I do find the word 'expat' an interesting term. If you come from a European background and live in Asia for a long time - you are known as an 'expat'. But if an Asian were to migrate to a European country for a long period of time they are called an immigrant.
I find it interesting that anyone would try to compare those who migrate to a country to spend a lifetime of wealth earned at home, with those who migrate to a country penniless, in the hope of either earning a living - or, as in some cases, becoming a burden on that country’s finances. Expat retirees ≠ economic migrants. Regardless of which direction the movement.

No... an immigrant moves to another country and intends to live there and become a citizen. An expat moves to another country, whether short or long term (regardless of their race) but has no intention of becoming a citizen in their host country. There are no racial undertones, so don't stir the pot. I'm part Asian myself.

I came to Bali in the middle of 2021 and spent a year on a B211a visa then went back to Aus for 5 months, I have been back here for 5 months and am due to go back to Aus again early next month.. the next trip here will be the retirement one .. getting the kitas etc.. Agree with you that holidaying here is very different than living here, the language barrier can be a problem .. for everyday things, body language and gestures can help, but for the more official things .. take a local friend until you can converse in Bahasa Indonesian 😊.

Best travel insurance $50 per day for both of us….. my current thinking is to come for 2 months…. meet and talk with people to give advise on how to “lock in” a situation whereby we can come and be accepted for local medical insurance… once that is in place, the next stage of planning ie; longer stays etc…. My retirement will involve spending sixty days in Bali, then sixty days in Pattaya (Thailand), then back to Bali for another sixty days, then back to Pattaya.. and so forth. No need for a retirement visa in either country. I'm 57 now, so not too far off.

I Iive in Australia and I have clean air, a clean environment, healthy food, access to modern health services if I have a medical emergency . What I dont have is access to cheap labour. When the crap hits the fan and you are living in Bali you will soon find out it is a 3rd world country.

Me a Kenyan immigrant to Aussie who will definitely retire back home in my country with my partner 😅 after building ourselves three apartment buildings with 150 units each and just earn rental income in our retirement. So guess what we are doing.....busting our butts off for an early retirement. Lol it's interesting how both an immigrant and Aussie's end game looks pretty similar 😊. And yes it's true. Due diligence in developing countries is absolutely A MUST! You can really get conned especially on matters to do with land and business. So get yourself several reliable people. Even us locals we still get scammed 😂.

Having retired to Bali in July 2021 I can say there are many pros and cons. And it is not easy or as cheap as you think. There's lots of red tape and the goal posts are ever changing! Do we have any regrets? No not at all but it is so different to holidaying here...that bit must be stressed!
Hi mate, I've been to Bali and have spent over a year living in Batam with my Indonesian partner. We're always weighing up the options, and the options are staying in Batam, moving back to Australia, or moving to Bali/Lombok. I'll ask you a couple of questions if that's okay, and if you know the answer or if you have a video you want to direct me to then that's great. 1) How is medical care over there? I haven't been sick in years, but if I retire somewhere I'd want to make sure my family will be looked after if a problem comes up for any of us. 2) Are there many decent schools over there that don't charge a ridiculous amount but teach a decent level of education? I don't really want to have to spend more than 3-5k AUD per child per year on education. Some of the schools are charging over $20,000 a year per child. I know the local schools are really cheap, and we're fine with a local school as long as it won't hurt their career options later if they want to move to Australia as an adult. 3) What parts of Bali would you recommend as nice to settle down and live peaceful family life? We loved Ubud when travelling because of the food options, but it's probably more pricey. We'd most likely stay away from Kuta etc as they seem more like places to visit than places to live. Never got around to checking out the North or Western sides of the island. I guess those are my main ones for now. I have some idea of what houses cost, I know the food options in Bali are much better than Batam but not as good as Australia, which is about what one can expect. Any feedback from you or any of your subscribers would be appreciated.
Ok I'll try to make this easy. 1. There is a government medical insurance called BPGM or something similar, if you are married to an info you get on their family card and it is like $20/month for pretty good hospital care. My wife has needed emergency surgery and it was fully covered. 2. Schools. We are sending our son 13 yo to the main Catholic school in Denpasar. It is $1000 to register him and around $100/month AUD for school fees. Very reasonable and excellent school. 3. We live close to the school as my wife works there in the canteen, but Sanur is the first option I would recommend. Quiet, very western friendly, much less cost than other areas and still very nice.

Did I u derstand correctly that if you have a company registered in Bali, you can then purchase a residential property freehold - or is that still leasehold? Only Indonesian citizens can own property, everything else is a form of lease. To set a PT PMA company the minimum investment is 10billion IDR, easier to just get a retirement visa and sit back, enjoy yourself.

Well it's easy enough nowadays not to need educational videos. Your major problem is land/house/apartment ownership and older-age health costs. Oh and any Centrelink payments. Visas now aren't a problem so long as you have the money (it's all about money). And, can you speak Bahasa Indonesia? Bules cannot own land/houses/units in Indonesia. Don't be misled by anyone on this count. It must be in an Indonesian's name, and that means they will own it. So you need a wife/husband or someone you can totally trust. Because when you die, they will own it. And your Australian relatives can't touch it, no matter what a will may say. You are living under Indonesian law. Australia laws are completely irrelevant. As we get older and retire, our health fails. There is no Medicare in Indonesia and you will pay big. Serious stuff will cost you a mint, and a lot of illnesses and ailments will certainly be missed (which would have been picked up back in Australia). This is your major risk. You could get cancer for example and not know it. Yes you can fly back into Australia and get your medicals, but you've moved to Indonesia remember and you may not have a place to live in Australia. And then you have our escalating Australia health costs (which are now out of control). And your Medicare card may have expired (depending on how long you have been gone). And your medicals may take a long time. Yes in Jakarta and Singapore there are A1 medicals for everything you require, BUT YOU MUST PAY GIANT DOLLARS. Keep this in mind for when you may have any of the aged ailments that all of us are going to have to deal with (and there are plenty of them trust me). Your Centrelink pension will not continue if you (and your partner) permanently live in Indonesia. You will have to return to Australia on a schedule to stay within the rules, and STAY in Australia for the qualifying periods. Check them. If you are living on your own money/super then you don't have to worry about this if you are over the Centrelink limits. Visas these days are totally different to what we knew back in the 70s, 80s, 90s and 2000s. Now you just pay. And if you are married to an Indonesian (better if it's been a long time) it's even easier. If you've got heaps of super you will have no problems with this. But yes, as this bloke says the rules keep changing and that is Indonesia, and it always will be. That is the risk you take. If you live in any country you MUST know the base language (forget the local dialects you can't learn them). All your problems are just compounded if you do not. It's not easy (despite what all the idiots say) and it takes many years. Going to run a restaurant, losmen, tattoo parlour? Hahahahahahahaha! Too funny.

Murray, I have researched and have friends who live as expats and the common theme is lease/rent as then you can leave at the drop of a hat if the need arises. Retirement to us is freedom to travel, live and experience different cultures. Maybe different to single guys who have the need to find someone or cannot be content by themselves! Bali is a third world country let’s face it and an attraction to those who cannot always afford to live without a good salary in retirement bliss and now Bali is NOT the cheap alternative as it was 5-10 years ago . Traffic and chaos no different to Melbourne or Sydney .
Hi Tony, as foreigners are not generally allowed to own property in Bali everyone has to lease /rent so I find that comment a bit unusual. Often you have to pay a multi year lease up front so "drop of the hat" leaving makes you forfeit the balance you have paid for. Everyone's situation is different so I can only talk about generalites

Yes we have a word in INdonesia Jam Karet. we Indonesian are Lazy.. If I had to translate Rubber Hours.. if we promise to meet at 2 pm we probably meet at 3 pm. No one feels preassured to do anything on these islands.. that's the beauty. It is why many people likes Bali.. because they never felt preassured.. if anything there is no preassure against you on the islands.. you dont have to wake up at 8AM and go to work at 10 am til 6 pm or so on..

Well it's easy enough nowadays not to need educational videos. Your major problem is land/house/apartment ownership and older-age health costs. Oh and any Centrelink payments. Visas now aren't a problem so long as you have the money (it's all about money). And, can you speak Bahasa Indonesia?
Bules cannot own land/houses/units in Indonesia. Don't be misled by anyone on this count. It must be in an Indonesian's name, and that means they will own it. So you need a wife/husband or someone you can totally trust. Because when you die, they will own it. And your Australian relatives can't touch it, no matter what a will may say. You are living under Indonesian law. Australia laws are completely irrelevant.
As we get older and retire, our health fails. There is no Medicare in Indonesia and you will pay big. Serious stuff will cost you a mint, and a lot of illnesses and ailments will certainly be missed (which would have been picked up back in Australia). This is your major risk. You could get cancer for example and not know it. Yes you can fly back into Australia and get your medicals, but you've moved to Indonesia remember and you may not have a place to live in Australia. And then you have our escalating Australia health costs (which are now out of control). And your Medicare card may have expired (depending on how long you have been gone). And your medicals may take a long time. Yes in Jakarta and Singapore there are A1 medicals for everything you require, BUT YOU MUST PAY GIANT DOLLARS. Keep this in mind for when you may have any of the aged ailments that all of us are going to have to deal with (and there are plenty of them trust me).
Your Centrelink pension will not continue if you (and your partner) permanently live in Indonesia. You will have to return to Australia on a schedule to stay within the rules, and STAY in Australia for the qualifying periods. Check them. If you are living on your own money/super then you don't have to worry about this if you are over the Centrelink limits.
Visas these days are totally different to what we knew back in the 70s, 80s, 90s and 2000s. Now you just pay. And if you are married to an Indonesian (better if it's been a long time) it's even easier. If you've got heaps of super you will have no problems with this. But yes, as this bloke says the rules keep changing and that is Indonesia, and it always will be. That is the risk you take.
If you live in any country you MUST know the base language (forget the local dialects you can't learn them). All your problems are just compounded if you do not. It's not easy (despite what all the idiots say) and it takes many years. Going to run a restaurant, losmen, tattoo parlour? Hahahahahahahaha! Too funny.

Murray, I have researched and have friends who live as expats and the common theme is lease/rent as then you can leave at the drop of a hat if the need arises.
Retirement to us is freedom to travel, live and experience different cultures. Maybe different to single guys who have the need to find someone or cannot be content by themselves!
Bali is a third world country let’s face it and an attraction to those who cannot always afford to live without a good salary in retirement bliss and now Bali is NOT the cheap alternative as it was 5-10 years ago . Traffic and chaos no different to Melbourne or Sydney .
Hi Tony, as foreigners are not generally allowed to own property in Bali everyone has to lease /rent so I find that comment a bit unusual. Often you have to pay a multi year lease up front so "drop of the hat" leaving makes you forfeit the balance you have paid for.
Everyone's situation is different so I can only talk about generalites
Pretty sure Tony means “buying” a property on a 20 - 25 year lease. IE leasehold only😊

Yes we have a word in INdonesia Jam Karet. we Indonesian are Lazy.. If I had to translate Rubber Hours.. if we promise to meet at 2 pm we probably meet at 3 pm. No one feels preassured to do anything on these islands.. that's the beauty. It is why many people likes Bali.. because they never felt preassured.. if anything there is no preassure against you on the islands.. you dont have to wake up at 8AM and go to work at 10 am til 6 pm or so on..
