Assuming even Akechi's plan succeeded and Joker died, I think Sae would have noticed something was amiss. For a high school detective prince, Akechi really doesn't know the meaning of subtlety 16:15 So they let some High school kid interrogate a notorious murderer without any kind of supervision, and then a few hours later he "killed himself."
Not really it just means beating them. It would be more sus if he didnt say that as all the law would want to make the leader give them names no matter what and sae is corrupt as shown in the casino anyway
@@RedLotusVenerable More sus? Then a few hours later, he managed to "kill himself"? Especially since Prison guards, unless escorting, on a watch tower, or off duty aren't allowed to carry firearms. You mean to tell me a 16 year old (skinny one at that) managed to overpower a grown man (he would obviously be on guard against him anyway) so that he managed to take his gun and kill him with it?

The reason this is such a masterpiece is HOW they found out akechi was abit strange. The pancake remark Il the game explains it, but the fact that they just play it off as "haha funny meme line" is so perfect, it doesnt hit you that THATS whats off until this point Then the fact that after joker's "death" ryuji just smirks as if pleased, because he and ALL the thieves know that their gambit worked. And finally the scrne with our trickster just sitting there, smirking like a dumbass because he outsmarted akechi at every oppertunity is just... Perfect Best twist in a persona game ever imho
Now you know the real reason why pancake is associated with Akechi as a meme. Nobody can tell you why up to this point because it's spoilers. But it's great that the players are being rewarded should they notice this on the scene if they pay close enough attention ^^
i noticed this on my first play through and was so confused how no characters noticed. i was so happy to be wrong. this is probably one of the best stories i’ve experienced in games (closely followed by god of war ragnarok)
His persona is the great gentleman thief, and after reading some of the Arsené Lupin stories this is something he would have done in this situation! Awesome way to really show Joker’s cleverness
This part was so well told, going in, we all knew Akechi bad. What we didn't know was if the Phantom Thiefs knew and how would they outsmart him even if they did. I had totally forgotten the pancake scene earlier and honestly, Futaba being that bold to install an app on Akechi phone infront of him was beyond what I thought you could do.
Akechi disliked this cause he got duped. Actually in retrospect, he should have known something was off when Joker didn't fight back, or attempt to save himself.
He doesnt do that when you actually die either. If you fail to meet the deadline it cuts to a scene of joker getting shot in the head but not the fake one. Thats one of the reasons he was filled with drugs and beaten as akechi works for shido who ahs all of those officers in his pocket
@@RedLotusVenerable yeah that makes more sense actually. Know what it's like to have enough drugs in your system to fill out a pharmacy. It's not pleasant.
Not true. The bad endings (if you sell out your friends, or fail to meet deadline), they play out the same way... except you really die. Drugs are strong :(
Remember kids, if you ever play a persona game never ever trust a detective that starts with an "A" and ends with an "I". (especially if they are a male)
Those people on the Phan site are painfully accurate to real social media trolls. "High School age criminal kills himself in custody" Some Fucking guy: "What a sore loser"
So the plan was basically this: Get Sae to show Akechi the smartphone which causes him to unwittingly enter Sae's metaverse. Since Sae had just seen Joker in the interrogation room, her cognition would reflect that, leading to Akechi unknowingly killing the fake Joker and sparing the real one. While it's a good plan on the surface, the jig would have been up if: 1. Akechi tried to call Shido before exiting the metaverse. The call would not have gone through since there's no signals there. 2. Joker's shadow disintegrated immediately after being killed in front of Akechi's eyes. I seriously don't know why it didn't. 3. Anyone bothered to check the body. (I understand everyone involved was in Shido's pocket, but seriously, you're telling me not a single person bothered to check the body? Nobody wanted the confirmation? Hell, nobody was even curious?)
For your second point, the guard's dead body only disappear after sae told him to leave in the real world, i think sae returned to the room the same time akechi left but they are in different world ( based on the conversation about "meet mid-assassionation" )
Thing is that it was so obvious that Akechi was going to be the traitor and if you've played Persona 4 Golden and it also had an optional social link where it turned out that they were the murderer. So people had him pegged before the original game was even out. And I believe that's what Atlus was counting on, that was never the twist but rather that characters also knew that right from the start
@@backtoklondike also unlike persona 4, this game isn’t a mystery with themes about the truth, so akechi being a traitor isn’t of thematic significance. Like you said, the real twist is joker faking his death.
@@backtoklondike agree 100%. I remember people complaining about how big of a let down it was that akechi was the killer when the devs obviously wouldn't make it that simple without a reason. It was meant to be shocking in persona 4 but with 5 I wasn't at ALL expecting how joker with fake his death and how well the thieves set it up, especially since they didn't do the best job at keeping their identities a secret (looking at ryuji even though I love him lol). I like the joker twist a lot
@@jokingbanana1042 For me a big part of the twist was also the extent of Akechi's intentions. Before this chapter people know he is going to betray them, but they believe he is doing this because he is a detective and wants to catch the phantom thieves because he believes they are criminals, that his intentions are moral. Players at that point also don't believe he is black mask and that is someone else. At least that's how it was for me. However it's revealed that his entire personality is fake. He isn't a detective at all, he's a psychopath, he is black mask and behind the mental shut downs etc. and his true intentions are selfish, he wants revenge on his father. That was a shock to me, I really thought he really believed the phantom thieves were bad and he was doing what he does for moral justice, but everything was a facade. I thought he was a decent person, but once he walks into the room and points a gun at you, I realised "oh he is far more dangerous then I anticipated" and there is more to this then I had realised Akechi is such an interesting character to me, especially with the royal content. The contrast of "good boy" akechi and "everyday akechi" is so striking and shows how manipulative he is. He's complex as well, he's a psychopath, he has no empathy . However I also don't think he is evil, He is selfish but at no point does he try to harm others apart from trying to reach his goal of revenge on shido, he doesn't care about controlling others, power, or anything like that, he isn't like any of the other antagonists in this regard.
I feel bad for the people that already figure out all the details behind Akechi's treacherous motives and then the game basically insults your intelligence
I pieced together early that it was Akechi when I saw the killer was left-handed and some other hints. It kinda did feel like "no moron left behind" with the explanations. That and Kasumi's reveal being explained 3 times one after another.
A bit of an "oops", probably on the developer side at 42:55 Original persona 5 showed the image of Futaba with the gang outside of Sai's palace during that part. Here they show the bedroom with no Akechi to take the phone from...oops.
(13:41) *Sae:* I can’t believe this. I felt like such an idiot now not realizing that it wasn’t you who was the culprit. The true culprit is him. Isn’t it?
To the arguments saying Akechi being the traitor is super obvious because of [reasons]: 1. It's not that obvious if you've never even played the other Persona games, let alone P4 2. It's also not that obvious if you're not someone who typically watches a lot of anime and can recognize anime tropes from a mile away 3. Even if it was super obvious that Akechi was the traitor, him being the true culprit isn't because the game throws a g**damn red herring at you by making the true culprit's costume and Akechi's COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. Which isn't even explained until like two more hours into the game 4. The one clue that the game DOES give you is played off so casually, it just makes it look like it's just a minor plot hole that gets buried away with the other 70+ hours of story before it actually becomes relevant. The first time I watched that scene, I didn't even realize only Morgana said "pancakes", because I thought I also heard it from Ann and Ryuji. That kind of Mandela shit happens because the game deliberately makes the whole scene rather unremarkable and not even worthy of the player's attention That being said, that's to say I didn't have suspicions of my own though. Because of the fact that Akechi was really the only one who even "saw" the true culprit at the scene of Shadow Okumura's murder, it was virtually impossible for anyone else to verify his story, so he could literally make up any story he wanted. Added to the fact that, even though we saw him near the Phantom Thieves vicinity as they went into Okumura's palace for the first time, the game doesn't immediately bring it up like it did with Ann back when she was accidentally pulled into Kamoshidas castle for the first time. So I still found it odd that the game would just NOT show us Akechi following the Phantom Thieves the whole time they were in Okumura's Palace.
Eh not obvious but I was kinda suspecting he would be evil just because of they way he talked and how much he was focused on (I don’t watch anime but I can just tell)
i thought he was suspicious back when everyone was calling the thieves murderers after the whole Okumura incident, cause he didn't just shit on them and say they were, but when he showed the picture of the "real" picture of the guy who killed okumura, i was starting to change my mind, cause even though he was present when we went into the palace, i didn't think he literally would take a picture of himself + the different costume things
@@goncalves2724 It was obvious. Everything that led to him joining the group was too convenient for him. His sudden change from not supporting the phantom thieves on television to not condemning them when the masses were against them was a lure for the phantom thieves to go to him. His motives for joining were also suspicuous, saying that he knows who the true culprit was and was just as experienced as the group when he first joined them in their fights in the metaverse.
That’s what I said. You can see that he’s still on the bottom floor based on the elevator button. Either the devs overlooked this...or something else was going on.
Actually, that hallway is where both Sae and Akechi entered the metaverse. However, you need to go back to where you enter the metaverse in order to exit it. Both Sae and Akechi entered it at the same time, but they went in different directions. So when Akechi was walking back to the hallway, he had left the metaverse and he's back to the real world, while Sae is still in the metaverse. Then Akechi walked into the elavator and called Shido If you look back at 23:16, you can see the distortion once again when Sae eventually walked back to the same hallway. That is the moment Sae left the metaverse, and she was talking to the real guard and the real MC.@@CJluvsMJ27
The music change in the interrogation scene is genius. The way it uses that track throughout the game builds it to when you hear it in this moment and you know shit is about to go down!
What would've made this scene even better imo is all the phantom thieves (except Joker) met up somewhere with looks of despair and devastation, they look at one another, they smirk and all say, "we got em"
Aight hear me out for a sec. Akechi shot Joker in mementos, right? Now what if Joker has a persona that Rpl gunfire? Akechi would've shot himself lmao😭🤚🏻
I don't know if that's all it takes. Didn't Sae enter the metaverse during the interrogation? Maybe I'm remembering it wrong but I thought she entered in the same place that akechi did
@@MC-ns8gb She did, but she never heard Morgana talk, so to her, he's still just a good ol' cat. And they even think of this same strategy in Strikers, when they get Zenkichi (I know, he was a Persona user, but they didn't know at that moment, and his Persona wasn't awakened yet) into Alice's jail so he can see it and hear Morgana's voice. So it is truly a mystery why they didn't get Sojiro and Sae to the entrance of Mementos and then back out once they heard Morgana.
Well it was a crazy plan that had so many possible ways it could have got messed up. So to feel a bit shocked and relieved it all worked the way they planned. Ryuji always goes all in so him ignoring any doubts makes sense for his character.

I was thinking of Arsené Lupin Vs Sherlock Holmes. Joker’s initial persona is based off of the great gentleman thief and this is exactly something Arsené Lupin would do if he had access to the metaverse
So you're telling me all these high school kids who are always hanging out in public in every scene of the crime who all happen to have connections to every case and then act shocked when NPCs find out it's them managed to pull off that kind of master plan?... Also, the fact that Akechi has been telegraphed for about 30 hours of the game to be super sketch was supposed to be a surprise?... Nah but for real this is game is pretty dope and the soundtrack is tits so I'll let all the aforementioned slide this time lol
As for your first point yea it does seem far fetched but I toss things like that to gaming logic lol. As for Akechi for myself I could see he had ultierior motives and was most likely involved in everything but I didn’t think that on offhand comment by him about pancakes was gonna lead to him getting outsmarted lol. I’d love to know what the writers in the room were thinking when planning how the story for this game cause as silly and crazy as the plot can be this whole situation being based on a comment like that creating a chain of events that leads to an antagonists downfall cause of a breakfast food sounds so silly but works so damn well for this game in my opinion. Lol
his slow walking, and then how it looked like he effortlessly cocked the gun outta experience. damn coming back to this video to check out the higher quality 3d animation for akechi killing the guard...it was so smooth and to me looked even better than persona awakenings cus i'm a simp lol (except yusuke that awakening was sick)
After reviewing this scene a couple of times, I think he didn't cock the gun, I think he put the Muffler on, because Akechi took it off when he placed it on Joker's hand. The gun was already cocked and loaded, but he needed to make sure no one else heard it. Pretty smart, but he got outsmarted in the end.
Me: I had a feeling you were the the one responsible behind the mental shutdowns Akechi. Reina: I had the same feeling too. Seliph: The same goes for me too.
18:10 lol Seems like the guard had a silenced weapon fetish that he had permission to have one. Good thing he managed to get one otherwise he would be stuck with a revolver that is issued to police, huh
I still find it so funny that society has no idea how silencers actually work, and even Japan is using them the movie way of eliminating all the sound of the gunshot, when it's more just muffles it a bit so your ears don't explode. Not an issue with the game, I just think it's funny that Hollywood's influence on that front has reached Japan as well.
@@JerryMcB3rry Guns, in general, aren't well understood by many people either, sooo it could be the influence of Hollywood, but it could also be a typical "fiction does not completely portray something like the real deal" type situation. As guns aren't so easy to come by in Japan, they may have chosen to go this route on purpose(?).
The fact that I could've saw this scene and realised the whole plan angers me because my old PS3 broke. Luckily I'd managed to grab the Royal-Physical version of the game. Buuuut that still doesn't change the fact I was a complete FOOL to not have realised Akechi understood Morgana because Mona was the ONLY one who mentioned Pancakes and for anyone who's actually played the game, is aware of how his voice works. Just thought of something… Futaba says to Sae and Sojiro that to hear Morgana, you have to hear him in the metaverse, but then Ann and Ryuji says that Akechi must’ve heard Morgana with the whole pancake line, but then how did Akechi hear Morgana, since he has to hear him in the metaverse before entering Madarames Palace.
It's possible that he was hiding in places that even the PT's couldn't see, so that he could have any opportunity to try and frame the PT's. Thing is, all of the palace's rulers always left as soon as they were defeated. Kamoshida shadow returned to his real self after ann defeated him. Madarame the same thing. Kaneshiro and Futaba's palace, although this one was a special one, considering the fact that in the previous ones, the targets were big ones. Futaba wasn't exactly an big one, considering she was a shut-in, so he never knew she even existed. Although. That one is also a bit hazy, because of her relationship she had with wakaba sakura, who was researching cognitive psience or whatever it was. Which akechi did killed her because her research was extremely important, and there were people who would want to get their hands on it, such as shido. It could be possible that akechi might have stumbled upon papers and documentation that reveals that her daughter exists, but he didn't worried about it, because im going to place a bet here that akechi forged an fake suicide note, and then gave to the men in black, so that she couldn't interfere with his works, and possibly, getting herself killed by herself in the process. Two birds with one stone. Maybe that is why he didn't cared about it on this one. Okumura one though was different. After changing futaba's heart, you go to hawaii alongside some of your confidants. (sadly mishima goes as well and you don't have a say on the matter) From there, mishima says to you that recently the phan-site has been getting countless requests about this fast food joint, which has this CEO whose treating it's employees badly. These requests obviously come from a bot, which i have no doubt that it's coming from our lovely friend mr. Pancake boi himself. :p So after you return from your summer holidays, you go to his palace while you ignore most of the arc, considering the fact that -Okumura palace is absolute shit- most of the arc is the cat throwing temper tantrums at you because of ryuji. Defeat him and then he dissappears and all good right? Nope. This time however, he didn't dissappeared. After the PT's left, akechi finally had the perfect opportunity to kill okumura's shadow and so he did. The palace was gone as usual, but now this time, not only the palace was destroyed, but so was okumura.
The exit point is the place you entered from. So as soon as he walked through the point of the hallway in which he entered the metaverse, he was back in the real world.
I know this a new reply to an old comment, but how would’ve Akechi understood Morgana at the point when he mentioned pancakes? I thought you had to be WITH Morgana in the Metaverse first to understand him, not just go into the Metaverse once?

*RANK 8*
Assuming even Akechi's plan succeeded and Joker died, I think Sae would have noticed something was amiss. For a high school detective prince, Akechi really doesn't know the meaning of subtlety 16:15
So they let some High school kid interrogate a notorious murderer without any kind of supervision, and then a few hours later he "killed himself."
Not really it just means beating them. It would be more sus if he didnt say that as all the law would want to make the leader give them names no matter what and sae is corrupt as shown in the casino anyway
@@RedLotusVenerable More sus? He's an underage boy with no supervision or escort who has no business down here waltzing into the cell of a notorious murderer (When Sae, a well respected Prosecutor had to fight tooth and nail to just get what an hour with Joker?)
Him saying essentially he expected things got violent even before anything even happened is fishy. Sae even mentioned the "other culprit" out of the blue.

The pancake remark
Il the game explains it, but the fact that they just play it off as "haha funny meme line" is so perfect, it doesnt hit you that THATS whats off until this point
Then the fact that after joker's "death" ryuji just smirks as if pleased, because he and ALL the thieves know that their gambit worked. And finally the scrne with our trickster just sitting there, smirking like a dumbass because he outsmarted akechi at every oppertunity is just...

Best twist in a persona game ever imho
I have to point out, they remember that detail for months... So, i guess Joker and Morgana remember him, even more when he approached

"High School age criminal kills himself in custody"

So the plan was basically this: Get Sae to show Akechi the smartphone which causes him to unwittingly enter Sae's metaverse. Since Sae had just seen Joker in the interrogation room, her cognition would reflect that, leading to Akechi unknowingly killing the fake Joker and sparing the real one.
While it's a good plan on the surface, the jig would have been up if:

Yes thats the best part XD
so the changed dialogue was just marketing... makes sense, but it would have also alluded to the fact that doing Akechi's Confidant is optional
I thought he was a decent person, but once he walks into the room and points a gun at you, I realised "oh he is far more dangerous then I anticipated" and there is more to this then I had realised
Akechi is such an interesting character to me, especially with the royal content.
@@backtoklondike its not optional in base persona 5 so your statement isnt true also every confidant/social link is optional
I feel bad for the people that already figure out all the details behind Akechi's treacherous motives and then the game basically insults your intelligence

@@Rapidfre After that, he never wants to hear anything about pancakes.
Akechi was undermined by the one thing he truly loved; pancakes.
To the arguments saying Akechi being the traitor is super obvious because of [reasons]:
1. It's not that obvious if you've never even played the other Persona games, let alone P4
2. It's also not that obvious if you're not someone who typically watches a lot of anime and can recognize anime tropes from a mile away
3. Even if it was super obvious that Akechi was the traitor, him being the true culprit isn't because the game throws a g**damn red herring at you by making the true culprit's costume and Akechi's COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. Which isn't even explained until like two more hours into the game
4. That kind of Mandela shit happens because the game deliberately makes the whole scene rather unremarkable and not even worthy of the player's attention
That being said, that's to say I didn't have suspicions of my own though. So I still found it odd that the game would just NOT show us Akechi following the Phantom Thieves the whole time they were in Okumura's Palace.
it was not obvious
Eh not obvious but I was kinda suspecting he would be evil just because of they way he talked and how much he was focused on (I don’t watch anime but I can just tell)
i thought he was suspicious back when everyone was calling the thieves murderers after the whole Okumura incident, cause he didn't just shit on them and say they were, but when he showed the picture of the "real" picture of the guy who killed okumura, i was starting to change my mind, cause even though he was present when we went into the palace, i didn't think he literally would take a picture of himself + the different costume things
I was suspicious the instant I saw his last name.
It's the same last name as the man who betrayed and killed Oda Nobunaga: Akechi Mitsuhide.
20:08 Akechi is making a call to the real Shido. How did he return from metaverse then? The exit should be upstairs where Akechi and Sae met.

Then Akechi walked into the elavator and called Shido

Futaba says to Sae and Sojiro that to hear Morgana, you have to hear him in the metaverse, but then Ann and Ryuji says that Akechi must’ve heard Morgana with the whole pancake line, but then how did Akechi hear Morgana, since he has to hear him in the metaverse before entering Madarames Palace.
Never explained, or implied.
So after you return from your summer holidays, you go to his palace while you ignore most of the arc, considering the fact that -Okumura palace is absolute shit- most of the arc is the cat throwing temper tantrums at you because of ryuji.

In that case, Goro was behind the team watching them so he would have seen Morgana then. He quickly flees before they see him. If not then I don’t know. Their plan was rather flawed to begin with.
@@SilverflameYoshi83 yeah he knew who the phantom thief’s were and spied on them
for some time.
Futaba must have been remotely controlling the meta nav on the phone
This had me fooled so royally I was screaming
imagine ruining all ur plans cause of PANCAKE😂😂😂
I got so scared cuz I thought I got the bad ending, and I almost screamed when I saw Ryuji smirk
My chest felt heavy AF during this entire section
It would’ve been easier to just slip sojiro and sae into the Metaverse so they could comprehend Morgana
Imagine if Yoshizawa joined the thieves, there would've been an interesting twist
*Spoilers*
Having taken the suspect information from investigations and stuff like school records, during the attempt to have Joker confess, Sae would've referred to her as Sumire Yoshizawa instead of Kasumi Yoshizawa. Unless he was really tripped up by the drug (which should've been wearing off), he would've had at least some suspicions.
That being said, why didn't Sae question parts of his testimony regarding Kasumi. If she investigated Shujin students that heavily, wouldn't she have known Kasumi was dead, or at least not attending Shujin?
Wasn’t it mentioned that people always called her Sumire but Maruki changes her cognition so she thinks they say Kasumi?
@@gwolft6996 That's only in Sumire's cognition. Before the third semester, any official documents of sumire such as her School records would still use her same name. The only exception was her ID that she purposefully swapped. The interrogation only involved joker (Who knew Sumire as Kasumi) and Sae (Who'd never met her and would only know her through Joker's testimonies and the school records used for cross checking)
@@Tosu2357 i assume she wouldn't believe him and would mistake sumire as kasumi do to the drugs but then again Sumire wasnn't really a part of the pantom thieves so in a sense she herself hase commited no crimes
I know I am late, but I think it's quite implied Joker NEVER tells Sae the names of his confidants during the interrogation. Only if you make the deal that leads to the bad ending. It's pretty obvious you weren't it that room with her for 80+ hours, just maybe half an hour? One maybe? That part of the game was just Joker remembering what happens, and he telling Sae just the important bits. He perhaps talked about his teammates by codename.
Although the idea of you just telling everything to Sae is quite hilarious. "So after a date with your Sister, I went with my doctor for a "Check up", if you Know what I mean. Oh, also I'm dating a reporter, my Teacher, a fortune teller and several other girls around my age, but we'll eventually catch up to that." "You sick bastard."
What if the cognitive guard's gun didn't have the right muzzle for akechi's silencer?
Nice Question lol
But i think akechi know the model gun, cause the guard just like shido minion too
“We got em…” changed my life forever i was not expecting this😭
Bad ending: No jokers dead!
This plot twist: Yayy he’s alive!
