Glad Matt is coming around to Maserati. They have the intangible benefit of still feeling exotic, with genuinely unique platforms. In a world where Porsche has become the iPhone in terms of dominance, it's refreshing to have compelling alternatives
I think the base Modena has all the power you can actually USE, and the Trofeo models aren't worth the extra cost. This is one of the last great (true) GTs. I would love to own one.
Amazing to see Maserati actually putting quality back into their lineup, you can tell they are really going all with these last couple of models. When I saw the Italian flag inside that interior I thought "wow, that is Italian design and quality". I have been a hater on Maserati for a long time but I'm really liking what they are putting out recently.

The old "Ferrari" derived V8 was overrated anyways, didn't sound that great and wouldn't have been considered that special had it not had the Ferrari designation. This new engine is a massive improvement
It kind of does if you squint a little. Its a continued evolution of the Alfa Quadrafolgio Twin Turbo V6 which by all account is just that Ferrari v8 with 2 cylinder lopped off.
If you think the F136 V8 engines “didn’t sound that great” that’s crazy. It was a reliable engine and sounded amazing. Saying it wasn’t special if it wasn’t designed by Ferrari is pointless. Picking any good sounding engine and saying “well if it wasn’t made by so-and-so it wouldn’t be special” has the same pointlessness. It WAS designed by Ferrari. It wasn’t the most powerful engine, but had they developed it more they could have improved the 440hp figure. Compression ratio, small displacement bump, head rework, exhaust, cam reworks could pull out maybe another 40hp to make it 480hp or so. Albeit expensive, people have gone to some aftermarket exhaust to improve the power already. This new engine is way worse in sound and presumably in reliability too. The only way it’s “better” is in horsepower.
Personally, I think a six is enough. But that V8 in the last generation was glorious. Also, that price...it's $40,000 too expensive, especially when you consider the existence of the LC500.
I agree but despite being a version of the ferrari V8 with two cylinders missing a 90 degree V6 will always be less than a thoroughbred engine. would actually rather they upgraded their last 60 degree V6 to have a closed deck since it was also designed by Ferrari, it was just optimized for mass production.

I think in terms of induction noise in cabin the V6 sounds pretty exotic. I am sad about the V8 going away, but it seems like a different car, modeled around a more peppy drivetrain. Would be cool to see a 2019 V8 model One Take if you haven't done one already. As for reliability, I know the V8 wasn't known to be dependable but surely a turbo, direct injected, cylinder deactivated italian engine will be worse.
The V8 was reliable, they took an engine designed to rev high with very high tolerances and made it rev much lower and produced less power. They were very under stressed for what they were.
I like how the styling hasn't changed much... still a very beautiful car. Some of the styling on other vehicles is getting a little to angular and oddball aggressive Japanese chimpokomon or whatever that crap is. Anyway, not sure if I've ever heard you say or not, but how do you prefer paddle shifters? Wheel mounted or column mounted? I myself like the mostly Italian way with column mounted paddles so they are always in the same place while making tight turns.
Love it. I would choose another color though, as they do have some really nice ones. And of course we miss the Ferrari engine, but Maserati GT is an iconic model and carries that new Maserati engine in a chassis that is made to cruise and flow through curves. It has remained consistent in styling and by now is very well developed. My brother had a deep wine colored Ferrari V8 engine Quattroporte which was very nice and quick as well, so I can imagine the GT being that sweet step up in handling and form and a classy drive as well. A solid luxurious build. I also wish it were priced a bit lower, but seeing all the competitions pricing, Maserati probably had to slot it in there. Still, if they decided to lower it a bit, they would have so many more customers who might not want the standard cars we see to much from other brands. Always nice to see a sweet Maserati GT! Cue Blue Oyster Cult "Maserati GT(I Ain't Got You)"
Easiest fix for your foot hitting something between the gas/brake is to use left foot braking. When I'm not driving a manual, I use left foot braking to keep my foot busy. No, I don't ride the brake. No I don't constantly hover over or rest my foot on the pedal. Much faster response time, and with a paddle shift, it's a good way to go.
I can't stand people who do this. Driving with the brake lights constantly on. I know you specified "you don't hover over the pedal", but it'll still happen regardless. You won't know it, but all of us behind you surely do! Maybe you're the best two foot driver out there, but I definitely wouldn't suggest to people that they do this since it's a very unsafe habit (for the people behind you) to have.
@@jeffs6090 I'm not a fan of people who assume without ever seeing me how I do it, but especially when pointing out exactly how I don't do what you assume I do. So does everyone driving a clutch automatically ride it no matter what, since clearly by your assumptions they have to rest their foot on the clutch like you assume is being done with the brakes? There's a dead pedal/flat spot to the left of the pedals for a reason. The technique I use is a valid one. Not touching the brake pedal except when applying them. Go learn how to do it, appreciate the extra control you get once you learn and thank me later.
Pricing is crazy, bought my wife the same drivetrain, chassis and interior in a Grecale trofeo for half the money and twice the practicality. For the money it needed the real nettuno engine from mc20, glass roof and ceramics at a minimum
Biggest complaint with Masersti in the past was the interior. Finally they've brought it up to modern standards. I do miss that old flat plane V8 I thought it just needed a better transmission.
I saw one of these cars at the Atlanta Motorsports Park race track in North Georgia on Sunday and it's a stunning car. If I had the cash I'd buy it over the MB SL AMG, and BMW M8. Prob take it over an Aston Martin Vantage. It would've been great if they made it sound like the old V8 Barry White inspired engine.
Good review...always drive a car to know what its really like...I've driven two cars that when moving my foot from accelerator pedal to brake pedal I've touched the steering column so they were a no no!

Cheers from Vancouver, Canada.
Maserati knocked it out of the park with this car, learned from their (few) mistakes with the last gen GT, another timeless design. You gotta figure that its target consumer is someone who already owns a bonafide supercar and this is more of a daily driver, so I am not the least bit surprised by the price tag, but as you said it makes sense and is reasonable when put into perspective. I think the more surprising fact is that the MC20 is priced so low, wouldn't be surprised to see that rise in the near future.
How does cylinder deactivation work? if we're not spraying/sparking the deactivated cylinders, aren't those cylinders just engine braking? unless they can somehow open the valves of deactivated cylinders? but wouldn't the cams continue to turn?
Bloody hell, that’s one monster of a question that I’m not even going to attempt to answer my friend, as I haven’t got all day! All I’d say is that, having it on my 4.0 718 (and Porsche generally do technical wizardry better than most) it sucks, making weird noises as it switches cylinder banks and generally not giving the smooth, uninterrupted power delivery you’d expect on an expensive car. Whether it delivers the 3% to 5% efficiency improvement claimed I can’t tell you, because thankfully it has one great redeeming feature - an OFF button. It’s a bit like engine start/stop - great for the official CO2 figures but a pain to live with.
In the Nettuno engine the deactivated bank is always the right one. It is deactivated the injection, the ignition electrical system and all the valves put in closed position. The trapped air acts as an air spring. They save about 7% of fuel.
Can you believe they've had past partnerships with Bulgari and even Audemars Piguet? Who in their right mind decided it was a good idea to drop their premium partners?!?
I own an M8 and recently started thinking about getting something different. There’s no way I will trade it for this car. Even if it was cheaper. $229 is insanity! New AMG GT looks promising though.
That engine is waaay back there! I remember someone making a comment on a previous video saying you should invest in corner scales so that you can verify the claims of these manufacturers.
@@grievuspwn4g3 it goes without saying that an 8, 10 or V12 unit will sound better. If u engine swap it with cross plane crank version of the ferrari 458 v8 in the old gran turismo, which is one of the best sounding things ever created way better then even the ferrari, then it could be a masterpiece.
That’s a good question. Maserati publicly insist it’s their own design, and other commenters on here have (incorrectly I believe) described it as a Ferrari V8 with 2 cylinders lopped off. I seem to recall one of the respected and likely highly-informed UK journo’s (testing the MC20) mischievously noting that the engine’s quoted layout and internal dimensions were “not identical but remarkably similar, and who’s going to actually scientifically check these things?” to Alfas V6, so I’m inclined to go with that…

To be fair considering the discounts on MSRP Maserati dealers are openly offering this is more like a $150- $170,000 car.
Great used car to buy for 150k
Still nothing worth it for the price. Porsche and Austin Martin vantage over this thing
Anyone know what watch Matt is wearing? Love the blue faded strap too.
Looks like the GS Carl Ruiz LE
Don't judge a car by its decibels. Quiet is smooth. Quiet is efficient. Quiet is refined.
Honestly if I want a front-mid engined car that costs less than 200-300k, I’d buy the Gen 1 AMG GT R. Diff car yes, but if it’s a drivers car with bootspace, that fits the bill imo
Sooooo stifffff though. - ZK
I just love the clinical and concise approach to your reviews. Great watch!
It’s a nice car for $40k in 4 years
I think in terms of induction noise in cabin the V6 sounds pretty exotic.
I'd wait for the Folgore!
Cue Blue Oyster Cult "Maserati GT(I Ain't Got You)"
Love the switching between camera angles in this one. Great video Matt.
You could buy this...or a corvette, truck, trailer, and small bass boat.
Yes if you are fat and white a vette is the way to go
Pricing is crazy, bought my wife the same drivetrain, chassis and interior in a Grecale trofeo for half the money and twice the practicality. For the money it needed the real nettuno engine from mc20, glass roof and ceramics at a minimum
For $220k how about a slightly used MC20!😂
Always like the look but the price is silly. However, the fact that its now AWD makes it much more viable 911 alternative in Canada.
Biggest complaint with Masersti in the past was the interior. Finally they've brought it up to modern standards. I do miss that old flat plane V8 I thought it just needed a better transmission.
Can't wait to pick this up for 25K in 2030
I saw one of these cars at the Atlanta Motorsports Park race track in North Georgia on Sunday and it's a stunning car. If I had the cash I'd buy it over the MB SL AMG, and BMW M8. Prob take it over an Aston Martin Vantage. It would've been great if they made it sound like the old V8 Barry White inspired engine.
Great Matt, now I want another car you’ve reviewed!! I’m having trouble saving up for these machines 😂
Another great review Mr Farah
That shot of the engine bay is crazy, with the motor so far to the rear.
For $170K there are just so many other options where people don't have to worry about reliability and sourcing parts.
Yes, it doesnt sound as good as the outgoing V8 but c'mon, this is a good sounding V6.
Completely agreed. Avoids the rasp of the standard V6 and goes for a clean, deep baritone sound. That said, a twin-turbo V8 would have been better.
I love when you do videos alone bro. I dont know why, but Zach can be off putting quite a bit, maybe it’s just me…. Anyways, stoked for this one
11 seconds 199 mph. That's freaking fast 😅😅😅😅 you said it not me
Good review...always drive a car to know what its really like...I've driven two cars that when moving my foot from accelerator pedal to brake pedal I've touched the steering column so they were a no no!
I have a 2017 Gran Turismo MC and honestly i think if Maserati would sell the new GT around $90-100k they would sell it like pan cakes
Should've been a TTV8 or better at that price
150 I could of got behind but not at this price, I would even think about a turbo or M8 comp over this
Hey Matt, what kind of watch are you wearing on this video? Omega?
Great review. And a really nice car.
Love the brand own a levante..but this was priced poorly...might as well buy an mc20..they are struggling to sell this ..3 are still sitting on my dealers lot for last year
I don't know if I'm feeling these videos with 80% of the time the camera looking at you driving. The dash view doesn't add much either. POV style or even a cockpit camera looking at your inputs would be a lot more interesting to watch for a 20m video.
Wait, didn’t he say it had a V6 at the beginning of the video? I know, I know, everybody makes mistakes, but how about a subtitle at the bottom of the screen stating so?
I think this car will depreciate hard (at least I hope it does lol) but when it does it will be an absolute bargain. Can’t justify sticker price for it but around or just under 100 grand used, this car would be an ideal pick. Very excited to see the direction Maserati is taking & I’m sure a good tuning company like AWE can bring the V6 exhaust note to life.
P.S. - Love the jacket! Very cool, especially with the patches. Need that Gum Ball one.
Ad good as the Nettuno is, I miss the V8 sound.
Hey Matt.
Happy New Year. All the Very BEST to you, your family & loved ones in 2024 and beyond🙂
Thx for the post (again). You bring us along on opportunities that we simply don't have the connections for, time or canyons to test out these cars & vehicles the way you do.
Sincerely - TY TY TY!!!
I'm seeing some interesting comments about the sound of the previous gen Maserati GranTurismo. Here's a clip to remind everyone of how AWESOME that v-8 sounds.
th-cam.com/video/Sn2e-24cVng/w-d-xo.html
Also, you often use the phrase "Heads Up Display", Just a reminder that it's a Head Up Display.
Cheers from Vancouver, Canada.
Swap out the exhaust use magnaflow mufflers ittyl prolly sound amazing
Howd u get that German patch killn Natzis?
Maserati knocked it out of the park with this car, learned from their (few) mistakes with the last gen GT, another timeless design. You gotta figure that its target consumer is someone who already owns a bonafide supercar and this is more of a daily driver, so I am not the least bit surprised by the price tag, but as you said it makes sense and is reasonable when put into perspective. I think the more surprising fact is that the MC20 is priced so low, wouldn't be surprised to see that rise in the near future.
I have the same "toe" issue in my 2013 GT Sport. #bigfeetproblems.
Anyway, reversed "GUM BALL 3000" patch on the jacket is quite an uncomfortable 😂
What watch is that, Matt? Very striking dial color.
@@donkeymarco that really sounds like it’s just creating more resistance for the other side to overcome
80% depreciation by 2025
14:19 min - 😉👍🏾
That Grand Seiko is gorgeous!
I look forward to seeing these for sale used in a few years, with 80% depreciation.
This guy’s old videos with people’s rides were so much better.
Beautiful car, but wish it was still a V8 RWD. That motor sounded so good.
It’s such a shame Maserati de-values their brand by making watches
Can you believe they've had past partnerships with Bulgari and even Audemars Piguet? Who in their right mind decided it was a good idea to drop their premium partners?!?
I own an M8 and recently started thinking about getting something different. There’s no way I will trade it for this car. Even if it was cheaper. $229 is insanity! New AMG GT looks promising though.
Thanks for the video! Really liked it
One thing about the weight, Italian auto makers often list the weight of their cars without fluids, so no oil, transmission fluid, etc.
That engine is waaay back there! I remember someone making a comment on a previous video saying you should invest in corner scales so that you can verify the claims of these manufacturers.
If YOU don’t think it sounds good in the US.. god help us over here on the OPF continent.. great video as always!
Part of that is being a V6. 6 cylinders in general being less impressive over there.
@@grievuspwn4g3 my daily Macan Turbo 2.9 V6 sounds infinitely better than that Maserati unit. It sounds just as shit in the MC20
@@grievuspwn4g3 it goes without saying that an 8, 10 or V12 unit will sound better. I'm fortunate enough to have owned examples of each, Ferrari F12, Huracan EVO, Land Rover V8 (rest modded 2014 model 4.8 V8) and Mercedes V6 in a '07 CLK 350 sport (this humblest of Mercedes proving beyond doubt that a V6 can sound good!).
Currently pipedreaming about a zero performance/all luxury version of this car badge engineered into a Citroën/DS, Stellantis sister brands of Maserati
better than FCA
It's a shame depreciation hits Maseratis so hard. This is such a beautiful vehicle but no way would I pay retail price.
I can’t wait until these are worth the same as a CPO Camry 😂
The maintenance costs don’t depreciate
hold your breath
Turbos equal death, especially for maserati no more soul, no character, no sound, no fun, boring. 220k 🤣🤣🤣🤣 this thing should be 80k new, and within 4 years be going for 30k used. At least the used price will still be close to 40k in 4 years used, at that price its decent. They finally have a good interior n decent build quality but it doesnt matter due to the dead engine. If u engine swap it with cross plane crank version of the ferrari 458 v8 in the old gran turismo, which is one of the best sounding things ever created way better then even the ferrari, then it could be a masterpiece.
Very nice wrist watch. Is this maby a Grand Seiko SBGX337
I’m liking the full-beard look. Great review, as always!
Dunno. I’m thinking Ming the Merciless from the Flash Gordon movie…
Another enjoyable review. Is the Nettuno a development of the Alfa 2.9 QV?
That’s a good question. Maserati publicly insist it’s their own design, and other commenters on here have (incorrectly I believe) described it as a Ferrari V8 with 2 cylinders lopped off.
I seem to recall one of the respected and likely highly-informed UK journo’s (testing the MC20) mischievously noting that the engine’s quoted layout and internal dimensions were “not identical but remarkably similar, and who’s going to actually scientifically check these things?” to Alfas V6, so I’m inclined to go with that…
It has a different engines heads.
It depends on what You consider a different engine.
P.s.: These are overhead valves engines.
