Prelude to an Ocean Crossing - Ep. 28 RAN Sailing

  • We finally caught a fish! And you will probably laugh because it was sooo small :) But it was tasty! Join us on our preparation sail for the Atlantic crossing, a 750 Nm passage from El Hierro, Canary Islands to Mindelo, Sao Vicente, Cape Verde. Except from a couple of things breaking and too light winds in the beginning it was a good sail that took us 6 1/2 days.
We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved in to our sailboat RAN, a custom built aluminium Beason 40, and untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter and started to sail south along the coast of Europe. There is no set route and we will go where the wind and our minds takes us.
Read more about us and the boat and get updates and photos!

I loved the video. It just shows that step-by-step: strong winds, low winds, downwind, rolly seas all it takes is patience and you eventually arrive at your destination. Safe journey.

Great episode - thanks. I have a thought on your shaft noise. On my previous boat, I had a "dripless shaft seal". It was designed not to leak any water and it didn't. But it would get air trapped inside the log (where the shaft enters the boat) and that would cause the seal to make a kind of screeching noise. That was annoying but it also caused the shaft to overheat in the area of the seal. After about 100 engine hours, the shaft finally broke at the location of the seal. I found out before it was too late that I should periodically "burp" the seal to release any trapped water. When I replaced the shaft and the seal, the seal maker had re-designed the seal to incorporate a vent so that burping would not be necessary. I looked at your video of the shaft/seal area and couldn't tell what kind of setup you have but it doesn't look like the type of seal I had. Still, it is possible you may be having a similar problem?? The way air gets in the log is by going hard in reverse. The prop cavitates and pushes lots of air bubbles forward, into the log.
    Have a safe trip.

I know that sounds obscured.. but hey! What do you do when there is no choice.. make a game of it.. and the time will past with wonderful memories. Even if it is a distasteful moment. Hey Johan, I like the way you choose the English words so "carefully". Thinking about it and with confidence say something not in Swedish but in English. I'm South African and my mother tongue is Afrikaans. Very close to Dutch and Belgium. So speaking in English/American very "rusty" if you know what I mean. But what I want to say is that the way you translate directly from Swedish to English is what makes your sailing vlog so special. Like when you lost your Ray Ban's and said you were going to buy a "couple". And Malin laughed and asked how many do you need. You wanted to say you need a "pair". Now in certain Languages a pair and a couple could be the same thing. Anyways , just go on being the cool Viking and treat Malin like your princess. If you ever come to Cape Town, it will be my honor to have you , and to treat you on all the nice things in the Western Cape. After the Atlantic crossing you must come back to Cape Town. If you didnt start, Come to
    SA!!!!

My go to remedy for bullet proofing me from seasickness was to use a prescription of Scopolamine in a 0.4mg pill named Scopace made commercially by Hope Industries. They quite making the pill in 2012, so I had to get a compounding pharmacy to make it for me in a 0.4mg capsule form. It still requires a prescription for them to make, but my doctor was still able to prescribe it. One every 4 hours works best for me while kayak fishing in the rough Pacific ocean with a 30 to 45 minute head start on the first one of the day.
Maybe check online where you can get locate a compounding pharmacy to have this made for you (provided you can get a prescription for it as well.

Got a great tip for you, just in case you don't know about it. I noticed you were having egg sandwiches for lunch and it made me think of this little tip if you will take vegetable oil and layer it over the egg shells it will preserve the eggs for weeks and sometimes months. This will allow you to have eggs on a longer voyage!

If you feel sea sick, try Rich tea biscuits, they are hard to eat when feeling sick but they work great & you will feel better after taking some, i have tried them with 60-70 ft waves up shetland in a force 11 & a old fisherman told me that trick & it works great ;)

Try this breathing exercise... When the boat rises take a deep breath and hold it till the boat begins to fall. Breath normally until the boat begins to rise. Fill your lungs with a deep breath as the boat crests and exhale as it drops and begin to breath normally. It's almost a form of meditation that will relax you and with time you won't know your doing it. Proven to work as a Coast Guard Search and Rescue small boat operator for 5 years. Hope it works for you and anyone else that may try it. Stay safe!

Well, if you end up not be able to use the engine at least you have sails... Sorry i have a flair for the obvious ; ). Just remember the old days when those old sailormen/women had nothing but sails. The main thing is that you have the engine for a generator and emergencies. Ah so much fun in the Horse Latitudes...

I do love to see your adventures, very well filmed and narrated. Do you foresee any difficulties with waves and the solar panels on the lifelines? When are you planning to cross the Atlantic to the West Indies? Will you continue through the Panama canal? Great video guys. Just a note, for sea sickness, at your next port buy some pure Peppermint essential oils. A drop in glass of water settles your tummy plus if you touch the top (cap off of course) and rub ur fingers together to warm the oil and sniff it, that will also help you. Seasickness is so bad. One of the few downsides of sea travel.
A day or two and your good to go. What are things you can do to avoid it?
Those flags really get tattered ( beat up ).
How tuff is all the imagination stuff ( how much $$$ ) when you leave a location do tell the new destination
your coming there way??? Or do you just show up???
All good stuff.. Thank you and be safe.😎

Being seasick is really not fun and it derails often what else that goes on. I have tried a few remedies and have found Stugeron to be very good. As always we love your videos, we're sailors from British Columbia, Canada. We are longtime sailors, although not familiar with open ocean sailing we would strongly suggest, for your safety when working on open decks, that you wear lifejackets. We're sailing a Panda 40 cutter rig and highly recommend a visit to our part of the World. Many cruiser/sailors who have sailed to the far reaches have said that our area is the best and most beautiful ! We would welcome you to visit us in Beautiful British Columbia..with thousands of Island, Fjords, Bays and friendly people..

Dinner looked delicious! Glad Malin wasn't sick for too long, it must be really tough when you know there is no going back. Also, how big were those rollers? They looked huge!

Because it makes a lot of noise and of course to save Diesel.

Great video RAN crew. Your videos are getting better and better. You can't catch a dolphin much smaller than that so I'm sure get a few that are much larger on you crossing. Where are guys heading to?
Over 15,000 subs already! I think you guys many need to think of what you'll do at 100,000!

    • @RANSailing
      @RANSailing  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thanks Jonathan! Haha! Yes, it was certainly a really small dolphin fish. :-) We hope to be more lucky during our crossing. We haven't decided fully yet where we are going, but we are leaning towards going directly to Grenada to haul the boat there. We need to replace the anods, and get a new layer of antifouling paint. The problem with the stuffing box is also one of the reasons why we might go directly. But first we are going to cruise a bit in the Cabo Verde. :-)
100.000 subs! Yes that would have been something! :-) If we ever get there I will think of something cool to do! :-) Take care! /Johan

Maybe reach out to Rick Moore for some advice on the best place to haul out. He's here on youtube or check his website out to email him. He's been sailing the area for 10 years. I think he said this his his last season and before heading west toward the Pacific. I'm sure he'd be more than happy to give sound advice and contacts. Well I guess we'll get one more video before you guys are MIA for a bit during the crossing.

Hi RAN people :) Really nice to see your video again, and.. It's educational for a new beginner in living aboard man that hope to step in your footsteps some day soon.
Perhaps its a rather stupid question but i see you use a nice shipslog, and i have looked in several places but not could find a proper book. Still use the laptop version but that's less convenient (just some information for myself)
Can you tell me where you get a proper shipslog book that i can use in my starting journeys? I'm jealous of yours hehehe.
Have a safe trip guys and hopefully the problem of the shaft will be really minor.

Glad you like the videos and find them useful! We bought this logbook in Guernsey, it's called Adlard Coles Nautical Logbook. It's ok but we think it would be better to have more days in every book spread to make it last longer. Fair winds to you and take care!
