I wouldn't allow someone to file deeply into a solid gold chain because you couldn't resell it to anyone after damaging it like that. Anything worth that much money would have a K stamp on it. If Pete maybe knew more about jewelry he would know that. Now old European jewelry doesn't always have karat stamps on their jewelry but it's usually the old stuff, not the newer jewelry.

@@getin3949Pete said it was stamped 18K but it didn’t look correct (23:30-23:40). Lots of fake jewelry is stamped. The value of that necklace is in the gold… scuffing it to test it marks up the necklace but doesn’t significantly decrease the value of the necklace because it only loses a tiny amount of gold. No one would buy 200g of 18K gold without testing it. And it absolutely could be resold after testing it which is why Pete is interested in it. It could be easily repaired, but again, the real value is the gold which can be melted down. The production of gold jewelry is cheap. It’s the value of the gold that makes them so expensive.

  • @skullsaintdead
    @skullsaintdead 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +308

What I always notice with the scammers, esp. the fake jewelry, is that they can't help but look anxious, as soon as you took the necklace, his hand goes up instinctively on the desk, ready to take it back and hide its fakeness, they're always ready to grab it and make an excuse as to why it's not adding up, or why they need to leave now... Nervous energy, man. They probably try out the shops first, to see if they can get max $$ for it, but the shops would refuse, making them feel dejected, so they just end up scamming their friends/family or even people online. Awful, despicable people.

I've twice had scammers driving SUVs pull up to me on the street claiming that they had to get home to Canada but they had lost their wallets and needed $150.00 gas money to make it home. If I'd give them the money, they offered to let me keep the heavy "gold" chains that they were wearing. (Would've been worth thousands if they had been real gold). A very common scam; what was troubling about it was that they had little kids in the car. Teach them young, I guess.

But he went to a Gold Buying Store and they didn't have enough money to purchase it, which story is it loan or purchase. What gold-buying place would not have the money for a real gold large chain, they would be jumping through hoops to buy that necklace.

@@KoharuUchihaK Do you really not understand what is problematic with someone receiving money from the Government so that they can survive during a crisis and they immediately spend the majority of that large sum of money on a useless vanity item? Poor money management like that is one of the biggest reasons for multi-generational poverty, plus that isn't what people were intended to spend that stipend on - do you really think the government should be handing out money so people can buy gold chains?
Either way it's nonsense because he didn't actually do it, it's a fake chain that he probably got for $150 from some other scam artist. But acting like people are "insane" for thinking it's morally reprehensible to be spending your Covid stipend on a shiny thing to wear and making some weird claim about kids in Africa is pretty fucked up, mate. Because it's not really "their money" is it? It's money from the taxpayers that is intended to help people get by during an extremely tough time.
Anyway, I'm probably wasting my time. I see you've posted this a few times so you seem to truly think that someone spending thousands of dollars outside of their means on a necklace and then not having money to pay their phone bill is a perfectly reasonable situation so... I don't really know how to have a conversation with someone like that.

I disagree. He wanted to pawn it, not sell it. He even said so. Also, he was fine with him authenticating the gold until he was told that he had to "significantly scuff it." You can test gold with machines that are more accurate, and don't damage the gold. That's what coin shops use. If i had gold to sell, i wouldn't let him scuff my property either, especially if i expected to get it back, which is what he said.

    • @Robert-nu4vc

@@trekkiejunkno, he didn't want him to scuff it because he knew that once he scratched it for the acid test that it would come back fake. It's probably gold plated only. If he wanted to pawn it he would have taken it to a pawn shop which this is not a pawn shop and doesn't say pawn shop on the sign at all and it's not even known as a pawn shop and never was. He said pawn after he knew he was going to scuff it, because he figured if he made it seem like he was going to come back for it that he owner would just take it without checking it out. The guy with the gold is 100% a scammer. He needed money bad but refused to let it be checked out. He never initially said he wanted to pawn it. Why would they bother? You think other shop owners are that stupid? Nobody opens a shop like that without having the sense to test things before buying them. And when they typically pay 1/3rd the value of something; they can even make mistakes without it hurting too badly.

When a scammer give you a story about another shop not having enough money to buy the fake gold chain he is lying too you. Just look at the guy??? He screams scammer. Interpersonal communication psychology is the way to tell when someone is lying to you. Its not the words they use it their affect and body language.

Im always suspicious when somone brings in a kid to these kind of places. Like im assuming most of these people are trying to be manipulative and hoping you'll feel bad and give the kid a better deal. But then there are probably some people who are just trying to teach their kids how to interact and negotiate. Definitely a red flag though

I was in the jewelry business for a few decades. One scam I would see when buying supplies was these young scammers would come in and try to buy gold filled chains which is 1/20 12KT Gold which is by weight 1 part pure gold and 39 parts brass and copper. They would then buy 14K and 18KT clasps and put them on the gold filled chain. People would look at the clasp and see it's stamped 14KT and think the entire chain is 14KT. Most places, if they suspects something, would not sell supplies to scammers. It's pretty obvious when scammers come in, they have a certain look.

Right?! I think he even said “I didn’t spend my entire check on it as that’d be crazy”; so even less than $5k. Who wouldn’t then jump at $7k if he knew it was real-he could go buy another one and sell it again! 🤣
Fact is Pete just threw out a big number to get the guy excited and to convince him to let him test it. But the guy knew he was onto him and saved face by talking about loaning it or not wanting to scuff it up. 😂
He knew he wouldn’t be able to scam someone else with it if it were scuffed 😂

He wants you to offer him $300-400 as a loan and then they never come back to pick it up. He wasn't expecting to get 7000 out of you. A lot of shop owners greed gets to them and they think they're getting a steal for $300-400. Had you offered $300-400 for sale he would've taken it, he would've wanted you to say I'll take it without testing for $400

    • @TM-lq1qf

To be fair to the gold guy, he actually hesitated when you said you would have to scuff his gold chain "pretty significantly" in order to test it. Gold can be tested for purity without damaging it. It's done every day at coin shops with machines. He also seemed to indicate he wanted to pawn it, implying he wanted it back. So, i give him the benefit of the doubt, because i would absolutely not allow you to significantly scuff my gold just because you don't have the proper equipment.

Expressing that you'll take less for a loan is standard in gold chain short cons. It's done to lull the rube who comes to the same conclusion you have and the grifter still skates with way more money than their plated "gold" chain cost them. Words are cheap. They're completely worthless from a conman.
