Yeah, that's gotta be super uncomfortable, but like Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac, they found a way to use it in all the right ways.
@@EmmaBadOnenope, it was 100% about Tony, she's on record multiple times talking about it. This was at the peak of their success so it was long before she went solo. This song was released in 1995 and her first solo album didn't come out until 2004 👍 "It was originally a love song, but Stefani rewrote the lyrics almost completely after her breakup with the band's bass player Tony Kanal. According to her, "It used to be more upbeat, more of a Seventies rock-type thing. [When] Tony and I broke up... it turned into a sad song."
The song was totally about him. The video very much is about the band breaking apart with her getting all the attention (cuz she's gorgeous, hello!). I saw an interview with her about writing the song. At the tune of the interview her heart was alll healed up and she was at a much better place with him but she was recounting how she poured all of her heartbreak from him dumping her into that song and then he had to be around as she sang it out over and over. Anyone who has been through that shit can imagine. She just sorta laughed and said about him having to take that song over and over from her "that poor thing" my thing is, how do you get wrong enough break up witth a beauty like her?!
No Doubt just got back together for the for the first time in 9 or 10 years at this years Coachella. You need to check out that live performance!! She is 54 and in the same shape as she was in 1996 when Don't Speak came out.
Ska!!! She’s amazing!!! Since she married Blake Shelton, awesome video or 50 yr old Gwen coming onto stage at Blakes country tour and singing this!!!!!
This comes from their breakout album "Tragic Kingdom," which is possibly one of my all-time favorite start-to-finish albums. They're definitely a ska/pop-punk band, but this ballad was their first mega-hit single, around 1994 or 1995, I think. Worth looking into more for sure, especially as you start to track how the sound of the band changed over the years.
Yes, I'm the same way with the start-to-finish of "Tragic Kingdom". I also get a kick out of the track "Tragic Kingdom" because it has the recording of the the announcement from Disneyland at the Matterhorn ride "Please Remain Seated, Permanecer Sentados Por Favor". Being a SoCal girl, and as a kid always at Disneyland, it brings back memories.
"Tragic Kingdom" is a play on the Magic Kingdom, the nickname for Disneyland which is about a half mile away from the house No Doubt used on Beacon Ave in Anaheim CA. The house is where most, if not all, of their 2nd album "The Beacon Street Collection" was recorded.
Just a Girl was their first "mega-hit", as that song went platinum and was the first song to make the charts. It was the only song to make it on the Billboard Top 100 which happened in December of 1995, debuting at 84th it's first week. Don't Speak wasn't released till 1996.
I saw No Doubt in 96 as an opening act for a bigger band, and they stole the entire show. Incredible live energy and Gwen Stefani is an amazing singer.
I was bartending in a small club in Costa Mesa, 3 band show.. No Doubt opened , Shrinky Dinks (became Sugar Ray) then the headliners who decided they were too big for our club because their video had played on MTV the week before... They were called Urge Overkill. No Doubt were backstage when they heard the UO people complaining saying they wanted a shorter set, so No Doubt said how long do you want us to play? Amazing times..
sir, you should do the full "Just a Girl" - it's not about being a girl per se, it's about how men treat women like lesser beings. Gwen is a talented artist, and No Doubt is absolutely a ska/punk group - they're just one of those groups where they're talented AF and they can do anything they want.
As a Mom of 2 daughters (5years apart) who was married to a man 13 years older than I (he was born in 1950 and I in 1963) , He couldn't and wouldn't Understand things they were going through,No Doubt, Cranberries, Linkin Park,Green Day were The ONLY music in the House!!
Fashion icon, judge on the voice. I wanted to be her as a teen. “Just a Girl” was an anthem for me!!! Want harder of no doubt “Walking on a Spiderwed”!
Don't Speak came out in like '95 or '96. This is the probably the most radio friendly song on the album. You should definitely listen to Spiderwebs and Just A Girl. Ska had quite the moment in the mid 90's.
This song is supposed to be about her band member who she was going through a break up with too. My husband loves Hollaback Girl, the bananas song,, haha.
This song, I'm Just A Girl, and Spiderwebs were my. Favorite No Doubt songs but when Gwen went solo and made a song with Eve from the Ruff Ryder's and my rap music and POP music worlds collided was when I fell completely in love with her. She's made some amazing music over the years and continues to do so! ❤❤❤
I watch a lot of NBC programming, so I know about Gwen and Blake meeting on the Voice, but another comment just referred to her being 54 and that blew me away. Another thing that blew me away is Blake is only 47.
You should absolutely check out Just A Girl. All of those songs written about famale experience are pointless if nobody but women listen to them. Trust me, we already know. We really do love it when the men in our lives - our husbands, fathers, brothers, friends - get on board with trying to understand what's going on. my feminine side was all about this music as a tough/hard teen, and Cyndi, Madonna, Tina as a kid when I was playing football, talking mad mad shit to all comers, scrapping and being a little man, dude. Open your mind Pegasus, love ya boy!
I’m in my late 40’s, and I did listen to bands like No Doubt in the 90’s. To this day, I still consider this song to be one of the best ever at capturing the feeling of heartbreak at the moment of a breakup. Great reaction video!
I met No Doubt in 97 when she looked like this!!! So beautiful it was distracting!!! It was at an awards after party with them, Bush, and Marylin Manson….(it was an Interscope party and that’s the label we were on) Tony the bassist even came to my bands LA performance a few months later….all nice ppl except Gavin from Bush. Great reaction BP!
Yes. I went to school, and worked with a girl who was nearly identical looking. Ive honestly never felt so strong for someone as i did for her. What a curse for a girl lol.
Gwen Stefani is a pretty darn good song writer. They all cross a few genres. Come this winter, check the songs she put on her Christmas album. She wrote and performed some excellent original holiday songs. And most of them will get your feet moving.
What is even more amazing from Punk/Ska roots. Gwen was married to Gavin Rosdale of the rock band from the UK BUSH. She is now married to country mega star Blake Shelton. She has 2 number one country songs with Blake. Blake has 28 number one songs...plus she is on the Voice as one of judges. Amazing talent!!
Love No doubt!! They were a Ska/Punk band! This definitely takes me back to my early teenage years! If u check out more, listen to Spiderwebs! It's a little more upbeat!
She brought a voice to a lot of us girls in the 90s. She had a toughness and but also could be "prettygirl", which told us we could be more than one thing. She was very important to a lot of us. A great song to check out is Underneath It All, which features a Jamaican (i think) artist named Lady Saw who should have gotten a lot more are play after she collaborated with them. You have to get the long version though to hear that part, because they cut it out a lot on the radio versions, just like they used to cut out Left Eye's raps from TLC songs on the radio (which is a tragedy).
As a 90’s kid, No Doubt was one of the biggest acts in the world. This was them at their peak, but they wrote lots of great music. Gwen is a powerhouse female doing it the way it should be done.
Yep. Imagine being that strong and beautiful as a woman. Taking the spotlight and running with it. You’re right. She is stunning. Superstar. Great reaction 👊🏼
I just saw their reunion at Coachella in April! I put some of their performances on my channel! I went there to see them and get their limited edition merch…so amazing!!!
Reminds me of someone I didn’t treat well who loved me so much and he finally said enough. This song came on in the car and I sobbed and sobbed. He never gave in and I married someone else (which didn’t work). It’s been 27 years and I still love and miss him, but it’s too late. Every time I hear this it all comes flooding back. I love you P. Always. Such a great song.
I think also the video puts it in the frame the band broke up too. Yes i know it was made toward the guy who broke up with her but i think they also felt that pull from 'the man' that she was what they wanted not the band
Yes! YES! YES! I seen them in concert took my daughter in 2010! Heard them for the first time in 95! They are that Epic then, then & NOW! She might sing a few Country songs but shes schooled in R&B!
Dude! I used to DJ back in the 90's, I even did Video DJing for a couple years. I've played this song countless times, even the video. I have seen No Doubt in concert. I just noticed something for the first time about this video. The little drama acting sequences where they are doing the photo shoot, it is like a little side story of how music producers will sign a whole group but they really only have their eye on one person. That is what the eating of the maggoty apple is. They get their record contract but that is the thing that breaks the group up. What a cool little story, still a break up story. I love it! So glad you play these old songs BP
I love No Doubt! I believe they’re coming out with a new album. Can’t wait for that! I saw them in HI when I was in high school, I never had so much fun during that time in my life. Which was a pretty dark time for me. I was not in a good place and No Doubt helped me out somehow, Gwen Stefani I think is amazing! She’s amazing!! I had Tragic Kingdom on repeat when I was in high school.
Speaking of Snoop Dog, he’s going to be a coach on the next season of “The Voice” and so is Gwen! What are the odds haha! At age 54, she’s still in amazing shape and can dance hard during her performances!
Tragic Kingdom is such a good record from front to back. Tragic Kingdom was released in 1995, album is certified Diamond with 16mil sold worldwide. Number 1 album on Billboard 200. Hit songs were "Just a Girl", "Spiderwebs", "Don't Speak"- Except for "Just a Girl", which peaked at 23 on Billboard 200, none charted due to no commercial single release for "Don't Speak" and "Spiderwebs". Don't Speak was #1 on Billboards Hot 100 Airplay charts for 16 straight weeks. Minor hits with "Excuse Me Mr." and "Sunday Morning". "Don't Speak" written by Gwen and her brother Eric(who left the band once this album was finished) is about Gwen's break-up with bass player Tony Kanal (guy with the buzz cut at the beginning of the mv picking the orange)...So No Doubt is kind of like a Fleetwood Mac of the 90s; except not every song written was about bad member relationships with each other. I would give a listen to this album in it's entirety. "Just a Girl" and "Spiderwebs" of the major hits fit more in the Ska mold.
Ska is an excellent genre of music. The Mighty Mighty Boss Tones was around the same time period as No Doubt. New Ska band The Defiant just released an album (lead singer formerly with The Mighty Mighty Boss Tones, drummer formerly with The Offspring, guitarist formerly with Smashmouth etc...).
I came from rock and progressive rock of the 70's abd whe i heard this song in the mid 90's i knew she was going to be big. She gas an excellent voice and their song writing was great.
I saw No Doubt live in 1997. Gwen is an amazing 'front man'. She owned the audience. She had just the males singing "I'm just a girl", and we were happy to do it!
I absolutely love this song....its amazing Gwen was able to write a song about her breakup with her bandmate & actually make it big cus of it but also have the ex the song is about in the video & still stay in the band together til she took a break for her solo career 🤯....their considered a 'Ska' band....early 90's is when this came out
Gwen Stefani's voice and her presence is captivating. Such a heart-felt performance doing a pre-mourn of the upcoming demise of her band "No Doubt". It was her skyrocket to fame that caused her bandmates to decide to end the band. She's clearly distraught. And recalling all the great memories and moments she had with them. She's a class act. One of the most honest songs ever. I hope she and her former bandmates are still friends. She deeply cared about them.
She wrote this about her ex, Tony the bassist.. they had a long term relationship, then broke up and she wrote this song, but they stayed in the band together.. she went on to marry Gavin Rosdale, who cheated on her (??!!) .. now she's married to country star Blake Shelton, who says he was so impressed with her, she wasn't like anyone else he'd met in "the industry",she drove herself to The Voice in a black minivan and is a mother first.. she seems like such a cool person. When you listen to her in interviews she just has a certain vibe that is hard to put into words. Apparently she goes to Church every Sunday... I just love her so much. I would defnitely suggest checking out "About a Girl".. she's such a ham in the video, I think you would like it. :)
They are Ska yes. This is one of their ballads. I wore out this whole album back in the day playing it so much 🥰 You'd probably enjoy the rhythms in most, if not all of the songs on this album
No Doubt was Ska. Gwen Stefani has gone on to have a big solo career since the release of Don't Speak which I believe came out around 97. You might have heard Hollaback Girl from her.
I wasn't into the genre, but from the outside looking in, Gwen hit the scene hard and fast! I heard about "this band from Orange County", and the super cute, athletic front-girl... the next thing you knew, they were HUGE! 🤙😎
Love that you're reacting to this man. Love No Doubt and this song especially. I actually sampled it for a song from my last album so it holds a special place in my heart. Keep up the great work brother!
I skipped a test in college to go to one of their concerts when they got back together... they sound great live & it was all good vibes! Worth that failing grade on that single test 😂
I really liked No Doubt when they first got big, but my favorite song that features Gwen Stefani is the cover of the song “You’re the Boss” on The Brian Setzer Orchestra’s album “The Dirty Boogie”. Brian Setzer got famous as the lead singer and guitar player for the rockabilly trio, Stray Cats around 1980. He basically fell off until a big band swing group formed in his neighborhood and teased him about jamming. He took them up on it and they worked up a set of old songs which the covered as a full band with Brian ripping it up on guitar and vocals. They played their first show to a basically empty venue, but word spread and they had lines around the block within a few shows. I would say “You’re the Boss” is worth checking out even though it’s not really well known, but if you want to check out something from The Brian Setzer orchestra I would recommend “Switchblade 327”, “Rock This Town”, or “This Cat’s on a Hot Tin Roof” which is, in my opinion, one of the best album openers of all time.
The song which made them famous. She wrote it when her boyfriend Tony Kanal (the black guitarist standing next to her in the video) broke up with her, breaking her heart. The break-up song about him is what gave him his career.
Imagine singing that while breaking up with your guy who is playing the bass.
Yeah, that's gotta be super uncomfortable, but like Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac, they found a way to use it in all the right ways.
Real Fleetwood Mac energy.
i thought it was the drummer, but it doesn't matter who it was , it was someone in the band.
@@johanbruinsma8243it was the bass player Tony Kanal
They're still good friends
Gwen wrote this after the bass player, Tony Kanal broke up with her. So she's singing a song about a breakup with her ex playing bass on the song.
I've heard that but, and also, the video with the lyrics could be referring to their band breaking up and the industry pushing for her to be solo.
@@EmmaBadOnenope, it was 100% about Tony, she's on record multiple times talking about it. This was at the peak of their success so it was long before she went solo. This song was released in 1995 and her first solo album didn't come out until 2004 👍

Can't hit 90's without looking at Garbage. Like no Doubt and The Cranberries they were the voice of us 90's kids.
I am hooked on Garbage's "The World Is Not Enough".
Agree on garbage. So many songs
Garbage!
Add Hole or Verucca Salt.
Shirley Manson is phenomenal.
Every teenage boy in the 90s immediately fell in love with Gwen Stefani after seeing this. Bananas killed my soul, however.
A lot more than teenagers had a huge crush on her. 🥸
Bananas is top 10 worst songs ever.
Every chic I knew was in love with Gavin so we had a love/hate relationship with Gwen once they hooked up. 😆

Its hard not to "fall in love" with her in this video. The girl has extreme talent and charisma.

I was thinking this, too. Especially as a "girl dad" it might help him see the world they'll live in through a different lens.
it's a great performance and i'm a fan of their/her music but the lyrics of "just a girl" is delusional 4th wave feminist tripe.
I've heard that song for years, but it only struck me about six months ago exactly how much pure RAGE was contained in the lyrics.
The song Spiderwebs is another banger from back then.

Which was a pretty dark time for me. I was not in a good place and No Doubt helped me out somehow, Gwen Stefani I think is amazing! She’s amazing!! I had Tragic Kingdom on repeat when I was in high school.
That crazy was listening to this on the way home and wondered when BP will get round to this, great album!
This song will forever remind me of the times when my son was just a newborn♥ it was playing everywhere
Dang how did I miss this one! This is classic lol take me back to middle school and the skating rink haha
"Just a Girl" and "Spiderwebs" of the major hits fit more in the Ska mold.
gotta love 90's alternative music. you should hear her on the song spiderwebs. thanks for the amazing reactions :)
You should check out “Just a Girl” having a daughter, it’s about how society treats women and standing strong as a woman. It’s an anthem, really.
I love no doubts version of its my life - great video for it too
Ska is an excellent genre of music. The Mighty Mighty Boss Tones was around the same time period as No Doubt. New Ska band The Defiant just released an album (lead singer formerly with The Mighty Mighty Boss Tones, drummer formerly with The Offspring, guitarist formerly with Smashmouth etc...).
Great reaction! I would definitely recommend reacting to more No doubt! Especially from this album, it's so good😊
The 90’s baby! This was great music. I loved Gwen back then
I came from rock and progressive rock of the 70's abd whe i heard this song in the mid 90's i knew she was going to be big. She gas an excellent voice and their song writing was great.
The live performances back then were so personal and amazing.
I used to love this song and she looks stunning in the video esp when wearing the sparkly necklace - like Marilyn Munro 👏 Came out in the 90s
Always loved this song.
No Doubt JUST played Cochella a couple of weeks ago and they were phenomenal!
Great band, lots of great music.
I saw No Doubt live in 1997. Gwen is an amazing 'front man'. She owned the audience. She had just the males singing "I'm just a girl", and we were happy to do it!
I miss the band No Doubt....wish they still performed.
I absolutely love this song....its amazing Gwen was able to write a song about her breakup with her bandmate & actually make it big cus of it but also have the ex the song is about in the video & still stay in the band together til she took a break for her solo career 🤯....their considered a 'Ska' band....early 90's is when this came out
Played this CD on repeat back in the day! 🔥
Yeh you're right there mate, there was just something about Gwen,an Amazing voice and,I'm not normally into slim blonds, but GODDAMN!!👀😱👏👏👏😍😍😍🤷♂️💜
They reunited for Coachella very recently and KILLED IT.
And Blake, who had no kids, loves her three boys. Moved her and the boys out of the big city and moved to Oklahoma.
This album was so good yeh me in my 20s at the time.. Don't speak, Sunday morning, Spiderwebs, Just a girl ❤
They are Ska yes. This is one of their ballads. I wore out this whole album back in the day playing it so much 🥰
You'd probably enjoy the rhythms in most, if not all of the songs on this album
Im primarily a metalhead but I have to say I love this song!!!!!
She always has a distinctive voice
I love Gwen... she is a one of one... super different and unique
No Doubt was Ska. Gwen Stefani has gone on to have a big solo career since the release of Don't Speak which I believe came out around 97. You might have heard Hollaback Girl from her.
“Underneath it all”… fabulous track.
I wasn't into the genre, but from the outside looking in, Gwen hit the scene hard and fast!
I heard about "this band from Orange County", and the super cute, athletic front-girl... the next thing you knew, they were HUGE! 🤙😎
Much respect for taking back the "this b can sing" not just once, but twice.
You need to do more No Doubt thier amazing oh my gosh
Love that you're reacting to this man. Love No Doubt and this song especially. I actually sampled it for a song from my last album so it holds a special place in my heart. Keep up the great work brother!
I remember when this came out but I didn't know the context. Definitely worth covering
Oh to hear this song/watch this video for the first time again 🥹
I know you have been told this, but it is Gwen Stefani. Early 90s No Doubt was charting for sure!! Nice reaction!! 💜
This song is amazing when you're driving🔥👍🏼
I skipped a test in college to go to one of their concerts when they got back together... they sound great live & it was all good vibes! Worth that failing grade on that single test 😂
This was essentially the bands break up song. And then Gwen released all her solo stuff. Such a good song.
I love Stray Cats 😂
She is married to country music's Blake Shelton. Both of them were mentors on the show The Voice.
The song which made them famous. She wrote it when her boyfriend Tony Kanal (the black guitarist standing next to her in the video) broke up with her, breaking her heart. The break-up song about him is what gave him his career.
Haha, was a huge no doubt fan back in the day, nostalgia right here. 😂
