I'm a mechanic by trade and that's what I have been doing for 13 years. I recently purchased a GTR r35 that was wrapped white. I rewrapped it millennium jade with zero experience. I had to redo a couple of the panels. But with time and patience you can do it. It's an art form for sure. I agree you should always have wrapped removed before buying a car. But I knew I was going to wrap this car before I bought it and you can use that as a bargaining chip to lower the price if the seller doesn't want to remove it.

On hiding license plates in car ads: I hear, in the UK, people justify hiding plates out of fear of them getting cloned: then someone can use a clone of the plate on a car of the same model and not care about speeding and parking fines. People report getting a speeding and parking tickets from places on the other side of the country they've never gone to. I've seen many discussions about this... but on the other hand, what's there stopping a scammer from taking a few photos of a car parked on the street?

The scam works better if you clone a plate of a car that's the same model, colour and close to the same year. So it's much quicker and easier to just search online.
It's such a serious problem in Australia that no online ads for dealers show plates.

Regarding the classics in the UAE: The laws are ridiculously strict about driving a classic car, where you're limited by annual mileage depending on which category/year your vintage car falls under. They even have special "classic" license plates that are authorized specifically by the traffic department. With that being said, there are a ton of classic car clubs that meet regularly when the weather is nice (just gotta watch the mileage).

As the owner of a '94 Lexus SC300 (modified) I was interested in the discussion of the SC series. The SC300 & SC400 were essentially the same year Toyota Supra in a tuxedo. The basic chassis, suspension type and engine (SC300) were the same as the Supra. I have the factory brochure on the 300/400. In '94 you could get a SC400 with V8 and auto transmission (only). The SC300 was available with the Toyota JZ6 with either auto or manual transmission. The official statistics showed identical 0-60 times for the V8/auto and the I6/manual. My SC300 has the 5-speed manual. I felt the stock performance was anemic. Of course, since it had a JZ6 many performance options were/are available. After purchasing the car used I made a number of mods. Most notably the engine was turbocharged, yielding 336 RWHP. The vehicle was also lowered 1 inch and both 18" and 20" aftermarket wheels mounted (currently on the 20's). Some Supra fans who have been priced out of that market are starting to recognize the mechanical similarity between the two. The SC430 has none of that. My local auto shop employees opined that my SC300 is likely worth about $15,000.

There definitely are classic cars in the UAE, mostly imports from the USA and Japan. I've met local collectors who owned 20, 30 and even 40 classics each, mostly muscle cars from the 60/70s, old pick up trucks and a few Nissan (240z is the most common classic car here). But it's true that you don't see them around town much; you need to go to cars & coffee (for example at Flat12) or meet the owners.

I've always felt the same about the license plate. When I sell a vehicle, I make sure it's clean and all the stuff I have for it goes with it. It's amazing to me when I'm looking for a vehicle that words like "no issues", "perfect", and "very clean" have a COMPLETELY different meaning to me than they do for them. Guy was selling a motorcycle with "no issues" that had the fairings put on with zip ties. I popped open the fuel tank and there was corrosion inside the lid. I drove an 1.5hrs to see the bike only to find out the person didn't even have a title for it and they were selling it for someone else. After hearing that, I walked. GM loved their plastic lug nut covers.

44:23 Agreed the 997.1 Turbo is a let down. I always wanted a turbo 911 and came from AWD Mitsubishis so this was my dream car. Not only was mine unreliable, but worse the performance was a let down. There is a significant delay in the e-throttle that makes it feel unresponsive. The AWD is unnecessary in a rear engine car at its horsepower level and just adds weight and numbness.
I gave my brother-in-law a ride and he wasn't impressed with the power. Took it to a small road course and its times were disappointing.
For anybody debating a 997.1 Turbo get a RWD, manual 991.2. Way better car in every way besides maybe looks (subjective) and size.

I think the outlandish or super unique colored wraps will go away, but just the general idea of wrapping to easily and somewhat cheaply change the color of your car is here to stay. I don't know why anyone would paint a car at all unless they planned on keeping it for a very long time. For me, I like buying used cars, but I only like certain colors, so instead of narrowing down my search I can just buy the model I want and then wrap it. Since I plan on selling it later it preserves the original paint and resale value of the car, an added bonus.

Was gonna say the AMG GT. I just bought a GTS about a month ago. It’s so much car for the money. And you never see them around. People haven’t even heard about them. Mid front engine, transmission in the back 53/47 weight distribution. true dual clutch trans. V8 twin truth 500+hp. For $60-$70k. Crazy good deal. I paid $62k for mine. MSRP in 2016 was $143k. They are absolutely a “super car”

Dont think Evora has ever been a super car. Its main competitor is the Cayman GTS.

Doug is spot on about wraps. I'm a Porsche snob and whenever I see a non-GT 911 in a bold color I always check the VIN to see if the color is actually genuine from the factory. Nine times out of 10, it's a wrap with black or silver paint underneath.

    • @somenygaard
      @somenygaard 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Then after you figure out wrap or factory paint what do you do with this knowledge?

If the wrap is that good you have to check the VIN to see if it's paint then that's a win for the wrap.

We still love our sprinter from Storyteller Overland. Just took it out this past weekend. I'd argue it's one of the best builds for money I paid for it in 2021. It definitely had slowed down but there are plenty out there.
We were in the New Mexico National Forests overlanding in it. Probably has seen more offroad than what doug thinks he offroads in his Land Cruiser or what he us going to do in his new Sequoia :)

It's great watching these being a 37 year old who grew up in similar time/class as these guys. I get ALL the references and when Filippo talks about facelifted 1st gen Focus being terrible but not as bad as those GM Minivans that were mediocre in the late 90s only to be made terrible and borderline offensive by the mid 00's after those hideous "crossover" facelifts.

Glad I’m not alone in thinking that the 550/575 are some of the last classic Ferraris and are bound to go up in value. Unfortunately I’m a couple of years away from being in that position, and I think they’ll be out of reach by the time I’m ready.

i bet if you sold a set of cardboard/heavy card stock Cars & Bids placards in the size & shape of a US license plate with adhesive on the back, that people could have sent to them and place over their plates, some sellers would take you up on it. could also just be a template with the Cars & Bids logo on it, sized to print on a 8.5x11 piece of paper at home
