments of games I've purchased. I believed the hype. I played it several times with friends, thinking that the next time, I'd probably enjoy it more, that I might be missing something. And I never liked it. I hid it far in the back of a closet so that my friends would not ever see it on my shelves and think to ask to play it.
    Other hyped games that I've had bad times playing include Wingspan, Lost Ruins of Arnak, Puerto Rico, and Smash Up.
    BTW, back in the day, I reviewed MTG for a regional (New Jersey) publication right around when it was first released. I didn't like it, but I did recognize and report on how I thought it might be a decent collectable. Putting my money where my mouth was, I made enough money on Magic cards that I was able to pay for a nice vacation to Europe (Paris, London, Edinburgh, and Glasgow, plus the World Science Fiction convention in Glasgow) solely based on reselling about 50 to $100 worth of unopened magic display boxes.

    1. There was a lot of banter trailing about each game which freaky added to the length. This is a bit long for this and makes if tough to sit through.
    2. There were a few comments made about gaming that come across as gatekeepers. Eg. Growing when someone tells you they're gamer but play Ticket To Ride or Azul. We all start somewhere and some of us still like those games. I've enjoyed The Dice Tower abs just felt like comments like those really go against the channels goal to promote gaming.
    3. I found it a bit odd that many of the games that were chosen fit this episode had never been played by the person picking the game. D & D would serve a the best example of that.

    My most overhyped is Everdell. The theme and at design are undeniable but I have never had fun with it despite some very earnest attempts to appreciate it. Way too much luck. • @jackskellingtonsora
      @jackskellingtonsora ปีที่แล้ว

      That's always going to be the case with tableau building games. There's always going to be luck involved with card draw. Terraforming Mars or Ark Nova are the same way. That's not a bad thing, to me at least, it's just inherent in the genre. The resource economy is designed around you getting resources by playing cards and by playing free cards by having the linked buildings. So you play cards to get resources to play other cards. That's another inherent part of tableau building games. I think the weirdness is it also being a worker placement game, but I think it's an interesting twist to have everyone end their season at different times and then keep going. So that way you're hoping that someone ends their season so that you can get on their spot.

    Oh no you didn't! Carcassonne has much more interesting decisions than some may think. The farmers require forward planning and spatial perception. Invading into enemy structures is fun and defending your own is tense. Spend your meeples efficiently. Maximize the number of tiles you can utilize. It's so great. RPGs are not about acting really. Acting is totally optional. It's OK to "just" describe what your character does and says. RPGs provide an extreme level of freedom. I can’t believe people like Ankh. It’s so horrible. Worst experience I’ve ever had with a game.

      Man, I'm sorry to hear that. We all have that here and there though. Dominant Species always falls flat for me. New hotness Cat in the Box always just makes me angry lol
      I'll consider myself lucky that all my games of Ankh have been a great time I guess :) -Dan

      I’d love to hear why your experience was so
      bad, I love the game, but I get it. ~Tim

    This popped up on my videos to watch and then you attack Euchre right off the bat. You are lucky I stayed to the end. You are luckier I might listen to another.

      I’m glad you found us, and we are definitely lucky anyone watches at all. Thanks for sticking around, and Andrew is a monster, so of course he attacks Euchre. 😎😎😎~Tim

      @@BoardGameRundown Well I need to see how that DnD one shot goes. Maybe you can quest to prove that Euchre is a good game.
