As a 4Runner owner it’s ALL about the rear window. New Land Cruiser is awesome but the rear window doesn’t roll down… for the same price I would still take the 4Runner
Doug is probably the best suited to do a car podcast on TH-cam. He's been doing the car industry for a long time and as he's also a business owner knows/ has access to buy/sell trends. His opinion matters.
I noticed an Ocean in the Walt Disney world, Gold football (Executive) parking lot a few months ago and was like, what is this car company?! Bet he or she is regretting the purchase.
The land Cruiser is not in the $40k-$60k range. It's in the $58k-$70k range ignoring the first edition trim. Toyota has a price gap of $40k-$60k which is where the 4runner is going to slot into.. That being said, the LC is so close in physical size, I'm very interested to see what they're going to do.
Agreed on all your points. I wonder if the same size situation is resolved simply by having enough demand for that type of suv that even though they compete against each other, both can succeed
also, i hope that he addresses what kind of land cruiser we get in the US since this is the land cruiser Prado, which is a midsize land cruiser we never got until now and only existed as a Lexus GX, while the LX600 is based on the full size LC 300 series, although the "midsize" LC has more interior headroom and around the same legroom as the "fullsize" LC
@@ne6nk I was too. Especially since Toyota has been saying it was going to start in the mid $50k range for months before they announced official pricing. Mistakes happen. But that one was a bit surprising.
A tip 987 for $12k is honestly worth it. IMS was _mostly_ fixed by '07, and on those higher mileage engines it's less of a concern. Good aftermarket forum support, and the 6 spd. manuals didn't like to keep 2nd gear anyway.
It's crazy to see the Car Care Nut's 600,000mi LS430 brought up on this episode! As a huge fan of Car Care Nut and also a big fan of LS430s and 400s, that segment of the podcast took me by surprise and made me happy
This is the 2nd show in a row to mention Ryan Schultz and E39 Source (Hoovies M6 conversion, now Kennans M5 “spa day”). Can we get him as a podcast guest?
1:42 it’s not complicated or strange. It’s going to be a Tacoma without the bed. Simple. Same engine options and I want you to say even same transmission options which implies a manual coming back to the 4Runner.
Apple should buy Fisker and make their 4 models Apple Cars. The design aesthetic and innovative features fit Apple perfectly. Apple can then take over the software and easily make it the best in the auto industry. I think it could be massive
Magma is molten rock underneath the crust of the Earth. As soon as it comes out and hits the air, it is Lava. 😅 I don’t know why I remember that but I do,must’ve been those volcano science experiments with vinegar, and baking soda.
The last discussion regarding the LS460 reminds me of a scene from Crocodile Dundee 2. A man comes away from a video by car care nut, that says the LS460 is worse than the previous generations. He stumbles upon a man that says he's got a Doug. "A what?" "A Doug". Out comes a man in a t-shirt with the certainty of an expert mechanic and says: "Doug!"
"1000% a model 3", the new one. I agree 1000%. I now can afford a 911, but with the leading EV's right now, the question is WHY would I do that? You can chase a childhood dream or drive the futur now.
This video is a good reminder that sometimes auto journos just say things without taking the time to fact check. Doug is saying the Land Cruiser occupies the $40k-$60k space. The Land Cruiser starts at $55,900 before delivery. Maybe 4Runner alongside LC would make more sense to him if he did some research prior to recording.
The Mini Cooper thing is so spot on. My grandparents went from owning 2 big Infiniti sedans to a matching set of manual mini countryman’s with matching inverse color schemes… because they were cute. Black with silver wheels and accents and a white roof, and silver with all black accents and a black roof. They have maybe done 40k miles in the 13 years since purchase
Yes, magma is what's in the Earth. Lava is after it erupts. From what everyone has said from the NY auto show, Genesis plans on giving all models the magma treatment and that the US will get all of them. That coupe is a concept, but it will be made in some form or another.
Kennan, unless it’s gonna rust, you should consider rocking the patina in a car like that. I make decisions the same way on my 1997 high mileage manual sedan. Mechanical stuff comes first.
As for 4Runner vs Land Cruiser, I too used to believe they were gonna make the 4Runner a Bronco Sport of Toyota, but now it's clear that they aim for the same situation as it was in the 2000s Japan and some other markets where TLC Prado coexisted with the Hilux Surf (4Runner). In Japan they were essentially the same vehicle with not even the luxuries and the full time AWD differentiating the Prado, cos high spec Surfs had those as well. And it's not that unusual for Toyota. In the states I think you've only got the Camry, in Japan Toyota sold the big RWD Mark II, the Cresta and the Chaser - all 3 nearly identical, the Crown, the Corona and Carina, which, again, were about the same size, the small Tercel, the Corsa, the Starlett, the huge, almost an SUV-sedan Vista, which in some generations was nearly identical to the Camry, the about the same size Carina ED, the smaller Corona Premio, the Corolla wagon called Caldina, the Probox, another wagon, the offroady wagon Carib, previously called Sprinter Carib, the Sprinter, the non-hybrid Prius thing called Platz, the futuristic Will-S, the Crown Majesta, which is apparently not the same as regular Crown, a RWD luxury sedan, the Altezza, the Avensis - and those are just sedans, hatchbacks and wagons off the top of my head😮 Kind of like how GM had countless brands with hugely overlapping niches back in the 60s and 70s.
What keeps LS460 prices low is the high cost of maintenance when compared to the previous generation LS430s and LS400s. Look up common problems (mainly suspension and brake actuator failures), see what the repair costs are, and how likely are you to run into those repair costs multiple times during the ownership of the car. You simply don't run into that with the previous generations.
On the last discussion about Lexus LS prices, I think the main reason they’re so cheap is that the kind of buyer who buys a used luxury car isn’t looking for a full sized sedan. The people in the market for used luxury cars are mostly young (under 45) and young people don’t want those land yachts, if they’re looking for a sedan they generally want a midsize and if they want a big car with lot of space they’ll go for an SUV. The market for full size sedans these days is exclusively made up of people over 50 and people that age have saved up a lot of money, they don’t care about the depreciation hit and for the most part they’re buying or leasing brand new cars.
Please number your podcasts! Glad to see you on youtube. When I think of podcast, I usualy just think of audio. Great cast, cool set, and great content. You might want to break this show up into 4 - 20 minute videos for possibly more views.
The R8 is dying because they didn't update the DAMN THING! It doesn't have a manual transmission that would make it sell 10x more, but even with just DCG it doesn't have ACC, which is INSANE for the price! It makes the 911 look like pure tech and luxury!
Doug, this is a great format. Really enjoying it. Kennen(?) is full of great stats, commentary and info, he's great. He doesn't make for a good solo-presenter, but he is in his true element as a foil to you and your other guests. He knows his stuff and it shows. Having Hoovie on was very, very cool. As a commentator for Barrett-Jackson, he is under-used as a roaming-commentator. He should be to to work as the 'color-guy' on the actual auction-block cars as they pass before the potential buyers. I would love to get his take on some of those offerings, for better or worse. Anyway, definitely subscribing to this channel, so glad you are presenting it. I hate to say it, but I like it more than your usual car reviews. The three of you shooting off opinions and critiques is priceless and so informative. Keep up the good work. Check out my question for you all. I'm dying to know the answer.
52:50 I think the 2010 Mini JCW is one of the most fun cars ever made. It’s sad the hot hatch sub compact market and hot wagons aren’t more popular in North America. Although my dream daily is a Porsche 911 S/T I know it’s just that. A dream. What if you want similar fun on a very meager budget? The only other daily with some practicality that provides an exhilarating driving experience for me is the jcw. Gives me the same kind of feeling Doug gets in the Countach. Would love to know what others think.
I have to disagree with Doug's take on McLaren. McLaren seems to have taken the spot of Lamborghini in terms of desirability and cool factor. But I appreciate his car knowledge
TRD trims are (as of now) only going to be available on the 4runner. The 4runner has historically had far better approach angles than what the new land cruiser has, even in non-TRD trims. But if someone's looking at a Limited or other higher price on-road trim of the 4runner or base land cruiser, there's a lot of overlap.
0:32 correction, the Land Cruiser starts 55k to 76k. The 4Runner will sell in the 40k to high 50k. Yes there will be overlap with the TRD Pro and the LC 1958. Let’s not pretend the vehicle will sell in the 30k range. Likely you can copy and paste the Taco trims and power train to the new 4Runner. What’s unknown: Power sliding rear glass 3rd row option Mexican or Japan made (This could be the biggest factor for those of use looking to buy and hold for the next 15+ years)
It is no problem for the manufacturer to make it difficult for customers: It is then just a matter of removing the possibility of charging, workshops, warranty, updating.
Good stuff and fun, so reminds me of a certain old car show I miss and could get into watching this one, show more pics of the cars you are talking about
Doug is 100% correct on the LS. If I didn’t have a son who needs a wheelchair I’d own one in a second. There’s just no reliable suv you can get for that type of discount.
Kennan, you should consider buying one of the mentioned Lexus, because if you spend so much money to maintain your BMW in good condition, buying a cheap, reliable, and comfortable Lexus will save you money in the future. And also it will save your BMW in good condition longer.
I think they will make the 4R an enclosed tacoma. I think they will build it in mexico alongside the tacoma. Between the 90% part-sharing and the cheaper manufacturing costs, they will drop the price, as you mentioned, to $35-55k range. That slots it just below the LC.
not entirely sure, but the Genesis coupe on the far right in that photo of the magma collection looks very similar to the Genesis VGT in Gran Turismo 7
Love your guys podcast, everything about cars and with cool people like Doug Demuro is always cool... I simply wanted to respond on the Lexus LS460, I've heard that this model in particular is extremely unreliable,to rather opt for the previous LS430 but to run from the 460 models.
I think viewed in a bubble of only Toyota/Lexus, the 460 is somewhat less reliable than their average (front suspension wearing out in early 460's etc. etc). But i would take a 2014 LS 460 with 120K miles over like, a brand new Equinox any day.
Very excited for the car spotting videos!! I was inspired by your spotting vids I tried doing that in Coronado island a year ago and it’s fun to drive around with someone and just look at interesting cars.

6:14 oh yeah, the Genesis Vision Gran Turismo, made by Genesis for the Gran Turismo racing game as a concept car that may, or may not, become an actual car (the new Supra was based on the FT-86 Vision Gran Turismo concept and the McLaren Solus is a production version of the McLaren VGT)
to add to the small luxury point, the problem with small luxury cars is that small means tossable and enexpensive. if they spend a lot of money on a small car they will not want to park it just anywhere in a big city. visually small luxury doesnt work.
why are you guys talking so fast and rushing through each story? it feels like i'm watching it on 1.25x speed, it's super weird. just relax...btw last weeks episode with hoovie was PERFECT. more hoovie and more guests. it'd be so awesome to have a different car youtuber on every week. or anyone interesting from the car industry. like shop owners, dealers, former car company execs, etc. you could easily become the Joe Rogan of the car world. you have the clout. everyone in the car industry loves doug demuro. we want to hear you have conversations with other car guys. and there's absolutely no reason to speed things up. 4 runners are basically a rougher riding highlander as far as size. ( close). Amazing how they can do this and keep a large following
The new LC starts within a few hundred of where the current 4R TRD Pro starts at so I think the 4Runner will just stay in its usual price range

Google earth or traffic cam car spotting in unusual markets (Egypt, Bolivia etc)
would you commute with model 3 or Porsche ? Filippo: model 3. Doug: you are fired 🤣
PDK Cayman sounds like a fun track car at those prices.
These podcasts give me top gear vibes.
The thumbnails should change more each episode and have the episode number larger to make it easier to navigate episodes. I want to make sure I don’t miss one!
Continuing Jeremy Clarkson’s show in a new cool way. THIS is awesome!
to add to the small luxury point, the problem with small luxury cars is that small means tossable and enexpensive. if they spend a lot of money on a small car they will not want to park it just anywhere in a big city. visually small luxury doesnt work.
why are you guys talking so fast and rushing through each story? it feels like i'm watching it on 1.25x speed, it's super weird. just relax...btw last weeks episode with hoovie was PERFECT. more hoovie and more guests. it'd be so awesome to have a different car youtuber on every week. or anyone interesting from the car industry. like shop owners, dealers, former car company execs, etc.
you could easily become the Joe Rogan of the car world. you have the clout. everyone in the car industry loves doug demuro. we want to hear you have conversations with other car guys. and there's absolutely no reason to speed things up. JRE episodes go for 3 hours and people watch every minute. i'm not saying the podcast needs to be 3 hours, but it'd be awesome if there was no specific time you were shooting for. just talk casually and let the conversation flow at a normal pace.
this episode is legit making me anxious, because it's so goddamn fast i can't keep up.
I like this format
