if you think about it, the Phantom Thieves are the only ones actually making sure justice is being done. Sae's too busy with her obsession with success and Aketchi is just finding different ways to discredit the Phantom Thieves, if you want to do that, do some work of your own - not just find different flaws, because this is making the police force seem a lot worse there (Yes, I know they change later - but at that point anyway)
pretty sure that they would've, if the organisation was bigger - because, if you think about it - there aren't that many to get them to split up and go after a different thief, there are only You, Ryuji, Ann, Yusuke, Morgana, Makoto Futaba, Akechi (God he's annoying) and the other girl (forgot her name, but you come across her after Futaba). There'd have to be at least 30 if you were to disband them, 2 for each criminal doesn't really add up because they'd easily be outnumbered, whereas you would have been able to send 5 after each criminal if you had 30 members.
Literally any other sad moment in the game: "well that's depressing" Futaba looks like she's about to cry even for a second: "MY HEART CANT TAKE THIS!"
Sojiro is best dad. In the beginning, I hated him but as the game goes on, his character development was amazing. He went from one of my least favourites to one of my very favourites.
Well, he was always best dad. He always doted on Futaba, as evidenced by all the cellphone conversations you can overhear through the first half of the game. His attitude at first is to be expected when treating with a kid that's on probation and was basically kicked out by his own parents. He's giving you a place to live but that's all he's willing to risk for a person he doesn't yet know. Eventually you start to prove yourself a "good kid" and he meets your friends too so he starts to warm up to you, but I found the transition believable so I never held it against him for starting as a bit of a dick. In contrast P4's Doujima gave you a welcoming home yet the second he suspects you for anything he's on your ass like you're some crook he picked off the street.
LeonGun8 his initial attitude is still incorrect towards Akira, because he knows that he has not finished on probation for a classic youthful fuck, but for saved a woman from a rape.
LeonGun8 well it IS the complete opposite y'know. Sojiro always catches you as you come into leblanc and even sees when you try to read or study or even make coffee. Dojima is barely there at all and doesn'te even do housework. Sojiro doesn't know you and slowly learns to trust you. Dojima just knows you, period unless you go through his link. By then, I guess it's just duty vs family that has plagued him much like what he's left Nanako alone to do.
I think he's just in denial because he either doesn't know Akechi killed Wakaba for Shido in order to protect research that could expose him, or he knows and is just to guilt-ridden to admit it.
I love this scene... in a less brilliantly written game Sojiro would have never found out or he would have only confronted the MC about it, but it felt like what would happen with real people. It's the moment in which I went from liking the game a whole lot to loving it.
I'm less amazed by him founding out (that was something they did in Peron 4 with Doujima too) and more about him accepting and giving you his support after seeing the full picture. In Persona 4 all Doujima does is suspect you the entire game, leading you to a confrontation where he takes you in for questioning at a critical moment which leads to his own daughter (and the MC's cousin) getting kidnapped.
I've noticed now that futaba never got her heart stolen, but her change of heart was triggered by herself, and her acceptance of her shadow. That's how her palace was defeated, cause futaba was her own treasure...

I almost hated Futaba for having still kept that Phantom Card (as she should know better given how smart she is), but when she talked about how sentimental the card was to her and how much of an impact we had on her, I just sort of went back to loving her once more.
I mean, to be honest, if I was futaba I would have kept that calling card as well. It was basically the turning point in her life - she went to an almost-suicidal shut-in into a geeky soon-to-be schoolgirl with great friends, a loving father and a talking cat. :P
To be fair, from Sojiro's POV it is quite obvious that something happened to Futaba. For 2 years she stays as a shut-in and even the doctors can't help her. Then comes along you and the others and within the span of one month she is capable of going to the beach and going out. You'd have to be pretty stupid to miss that as her guardian.
6:05 Never hear anyone talking about this but the "what the hell" sojiro delivers is the best line in the game. Full of bewilderment, shame for not learning earlier, and pure anger at the world. It sells every emotion he's going through in just 3 words.
Honestly this scene is amazing, the voice actors did a phenomenal job here. Futaba and Sojiro’s back and forth was the most convincing parent/Kid argument I’ve ever experienced next to the real thing. Love this game so much
I think Japanese version of that scene was a lot better. You could really feel her(Futaba's) emotions. Well, I'm not saying English was bad, but... How should I put it, I went through some things in my life(child sexual abuse), that left me with all sorts of trauma, fears and depressions, also Im rather empathetic person, so I can pick up quite well how much someone is faking such emotions, with their voice or behavior, and I think Japanese voice actress acts a lot better here. It's just my personal opinion, though.
@@ransukomoon6439 JP Seiyuus tend to take their work a lot more seriously than their EN counterparts. It's probably because voice acting is big business in Japan, while it isn't to the same extent in the US. I've been spoiled with the quality of JP dubs so this English dub of Persona 5 is a bit lacking to me. JP will have the best experience IMO, especially if you understand some of the words. For example, you might get more nuance out of knowing that Mona refers to himself as "wagahai" Instead of "ore" or "boku". The former is more archaic than the latter. It's like "thou" is to "you". This little bit of context enhances his somewhat showy persona (heh, pun intended), as well as foreshadowing his association with the velvet room. That said, there are some Japanese games that are just better in English in my opinion. Mostly the ones that look realistic and/or are set in America and mostly involve Americans. Like Resident Evil and Hideo Kojima games. I also love the English dub of Xenoblade games for the sole reason that literally the entire cast is Bri'ish or otherwise Commonwealth. I mean, come on! Welsh catgirls!

You will see what I mean by "proportional" when you look at the difference between how Troy Baker gives a much better performance in a big budget game like The Last of Us than a lower budget game like Persona 4. Guess who had more money to pay him between Atlus USA and Naughty Dog?

Sojiro is probably one of my favorite father figures in games. He starts off at understandably bitter, helping you out of obligation. He slowly warms up to you even acknowledging your growth. Even early game where he acts like a hard ass comes from a place of expierence rather then being a jerk for the sake of it.
The raw emotion in this scene oozes with brilliant acting and natural dialogue. You can hear the anger and confusion in Sojiro, the panic and sadness in Futaba’s voice and you don’t need voice work to see Joker doing everything possible to keep a lid on the situation. It’s a crying shame there is no acting awards for video game scenes because these three absolutely knocked it out of the park.

Sojiro is one of my favorite characters. I love how he's concerned for both of them when he hears that they are actually Phantom Thieves. Not just Futaba.
To be fair, Dojima's circumstances were impossible. He was torn about how his nephew was so consistently suspicious, how was he EVER expected to figure out that his partner'd been touched by a god and rigged this whole scenario with magical shadow monsters and alternate TV dimensions? On top of the fact that the "Investigation Team" was just a little nickname for a squad of kids who hung out after school, whereas the Phantom Thieves were straight up famous criminals at this point. Kinda praising him for reaching the no-brainer conclusion compared to Dojima's tangled web that he STILL wasn't disclosed the full truth about, but sure, hooray P5.

6:21 Sojiro's anger and Futaba's pleading here had me weeping, having been through the whole game up to this point and Sojiro being one of the most cool and collected characters, seeing him raise his voice in anger makes breaks my heart, they do a fantastic job of making him feel like a proper father figure.
soooo...I just came back from the anime version of this scene and....*IT'S TERRIBLE.* In the anime, Sojiro simply went "Oh, you guys are Phantom Thieves? Cool, ok." Come on! In the game, this is a big deal! Not just for the player, but for Sojiro's character! He was shocked by the news! He was emotionally torn apart! He was angry for being lied to for months but also sympathetic to the Phantom Thieves, and especially Futaba!He was conflicted between his responsibility as Joker's and Futaba's guardian and his history to Wakaba and his sense of justice! He has to let the situation sink in and consider the possible dangers that his children are in!!! *THIS IS AN IMPORTANT SCENE!!* And it's absolutely disgusting for A1 pictures to just treat this scene like a footnote!!
The problem is the anime either gets scenes in the game much better or much worse. Others scenes (including any boss fight, any interaction with a shadow, and a few others) are just underwhelming in the anime. But it gets some other scenes really good (such as the first futaba interaction, the akechi fight, the final boss, etc.). The scenes in the game that got worse in the anime, as well as the rather shitty animation, is what makes it bad, but it’s good at portraying the events in the game more than 90% accurately, so overall I would recommend it if you already played the game. Also, I haven’t watched the entire dub but I heard it’s better so watch the dub
I just want to say that these scene gives me shivers for how sad this is was for both Futaba and Sojiro. It's a point of no return thing. Futaba's English VA did a great job handling a person in their mental breakdown state. Sojiro's English VA also shows a subtle hint of a guardian that tries his best to maintain composure when confronting this truth. I mean, the way he said "What the hell" is really like a parents who is at loss for words, not knowing what to do. I played this scene twice. English Audio and then Japanese Audio in NG+. The Japanese one is astounding as well. Futaba's voice is like she is on the verge of tears and shaking while Sojiro's voice is a combination of angry, worry, and trembling. It's very unlike the usual bad-ass Sojiro we heard in day to day. Both EN/JP dub has done incredible job delivering this scene with their own artistic interpretation.
IMO, for the EN dub, the climax point is at the "What the hell" scene. It really shows how much Sojiro is at loss because he genuinely cared for both of them, but he felt somewhat responsible for not realizing it soon. While for he JP dub, the climax point is when Sojiro said "Stop this nonsense! (Yamero!)". Because it was as if Sojiro tried to prevent both of them to delve too deep since he know how fearsome the foe is going to be, and he doesn't want to lose both of them this time after Wakaba's death.
Sojiro: this isn't some game your playing! Joker: actually, it is it's called persona 5, it came out in 2016, we go into the cognitive world to change people's hearts and we use personas to to fight the shadow version of that person's palace we are in

It was this scene that sealed the deal for me. I knew futaba was the best choice to go for. And sojiro's final rank up scene was icing on the cake. Screw the main guys family. To be fair, from Sojiro's POV it is quite obvious that something happened to Futaba. For 2 years she stays as a shut-in and even the doctors can't help her. Then comes along you and the others and within the span of one month she is capable of going to the beach and going out. You'd have to be pretty stupid to miss that as her guardian.

Honestly this scene is amazing, the voice actors did a phenomenal job here. Futaba and Sojiro’s back and forth was the most convincing parent/Kid argument I’ve ever experienced next to the real thing. Love this game so much
I think Japanese version of that scene was a lot better. You could really feel her(Futaba's) emotions. Well, I'm not saying English was bad, but... How should I put it, I went through some things in my life(child sexual abuse), that left me with all sorts of trauma, fears and depressions, also Im rather empathetic person, so I can pick up quite well how much someone is faking such emotions, with their voice or behavior, and I think Japanese voice actress acts a lot better here. It's just my personal opinion, though.
@@ransukomoon6439 JP Seiyuus tend to take their work a lot more seriously than their EN counterparts. It's probably because voice acting is big business in Japan, while it isn't to the same extent in the US. I've been spoiled with the quality of JP dubs so this English dub of Persona 5 is a bit lacking to me. JP will have the best experience IMO, especially if you understand some of the words. For example, you might get more nuance out of knowing that Mona refers to himself as "wagahai" Instead of "ore" or "boku". The former is more archaic than the latter. It's like "thou" is to "you". This little bit of context enhances his somewhat showy persona (heh, pun intended), as well as foreshadowing his association with the velvet room.
That said, there are some Japanese games that are just better in English in my opinion. Mostly the ones that look realistic and/or are set in America and mostly involve Americans. Like Resident Evil and Hideo Kojima games. I also love the English dub of Xenoblade games for the sole reason that literally the entire cast is Bri'ish or otherwise Commonwealth. I mean, come on! Welsh catgirls!

Also, no these VAs are not underpaid, they are paid exactly as much as their work is worth. It just so happens that EN Voice actors for JP games are paid less because the budget is lower, and therefore they produce a quality of voice acting proportional to the amount they were paid. They were the ones who accepted the contract, after all. They're entirely free not to. You will see what I mean by "proportional" when you look at the difference between how Troy Baker gives a much better performance in a big budget game like The Last of Us than a lower budget game like Persona 4. Guess who had more money to pay him between Atlus USA and Naughty Dog?

Sojiro is probably one of my favorite father figures in games. He starts off at understandably bitter, helping you out of obligation. He slowly warms up to you even acknowledging your growth. Even early game where he acts like a hard ass comes from a place of expierence rather then being a jerk for the sake of it.
The raw emotion in this scene oozes with brilliant acting and natural dialogue. You can hear the anger and confusion in Sojiro, the panic and sadness in Futaba’s voice and you don’t need voice work to see Joker doing everything possible to keep a lid on the situation. It’s a crying shame there is no acting awards for video game scenes because these three absolutely knocked it out of the park.

To be fair, Dojima's circumstances were impossible. He was torn about how his nephew was so consistently suspicious, how was he EVER expected to figure out that his partner'd been touched by a god and rigged this whole scenario with magical shadow monsters and alternate TV dimensions? On top of the fact that the "Investigation Team" was just a little nickname for a squad of kids who hung out after school, whereas the Phantom Thieves were straight up famous criminals at this point. Kinda praising him for reaching the no-brainer conclusion compared to Dojima's tangled web that he STILL wasn't disclosed the full truth about, but sure, hooray P5.

6:21 Sojiro's anger and Futaba's pleading here had me weeping, having been through the whole game up to this point and Sojiro being one of the most cool and collected characters, seeing him raise his voice in anger makes breaks my heart, they do a fantastic job of making him feel like a proper father figure.

soooo...I just came back from the anime version of this scene and....*IT'S TERRIBLE.* In the anime, Sojiro simply went "Oh, you guys are Phantom Thieves? Cool, ok."
Come on! In the game, this is a big deal! Not just for the player, but for Sojiro's character! He was shocked by the news! He was emotionally torn apart! He was angry for being lied to for months but also sympathetic to the Phantom Thieves, and especially Futaba!He was conflicted between his responsibility as Joker's and Futaba's guardian and his history to Wakaba and his sense of justice! He has to let the situation sink in and consider the possible dangers that his children are in!!! *THIS IS AN IMPORTANT SCENE!!*
And it's absolutely disgusting for A1 pictures to just treat this scene like a footnote!!
I liked it tho... It showed Sojiro's nice side, and showed he was *wayyy* smarter than he let on.

Yeah, the anime really sucked.
The problem is the anime either gets scenes in the game much better or much worse. Others scenes (including any boss fight, any interaction with a shadow, and a few others) are just underwhelming in the anime. But it gets some other scenes really good (such as the first futaba interaction, the akechi fight, the final boss, etc.). The scenes in the game that got worse in the anime, as well as the rather shitty animation, is what makes it bad, but it’s good at portraying the events in the game more than 90% accurately, so overall I would recommend it if you already played the game. Also, I haven’t watched the entire dub but I heard it’s better so watch the dub

I just want to say that these scene gives me shivers for how sad this is was for both Futaba and Sojiro. It's a point of no return thing. Futaba's English VA did a great job handling a person in their mental breakdown state. Sojiro's English VA also shows a subtle hint of a guardian that tries his best to maintain composure when confronting this truth. I mean, the way he said "What the hell" is really like a parents who is at loss for words, not knowing what to do.
I played this scene twice. English Audio and then Japanese Audio in NG+. The Japanese one is astounding as well. Futaba's voice is like she is on the verge of tears and shaking while Sojiro's voice is a combination of angry, worry, and trembling. It's very unlike the usual bad-ass Sojiro we heard in day to day. Both EN/JP dub has done incredible job delivering this scene with their own artistic interpretation.
IMO, for the EN dub, the climax point is at the "What the hell" scene. It really shows how much Sojiro is at loss because he genuinely cared for both of them, but he felt somewhat responsible for not realizing it soon.
While for he JP dub, the climax point is when Sojiro said "Stop this nonsense! (Yamero!)". Because it was as if Sojiro tried to prevent both of them to delve too deep since he know how fearsome the foe is going to be, and he doesn't want to lose both of them this time after Wakaba's death.

I don’t know why nobody is talking about the way Sojiro said “What the hell?” I know it’s small, but just the way you can hear the mixture of sadness, fear, confusion, anger, and worry in just three words is fucking amazing, major props to the voice actor.
It was this scene that sealed the deal for me. I knew futaba was the best choice to go for. And sojiro's final rank up scene was icing on the cake. Screw the main guys family. After the final scene, after the credits it should've shown them passing by his parents house and him flipping them off from out the sun roof. Am I right?

When I first started the game I knew Sojiro was gonna be that “I may seem like a ass but really I’m not” kind of character, I never hated him at all and loved his character as he’s such a good guy just trying to do right for Futaba.
It’s a bit awkward however that I’m dating his adopted daughter but even so those two people are honestly without a doubt the two I don’t want to see hurt 😤
