    Just purchased the Pi max 2 days ago and you hit the nail on 2 specific points. It is picky on portable dac/amps ( i found it west best with the IFI Hip Dac, with a slight warm, laid back signature and ample power). The 2nd point you were spot on is, the timeless is less resolving and revealing than the P1 max. (i have the timeless as well). Overall the best tuned Planar. Thanks Dave.

    It’s $100 USD right now. Half the Timeless and more than half the Hook-X. And about $50 USD less than the S12. So, I think it’s the better choice right now, for the price.

      @@matusjurcik6974 I would describe them as being a bit on the bright side of neutral with an emphasis on the upper mids/lower treble. It’s an area where I know that I can be hypersensitive to but that’s a personal thing. Some may be just fine with its tuning. That’s not to say that I don’t like it. It’s just to say that I like the Timeless more. What I would say is that at its current sub $100 price, I’d consider it to be a bargain. It’s a great choice for an EDC. It’s better than a TinHifi T3+ and smoother than an og Tripowin Olina although I do prefer a modded Olina over it.

      Well it took way longer for the earphones to get to my location than expected (exactly 50 days). I'll get straight into it and confirm all of your finding regarding P1 Max.
      They are very source dependent. I run my desktop on Fiio K7 and on that they sound amazing. High resolution, note weight and definition, increased dynamics and stage.
      That said on my iBasso DC 05 they sound very bland and non exciting in any way. They even lose some midrange on that dongle and dynamics especially. For someone who plans on using this with the dongle on the phone that sucks. Oh well i guess an upgraded dongle is due. I'll follow your observation and go for the FC4.
      I fully agree that this is the least obvious planar I've heard. It sounds very natural and neutral. There is a slight hump in midbass though. In my opinion that famous "planar" timber comes mostly from the increased energy in the treble which most manufacturers love to shove in our ears these days.
      Oh and one more thing, I've ordered the wide bore Spring Tips to check that out as well and see if I like it more or less. I have a plethora of tips but none of which are wide bore so that should be interesting.
      Anyway thank you once again for providing us (in this case me 🤣) with a very good insight on how these sound. I can probably blindly buy anything that matches my sound preference based on your reviews which is saying a lot as I'm a picky bastard 😆

    Great review Dave! I bought the Tinhifi p1 max and sent it back because it sounds like a dd to me. It’s not a bad IEM, but it’s a bit overpriced by $20 imo. I think the plastic housing could have something to do with the sound as well. I will be looking at the TRN Kirin when it comes out. Linsoul is selling the Kirin on their site for about $130. Saw your review on the Elixir and may take a chance on it! I did plug the P1 Max into my rebuilt iPod classic and it did sound pretty good, but everything else meh.

    Hi Dave. Thanks for another excellent & thorough review. Taking some cues from your review, it seems the P1 Max has similar sound characteristic Tin Hifi T3+? Albeit with more resolution and air (hence the driver, Planar). Especially when you described the soundstage accuracy (and then I compared to your review about the T3+). Enlighten me, please. As for Planar, I am more familiar with home audio speakers, and I reckon they need (good) power to shine (based on my experience with Maggies, they shone when driven with Pass Aleph, not the likes of Rotel), plus the fact that P1 Max has, if not mistaken, relatively low sensitivity at 98±3dB @1kHz 0.126V. Do you think is really necessary to have a dedicated amplifier for an iem?

    • @TheHonestAudiophile
      @TheHonestAudiophile  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends on the IEM, some are harder to drive and respond better with better power. Usually the more powerful dongles are able to drive an IEM to potential. Planar IEM tend to be a little picky with power.

    hey dave, just want to thank you for this review. i bought this set for around $90 at my local store which is an absolute steal and i must say this is one of the best iem i ever heard! the tonality in this is amazing and just beat most iems that are more expensive. the details are excellent either altho not as good as Variations or Mangird Top but still amazing regarding the price i bought this. thankyou so much for your review sir!

    Thanks for the detailed commentary, Dave. I'm on the fence between this P1 Max and the S12. My Qudelix 5k can output 240mw in balanced configuration. Do you reckon this would be enough do get at least a decent sound out of these planar IEMs? Which of the two are more demanding? For reference, I'm coming from the Shuoer Tape Pros (been using it for two years now but recently lost one side...) which, believe it or not, I quite liked despite it being very unkind to poorly mastered or older tracks.

    • @TheHonestAudiophile
      @TheHonestAudiophile  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think you will get the best experience for either but it should be tolerable. The P1 Max is slightly more demanding.

    Will an android phone be able to drive this iem to its potential? Say mid range phones.

    • @TheHonestAudiophile
      @TheHonestAudiophile  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      NO! In my opinion a phone is not providing the correct power for the P1 Max. A more powerful dongle, Hiby FC4, or portable amp, Topping NX7, is the minimum in my opinion. I highly recommend using any of the planar IEM on desktop amplifiers for optimal performance.

      Very subjective question but here are a few of the natural, accurate soundstages that I can think of in various price ranges.
      Akoustyx R110
      Moondrop Kato
      Tin Hif P1 Max
      JQ 4U Pro

    • @TheHonestAudiophile

      P1 Max has more detail retrieval and resolution, more accurate tone and timbre, less treble aggression and harshness, more accurate stage width, depth and layer and more impactful and accurate bass presentation. In my opinion the P1 Max is a big upgrade to the iDun Golden when powered correctly.

I'm glad you liked the tin p1 max. Is it a very large phone as shown in the photos? my ears are not big, they are medium, if the size of tin p1 max is similar to tin t2 plus i will be relieved.

    The phones have no amp power most of the time, that's a real problem in terms of driving any headphones or IEMs. I also cannot stand BT stuff so far because you're stuck with
    the power output of the device and the BT phones or IEMs.

      @@TheHonestAudiophile I actually like BT for convenience sometimes, but I don't expect good sound, that's the problem. I don't blast my music super loud but I love the quality and power of a good headphone amp, and having a bass switch on it too, and gain. If the next iPhone I bought had A. an amp built-in and B. still had a headphone output minijack I would be much happier. Or BT IEMs with an amp in 'em somehow, though this is not going to happen. I read the Sadies headphones have an amp built-in, but they look ridiculous.

      @@TheHonestAudiophile I see, that's certainly an interesting design idea, I just don't love their designs, Blue. Bulky and
      bizarre. I have heard they sound good, though. I recently got one of these WKIng type 80 watt BT speakers and THAT'S quite good! Sounds fantastic and has power and bass to burn. But headphones...nah. I have the HIfiman HE400Is and those are my champ home headphones for sheer detail and "subtle music" listening. I don't really bother using them for rock or very primitive music at all.
