From my point of view, an antagonist should be someone you have this natural desire to stop, either from hatred or justice. Dr. Maruki isn't an antagonist, he's a victim that you have to save.
He was sick of living his life under someone else’s thumb, even if it was a life of luxury, even if getting out meant his death... He would do it without hesitation to finally live life on his own terms.

Maruki's wish for a perfect reality is altered in an autonomous way, and Joker probably just wished for Akechi to be there not alive again, with Joker and be the person he was meant to be (an ally of Justice) and atone for his crimes, hence why he's there in Christmas. After Maruki's defeat, Akechi's just not there anymore, taking the advantage that he's dead, living an entirely new life.

I was dead set on breaking the fake reality from the start because it brought Akechi to my side, then when I heard what was going to happen to him made me start doubting me but then Akechi pulled me back up on my decision.. Akechi is supposed to be hated but damn if I can't, I love his character and I wish things could've been different for him.
I'm still on the fence. Obviously the route without the powerful overlord is the correct one, but the fake one isn't bad. I view it that the MC chose the realities of the party members. They were living their own perfect lives, but Joker forced his views on all of them, which caused their fake reality to break. Joker decided that their lives were wrong, rather than letting them decide on their own. It was impossible for them to do so on their own, but still... It's also worth mentioning that, in the new reality, Okumara, Wakaba, and Makoto's dad were all still alive. Choosing the true ending kills them all again. Something to think about.

I love how the blind idiot god is his first persona, but when he combines it with the guiding torch it becomes the wisest creature (Adom Kadmon is basically the embodiment of wisdom.)
Maruki is super fucking genuine and considerate. He could force them to accept it or wipe them out, but he gently talks with them for a month, promises compromises, and meets them for a fair fight, no dirty moves. Perhaps he questioned his own justice, and saw truth in the Thieves’ words.
Pain and suffering are parts of life. Removing them means that you aren't truly living. The pain of loss is what helps us move on. It may be horrible, but it isn't something we can run from. Running from our pain isn't happiness; it's cowardice. Maruki's reality is one where no one has to experience pain, suffering, or loss. In other words, it's one where everyone can run from their problems without consequences. It isn't a true life. Because of this, it is the false reality; the distorted, wrong reality.
The fact that Maruki has a Palace to begin with is an indicator that something was up. While I definitely understand Maruki's viewpoint... it doesn't work. Like you said, pain and suffering are a part of life. If we don't have those, we can't grow. In this reality, humanity is completely stagnant. No growth, only constantly running from one's problems.
It is easy to say that, but actually in deep everyone wants to live their lives in the best way without obstacles, just fun and happiness. The only thing is true about your statement is that bad things can bring more happiness than before. The perfect example is the main character: if his act in defending the woman disappear, he could not even be able to meet the other members of the phantom thieves.
Yeah but you also have to think about the people who are undergoing issues they can’t fix, such as the people living in poverty like the homeless or people in third world countries and also people with incurable diseases or injuries. Maruki’s reality gives hope and helps people in those unfair circumstances.

I lost my shit when Maruki revealed that his Persona is called Azzathoth. I don't know much about Lovecraftian monsters, but I do know is that Azzathoth is mind-breakingly horrifying. It really reinforces the terrifying power of Maruki's ability. EDIT: I'm just now finding out that the Shadow he first summons to hold you off is Hastur. Seriously, this guy is able summon the King in Yellow just like that?!

That's the whole point. The world isn't black and white. It's not just "good guy" and "bad guy". There's no "absolute" morally right choice. Our reality is full of pain. Sometimes, that pain can help us grow. Other times, it might just put us down and down with little to no way out. Maruki's reality is one where we can all be happy...but it's also a possibility that human growth might stagnate because of that.

Man this dude really blurred the lines of good and bad, with all the other bosses they were all black & white but I really considered Marukis offer when I got this far in the game
calvin This is something I don’t see talked enough about when talking about Maruki’s reality, the fact that he’s stripping away people’s free will for what HE thinks is they’re happiness. He takes away any agency from people to achieve they’re dreams or live they’re life according to what they want. Akechi actually hits the nail quite well as to what I think of that false reality, albeit to a less gung-ho extent, since I truly sympathize with what Maruki wants, and how he does have good intention. But stripping away people’s free will like he does is to take away people’s humanity, without free will, we become nothing more than puppets for another’s whims. And I hold mine and others free will in the highest regard. Not only that, but a man with that much power over people’s lives and reality, is something that could go terribly wrong very quickly. Humans are flawed, Maruki most definitely is no exception. Power corrupts, Absolute power corrupts absolutely. There’s a very genuine possibility that one day in that reality Maruki might end up getting bored for whatever reason and with all that power change reality again into something where he reigns supreme with everyone as obedient slaves to his whims and at that point he would be so powerful that NOTHING would be able to stop him. That wasn’t something I’d be willing to gamble either. Which in the end while a sad turn of events and still very sad to have to stop, it made it easy for me to make the decision to stop Maruki. He has a very noble goal but an abhorrent manner of trying to achieve it.

This was the best part of Royal as in freaking amazing. Maruki is a great villain if you can even call him that. Also, for stupid reasons y named Joker, Peter Parker in my playthrough and the final battle reminded me of the ending of spider-man ps4...

Even though he was an antagonists i couldn't hate Dr Markui he genuinely wanted to take away peoples pain and wanted everyone to not suffer no more he wanted people to stop going through pain but even though his heart was in the right place it wasn't his place to decide peoples paths he was very misguided
For some reason the last part of the fight reminds me a lot of the final phase of Liquid Ocelot in Metal Gear Solid Guns of the Patriots with just throwing punches like old mans.
If there will ever be an P4Arena style fighting game that includes Persona 5 characters in the future, Joker better have the whole "shooting enemy in the face" as an ultimate or an ultimate finisher. It's like his signature move at this point.

Dear God, don't remind me about Okumura. It's the only boss in the game I willingly used DLC Personas against (I never use the DLC Personas as they're broken af)
Except that Maruki is far more tolerable than Okumura's fight by a long stretch. Maruki's fight isn't spectacular by any means for sure, but Okumura's bots being able to flee after you worked so hard to reduce their billion health pool down is extremely frustrating. Almost rage quit a few times losing to that fight.
You have to be smart with Okumura’s boss fight. I used Magatama, baton passes, concentrate and resistance break and beat it on hard mode with 13 minutes to spare

After watching this ending, I can say that this is a perfect Chaos ending. Snt IV A had a great chaos ending in terms of lore P5 Royal has a great chaos ending in terms of what Chaos represents in Smt
I think what makes Maruki such a great antagonist is how human he is. He suffered so deeply losing the love of his life that he dedicated himself to healing the world of its troubles so no one would else have to suffer. It’s a nautral trauma response to do everything to avoid feeling that way after a tragedy like that, it’s so much easier to just remove those thoughts from your mind and suppress them. But, like it or not, they’ll come forward again one way or another, and they certainly did. Maruki isn’t inherently a villain or a hero, he’s just hurt

You know how every proper villain considers themselves to be the hero of their own story? One type of good villain is when they are the hero of _your_ story as well.
To be honest if I was in this situation I don't think I could say no. It would just be so goddamn hard. My best friend no longer went through the things that made them suffer, even one of them no longer have to die. I would succumb to the dreams and be lost to the fake reality. I know this makes me sound like a coward but I just had to share my thoguhts.
The only problem I have with the fight is that his third phase isn't really a fight so much as an endurance round. If we actually got to fight the empowered Adam Kadmon instead of just tanking his attacks every other turn until the game allowed you to win, it would probably have been my favorite final boss in the series.
@@catalyst539 To be even more specific, the OP meant the Adam Cadmon phase where Adam is in control of the body (aka when its lights are red instead of blue/cyan) which is just an Endurance fight instead of an all out Boss battle.

I liked everything about the third semester, but I don’t like what happened to maruki in the end, a cab driver, really? He could’ve continued helping people as a therapist.
Maybe he no longer felt qualified to be a therapist after this? He did kinda suggest the best thing was for Sumire to run from her problems, which is something a therapist shouldn’t really suggest.
Cab driver seems perfect to me. Shows how he’s humbled himself from trying to become a god to being a simple driver. As a taxi driver he will see all sorts of people and be able to help them the same way he helped people as he did as a councillor- by talking and listening.
I mean he does need a break from other people’s problems... Overworking himself isn’t good for him so I hope as a taxi driver he’s feeling not as stressed as a therapist, He deserves relief and time away from work, don’t you think?

I really hate how almost everyone blocks during his attack position, but it doesn't actually 1-shot you if you don't guard. Also, If you attack during it you can actually deal damage to as a hint to his attack position being his weakness. It's probably possible to defeat Adam Kadmon before the cut-scene even begins.
Yeah that is stupid a bit but basing it on the other boss fights it can be understandable a bit plus no you can't had max stats, charge, attack up, debilitate on him, even had (I believe it's) Futsunishi who can triple charge/focus and barely was making a dent, mind you you do a lot of damage but it looks as though the devs gave him much higher health. Basically what I'm saying is the cutscene is the only way to beat that one, I only went through it twice so don't take to much from just one person (me).
@@KingMufasa_8 you've gotta be a little slow. It's a minimum 200 damage per character. Just role with Ann, Makoto, and either Ryuji or Akechi and you'll be doing a lot of damage, and staying alive.
Azathoth is the best Persona to fit Maruki. Azathoth is referred to as the Blind Idiot God, and while powerful, he's a madman, and doesn't realize that his actions have consequences. Should Maruki have succeeded, eventually his psyche would have fallen apart from stress, and the world would have been torn to shreds. Such is the consequence of playing God.

I accepted his reality the first time I entered his palace and he offered it. Then after seeing the credits roll, I loaded back and cleared his palace. When he asked me to accept this last time before giving him the calling card, I accepted again, and watched the same ending. I fought with him and got the true ending just to see the content, but my go to ending is actually Maruki's reality. Even Lavenza says after the deadline when the two realities mix together, nobody will know the difference. So why not just be happy instead? I support Maruki all the way.
Because that wouldn't be life. Without the pain and the loses, what meaning is left for happiness and wins? And in what the Phantom Thieves friendship would be built on? The pain they go though was what bring them together and forged they bonds. In Maruki's new reality, they would be together but they friendship hollow.

Man this dude really blurred the lines of good and bad, with all the other bosses they were all black & white but I really considered Marukis offer when I got this far in the game
calvin This is something I don’t see talked enough about when talking about Maruki’s reality, the fact that he’s stripping away people’s free will for what HE thinks is they’re happiness. He takes away any agency from people to achieve they’re dreams or live they’re life according to what they want.
Akechi actually hits the nail quite well as to what I think of that false reality, albeit to a less gung-ho extent, since I truly sympathize with what Maruki wants, and how he does have good intention.
But stripping away people’s free will like he does is to take away people’s humanity, without free will, we become nothing more than puppets for another’s whims. And I hold mine and others free will in the highest regard.
Not only that, but a man with that much power over people’s lives and reality, is something that could go terribly wrong very quickly. Humans are flawed, Maruki most definitely is no exception. Power corrupts, Absolute power corrupts absolutely. There’s a very genuine possibility that one day in that reality Maruki might end up getting bored for whatever reason and with all that power change reality again into something where he reigns supreme with everyone as obedient slaves to his whims and at that point he would be so powerful that NOTHING would be able to stop him. That wasn’t something I’d be willing to gamble either.
Which in the end while a sad turn of events and still very sad to have to stop, it made it easy for me to make the decision to stop Maruki. He has a very noble goal but an abhorrent manner of trying to achieve it.

He can't rob people of something they couldn't prove they had, and a reality where everyone is happy is worth that cost.

The theme that plays during the final fight is called “Throw your Mask Away”, very fitting
And also look at the damage in every punch: maruki is doing more damage, because he is still not giving up, while the mc is enduring this fight against someone he respects...

This was the best part of Royal as in freaking amazing. Maruki is a great villain if you can even call him that. Also, for stupid reasons y named Joker, Peter Parker in my playthrough and the final battle reminded me of the ending of spider-man ps4...

Even though he was an antagonists i couldn't hate Dr Markui he genuinely wanted to take away peoples pain and wanted everyone to not suffer no more he wanted people to stop going through pain but even though his heart was in the right place it wasn't his place to decide peoples paths he was very misguided

For some reason the last part of the fight reminds me a lot of the final phase of Liquid Ocelot in Metal Gear Solid Guns of the Patriots with just throwing punches like old mans.
It even has Maruki spasming and keeling over from FOXDIE.

If there will ever be an P4Arena style fighting game that includes Persona 5 characters in the future, Joker better have the whole "shooting enemy in the face" as an ultimate or an ultimate finisher. It's like his signature move at this point.

Yeah, there's apparently a theory running around that Maruki's persona isn't actually a persona but a shadow that he uses some sort of cognitive control over. It makes some sense, until you get to the point of Azathoth literally evolving into Adam Kadmon in the middle of the boss fight.

Dear God, don't remind me about Okumura. It's the only boss in the game I willingly used DLC Personas against (I never use the DLC Personas as they're broken af)
Except that Maruki is far more tolerable than Okumura's fight by a long stretch. Maruki's fight isn't spectacular by any means for sure, but Okumura's bots being able to flee after you worked so hard to reduce their billion health pool down is extremely frustrating. Almost rage quit a few times losing to that fight.

You have to be smart with Okumura’s boss fight. I used Magatama, baton passes, concentrate and resistance break and beat it on hard mode with 13 minutes to spare

I think what makes Maruki such a great antagonist is how human he is. He suffered so deeply losing the love of his life that he dedicated himself to healing the world of its troubles so no one would else have to suffer. It’s a nautral trauma response to do everything to avoid feeling that way after a tragedy like that, it’s so much easier to just remove those thoughts from your mind and suppress them. But, like it or not, they’ll come forward again one way or another, and they certainly did.
Maruki isn’t inherently a villain or a hero, he’s just hurt

You know how every proper villain considers themselves to be the hero of their own story? One type of good villain is when they are the hero of _your_ story as well.
To be honest if I was in this situation I don't think I could say no. It would just be so goddamn hard. My best friend no longer went through the things that made them suffer, even one of them no longer have to die. I would succumb to the dreams and be lost to the fake reality. I know this makes me sound like a coward but I just had to share my thoguhts.

The only problem I have with the fight is that his third phase isn't really a fight so much as an endurance round. If we actually got to fight the empowered Adam Kadmon instead of just tanking his attacks every other turn until the game allowed you to win, it would probably have been my favorite final boss in the series.

@@catalyst539 To be even more specific, the OP meant the Adam Cadmon phase where Adam is in control of the body (aka when its lights are red instead of blue/cyan) which is just an Endurance fight instead of an all out Boss battle.

I liked everything about the third semester, but I don’t like what happened to maruki in the end, a cab driver, really? He could’ve continued helping people as a therapist.
Maybe he no longer felt qualified to be a therapist after this? He did kinda suggest the best thing was for Sumire to run from her problems, which is something a therapist shouldn’t really suggest.
Cab driver seems perfect to me. Shows how he’s humbled himself from trying to become a god to being a simple driver. As a taxi driver he will see all sorts of people and be able to help them the same way he helped people as he did as a councillor- by talking and listening.
Danchamp07 he’s getting them where they need to go and not where he thinks they should go. Very humble of him indeed.
I mean he does need a break from other people’s problems...

Well...no commedy group is complete without the sane man...and they tend to be the most comical due off how they try to handle the absurdities.
Imagine at 1:04:29 you see a shadow of satanael with his giant ass gun behind joker, that would've been awesome but i guess not in this reality.
I really hate how almost everyone blocks during his attack position, but it doesn't actually 1-shot you if you don't guard. Also, If you attack during it you can actually deal damage to as a hint to his attack position being his weakness. It's probably possible to defeat Adam Kadmon before the cut-scene even begins.
Yeah that is stupid a bit but basing it on the other boss fights it can be understandable a bit plus no you can't had max stats, charge, attack up, debilitate on him, even had (I believe it's) Futsunishi who can triple charge/focus and barely was making a dent, mind you you do a lot of damage but it looks as though the devs gave him much higher health. Basically what I'm saying is the cutscene is the only way to beat that one, I only went through it twice so don't take to much from just one person (me).

@@KingMufasa_8 you've gotta be a little slow. It's a minimum 200 damage per character. Just role with Ann, Makoto, and either Ryuji or Akechi and you'll be doing a lot of damage, and staying alive.

Azathoth is the best Persona to fit Maruki. Azathoth is referred to as the Blind Idiot God, and while powerful, he's a madman, and doesn't realize that his actions have consequences. Should Maruki have succeeded, eventually his psyche would have fallen apart from stress, and the world would have been torn to shreds. Such is the consequence of playing God.

I accepted his reality the first time I entered his palace and he offered it. Then after seeing the credits roll, I loaded back and cleared his palace. When he asked me to accept this last time before giving him the calling card, I accepted again, and watched the same ending. I fought with him and got the true ending just to see the content, but my go to ending is actually Maruki's reality. Even Lavenza says after the deadline when the two realities mix together, nobody will know the difference. So why not just be happy instead? I support Maruki all the way.
Because that wouldn't be life. Without the pain and the loses, what meaning is left for happiness and wins? And in what the Phantom Thieves friendship would be built on? The pain they go though was what bring them together and forged they bonds. In Maruki's new reality, they would be together but they friendship hollow.
