    I have owned both Civic and Corolla. Both cars are now with my kids. Civic drives and handles better, and the Corolla rides better and are more reliable, These comments are based on my 13 years ownership of both vehicles.

    Both are fantastic choices for the consumer. Both offer so many features for the price. I am really impressed with the Corolla this time around. I think Toyota have done a wonderful job updating this model. However when the new Civic drops I feel that I'll be leaning more on the new Civic when it comes to market. Whichever car the consumer chooses, they are getting great value in each one. You really can't go wrong with either vehicle. Good comparison 👏👍

      @Gandalf Stormcloud Thanks for that. I will definitely look into the GRMN. I've been put off Corollas in the past because they do lack any sportiness or oomph and are a bit bland. This could address that.

    Toyota all the way! Not crazy about the Civic hatch exterior especially when you add the rear wings in the faster models. I also can't justify paying extra for premium fuel either (I know you said it would take regular for less power). Thanks for the review.

      Same. Corolla hatch looks better and I love that it's a naturally aspirated engine for long term reliability. That back seat has gotten small though. I'd have to see how we'd fit with a rear facing child seat in the Corolla.

    I love the looks of both cars but ultimately chose the Civic hatchback for my latest purchase because of the way the car handles, the greater interior space, and my past experiences with two other Civics I have owned, which lasted a combined 385,000 miles with zero mechanical issues. This is my first turbo and I’m interested to see if it will be as durable as my other non-turbo Civics were.

    • @bunating
      @bunating 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, can you please advise if you've had any issues with your civic turbo hatchback? I was really close to buying a used 2018 civic hatch but got scared by the oil dilution issues and some other complaints people had with this model like A/C components prone to failure and cabin heating and defrosting issues in winter time. I wonder if the turbo is durable as well; I've never owned a turbo. Loved everything about the civic hatchback though.

    • @JoKIA_-100
      @JoKIA_-100 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bunating I’m only 10,000 miles in with mine but no complaints. I believe the dilution issue has been resolved in the later model years. There are several TH-cam videos that address it. I too have heard about the ac and heat issues. No complaints yet. Keeping me cool in 90 degree heat and warm in -20 F last January. It’s been about 25 years since I last owned a Honda. I’m hoping they are as good as they were back then.

      @@JoKIA_-100 Thanks for the reply. That's great to hear. I hope it lasts long and serves you well! Yes I've read that the 2019 model year & newer, the oil dilution issue is much less likely and is "fixed" from the factory where as the older models needed a recall. I think the oil dilution is not such a big deal but I got scared by it haha. I have a 2010 Honda accord which is still reliable. I too hope the newer ones are as good as the old ones! :)

    4:41 comment nailed it. The Toyota hatch styling is nice and "sporty", but not crazy.
    Should age well. These cars are all about value and durability.
    Add to that the Civic hatch's horrible styling, I can't get over those GIGANTIC fake air vents front and rear (now blanked out, but still grossly overstyled). Add to that, Civic had some really horrible quality in the near past, Civic is a hard pass.
    Honda is fixing these issues with the new Civic but right now, Toyota is a solid win.

    I just bought a used 2019 Corolla SE hatch. Love it. I traded in a 2005 Echo hatch that had 245,000 km on it. I went with the naturally aspirated Corolla for the longevity. I plan on also keeping this one for a long time. I held out for months hoping to find a manual SE, but I eventually realized I had a better chance of finding a red-headed unicorn than a manual SE hatchback.

    I think these would sell better if they got the Subaru treatment. Elevate the ride height somewhat, put a real roof rack not those stubby flush mounted ones and a 2 inch receiver for bike racks. Move the plastic around to give a more rugged appearance and tires with more sidewall. I think I just described the Crosstrek. Given the relative low sales compared to compact SUVs I would just move up to a small SUV. Resale in 4 years will be much better in a SUV over a niche market hatch

    Honda knows how to make cars with a lively suspension / steering combo, which gives the driver good feedback. The Toyota is a bit more main stream and sedate. Both cars are good cars. Choosing one is purely a personal preference.

  • @jello3671
    @jello3671 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm a believer in both Honda and Toyota being the pinnacle(s) of reliability and longevity. Put simply though, when speaking on the winner between these 2 hatchbacks in terms of reliability and longevity solely, the winner is Toyotas hatchback. Basically the damn Toyota hatchback will probably out live the driver. The reason this is true is because of Hondas focal point moving towards a more fun, zippy, and sportier hatchback. They're sacrificing their long known name of long term reliability for a more fun driving experience (which is subjective) by being a little quicker and sport like. You see Hondas 1.5 turbo design is a flawed design because of oil dilution. That problem can't be fixed by "reprogramming the computer" which they had tried to claim would fix it. The honest truth is the piston and piston rings need to be redesigned to fix it. It's still a great vehicle if maintained right. Hondas hatch is a great choice if you're not looking to own it for a long time and want a sportier feel. But the reality is that the turbo is just an extra thing to maintain or break. Toyotas bulletproof 2 liter NON turbo engine design is exactly that, bulletproof and will last longer than Hondas design. Hope this helps whoever is choosing between the two. It's really what you value more and what your plan is when purchasing these hatchbacks.

    Folks first thanks for Zack and Andrea for a honest comparison. This will really help fellow Canadians. Personally I took the civic hatch same trim as listed here, but in manual. It was discounted being a year old. If you can find a civic now or soon before the next gen comes out you might find a good deal. I wouldn't have paid full price for a sport touring. Comparing a brand new generation with a fairly new one is not fair, but it is what it is. Personally I think the corolla will last longer because of the civic's engine, but the drive, space and sunroof helped make my decision. I'm switching from a honda fit. In the civic hatch I can put myself and 2 passengers and 1 mountain bike inside, without the front tire. Not sure the corolla can do that. I'm not a fan of high mounted tablets mind you. The Civic's screen is a little slow, but does the job. I never use the right side turn signal camera (old fashioned I guess). Both need to be driven back to back. I find the civic's summer tires a little weak mind you. For winter tires I went down to 16" steelies without issue. Running on reg gas has no issues. If there was a GR version of the corolla hatch, in stick, my decision might have changed. Over all both will do the job - and probably for a small family - you'll be fine with either. If you don't need a SUV, put a decent set of winters on, both will make you happy campers. I just found the ride of the civic sportier. Note I typically keep my rides for 10 years. Bonus with the sport touring, and its not mentioned often enough, is the stereo has power and built in GPS with easy to do software updates. Cheers from Montreal (where we didn't get a Family day holiday!)

    They both seem like good affordable transportation with the added benefit of extra cargo capacity. But I must say I don't care for the styling of either of them. I think you were absolutely right when you said, "Just get the GTI...."

    If there was a naturally aspirated 2L in the Honda. I'd buy it easy

    TBH these are two completely different classes of cars; we're only comparing them because of the history of the name plates. The Civic is 177" long and 2815 lbs. The Corolla is 172" 2734lbs. The Civic starts at $32K CDN and the Corolla starts at $22k. Maybe you're cross shopping a high trim Corolla against the base Civic, but that's unlikely. The Corolla is still a Corolla, but the Civic is an Accord wagon by another name.

      Ah, the Civic starts at just over $24,000. Not sure what you are talking about....

      @@Motormouth... Unless I'm mistaken, the Civic Hatch starts at the Sport trim at $32k CDN on the Canadian site. The configurator only gives two options for the hatch. Unless there's something I'm missing, to me it feels like Honda is taking the Civic hatch up into a higher market space than the Corolla, which has a wider configuration range. When I look at the sedan to sedan comparisons, there doesn't seem to be as big a difference?

      Honda has an all-new model coming in a few months so they might have streamlined the production leading up to this. The Hatch until recently was available at the lower price..
