Just shot a 101 and this is my second year golfing ever. I'm understanding the mechanics of this game more so than most. Number one problem I'm working on now is I have a tendency to hit the ground before the ball with my irons because I'm leaning back in my back swing for some reason im having trouble keeping straight and leaning forward in my follow through.
Long time fan of your channel. My brother (age 35) has been taking golf seriously for the last year now. He has always been a naturally good golfer but has improved significantly just from playing regularly. However he is really struggling to break 80. He's had a few occasions where he needed to birdie the 18th hole, only to par it. Long shot but do you guys still do lessons in person or is it all through your online programme? Im sure he'd be willing to drive up to you guys.
this is great information guys!!! I have an example of not letting my emotions ruin my round. After a good front nine 39, I was excited about the prospect of breaking 80, my tee shot on 10 was pulled into a hazard. One the way to the ball, I started to have that feeling of "here we go.. starting to self destruct.". But, I quickly said to my self: That shot is in the past, this is a par 5, see if you can still squeak out a par. Lo and behold, I hit a sensible iron over the water to about 160. Then on the approach, to about 15 feet behind the stick. Focused hard, and sunk it! Totally accredited to the positive frame of mind and having the sense to quell the negative thoughts!
100% agree with this. A few of my friends are just starting to get into golf and this is something I've tried to explain to them, no good following a bad shot with another because you've lost your head, it's not always easy but it's key if your going to have a decent round.
Hey guys! I played a brand new course and broke 90 today using several of the tips I’ve spent countless hours watching. Definitely a huge accomplishment! I managed to do it using only irons, literally zero woods or hybrids. Piers and Andy are the best thing to ever happen to my golf game 🤙💯
Controlling emotions is huge for me! Not only do I play better when I’m in control of my emotions but I enjoy being on the golf course more. Thanks guys!
Same- I get overly offset when there's a slow group in front of me, or a group behind me hitting into me when I'm waiting for a group in front of me- end up whiffing my 3 wood :D
Thanks for this... I broke 80 for the first time March 4, 2018 with a 78 at The Crossings in Glen Allen, VA. 34 putts, 14 fairways, and 11 GIRs. You guys are very helpful!
Your videos are extremely helpful! Your chipping video around the green brought my score down from the low 90's to the mid 80's. Lowest score to date is an 84. Need some help to get down to 79. I'll keep watching your videos, as they are a great teaching tool as long as a person is willing to put aside their pride and admit they need help.
I think tip 1 got me to 80.....now I need to break 80 more often. I hover between 80-85.....Think I took this tip too early lol. Changed my game immensely. Your scores really get lower when you can simply advance and stay out of the woods and water. Tip 2....I have to work on. Great video.....makes you realize what you actually have to work on.
I’m 15. I shoot low to mid 80s very consistently, I have been trying to fix all 5 of these tips before I even saw the video without realizing it. My biggest problem is that I loose focus between the 13 and 16 ish holes. It’s not that their any harder I just loose focus and don’t think about each shot enough. I’m going to start trying to think about every shot being the most important and in turn hopefully being able to stay focused the whole round.
If your are getting a little tired towards the end of your round, you should work on your overall condition. Only if you are fit through all 18 holes you can keep your focus at a high level. All the pros work at their fitness and their strength for that reason.
Frank Schumacher - thank you for your advice. I very much agree with you because my parents just bought me a golf cart in June and since then I have became lazy and haven’t walked enough. I am addicted to golf and play every minute I can so from like 3:30 ( after school and during high school golf ) until about 6 or when it’s dark I am out playing. And on the weekends I’m at the course for at least 8 hours a day. ( Lol I’m at the course right now even ) anyway I would say I play about 15 rounds a week on average and I only walk during practice ( because we have too ) but when I prepare for a tournament I make sure to walk 18 holes daily. Also to any parents out there who are thinking about getting their kid a cart I would strongly recommend as soon as possible if you have the financial opening for that investment. Me and my best friend each have carts now and we have dropped our scores from mid 90s to high 70s because we got to get so much time on the course. It’s really amazing how much of a difference that practicing on the course gives us then in the range. Anyway thanks again and to any kids who want a golf cart show this to your parents they might change their minds lol. But honestly tho if I didn’t have my cart I wouldn’t be able to golf as much and I wouldn’t be as good.
I started golfing last year shooting around 130, I set my goal to break 100 this year. I finished this season shooting between 95 -100. It's been fairly consistent. Best score being a 92. Winter season sucks! I need to break 90 before the snow falls! Thanks dudes!
finally breaking 90 consistently. Onto 80 baby! Thanks for the tips as always been watching since i started taking golf more serious 2 years ago. Used to just slam beers and have a good time but now its actually amazing to see the progress week to week. Best channel on youtube by far thanks again guys!
Nicely done. When I am struggling, I try to 1: Not lose a ball (penalty) 2: No miss hits (duffs, shanks), 3: No 3 putts. That can usually save a few strokes with just a little focus, defensive golf and course management.
I commented on the last video on how to lower your scores about being a 3.7 HC who doesn't always take my time on every shot. After watching your video, I went out yesterday actively doing everything in the video and shot a 74. Definitely staying tuned to the rest of the series.
Johnny Miller was once asked the difference between shooting 72 and 66. His answer, "Six putts that miss by less than a 1/2 inch." He actually held up his fingers to show the distance.
I managed to shoot a 73 a few weeks ago. I'm a subscriber to your channel and you guys are so knowledgeable on the swing and the mechanics and components of the golf swing. You have definitely helped me with the video tutorials and instructions you post on your channels. You guys are awesome. Keep up the great work and thank you! :)
Great work gents. Shot an 89 the other day for the first time in 10 years. I took several years off from golf and these videos have really helped me get back on track quickly!
Thanks for the video guys. We weekend golfers are not that consistent enough so having a game plan depending on the course will definitely give us an edge. I have been planning my rounds for the longest time and doing this, I have dropped my handicap lower even if I play usually once a week.
Yeah, I definitely agree with the pitching tip. A lot of golfers I know who shoot in the 80s are fine off tee, decent with irons, but can't ever get up and down. They pitch/chip the ball waaaaay past the hole or chunk them. Let's say you hit 9/18 GIR. Assume your putting is good and you 2-putt those 9 greens; that's 9 pars. The other 9 holes where you miss the green, if you can just get up and down on 4 of them, that's only 5 holes left that you don't make par on. Keep those to bogeys and you break 80.
Hey guys, thanks so much for all your tips. It’s really helping my game and I’m looking forward to taking these keys out with me this week and Breaking 80 👍🏼
Congrats on the sponsorships. School starts tomorrow and I have football so I'm worried about loosing everything I gained this summer. My goal when I started golfing this summer was to hit 40 on 9. Today was my first time hitting 40.
I'm a 12 year old who has broke 80 but only once but I go play nine every time I play nine I shoot like 40 41 on an okay 9 or in the 30's on my good 9 if you want to know how to break 80 work on your mental game last night I went out and played after reading this book golf is not a game of perfect and it helped I only played the par 3 course and I shot 28 playing bad I thought ballstriking wise I play every day for like 6 or so hour depending if it's a weekday or weekend and this has helped more than going to the range and trying to fix the swing have confidence in your swing guys
so will wearing the right shoes and playing with the right clubs and the right balls. Don't take my word for it, just ask Titleist, Adams, TaylorMade, any of the top equipment-makers...
Love these videos guys. I watched tour video on how to break 100. I had never broke 90 before and after watching that video I shot a 77 on a pretty tough course. Thanks guys. I'm hoping this video will help me stay consistently under 90.
Keeping the emotions in check is a good one. Normally I shoot low to mid 80s. Had a rough round this past week. The front nine was awful. I don't think I've ever played that terribly in recent memory. I shot a 49. I couldn't hit a decent shot. And I was getting really frustrated and angry. The back 9 didn't start so well either. Started with a 7! So, I had to compose myself. Took a few deep breaths and refocused my thinking. The last 8 holes were infinitely better after refocusing. Which lead to playing better golf. Strung a few pars together and putted for eagle once. Ended up with a birdie. And finished the game with a 91. Which wasn't so bad considering I was sitting at 56 after 10 holes. At any rate, thanks for the tips! Always enjoy the videos.
The key to getting below a 10 handi is getting it up and down at least 50% of the time. Sure, make some putts. But if you can still make par (or bogey) on half of the 10 greens you miss in reg, you can shoot sub 80 a lot.
Love these videos. Always worth a watch. I'm definitely fitting the demographic now - bought the M1 Driver and an Audi this year.... Now if I could just break 80 consistently like these guys.
Thanks guys! All of these have been very useful and I am consistently scoring 80-84...sometimes under 80😀btw just bringing it out...from where I watch the video the audio and the video are unmatched. I wonder if everyone has this issue or its just me🤣
Great video, course strategy is very important. I broke 80 recently and used an iron off alot of the tees to take the risk out of the shot. Better to be shorter and on the fairway then longer and out of bounds.
I watched tips to breaking 100 even though I never really needed that but still watched it and watched best tips to break 90 and now this video which is tiles to break 80 and guess what I shot a 75 today!!! 4 birdies, 3 bogeys and 1 Quadruple bogey! That quadruple was bad but is my most difficult hole but I didn’t let my emotions get to me and I did just well!!!! you guys are amazing!!!!
Really like your videos, guys. Very practical and your positive attitude is really encouraging. I break 80 pretty regularly but my attitude needs work! I am going to try to make some red circles!
I'm 72, started playing golf when I was 50, I weigh 50Kg (110lbs), 1m65 (5'6). I hit a 5 wood 225 yards off the tee and hit 78 last week. It is all about timing, not size, strength, etc.
Thank you Andy and Piers, I put the tips to break 90's its works, I am averaging 85 at the moment! I shall try out tips to break 80's especially the emotionally tips' as my golf buddies swear and discuss bad holes which in turn affects me game, i will try to ignore their comments!
Andrew Levy get a note book, and track stats (driving accuracy, putting, GIR, sand saves and scrambling etc), and figure out where you are consistently losing shots. Work on the weakness that you find. I think if your shooting as low as your saying your probably pretty good at all aspects of the game, but have one small issue in your game
fantastic video as always. As a guy who took himself from 20 handicap to 8, some of my experiences. Pitching is HUGE for your score, and, very few teachers can teach it!!! it took me 5 instructors before i learned to pitch. But once i got it, wow, the scores dropped! also course management is big. Teeing off with long iron or hybrid when there is trouble.
I use google earth to make a rough version of a planner. You can measure different distances and make notes in your own notebook, and you can draw your own maps of the hole. If you plan on playing a place regularly you can make you own little topo book with details for the course. Every time you play update a hole or two in your little book and after a while you will have a great planner for the course.
Failing that, if you don't mind using your phone during the round, there are free apps around that will give you a pretty good representation of a course guide. I use Golfshot, but there are man others out there that will achieve the same thing.
What you convey is to apply proper course management and to improve in areas where you may be weak. That is what most golfers who want to improve do in any event. When I played my best golf I was on the driving range every afternoon after work. You have to hit your irons well to go low and you have to play at least once a week over a long period of time. And you have to have a shot shape.
I break 90 on a regular basis. Breaking 80....very hard. I've come close a few times but from what I see, putting and getting up and down is the key. When I shoot low 80's, my putter and wedges are doing well for me. Having a fairway finder driver shot off the tee is vital as well.
1 tip i would add to that (that works for me)...never add up ur score until after the 18th green. I really focus on this because if i know i am playing well (or not so well) the pressure builds up..if u go out in 43 it puts ur back 9 under pressure...if you go out in 37 again u think u should break 80 but the pressure builds...i see my playing partners adding up their score (its hard not too) and the pressure building and then bad things happen to their swings/their decision making. Golf is a war of 18 battles and its never over till u have fought the last battle. 👍
You guys should go a video about tracking stats. Like a scorecard video where you break down how to keep track of distances of each club, your missed greens, putts, etc. And then how to process those stats into practice time
Thanks Andy and Piers, i love these videos. I'm only 15 years old and broke 75 today, because of your videos. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Please make more like this :)
Great stuff. The dead hand wedge is impossible for me though. Requires the body and legs to be synced perfectly because the hands can't react to recover from a poor tempo or position.
Hey guys, long time watcher, I was wondering what your thoughts are on the "hinge and hold" chipping and pitching tactic? Phil Mickelson swears by it, and says any other style of chipping is "crazy". Yet here you guys advocate the more pendulum style of chipping, with a mostly shoulder based swing, and "dead hands" as you called it. For a player trying to break 80 consistently, which do you think would be a better strategy? Thanks guys, great video!
Hey Ken, I asked the same question a couple of weeks ago and the guys actually made a video covering it, called "pro secrets to an amazing short game".. although they still don´t recommend the hinge and hold, I´ve been having some great rounds recently and playing well inside my previous handicap. Here´s the link; th-cam.com/video/A4PzLJoYTGk/w-d-xo.html
The "hinge and hold" method used by Phil is great for Phil, but it's something you need to spend hours practising to maintain. The timing has to be on point, and your ball striking has to be consistent. There's not too much room for error and the bad shots with H+H are A LOT worse than the bad shots with this method. Most of us "hobby golfers" would be much better off using the technique they showed you here - the ball will finish on the green more often.
Not sure they recommended less wrist on this video other than to say if you haven't got much time to practice it's a more reliable method. No way is right or wrong if it's consistent.
the app 18birdies replaces all your course planners and tells you your distances with gps. I've been using it the last 2 rounds and it's helped keeping track of my distances and chosing the right club
I think the better we get, the less inclined we are to use driver. In the past, I never would have considered not using driver on a par 5. Last year, I played three consecutive 5 wood shots on a par 5 to land it in the middle of the green, and each shot was different: like a choked down driver off the tee, like a utility hybrid out of the rough, and like a mid-to-long iron from the fairway.
So, hit it in a nice spot off the tee, chip it very close to the hole, ace your puts.... i stopped after these tips... This is gold, i do those three tips alone and i am ready to sweep the PGA tour! I never would have thought of that, i was always trying to hit it into the trees and in the water. Wait, why stop there? How to be a millionaire: Get to convenience store, pick winning lottery numbers, pay for the ticket, win the lotto. Nice tips!
Here are 5 of my own tips for breaking 80: (1) hit the driving range at least 2 times per week, and hit 200 balls, and take some chipping and putting practice while you are there. (2) practice a little out of the sand, because you cannot neglect that, and know the correct technique for getting out of the sand reliably. (3) take a lesson if your balls are not going straight or if it only sometimes feels like you are swinging good and making good contact. (4) don't do anything stupid on the course, like try to hit a ball 300 yards over a lake when you cannot hit a shot like that but one out of 10 times. (5) don't try to make birdies on the green, just lag balls up to the hole, and if they come up short sometimes that is better than rolling the ball 10 ft. past the hole and making a 3 putt on the hole.
I've broken 80 only twice in my life, and that was 11 years ago when I was 17. My decision making is pretty poor at times, I always forget to consider those other elements of the game.
This video is really for the low 80s player. If your high 80 or 90s your goal should be to consistently shoot 84 or less. Tip 1 is great but to put that into action you need to be able to confidently hit shots. All the strategy in the world doesnt matter if you cant pull off the shot. If you plan a 180 yard 6 iron lay up and then chunk or slice it because of poor ball striking your looking at bogey city real quick. Tip to break 80 is become a solid ball striker.
One of the tips I've seen from another pro on alignment is that we don't all see the ball the same. By that, I mean that having your eyes directly over the ball doesn't work for everyone. A lot of people, when they walk up to a shot that they've lined up, feel like it doesn't look right and subconsciously push or pull it. By figuring out where they need to keep their head and eyes so that a properly aligned putt looks correct, they can get rid of that subconscious reaction and sink more putts.
Hi Guys. I have seen allot of videos on Breaking 90, 80 etc. I am shooting in the low 70's but my goal is to play even par or in the 60's. Any tips videos on that? Allot of videos and tips are for the mid to high handicappers, would be great to see some tips for the lower/scratch handicappers. Any thoughts?
I hit my driver about 210-240 with slice/fade, I'm not positive on this or many of my club distances. I struggle hitting irons far but I've been trying to fix this. But I've still gone out and shot a 41 not long ago. That's my best round ever! I just figure what if I had all that stuff down and made a few more putts? Consistency is key to good scores. I faded a drive about 210 on a par five, then 3 wood to about 110 yards from green, I played an 8 irons and landed 9 feet from the hole to make birdie. KNOWING YOUR GAME IMPROVES SCORES, also, knowing you might hit a bad one in your game helps. Now I hit 8 irons 130 at least, but I don't always hit consistently with it because it ranges 125-150 and I shoot high forties to low fifties often. IM A GOOD EXAMPLE

#6. Be sure to be on a course without sh*t greens.
Jacob Munsell bad language, good point
1. Make putts
I’m not capable of that sir
Polirsh that’s too true.

Breaking 80 is ALL about the Short Game!
Marshall Jameson yep. Need to get it up and down more often than not
to me its about not bombing any drives into the out. shortgame is already strong enough :/

I almost broke 80 for the first time today, been golfing for 3 months. Decided to get an 8 on the final hole
sounds like you cheat lol
Watched this clip last night, as a 10 handicapper I just shot 75 off the stick. This lesson helped heaps!

I'm still waiting on the simple tips on how to break 60
Any putts closer than 20 feet is a give me.
Indeed
Rule #1: any length putt is good if you've already putted it once haha
Play 9 holes...simple 😉
tom young I’d make sure that’s a pencil with an eraser lol
What helped me break 90 was consistent chipping and having a mental game. I stopped caring about prior and future shots

Playing from the right tee box will help you break 80.
so will wearing the right shoes and playing with the right clubs and the right balls.
Don't take my word for it, just ask Titleist, Adams, TaylorMade, any of the top equipment-makers...
I've heard if you're not willing to quit your job and/or risk divorce, breaking 80 is impossible.
Who cares about marriage when you have golf?
Then you better find a wife that likes to play golf.
It's possible, you just need to go check out the videos on this awesome channel called Golf Sidekick!
Not true.
I'm married, and I brake 80 twice everytime I play 18 holes.
Wowww... didn't expect MY MAN to be on THIS side of TH-cam!@@GolfSidekick
Shot 79 on Saturday! First time under 80 and it feels great! Keep up the great tips!
Thanks for watching Kevin that's great to hear!
The last thing I broke on the golf course was my 5 iron. I guess tip 4 is aimed at people like me
Thanks for this Andy and Piers! Please do a workout/fitness series!
why?
why not?
We have one coming very soon John.
Meandmygolf Great! Looking forward to it!
You guys didn't just gain a sub, you earned one. Great video seriously.
Had so much truth in thus video.Especially loved the emotion factor!
Thanks for this series a videos guys, truly is very helpful. Used your tips to shoot my best round of 80 last weekend. Keep up the great work!
That's great Blake well done!
Tried your hints today and played my best golf ever! Thank you very much!
Thank you Andy and Piers, I put the tips to break 90's its works, I am averaging 85 at the moment! I shall try out tips to break 80's especially the emotionally tips' as my golf buddies swear and discuss bad holes which in turn affects me game, i will try to ignore their comments!
Great. Glad they helped. yes don't get involved!
greens in regulation and putts. HUGE.
How do you go from 75-80 to 72 71 70 etc? Great video. I'm excited to try it out.
Thanks for all these awesome videos they have helped my game so much. I just shot 1 over par on 9 holes and it was awesome!!
Perfect tips. Gonna use them at my next round tomorrow!!! Thanks a lot. Great page
Hope they help.
Best putting tip I ever received. Hit your pitching wedge and sand wedge closer to the hole and you'll become a better putter!
well I broke 90 for the first time this year and have hit around 6 rounds in mid to low 80's now so thx for the help on how to break 80
Problem 1. Most courses don't sell course planners.
David Logan Guest thank you
Failing that, if you don't mind using your phone during the round, there are free apps around that will give you a pretty good representation of a course guide. I use Golfshot, but there are man others out there that will achieve the same thing.
Wisconsin Golf use golfshot app. I use it every time before I play new golf course.
Golfshot app is amazing. Use it worldwide
Wow all such great tips and so well polished. Love your feed. Keep up the good work and look us up when you get to NYC for some metro golf.
Adam Flynn that was in the how to break 100 video
Will Nash Golf ah...i didnt watch that 1yet as its been so long since those days 4 me (will have to watch that and the break 90 as a refresher) 👍
Impossible. I know where I am ALL the time!
Impossible! I always know exactly where I am (which I'm sure doesn't help)
Kerry Flitter it is very difficult to bot add them up in ur head 😃
But if u can manage not to it does take pressure off u 👍
You guys should go a video about tracking stats. Like a scorecard video where you break down how to keep track of distances of each club, your missed greens, putts, etc. And then how to process those stats into practice time
Hello gents! I'm really going to try to use your pitch principles on my second shot. Thanks!
Thanks Andy and Piers, i love these videos. I'm only 15 years old and broke 75 today, because of your videos. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Please make more like this :)
5:54 Tip: Make sure you cut your rough before you begin the round
AP and Audi pick the right channel to put their logos .... Again... nice tips that both of you shared with us.. Greeting from Indonesia
Would love to see you guys add the ball flight graphic to your shots. Big fan of the channel, cheers for all the sound advice. 🍻
Thanks for the suggestion. Will take it on board.
Sot 81 yesterday, i wish i had watched this video before as there were a few things i could have done that would have taken 2 or 3 shots off my round.
Great stuff. The dead hand wedge is impossible for me though. Requires the body and legs to be synced perfectly because the hands can't react to recover from a poor tempo or position.
Where you line up either left or right in the tee box can eliminate trouble areas or what your preferred ball flight usually is.
I shot 10 under par yesterday. thanks for the tips. hope to break 60 soon. just need to get more eagles.
Ken you have just answered your own question lol.
Ken, I asked the same question a couple of weeks ago, the guys have done a video on it called "pro secrets to an amazing short game".....
Thanks guys had a 74. 2 over par off a 15 handicap love the videos you guys s should play with rick and Peter again soon
the app 18birdies replaces all your course planners and tells you your distances with gps. I've been using it the last 2 rounds and it's helped keeping track of my distances and chosing the right club
Many thanks as always fellas 👍🏼
I broke 80 last time I played, I have a magic pencil that works great!!!
May be coincidence but I broke 80 for the first time the day after watching this video! Thanks Andy and Piers!
Great tips fellas, this made a lot of sense, thank you.
No problem Orlando.
Another top video guys thank you very much you have been a huge help to my game
Thanks Julian!
Nice tips!
Here are 5 of my own tips for breaking 80:
(1) hit the driving range at least 2 times per week, and hit 200 balls, and take some chipping and putting practice while you are there.
Control your emotions? Someone should tell that Sergio Garcia 😂
You’re my favourite instructors and I like that you wear matching outfits, it looks very professional.
It looks goofy
aerial shots of the whole was a neat touch. good job
Thanks, yeh they are cool.
I've broken 80 only twice in my life, and that was 11 years ago when I was 17.
My decision making is pretty poor at times, I always forget to consider those other elements of the game.
I'm a 13 handicap and I found this video very helpful
Broke 80 for the first time yesterday!!! 42 front 37 back!
37 on back is insane, when i shot 79 i had 40 on the front and 39 on the back
I hope someday I will break 80 great lesson yet again 😀⛳️👌
This video is really for the low 80s player. If your high 80 or 90s your goal should be to consistently shoot 84 or less. Tip 1 is great but to put that into action you need to be able to confidently hit shots. All the strategy in the world doesnt matter if you cant pull off the shot. If you plan a 180 yard 6 iron lay up and then chunk or slice it because of poor ball striking your looking at bogey city real quick. Tip to break 80 is become a solid ball striker.
I hole more putts in the 6 foot range now using this method! The Tee goal post! :)
I would love to see videos on spin with pitch and chip shots
Excellent video! keep up the good work fellas
Thanks Patrick
One of the tips I've seen from another pro on alignment is that we don't all see the ball the same. By that, I mean that having your eyes directly over the ball doesn't work for everyone. A lot of people, when they walk up to a shot that they've lined up, feel like it doesn't look right and subconsciously push or pull it. By figuring out where they need to keep their head and eyes so that a properly aligned putt looks correct, they can get rid of that subconscious reaction and sink more putts.
Great vid as always guys
Strategy....Hit it Tree Fitty, chip/pitch it close, and then 1 putt.....
Brian Osentoski Whoop! Whoop!
Lol
:D
Friggen Hillarious!
Like the tips. Thanks guys.
