The ULEZ zone is an absolute joke. I live just in the outskirts of Greater London, so regularly cross into London boroughs. Just to visit friends and family, or go to the shops, is £12.50! Alex, you could always go the other way and get an older car. Take my 1965 Mustang for example, ULEZ exempt, Tax exempt and MOT exempt! Not to mention classic insurance of sub £350 with full European breakdown included as well as an agreed value of £45k.
Always be careful when saying "you can go the other way...." I once crashed a 66 Mustang into an 80 year old mans MK2 Escort whilst driving the wrong way down a one way street while fleeing from the the chasing driver of another car that I used poor judgement and called a wan**er. I like to think that I learnt from this.

I’ve looked into this. There are ULEZ compliant cars that start from £500. And I don’t know if you’ve ever lived in London, you can’t do it on a shoe string anyway. You either have the money to run a car there or you don’t and use public transport. Not one person arguing against this shows any anger towards car manufacturers who have been producing cars for years that produce toxic emissions at ground level and are especially harmful in built up urban areas such as London. But anyway, if you can’t afford to change your car to a ULEZ one, which start at £500, you have messed up priorities. This is the factual argument I use that shuts every naysayer down immediately. £500. Also public consultations are wildly biased towards NIMBY types and most progress would grind to a halt if we listened to career contrarians.

Also live in london, east end myself. Recently this week sold my first car, a VW Polo Blue GT trading in for a new car, so I can relate to the sadness. The bit I relate to the most is the living in London bit. The borough I live in charges an emission fee on top of the cost of the parking permit. So despite buying a new car which meets emission standards, the borough is charging me for having a hybrid car that puts out 139g/km to the tune of another £100 a year on top of the £100 it costs for my parking permit. But, people who have drives and have older e36's are not being charged for the boroughs emissions tax to drive their cars... Logic?

I actually have the 3.0i X5 manual, with the M54 engine. It has never had any reliability issues, save for a door lock actuator. Always started as long as the battery wasn't dead, ran for hundreds of miles a day sometimes, transported an entire college dorm room of stuff, and was just a joy to drive. I'm never selling it

I'm very sad to see diesel forced out of the market In my opinion it still is the best engine. It runs at a lower rpm mostly giving the engine a lot less wear. The mpg are also a lot better than a petrol car. I've always drive diesel, now I have a petrol car (a pretty fun one tho) but I'll always have a special place in my heart for my first 3 diesels.
And we were encouraged by the government to buy diesels, as they gave better MPG. ULEZ is just a new tax, which has been increased because covid cut the profits of London Transport, so they want it back by any means necessary.

If the cameras are just at the boundary and you never cross it, can you just keep driving day after day with no charge? The gov website says you won't be charged for the days your car is parked inside the boundary but how do they know? Are they now also going to be using cameras dotted around within the boundary to spy on us? If someone can find some official info on this I'd love to see it.

Really wondering if it's more enviromentally "clean" to scrap working cars and to produce new ones, manufacturing surely will cause emmissions aswell, or do those not count, because they are produced abroad.
ULEZ is not about the wider environment though, it's about gasses that are toxic to human health. For example, a 1.25 Ford Fiesta from the late 1990s isn't compliant. A 4.0 V8 Range Rover from last year is, despite the latter kicking out way more CO2.

@@biziluxgames8924 A Cayenne S will NEVER do 8 L/100km. Best you can do in of these is about 12 L/100km, but only going downhill while not accelerating. From personal experience it's more like urban -> 18 L/100km, Extra Urban -> 12,8 L/100km, combined around 15L/100km.

Funny that you mentioned that B5 S4 doesn't meet the criteria BUT if you have a Y-Reg one it does, because my father has a Y-Reg B5 RS4 and on the TFL checker, it meets the criteria. This is where what cars meet the criteria gets weird, because how it works is that cars have to meet or be below the NOx levels set in the euro 4 (or euro 6 for diesels) so if you have a Pre 2001 car (when it wasn't mandatory for manufacturers to state CO2 and NOx on their vehicles) it simply isn't compliant but if you have a car that is 2001 or later, simply enter your reg into the TFL ULEZ checker and you might be surprised. (The 2006 and 2016 rules are just rough estimates of where the line is, so always check!) But it does make an interesting example in the case of certain cars like the B5 S4s where despite having the same engine and emissions, having a pre-2001 one isn't compliant and a 2001 and later one is. Thought people might find this interesting.

@@dbs5212 It's not "going green" though. This one is to do with human health, not the planet overall. That's why you get big V8 petrols that are cleaner than 1.3 Toyotas - they have more advanced emissions systems that get rid of carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides.

My 2014 diesel turbo Mazda CX-5 actually doesn't get hit by the ULEZ! I was surprised, as I thought it was anything older than 2016, but it somehow meets the standard when I did the online checker. My RX-8 also doesn't require me to pay ULEZ charge. Figure that one out!
I have a 2023 Ford diesel ordered that has no form of hybridization. Just a 6.7L v8 TD. We don't use little crossovers like the X5 and Porsche Cayenne to tow.

I couldnt believe your x5 would do 36mpg on a run! Unfortunately get yourself ready for 22 on a steady motorway run, 16 on local runs and about 8mpg if you stick a 3.5 ton trailer on the back! I am wondering. You have a vintage car programme, in which cars older that 50 years get special treatment like no MOT, if I remember correctly. Other that it being 20 years later than in Germany, you get plenty of benefits, I think. In Germany you also get exempt from emission zones if it got registered as a vintage car. Is that the case with ULEZ, too? Though you would have to wait a few years to get the X5 back for that.
Make sure to do research if you own an older petrol car. I'm currently in the process of getting my 2001 bmw 530i exempt, as it meets euro 4 but is older than 2006. DVLA ask for certificate of conformity or a letter from your manufacturer confirming your car is compliant.

I wouldn't feel too bad. It was on DAVANTI tyres. There not quite as bad as Landslides. (Landsail). It's on point for the channel. Get a reliable tow car & sell it. Buy something else that's going to leave you stranded on the hard shoulder. With another car sat on a trailer. The AA f**king love recovering a three car train. I know. Especially on the M6 Toll Road, where in 2005 it cost nearly £50 to go through the toll with a recovery wagon, with my car on the back, and a trailer with a rally car on it.
One good thing in living in a small town is I don’t have to worry about my Diesel car being targeted. We have these zones here in Sweden too but thankfully not in small towns.

It's crazy to think that if I lived in the London area I would be force to get rid of my 2015 Megane diesel which is only 7 years old. I get the idea of making big ubran areas greener but that's a bit too much. Here in Madrid we have also restricted areas which get larger every year but they only affect petrol cars before 2000 and diesels before 2006
2nd hand bargains if you live outside the ULEZ zone.... But if you live inside it, then enjoy the prices of 2nd hand cars going through the roof in the same way motorcycles have. For some reason people seem to think adding the words "ULEZ compliant" means they can whack another couple of grand on the asking price!
Alex, that either needs a new battery, or a new starter motor. The starter motor is in the middle of the V of the engine and it's a common failure as it gets baked with heat and sometimes drenched when the plastic coolant pipes burst.
My 03 Ford focus is euro star 3 and it’s ulez compliant. I keep checking every other day to make sure because everyone I know keeps on saying it can’t be compliant because the engine wasn’t made after 06 and it’s not a euro star 4 car. But all the ulez checkers and car apps say it’s fine. It’s making me paranoid 😂
How about exploring options for EURO4,5,6 and further upgrades? Especially for EURO4 there are a few options of which the biggest problem is definitely not technical but more inspection and registration related. It is possible in EU in some countries, so really it should be possible in other EU countries too. (Maybe the previous ones too lol)
I love bmws, specifically old ones.. My dream car is a bmw e34, m50 or m60 engine, this video made me feel I'd never get it as Im still young and have a long way to go but I have a feeling we will not be seeing those kind cars on the road by any near the future 😢

If the 60 odd families that control 50% of the wealth paid for their cars on a wealth based system in regards to things like fines and tax, no one else would have to pay a thing but we don’t live in a fair world mate so I’d suggest just sucking it up and paying the 12 quid, less stress.

Also live in london, east end myself. Recently this week sold my first car, a VW Polo Blue GT trading in for a new car, so I can relate to the sadness. The bit I relate to the most is the living in London bit. The borough I live in charges an emission fee on top of the cost of the parking permit. So despite buying a new car which meets emission standards, the borough is charging me for having a hybrid car that puts out 139g/km to the tune of another £100 a year on top of the £100 it costs for my parking permit. But, people who have drives and have older e36's are not being charged for the boroughs emissions tax to drive their cars...

I actually have the 3.0i X5 manual, with the M54 engine. It has never had any reliability issues, save for a door lock actuator. Always started as long as the battery wasn't dead, ran for hundreds of miles a day sometimes, transported an entire college dorm room of stuff, and was just a joy to drive. I'm never selling it

In my opinion it still is the best engine.
It runs at a lower rpm mostly giving the engine a lot less wear.
The mpg are also a lot better than a petrol car.
I've always drive diesel, now I have a petrol car (a pretty fun one tho) but I'll always have a special place
in my heart for my first 3 diesels.

And we were encouraged by the government to buy diesels, as they gave better MPG. ULEZ is just a new tax, which has been increased because covid cut the profits of London Transport, so they want it back by any means necessary.
@@thatguyuk1 Simple really. More people bought diesel over petrol, which meant fewer stops at the pumps, which meant less tax going to the government. Something had to be done, hence this ULEZ crap. Same thing is happening to EVs.

ULEZ is criminal and should not be allowed to happen. But one thing I can't find any info on is what if your car always remains within the boundary? If the cameras are just at the boundary and you never cross it, can you just keep driving day after day with no charge? The gov website says you won't be charged for the days your car is parked inside the boundary but how do they know? Are they now also going to be using cameras dotted around within the boundary to spy on us? If someone can find some official info on this I'd love to see it.
They will absolutely be pursuing as much money as they can get from you. Anticipate that. They will use all technology available, incrementally, to enforce these laws. Make no mistake, it's going to get far worse. We're living in the "good ol' days" right now.

ULEZ is not about the wider environment though, it's about gasses that are toxic to human health. For example, a 1.25 Ford Fiesta from the late 1990s isn't compliant. A 4.0 V8 Range Rover from last year is, despite the latter kicking out way more CO2.

@@biziluxgames8924 A Cayenne S will NEVER do 8 L/100km. Best you can do in of these is about 12 L/100km, but only going downhill while not accelerating. From personal experience it's more like urban -> 18 L/100km, Extra Urban -> 12,8 L/100km, combined around 15L/100km.

This has, "Buy an electric car if you can't afford gas" vibes that popped up here in the US last year when gas prices started climbing. I can understand the desire to clear up air quality in such a heavily occupied area, but seriously.
The ULEZ expansion is a travesty. Revenue generation, which could backfire. With home working now established as a real option for people, their is likely to be an exodus from the capital/major cities with expanding ULEZ's. Talking of which Alex did you consider moving?
The whole point is to destroy the middle class. They're doing similar things in America, but nowhere near as aggressively. They'll riot, unlike in the UK. They'll just keep taking the hits and roll over, and that doesn't feel good to say. Its upsetting to watch.
Funny that you mentioned that B5 S4 doesn't meet the criteria BUT if you have a Y-Reg one it does, because my father has a Y-Reg B5 RS4 and on the TFL checker, it meets the criteria. This is where what cars meet the criteria gets weird, because how it works is that cars have to meet or be below the NOx levels set in the euro 4 (or euro 6 for diesels) so if you have a Pre 2001 car (when it wasn't mandatory for manufacturers to state CO2 and NOx on their vehicles) it simply isn't compliant but if you have a car that is 2001 or later, simply enter your reg into the TFL ULEZ checker and you might be surprised. (The 2006 and 2016 rules are just rough estimates of where the line is, so always check!) But it does make an interesting example in the case of certain cars like the B5 S4s where despite having the same engine and emissions, having a pre-2001 one isn't compliant and a 2001 and later one is. Thought people might find this interesting.

That's why you get big V8 petrols that are cleaner than 1.3 Toyotas - they have more advanced emissions systems that get rid of carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides.

I live in Doncaster and last year the powers that be decided to change Doncaster from a town to a city. So I’m guessing this will be somewhere in the planning for us as well, it’s going to be another nail in the coffin for the “city” as developers move more and more shopping centres further out of the area.

My 2014 diesel turbo Mazda CX-5 actually doesn't get hit by the ULEZ! I was surprised, as I thought it was anything older than 2016, but it somehow meets the standard when I did the online checker. My RX-8 also doesn't require me to pay ULEZ charge. Figure that one out!

I have a 2023 Ford diesel ordered that has no form of hybridization. Just a 6.7L v8 TD. We don't use little crossovers like the X5 and Porsche Cayenne to tow.

Hi Alex, i also have a manual cayenne s. It took me so long to find a manual one as i dont think they made many. Its a fantastic car that ticks so many boxes for me. I couldnt believe your x5 would do 36mpg on a run! Unfortunately get yourself ready for 22 on a steady motorway run, 16 on local runs and about 8mpg if you stick a 3.5 ton trailer on the back! Looking forward to seeing your videos on this car. Keep up the good work.

I am wondering. You have a vintage car programme, in which cars older that 50 years get special treatment like no MOT, if I remember correctly.
Other that it being 20 years later than in Germany, you get plenty of benefits, I think.
In Germany you also get exempt from emission zones if it got registered as a vintage car. Is that the case with ULEZ, too?
Though you would have to wait a few years to get the X5 back for that.
Make sure to do research if you own an older petrol car. I'm currently in the process of getting my 2001 bmw 530i exempt, as it meets euro 4 but is older than 2006. DVLA ask for certificate of conformity or a letter from your manufacturer confirming your car is compliant.
The ULEZ scares me. I'm extremely lucky to be inside a clean air zone that only applies to commerical vehicles... for now.

One good thing in living in a small town is I don’t have to worry about my Diesel car being targeted. We have these zones here in Sweden too but thankfully not in small towns.

I have a gorgeous, but non compliant Jag. I'm keeping it. I only use it every now and again for longer journeys. It's cheaper to occasionally pay the fine than to buy a newer car.

It's crazy to think that if I lived in the London area I would be force to get rid of my 2015 Megane diesel which is only 7 years old. I get the idea of making big ubran areas greener but that's a bit too much. Here in Madrid we have also restricted areas which get larger every year but they only affect petrol cars before 2000 and diesels before 2006
2nd hand bargains if you live outside the ULEZ zone.... But if you live inside it, then enjoy the prices of 2nd hand cars going through the roof in the same way motorcycles have. For some reason people seem to think adding the words "ULEZ compliant" means they can whack another couple of grand on the asking price!

M57 an absolute legend engine. We will never have another diesel engine like it!
Alex, that either needs a new battery, or a new starter motor. The starter motor is in the middle of the V of the engine and it's a common failure as it gets baked with heat and sometimes drenched when the plastic coolant pipes burst.
My 03 Ford focus is euro star 3 and it’s ulez compliant. I keep checking every other day to make sure because everyone I know keeps on saying it can’t be compliant because the engine wasn’t made after 06 and it’s not a euro star 4 car. But all the ulez checkers and car apps say it’s fine. It’s making me paranoid 😂
How about exploring options for EURO4,5,6 and further upgrades? Especially for EURO4 there are a few options of which the biggest problem is definitely not technical but more inspection and registration related. It is possible in EU in some countries, so really it should be possible in other EU countries too. (Maybe the previous ones too lol)
