Getting married and having children are normalised within society because the resulting duty that is imposed upon both parties keeps them in check, and goes some way to preventing revolutionary uprisings. Not having children is the single best thing you can do for your own welfare, and that of the planet. It gives you more freedom, more options, and more money. People often have kids before they’ve had a chance to really consider those implications.
I think that chemotherapy joke was actually making a broader point about how we gamble with someone else's life when we choose to have kids. "Luck of the draw" is exactly what it is. You can have the best genes in the world, it still doesn't eliminate the chances of creating a child that will suffer with some kind of disability (whether physical or mental) or condition. The difference with gambling on a football match, say, is you at least know the odds. With having children, you don't know the odds and furthermore you're gambling with someone else's money, literally their life savings. But forget all that because "I want kids".
Yes. Forcing someone into existence is very obviously a gamble, a gamble the one who has been brought into existence didn't consent to. It's not just c*ncer, but illness/sickness in general, as well as m*rder, r*pe, ab*se, expl*itation, discr*mination, w*r, experiencing natural disasters etc., the list is long and there is only so much we can do; at the end of the day it'll always be a gamble. One thing that would interest me is hearing the opinions of people who aren't ignorant of the gamble itself and are still willing to gamble. When is a unlucky "too unlucky", when is it "too risky"? Like, if there was a 50/50 percent chance your 2yr old kid gets c*ncer and suffers horribly for a few months before dyi*g an agonizing de*th, are those chances good enough for some people? If not, what is the magical number where people feel like it would be fair to gamble? 25%? 10? 1%? (Had to censor a lot of words, comment always got locked)

When someone calls me selfish for not wanting children I tell them it's actually selfish to WANT children. Think about it. No child asks to be born and the only reason you bring one into this world is because YOU want to be a parent. YOU want to leave a legacy, YOU want to be taken care of in your old age etc. I don't want a child because I can honestly say I don't want to be responsible for another person's life. I don't even understand the concept of calling it 'selfish' not to have kids! Right, 'cause it's so righteous to make a kid when you're not even in a position to provide them with a good, stable life! I always thought I will have a family one day and am prepared to give all my love & devotion to them and do my utmost best to make them happy. But at 31, with my family getting on my back about it not having happened yet and me not even having a stable relationship at all... I feel like I'm not even close to reaching such a point in life. It's easy to 'make kids', that's the easiest thing and anyone can do it. The real responsibility comes after - can you actually provide for a stable, happy life for your kids, growing up in a stable home with a healthy family? I wish I could, but I'm nowhere even close at the moment. So in my opinion having kids right now would be selfish, not the other way round!
Conception isn’t necessarily easy and in fact couples not being able to have kids can be detrimental to one’s emotion and the relationship itself. I agree with you though, if you’re unstable in your life it would be a bad idea to have kids, albeit it may also bring you a sense of accountability that steers you in the right direction….
@chrismacleod9326 Yes, you're right. I take that back. It's not 'the easiest thing in the world' for anyone and it's quite a tragedy when a couple can't conceive when they want to, whatever the reason may be. 😢
The only good thing really with having kids, is that you have more people beside you supporting you when you get old... But is it a guarantee that you'll have that? Coz lets face the truth, depending on how good or bad you are in parenting, the chances can be highly unlikely....
It's not about that - I'd rather kill myself than be a burden. It's about providing an opportunity for a wonder-filled existence to someone that wouldn't otherwise have an opportunity. Beyond that, it's as selfish as entering into a close relationship with anyone.
@@Hoganply I agree that your reason is much better than Karl's, ethically anyway. @@TheTruthKiwi True. It's like a tree falling in the forest; if they're not their to miss it, is it valuable? People may say Ricky Gervais here is being honest. But what he is doing is actually being smart. Not because of his crudeness but because of the joke he chose to say. "Giving reasons not to have kids" is probably one of the most perfect jokes because if your reasons are true and made sense, then his argument is valid. If he says something outrageous or ridiculous like he did here, then it makes him a(potential) bad parent and therefore his argument becomes valid again.

The same people I hear singing to high Heaven how much of a blessing and joy kids are, are the same people who complain about their struggles with having kids. Who is being selfish then? When you ask why people had children, it usually starts with "I want." Or the amazingly selfish reason of, "Who will take care of you when you're older?" There's no guarantee your kid will take care of you or even be able to provide care. I never understood how not having children makes someone selfish. I've always thought it to be a very smart and sound decision if you know they're not for you. I ask people whether they'd be willing to help me financially/mentally/physically/and emotionally support a child, since they're so insistent on me having one. They quickly change their tone or the subject. Why, I thought children were a blessing and the ultimate joy in being a woman? Surely you'd want to be around more, no?

I think that chemotherapy joke was actually making a broader point about how we gamble with someone else's life when we choose to have kids. "Luck of the draw" is exactly what it is. You can have the best genes in the world, it still doesn't eliminate the chances of creating a child that will suffer with some kind of disability (whether physical or mental) or condition. The difference with gambling on a football match, say, is you at least know the odds. With having children, you don't know the odds and furthermore you're gambling with someone else's money, literally their life savings. But forget all that because "I want kids".
spot on

I kind of disagree that it's giving existence to someone that wouldn't otherwise have an opportunity though because they literally do not exist before they are conceived so there's literally no one to miss the opportunities.
@@TheTruthKiwi True. It's like a tree falling in the forest; if they're not their to miss it, is it valuable? I'd say it is, since no one else, extant or otherwise, would have an existence precisely identical to that predicted by the hypothetical opportunity, making it unique. In any case, valuating opportunities is always a theoretical exercise, and existence is irrelevant to theoretical value.
Selfish reason to have children.
@@Hoganply And what about the droves who don't live wonder-filled lives, like the 1 in 78 who kill themselves? Worthy sacrifices for the ice-cream eaters?
SOO TRUE ON SO MANY LEVELS. AS SCARSTIC AND BOLD STATEMENTS GO, HIS IS BRILLIANT
That's exactly how i feel about having kids.. people think it's not normal.. but really the question is, why do have kids as oppose to why not have children.
41 without kids and honestly more people should follow this trend
42. No kids. Never had sex because I don't want to risk it. Your move.
teppolundgren Umm, yeah, that's why you've never had sex. It's not like vasectomies exist. Of course, if you're a woman, good luck getting your tubes tied because we can't be trusted to know what we want.

Can't be roasted if he doesn't exist.
Good on him. Socioeconomic status, health, stability, and choice should always be pre-requisites for parenting.
Absolutely wrong.
My father married my mother with only couch. Nothing else. He is a captain. Mother is a doctor. Very different cultures also. No one believes they are way that different.
Mom never had a proper wedding and says he only had a couch when they married. We're from turkey.
My dad is 1 kid of 10 siblings. Only one who studied. All rest is uneducated idiots.
30 years later,
We have more houses than we can sit as family of 5 people. Had awesome cars. The youngest one went to Italy to study piano and the price is too high but we found a way out.
In meantime, my dad also took care of my babysitter's kids (who had no father) and made them wealthy investors in marine as they OWN ships now.
See, it's possible.

I did the right thing: I saw my bank balance, remembered my own youth, heard young parents talk about parenthood, looked at the world in general, convened with my gf and decided "If I was supposed to be a dad, it would have happened already...there were plenty of occasions where it could have...let's take a hint and use all our money on US TWO enjoying our lives together with friends and our existing families."
No regrets.
Family is great but you don't need to start your own to know that
^^ This is the very definition of ‘Sour Grapes’
Families have convinced people for God knows how long that your parents will never regret having you even though they complain about you every day!
People may say Ricky Gervais here is being honest. But what he is doing is actually being smart. Not because of his crudeness but because of the joke he chose to say. "Giving reasons not to have kids" is probably one of the most perfect jokes because if your reasons are true and made sense, then his argument is valid. If he says something outrageous or ridiculous like he did here, then it makes him a(potential) bad parent and therefore his argument becomes valid again.
as a woman i constantly get this. this is perfect ty. lol
As if I had enough reasons to like this man,it also happens that he is a fellow anti natalist. What an awesome person!
I know right!! So good to have antinatalist representation on this level
He “gets away” with this because he’s so sincere, confident and honest. There’s not a scrap of self doubt or hesitation, so he sucks everyone into his frame
he is just so damn right.
Ricky presents a strong argument.
Was lucky enough to see this live. The atmosphere of the room was fantastic that night and I can honestly say it’s the funniest show I’ve ever witnessed
Ricky talks about his unborn son as if he or she was meant to be a Hollywood star. That can be the fourth reason why not to have children.
@Flatulence The Unending Another reason why I won't have kids.
I just.. I just adore him. Period.
This is so funny, but it seems to be honest and genuinely what he's thinking

@@justjenny8210 Ricky? in what sense
No, it is comedy...
"Pay for my chemotherapy" LMAO!!! That floored me!

@Brutal Honesty Of course it's awesome when you're narcissistic and what a little mini-me copy. If they were not like mom, I guess cards would change, little hypocrite, hm?
@Brutal Honesty Nobody cares. Classic mombie who writes a wall of text to romanticize the selfishness. If it helps you sleep better, go on, still hypocritical. Even more so when you project assumptions on a stranger to make you feel better because you risk breaking your bubble.
Want an assumption? I bet you believe in God and higher purposes too. Because if you didn't then maybe you would've realized no amount of whatever love excuses bringing a brand new soul to suffer in a fucked up world for your own selfish gratification.
@Brutal Honesty Awww, that's cute. Touched a soft spot? Was I right with God?
You know what you do in here? Projection. You didn't like the mirror I put in front of you so you blame me for what you do yourself. Hypocritical the 4th time. You answer on a child free comment, dismissing another person for a thoughtful life decision, praising yourself to the sky in a text wall and claiming you don't care. Sure. Nobody asked for a self-praise from you. Tell that in your sleep in Lala Land, but that and imaginary God won't save your kids from life's suffering, from traumas, death and all the shit you condemned them to.

@Paul Judkins You are having a child to feel better then.
@Yuki Yuki True, but don´t give us that bullshit of saying that having no kids is selfish. It all depends. If someone would like children but thinks they be bad parents it´s very brave not to. Enough people have kids and are not good at it.
Paul Judkins a friend of mine wanted to kill herself. She is married with 5 kids.
So true. Is like having kids is the epitome of your existence. God no!! And they look at you like you have the f pest. Like you are less than them. I love this dude he is so painfully honest and savage. I am 36 don't have kids don't plan to. And I am fine as it is thank you.
And then they give you the whole 'BuT yOu'LL be LonElY' speech as if the concept of having friends isnt viable 🤔
My husband and I like to make "when are you having kids" talk even more awkward by telling everyone we can't have kids naturally (true) and adoption is likely going to never financially be an option (also true). We love the awkward silence afterwards; because apparently "we don't want kids" isn't a good enough reason to not have them.
@@hambone4984 lol im so happy u found a partner who doesnt want kids or is ok with not having them. It would be nice if i could find one as well
It takes alot of sacrifice and commitment to be a good parent. Nurturing, caring for and raising children is not easy and definitely not for everyone. That said, becoming a mother has been the most amazing and rewarding experience of my life and I'm so grateful I was able to have my children. I love them more than life itself.
