    This is the ultimate way to break 80. There is no pressure on yourself to make those elusive 11 pars and 7 bogeys. Just a way to set small achievable goals during a round, focusing on achieving the very basics of golf: set up an approach, hit the heart of the green or miss it where you can get up and down easily and then make a mess of a few holes.
    When we go to the course and expect or desire par after par, we soon get derailed when a double bogey comes along. With my system illustrated here, I show you how to break 80 hitting just 6 greens in regulation, getting up and down 6 times and then screwing up the other 6 holes. It's the golf sidekick 666 system, players!
    Focus on the basics: tee shot to a place where you can hit a comfortable shot into the green. If you screw it up, just get to the next position to get onto the green. In other words just good golf course management.
    When you miss the greens, make sure you’re aiming at a place that would be a good miss. Allow yourself the easiest up and down possible. It goes without saying, as with all golf, PRACTICE your damn short game. Watch these videos on chipping, bunkers and putting:
    Chipping • How to Chip the Golf B...
    Bunkers • How to Get Out of Bunk...
    Putting • How To Putt on Bermuda...
    Commit to every shot 100% - not 95%, 100% This is vital and the only reason you mess up shots is because you’re not committed. And why are we not committed? Because we hit shots we aren’t confident in. And why do we do this? Because we don’t KNOW OURSELVES! We must play shots we know in any form of golf and this 666 system encourages that and by pairing good golf course management with shots you know and trust, your scores will plummet.
    When thinking about how to break 80 in golf, do a golf audit of your game. What are you good at? What shots can you reliably hit? What shots are you awful at? Keep the good, reject the bad. Play with what you have and only hit that shots players.
    I don’t even want to hear any whining about discrepancies in distance between you and me. Didi doesn’t hit it as far as me and he breaks 80 on the regular because his course management is so spot on along with knowing his distances to the yard. You should be playing off the right tees for your length and you must COMMIT COMMIT COMMIT to what you know and can do!
    Go forth, conquer and have fun, playas!!

    As a guy who breaks 80, I like what you've got here. You absolutely nailed it with putting the focus on the process, not the result. That is the real key to great golf. And patience. And perspective. And decent hands don't hurt, either. My "rules" for myself are simple. Drive the ball in play, use a wedge no more than once on a hole, no more than 2 putts on a green (maybe once), and make everything inside of 6 feet. If I do that, it's a nice round. The number will take care of itself. But to begin to play any of those strokes with consistency, you must remember to keep your focus on the process. As you touched on with your confidence level on a particular par 3 in the video. That's a golf mind in its most ideal state. Confident, and focused on the process. Keys to success. Love this video for those trying to break through.

      @@GolfSidekick Did I mention the word "process"? Haha. But seriously, thank you for this video. You see a lot on youtube. Some good, some not so good. This was a refreshing watch, and I'm certain it can really help A LOT of people. For every 4 handicap out there, there's dozens of 10s and 12s with the same talent, or even greater talent. The difference is what's going on, or not going on, between the ears. Great work, keep it up!

    • @winstonsmith11
      @winstonsmith11 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rambler1277 Yes, I get your point. It's not that simple. But that's more of a measure I'll do after the round as to where I need to improve. I'm not thinking about that while I'm playing. It really is about the focus required for each shot, and what you are actually trying to do over the ball. I'm not trying to hit a fairway, I'm going through the process it takes to make a swing. I'm not trying to hole a 5 footer, I'm doing my best to make a solid stroke. It's about removing yourself from the result and focusing on the work that's in front of you.

      You say focus on process not outcome and then you specify two outcomes 6 x up and downs and 6 x GIR!!! Pressure!!! If you wish to improve by process then get a more consistent address routine, a more consistent strike feel and stay positive and focussed through all 18 holes!

    Hi Matt, I watched your video last night and followed your advice. Went out this morning and hit 9 greens in regulation and had 6 up and downs. With one triple bogey I managed to hit 78. Appreciated the difference in my shot making when I concentrated on the process and not the outcome. I tend to fade the ball and was able to play to that strength rather than trying to do things I wasn't comfortable with. Played a match with friends I play regularly with at the same time and won that as well. The best part was regardless of where my tee shot ended up, the focus on getting my next shot in the best place to get it up and down or hitting the green was so much easier then trying to par the hole or get a birdie. Keep up the good work.

    I was shooting 90-105 very inconsistently and had been like this for a almost 5 years since I started. I started the way of the playa during a tournament a month ago where I needed 88 average in three days to win I did 89 90 and 93. Didn't win but finally understood the way of the playa. Since the tournament I haven't shot above 90. Yesterday I had a game with heavy bets with people I play with every week. The best of them normally scores 75-80 and gives me a 15 stroke advantage. I watched this video looking to break 80 (previous record 87). I did 79 yesterday. I thank you not only for the golf advice but for all the life advice and general coolness that you teach us.

    Not sure I've ever posted on one of your videos or not but I've watched many because I was on a quest this year to get into the 80's myself. I shot a 79 two years ago and the agony of not reaching that rarified air again has been bugging me every since. I watched all of your videos about how to break 80, how to break 75 missing most of the greens etc. On a recent trip to Calgary I shot an 80 and 81 and and 82, any of which could have been a 79 or 78 with just a couple less mistakes. Finally, yesterday, it all came together and I shot a 77 at a course over 6000 yards. Your videos and emphasis on simplifying the approach to shooting lower and on focusing on the process is what helped me over the edge. I waivered a bit mid round (I was 2 under after 6!) but instead of getting down on myself and filling my head with negative thoughts I simply focused on the next shot and the next shot etc. I didn't strike the ball as well as I did in Calgary either and it rained like heck the day before and I got no roll on the fairways but even when I was 200 away from the green instead of my intended 140 I simply focused on executing the shot and staying out of trouble. I was only in one trap all day because I played away from trouble and to the safe part of the green.
    Just wanted to say thanks and keep up the good work!!!

    1. Your videos are pretty much the best on TH-cam. 2. Cool AF accent. 3. The brain is incapable of flatulence. It is, however capable of expressive language. Use your powers of expression Matt!4. I have now broken 80 on 4 occasions. All since 30 July, 2018. In accordance with Matt's advice, I never tally up my score after the front nine. In fact, I never tally it at all until the round is over. Each time I broke 80, I had one double bogey, a bunch of bogies, a lesser number of pars, and a couple of birdies. Seventy-nine isn't a very pretty round! Remember this lesson, all you folks aspiring to break 80 for the first time. Don't rip up your scorecard and become disheartened after you make a double bogey! You may very well catch fire and shoot two under on the last five holes.

And when I've took a look on my score card after the round I realized I played exactly what you demand: 6 GIR, 6 up and downs, 6 birthday holes. It's magic. And the whole time I've had only one thought in my mind: just play what you can play. No trick shots, no risk, no ball shaping. And the result was amazing. Thanks very much. Hope I can keep the spirit and carry it on to my next rounds.

    Ripper vid yet again Matt. After shooting my best of 88 not long ago, I lost my way because I stopped using my process which was simple. "doesn't matter how far it goes, just get it towards the hole straight". Which lends itself to your 'find a club you hit well and use it' and the splitting the shot into two shorter ones instead of going for glory.
    Golf always wins, we just have to learn how to manipulate it when we can.

    Hi Matt, I generally don't comment on anything online but I felt the need to say thanks for your videos as (like a few other people on here) one of my big aims for the year was breaking 80 and I finally managed it this passed weekend by shooting a 78 (par 70). The vids you've made on course management and chipping have been a huge help but the biggest was definitely this video. All I kept saying to myself all the way round was 'hit greens, get up & down, hit greens, get up & down'. I was +7 after 6 holes but because I wasn't counting my score like I have done in the past I didn't realise and went -2 through the next 8 holes making birdies on a short par 4 and getting up and down on a par 5. Keep up the great work, it's brilliant watching content from an amateur rather than a pro as it's much more relatable. Can't wait for your next video!

    I took gas yesterday by thinking of end score...Wasn't playing well at all, hit 3 fairways and 4 greens after 14 holes, yet was 1 under for the round. Started thinking about holes 16,17 and 18 as they are a difficult finishing trio. Teed up on 15, par 3, and pulled it left. failed to get up and down...onto 16th tee. Par 5, and on my best day I can get up in 2. Pulled out the big gun, sliced it into the trees, took two to get out. Still had 280 to the flag, so hit a hybrid lay up. 5th shot was a fluff but managed to get up and down after for 7. 17th is a straight par 4, 400m, Playing into the wind. Big gun came out again, went left, again chip out, missed green left walked off with 6. caned a tee shot on last hole, but still 196 left to flag....hybrid, 2 chips , 2 putts...6. So lost 7 shots in last four holes for 78. Ended up coming second in event, by 2 shots....should of hit hybrid off tee on 16 and the frustration of double wouldn't have gone with onto hole 17.......

    Thanks for the content! I tried a variation of this system yesterday and it worked great. I regularly track greens, putts, and fairways. I'm modifying my targets to 8-greens 8-fairways and 4 up and downs. Yesterday I played 9 using the methodology and I hit 5 fairways, 6 greens but only had one up & down. I'm a 6 handicap so breaking 80 isn't super rare but it's not as common as I'd like either, especially in competition. I honestly think this system can help me. I appreciate it. It also showed a GLARING need for me to work on up & downs. Just tracking the data could show me that as well but there's definitely a difference in having a target number of up & downs that creates a different mindset.

    This system is outstanding.
    I broke 80 today for the first time this season.
    I checked my card and had EXACTLY:
    6 up and downs
    6 greens hit
    6 “birthday holes” (5 of them were 3 putts)
    I was aware of this system from watching this video last night but wasn’t actively thinking about it while playing.
    I stole 2 birdies and played some of the best golf I’ve played in 2 years, despite the 3 putts (very frustrating).
    Thank you for giving me a new outlook on the game and a completely different approach to course management!

      Its a kinda magic!
      The main point as you have found is to get yourself into positions that allow the stats to take care of themselves. Its not about shooting for the 666 but about being in the right position to achieve them all and still relax with those 6 poopoo holes. Great job playa

      That's what people don't realize when they dismiss the idea in the video. They think you won't ever improve at golf and golf isn't fun like this bla bla bla.
      but when you relax because you take pressure off yourself, you score better and start making birdies and more pars with less big blow ups.

    It looks like your chip shot swing is pretty fast. While that is fine for a full shot, it can lead to inconsistencies when chipping. Most important part of it is to accelerate the club through the ball. But a quick backswing can lead to pull-chips. Most of the videos I have watched appear to look like you miss your chips to the left of the hole, which is likely caused by that quick backswing. Cheers mate! Great video!

    This is excellent Matt. I'm starting to leave my inner 'Billy-Big-Bollocks' at home more often and hitting easier shots after watching your vlogs. Tried this yesterday and shot my best ever score, 75 (par is 67). Thank you! I wasn't even playing my best golf but was fully focused on just getting the ball in the hole. I ended up with 8 GIR, 4 up and downs plus my 6 birthday holes. Only major wobble was double bogey six on 17th when I started to think that I was on for a really good score, I normally get no worse than a five on that one. Now I am thinking that breaking 70 might just about be do-able.

    • @GolfSidekick
      @GolfSidekick  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sir, if you can think it you can create a plan to get it. Thank you for your comment and well done on graduating head of the class! Now once you let go of the outcome of a great score and just continue focusing on getting that little pellet into that little hole, there will be fewer wobbles.
      Today is a great day and you should celebrate. This is a perfect example of how the system will work but not necessarily 100% to the 6-6-6, but going with that mindset means you free your mind to achieve remarkable things.

    8 GIR, 4 saves. 2 birdies to offset 2 DBs. No three putts. And voila: 78. First sub-80 round since at least 2004.
    Key point of the round was after making DB on 13 (fat approach in the water), I stayed focused on the process and not the outcome, and calmly drained a 20-foot birdie on 14. It was a great feeling walking on the green on 18 knowing I had three putts to make par for 79.

    Great video, I shot 79 earlier this year but have recently crept back towards the mid 80's! Its usually two stupid holes that cost me always on the back nine. I'm looking at my concentration levels a looking at perhaps taking on some caffeine or a sugar bomb to keep me focused.

    • @GolfSidekick
      @GolfSidekick  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paul Houghton
      I would advise against the coffee. Increases cortisol levels. The stress hormone. Increases heart rate and sweating. Have a low sugar snack that will keep you satiated. Nuts and seeds are great. Boiled eggs. Sugar bombs are good for the last three holes maybe. You dont want a sugar crash after a 9 hole snack. Stick with the higher protein and fat snacks.

    • @paulhoughton5431
      @paulhoughton5431 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Golf Sidekick thanks for that, I do take a low carb protein shake with every round. I’ll bin the caffeine idea & try your nuts and sugar bomb idea. Hopefully it will stop the brain fart!!👍

    • @GolfSidekick
      @GolfSidekick  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would scrap the protein shake my good man. Consume some natural foods and be satisfied longer with less farting. I am sure there is sugar in those shakes. I have a problem on the back nine too and mine comes from flailing concentration due to lack of sleep. I will be exploring this deeper as I go forward. I am tired of leaking strokes when I have a good score going. Part of it is probably an expectation that we will screw up. I am going to try breaking the second 9 into 3 three-hole courses and minimize the task instead of seeing it as another 9 holes to.mess up. I will report back with my findings in future videos.

    I'd just like to break 90 regularly. Playing 25 years, can bag 4-5 pars a round, the occasional bird, but can't keep the triples and worse off the card. Par one hole 7 the next. Swing just will not hold together for 18. I've tried it all, short game practice, leaving the driver at home... I got good technique overall, but my issue is confidence and consistency. Haven't found a pro yet that can help me with either.

      Agree that consistency (or the lack of it) is the curse of every mid/high handicapper. A guy I play with plays off 3, just walks up to the ball and hits it. Last Thursday he scored a gross 64 including an ace. He uses so-called 'crappy' Dunlop balls because he loves them and nobody ever picks them up.

      Yep, some guys in our group have 'terrible' swings no one would ever teach. One is like Didi, I swear he'll hurt himself. But he smashes it and finds loads of greens. He still has a few bad holes every round, but not enough to stop him winning regularly.

    • @norms4831
      @norms4831 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Same boat here Hugh, but I do have an 89 on the card this year, but would like that to be more regular for sure. Watch all of Golf Sidekick vids and hit up his website, lots of great content there for us mid/high handicappers. Swinging really nice here Matt! Great advice as usual. I'm trying to learn this lesson of easy swings with long clubs, feels like the way forward.

      Aw mate I'm truly honoured, thanks. I use your club-splitting advice all the time, starting to get regular Stablefords in the mid-30s as a direct result of it.

    Great idea. I'm going to try that the next couple of rounds. Btw... Did you pick up your ball on hole 15? Looked like you were reaching for it. No gimmes in stroke play!

      LOL, I left it about 8 inches short. Was a matchplay team game: best score vs best score, 2nd best vs 2nd and that first putt was for the half on my end so I lost the hole. Not gonna miss an 8 incher, I promise!

      Double triple quadruple what ever happens playa. It will happen. Then move on

    Hey Matt, I am new to your channel. Do you do these full time or do you have another job? I am very curious as it is a perfect place to play golf full time!

    This is a good simplified process based system. IMHO, in order to score well in golf, you must:
    - Get off the tee and keep it in play. You have to put yourself in position to get the GIR. You don't need to hit it 300 yards every drive (although it would be great), but you do need to keep it in play.
    - Make putts inside 5 feet. Make the up and down. Make sure you can lag those long 2 putts. No 3 putts.
    - Score on par 3's. You either need a GIR or up and down on all par 3's. Save the bogeys for the other holes.
    - You need to be consistent from ~175 and in. From ~100 and in, you need to be rock solid. You either have to hit the green or put yourself in a position for an up and down.

    Great video. I think you need to give yourself a few extra strokes or play from the tips though because that entire course looks like one big green.

      Steve Peltier most of my future videos are from the tips. When I play with friends in these matchplay games, I like playing in the same tees as them otherwise a bit antisocial. New videos of me coming soon but I have some other players to feature before then who can offer some real value. Yeee haw

    My brother had another similar way to break a sub 80 round into easily remembered segments. No double bogeys, no sixes or higher. If you can do that 79 will happen more often.

      The doubles KILL breaking 80 more than anything

      It's a great drill, I've seen variations using string, but the yardstick / ruler is easier to set up. Just drop it down.
