    Thanks for posting this - have a blown-out frostfree, was wondering how it worked, since it only leaked when it was turned on, even with a huge rupture in the copper. Your video explained it very well, thanks!

    Aaaaahh!!!! Thank you! Never had to deal with this before as I'm a fairly new home owner . Mine was leaking really bad and flooded part of my yard! I took off the knob and removed that white plastic nut by barely turning it and was like "why is it leaking?!?!?" Lol! I watched this vid and realized I just had to tighten that nut. All fixed now!

    Thanks for the video. I've only used these a few times (concept is good) but got leaking from all but one (up around the top cap). Never took one apart to see why (just replaced it) but I've soured on them now. Looks like one of the sillcock's had a left hand thread? I don't think I would have picked up on that and figured it just wasn't going to come apart.

    @bielinskihouse All I can think of is that the sillcock was frozen at some point and the pipe was cracked. As a result, it could be preventing the handle from turning. Also, there could be some internal corrosion.

    Thanks, very helpful. I suddenly noticed a big leak coming from under the handle of my new frostless. The collar nut on the outside did need tightening, but the cause turned out to be back-pressure from the long hose that was attached, that was laying out in the sunlight on the lawn.

    Thanks for your video! Mine isn't leaking steadily, but I put a frost cover on it since we have freezing temps. I have noticed that sometimes there is a frozen drip on my siding. I will fully open the valve and let it run, then close tightly, and it stops, but then I still see that drip. I noticed the screw was loose, so I tightened that and tightened the handle. So far, no drips. Do you think it is something minor- like perhaps the nut or the small parts? I'd like to do it myself!

    That helped, but I have one frost free faucet that is leaking badly out the air valve on top of the faucet. Need to know how to take that apart/clean and/or replace the air valve assembly. I've had a plumber out to replace those air valves before, but I suspect there is a small rock caught in the assembly, would like to fix it myself if possible. Thanks!

    I can't find the manufactures brand of my 10yr old sillcock (outdoor tap) that I have which has this same leak. How do I confirm the packing gland size. Te current one that is failing does not look any worse for wear, is still thick and whole looking, but fairly soft to the squeeze. I tried placing a tight fitting round gasket in front of the original, hence two pieces. Made for a tight fit but still leaked. This sillcock is a 1/4 turn ball valve. The handle end is very similar to the tap in this video but does not have the reverse threading. Tightening too much makes it too difficult to turn the 1/4 turn valve. Any ideas on finding the right packing gland?

    I can't get to the water main to turn off the water supply like he did in the beginning of the video..... So, since the "on/off" for the water for the silcock is actually on the opposite side of the outside handle (inside the house), like he explains at the end of the video..... If I turn the outside handle to the "off" position like I've done hundreds of times, can I then remove the plastic handle by removing the middle screw to check the condition of the washer and whether or not the nut is loose without getting a TON of water (cause the main water supply is not off)?

  • @TheOldkid888
    @TheOldkid888 13 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    One of the main reasons that the cap on top (it is called the vacuum breaker) ends up leaking is because the hose was not removed before the cold weather arrived. The faucet should be grading towards the outside of the house to allow all the water to leave when it is turned off. A piece of wood under the valve on the inside of the house will ensure the faucet will drain properly....Have a great day.

  • @TenHanger
    @TenHanger 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    We had the EXACT same problem, the plastic packing nut was coming loose because it strips on the end threads. I simply tightened it to make the spigot leak-free again, but I imagine after too many people over-torque the valve in the open direction, it'll happen again. for more long-lasting solution, replace plastic piece with metal part.
    notice on his new assembly that piece is metal. manufacturer probably got too many faulty ones / complaints and was forced to upgrade the part.

    When outside frostfree faucets are leaking from where you attach the hose;the only reason for this is the washer is not pushing up tight enough against the seat to stop the water completely. The white nut is a packing nut that compresses the gland (he calls the washer) and that gland prevents water from coming out of the end of the faucet where the handle is located when the water is turned on. If your faucet won't shut off; your washer or seat or both are bad and have to be replaced.G.L.

  • @TheOldkid888
    @TheOldkid888 13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The washer he is talking about is called a packing gland.This has nothing to do with your water running if you turn the handle and it doesn't shut off.The seat is at the very end of the faucet inside the house and the stem has the washer on the end of it that meets up with the seat and turns the water off.The only time that gland will leak there is when you turn your water on.On top of the frost free faucet there is a vacuum breaker,it prevents the water from being syphoned back into the house

    • @trackerbab

      The repair shown will not stop a leaky faucet when it’s off, it will prevent water from leaking from the stem of the tap when open

  • @hifanman
    @hifanman 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If water reaches the outside washer the frost free Fossett is not doing its job and therefore can freeze. It’s the inside washer that needs to be changed. Tightening the exterior bolt probably only tightened the seat of the interior washer Therefore stopping your leak.

    You may have a faulty back flow preventer on the sillcock or maybe a washer has broken loose and is clogging the sillcock. Also, make sure that water to the sillcock is turned on. Are you sure there are no valves turned off in the basement that feed the sillcock.

    I am not sure if you can find a replacement for just that little white nut, or bushing as you referred to it. I understand you do not want to replace the entire sillcock due to all the work involved. It might be worth it to spend the $20 to $30 for a replacement sillcock and just use the nut. Though it seems like a high price to pay for a nut, it will be a heck of a lot less work than replacing the entire sillcock.

      @brianwilkinson4207 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Amith F remove the top cap/freeze plug and inspect the cap and faucet for damage. if there is none then your rubber seal has probably been compromised somehow or is missing. Take your cap to the hardware store and someone there will be able to find you a seal to replace the old one with. probably about 35 cents.

    • @buzoff4642
      @buzoff4642 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That cap pops off. Underneath, unscrew what you find, (careful, there are two parts to what you're unscrewing) clean them off and verify the rubber gaskets are clean and intact. If they have eroded, take it to a True Value or plumbing supply store and find gaskets to replace. Mine stopped leaking with a simple cleaning.

    • @HomeAdditionPlus

      Typically not. It's simpler most of the time to replace the entire sillcock.

    • @donaldsonre123
      @donaldsonre123 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      My top part was leaking and it was super simple to replace (took 5 minutes). I got an $8 replacement kit, popped the black top off, gently unscrewed the white plastic with channel lock pliers, screwed in the replacement white part, and popped the new black top on. The white plastic part, just like other interior plastic parts, just tend to eventually crack and that causes a leak. Try this before you buy a whole new sillcock. In my case, the reason for the leak was abundantly clear as soon as I popped off the black top (cracked white part).

    • @donaldsonre123
      @donaldsonre123 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      BTW, the replacement kit was in the exact same section of the hardware store, right under the shelf that the $35 sillcock was.

    Sillcocks/ballcocks dicks whatever you want to call them I have had nothing but trouble with them, spending a small fortune every time I have to replace one. the ones I get are not as simple to repair it has a screw and seal way up in the tubing and it costs around half the price of a new one just for a repair kit!! trouble with that is every time I have pulled one apart the screw was already out, usually a indication that the seat has a burr on it grabbing the seal turning the seal in turn the screw, there is NO way to get a deburr tool in there so you need a new faucet.
    seems to me the simplier way to repair these is just pull your arm back and swing as hard as you can, then go back to the hardware store pick up a 3/4 pipe nipple the length that you need (usually as long as that worthless piece of junk) then get a valve at lowe's
    www.lowes.com/pd_21500-34146-M74+3/4_1z0ycgf+1z10x9s__?productId=3353882&Ns=p_product_avg_rating|1&pl=1¤tURL=%3FNs%3Dp_product_avg_rating|1%26page%3D1&facetInfo=Sillcock%20valve
    AMERICAN VALVE 3/4-in Female Brass Sillcock Valve now only $5.36 plus tax of 'course got to hold it together somehow.
    just my two cents.
