"vibrato" is the word you were looking for, meaning modulating pitch. It's often difficult to keep a pure note perfectly in pitch, so singing long notes with vibrato helps singers keep their pitch accurate, while also sounding very dramatic and evocative.
vibrato is involuntary. singers using their voices is like athletes using their muscles. it doesn't matter how strong the muscle, it cannot remain flexed. the same is true for most people's voices. there are some (very few) singers who can sing with no vibrato, but for the most part, its uncontrollable.
Vibrato doesn't help you stay on pitch. It's just 2 notes extremely close in pitch sung back to back, rapidly, that ends vocal phrasings more neatly. If you're off, vibrato won't save you. You'll still be singing the wrong general notes. In fact, some singers have such huge vibrato that they sound really off pitch when they sing because the rapidly alternating notes are so far in pitch from each other. Liza Minelli is a classic example of this. Can't stand to hear her sing for this reason. And like a couple of you have said, it's easier to hold a note without vibrato than to hold one with.
Gwen's solo stuff is definitely more pop with some hip hop production. No Doubt is a little punk, ska, reggae and rock, depending on what part of their career. Lots to choose from though. Great band.
There is a big message in the song and she uses her voice perfectly in it. Sounds like she’s portrayed as innocent and fragile and being overprotected in a stereotype way . But when she hits the chorus the real her comes out saying “screw you” I’m independent and I can do this without being told how to be in life.
It's rather whiny. Also, that rule of thumb line would be based on feminist studies propaganda that it has to do with being able to beat your wife with a stick as thick as your thumb. It doesn't, Rule of Thumb comes from carpentry. The song reeks of middle class girl going to college, and being told by other middle class women (who are so down trodden being allowed to teach nonsense as college courses) how the imaginary patriarchy is horrible.
I always thought that too... but when you really really pay attention to the lyrics... I think she's talking more about toxic masculinity... that she feels forced to be this stereotype just to be safe and society is ok with it because it's the norm.
They always had lots of energy. Gwen was very charismatic and quirky too lol. Here's an old video of this song (late '90s) on a tv show. Punk and ska punk makes people pogo ( jump up and down) 😆 th-cam.com/video/tmTduu666zI/w-d-xo.html
Lol. This was way before the pop rap music she was doing after the mid 2000s. She was well known before that, No Doubt was extremely popular during the '90s and '00s. Gwen was a punk rocker before her solo career.
This song, and heck, the whole 'Tragic Kingdom' album was such an important record in the 90's at a time when dark, depressing grunge rock music was at it's peak and heard everywhere. This upbeat album was a much needed change from that and hence became one the biggest selling albums of the entire decade. Great reaction as usual guys.
She is trying to sound helpless. Because that is how the world treats her. As a girl. If you understand that, you then can't help but understand how well she speaks and emotes through her music. 💖
She should try being a guy. If you're in pain they tell you "walk it off" or "quit being such a wuss". Having a rough day? You're told to "suck it up". She's a girl and who doesn't like being coddled. ...poor thing.

She was on top of the world when she fronted No Doubt. That album, “Tragic Kingdom”, was huge. I remember most of the year following its release it would get stereo time at every party. “Don’t Speak” and “Spiderwebs” were both pretty big.
Great reaction. Glad to see reactions to No Doubt. This is the first No Doubt song I heard. The music video came in at a friend's house in the early 90s. At a time when grunge owned music this was completely different. Iliked the sound and loved the sarcastic lyrics. The whole Tragic Kingdom album is excellent. Also I'm 51 and a total 80s old school thrash metal fan.

“Hey Baby” from their Rock Steady album is a jam. Probably my favorite one they ever did. Gwen also did a song with the rapper Eve called “Let Me Blow Ya Mind.”
Hollaback girl definitely came out after this when she went solo. It was Gwyn's answer to Courtney Love talking trash behind her back and saying she had no talent LOL.
I remember first hearing this song in the opening of 'Romy and Michele's High School Reunion' and for years thought it was from the 1980s like the rest of the music from the movie. Great song, great reaction.

I can't believe Gwen Stefani is in her 50's, still looks hot as ever. Loved No Doubt, they reminded me alot of The Police with their mixture of Post punk, pop, reggae, synth pop. Sunday morning, Spiderwebs are my faves amongst others. Great band live.
Gwen Stefani was actually dating the singer from Bush around this time. This is the song they became famous for. Great video. Good ska band especially in the album before this one. Her and Brad (from Sublime) did a couple of good songs together, too.
My daughter introduced me to No Doubt’s Tragic Kingdom album when it first came out. Her growing up with my music from Aerosmith to Zeppelin. Great album!
The bane of ska/punk purists everywhere, No Doubt (Gwen and the boys) were kind of a more new wavey/pop-punk version of the heavily reggae-influenced punk music of '80s/'90s Orange County. But they were HUGE! For my money, Gwen Stefani was the queen of '90s/'00s pop-punk. Hands down. For a listen of No Doubt at their most "punk", I'd highly recommend giving "Spiderwebs" or "Excuse Me Mr" a try. Or even Gwen's collabs with Sublime -- "Total Hate '95" and "Saw Red."

Gwen from Vanity Fair.... "When I was growing up, some of my favorite bands were Fishbone, the Specials, Madness, the Selecter. After high school I fell in love with Depeche Mode, the Cure, the Smiths. I think I'm still stuck in the '80s!"

The sound at the end which is made by the guitar and is also also what she does with her voice is called vibrato. When she does it she doesn't heavily and exaggerates it while we are used to hearing it a little bit more subtle from singers
She sang somewhat like (and seemed heavily influenced by) Dale Bozzio from the group Missing Persons. You guys should react to some of their stuff. Dale was very influential in terms of makeup and hair styles (I would say Lady Gaga is indirectly it not directly influenced by her) but is pretty much an unknown nowadays which is a bit sad imo. Other women like Madonna and Cindy Lauper get all the credit for developing that 80s style but really I think Dale got there first.
I don’t usually recommend video versions of songs for a first listen but you definitely need to go watch the attitude/ style in their videos. It’s infectious.
No Doubt hails from Orange County California. For about 10 years I lived on the same street but about 2 miles away in Anaheim that the house the band used as their home base and used the address as the mailing address for the No Doubt fan club but I didn't even live in Orange County at the same time. They named their 2nd album after that street. The name of the album was called The Beacon Street Collection because they recorded most of the music on it at that house. The house is near Disneyland, which is reportedly why they called their third album The Tragic Kingdom. Their songs Just a Girl, Spiderwebs and Don't Speak are from their 3rd album. Just a Girl comes from Gwen's own experience of getting yelled at by her father for driving home alone late one night from her boyfriend's home.
The thing Brad is talking about that she does with her voice is vibrato, but she adds a bit of melisma to it also. Another vocalist that does similar things to fill space in a vocal track is Tatiana of Jinjer - perhaps she even learned that from listening to Gwen Stefani
The lyrics in this video really make me roll my eyes now. And yet I still love it. Just a solid banger. No Doubt really had a great sound going. Also 5:30-5:50 - No Doubt and Gwen Stefani were HUGE back in the 90s. Stefani was able to transition into a successful solo career for herself because of how successful her band No Doubt was.
