    Exactly why I feel Med Surge should get paid way more than they do. No one wants to work it which says A LOT. So they put a lot of black nurses on Med Surge and pay us pennies. Med Surge nurses need to ban together and fight for higher pay for the non nursing "customer service scores" these facilities want so bad.

      This exactly what I thought. So I applied to L&D and was told they dont have opening, but I can work their Acuity adaptable unit and in 6 month they will transfer me, and me being a new grad I accepted... then Lord and behold on orientation ( I got sick and missed my original orientation days, so had to continue orienting with the next month new hires ) two new grads and didn't even take their board exams yet ( I already passed and had my license upon hiring mind you )... GOT HIRED FOR THEIR L AND D UNIT 🙄... I was like this is basically undercover racism that we face. It is infuriating, the medsurge/Acuity unit I am working on is just pure hell. I hate it so much, making me second guess my career choice.

      Hi Jo'Arie! Believe me, I know exactly how you feel. Just know that the possibilities are endless in nursing so don't allow med surg to make you second guess your career choice. You will eventually find your niche!

    I’m graduating soon and I’m running from med surg nursing like it’s the plague. I know it’s recommended for new grads, but I don’t ever see myself doing that long term.

    Back when I started as a CNA. The nurse that was assigned to my unit made the assignments. So, essentially the nurse is the Supervisor and delegated what she needed of me to complete. There was no back talk, walking away as she/he spoke. There was a report off to us CNA’s. The sassiness did not exist when a nurse delegates. It’s taught to CNA’s what’s to be expected. In todays world just as you mentioned. The tug of war with aides is insane. A LOT of lip service and could care less about getting the things you’ve asked done. When I was a aid we would get written up. I work in LTC and it’s just as crazy.

    I second everything you said. I did adult med surge my first year as a new grad and God knows how much I was grateful for a job, but he also knew how much I hated it and he blessed me with a peds med surge position. Its been 4 years since I left adult med surge and I do not regret it. The travel rates right now are VERY tempting but like you said, your sanity is most important. Thanks for being brave enough to share this. Hope you found your sweet spot in nursing, or if its a different field, thats great too

    Thank you for this. It means more than you’ll ever know. I’ve always hated it. Tried to make myself feel differently because of the traveling nurse money available, but I just can’t risk my mental health. I’m too old (50)to purposely hurt myself this way for money. Everything you said from the techs, MD’s, ratios, just resonated with me. Thank you so much. You’re an inspiration. Many blessings to you always.

    Thank you for this! I started as a new grad on a very busy med-surg unit that takes in all sorts of unwanted patients from other units. Started on nights and am only 6 months in. But, it's been the longest 6 months ever. Making the switch to days because my body never adjusted to nights. Day shift just looks so much more chaotic. But, I'm hoping at least the added sleep will help me get through. I'm hoping to at least survive to one year and re-evaluate my options at that point.

    • @luvnurseb5552
      @luvnurseb5552  4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Hi there! Thanks for watching. It actually went smoother than I thought. I think she knew I had been unhappy there for a while but still appreciated how helpful I had been to the unit. She wanted me to stay another yr but I told I just didn't have it it in. I did an internal transfer to the OR after that. My advice regarding quitting any job is to never burn your bridges and don't be nasty about it. Always give sufficient notice.You never know who your current manager may know.

    Where i live i deal with a lotta drug addicts, meth users, homeless alcoholics. All mixed in with ortho and abd surgery patients. We’re a small community with no specialty units, so we basically see everything and anything. And the whole time you got case management harping on you with their own agenda’s, n you be like man i just wanna do my assigned tasks and go home.
