Some may argue that VW's VR5 and VR6 are V engines. By definition they are not, as they use a single head and the valves are staggered. VR5 and VR6 engines are not V engines. They are actually inline 5 and 6 engines with the cylinders opened up to 15 degrees to reduce length. They have nothing in common with V engines... not the crankshaft , firing order or balance.

I have to disagree with idea that the v10 was mostly used in F1. The Ford Modular V10 continues to be one of the biggest uses of a gas powered V10 heavy trucks even after the introduction of replacement V8s in the smaller parts of Ford's truck line up.
I'd agree. Theyre likely the most common and widely used application of a v10. F-series pickups, School busses, box trucks, contruction vehicles, and even motor homes used them. If it had the blue oval and wasn't diesel, you could almost guarantee it was a v10. What's more, the Dodge viper wasn't mentioned nor was the LFA. I mean, think v10 and boom, brain goes straight to the viper.

Inline engines to me are just better. Im a truck driver and ive never actually seen a semi truck that didn't have an Inline 6. Ive heard of people having very special orders from manufacturers to have V engines made but those are owner operators And even then most owner operators have Inline 6. Its less moving parts and easier and cheaper to work on. If you gotta replace a head gasket on an Inline motor its much easier as you only have to take 1 gasket off vs a V engine where you gotta take 2 off. It might only be the one side giving you problems but usually when one side is going the other is not far, so instead why not replace the other one while you already have other parts off. Just saves you time and money later down the road, I learned that from experience with a ford ranger 4.0 V6. Mechanic told me right side was leaking so i replaced it and about a month later the other one started leaking. So my truck was out of service for another week when i could've just saved myself extra work if i ld replaced the other side with it. Also valve covers. They might not be going out but if you already have the top of the engine taken apart might as well. Like i said saves you from future hassle.

I have been told that it is an I4. but I want to check for myself(it does not have the type of engine written on the engine so I have no idea). Also, for future reference, some ways to determine how many cylinders your car has is by counting the spark plugs and looking at the owners manual. Some engines have two spark plugs per cylinder, so counting the spark plugs may not work.

The famous Alfa Romeo Busso V6 was a 60° V6 with 6 throws on the crankshaft. This engine was very smooth and made the famous howling noise (Arese Violin) because the firing strokes were the same. It was, however, more complicated than a 90° V6 with 3 crankpins, and is mechanically not as strong, as the Busso V6 had 6 throws, but only 4 main bearings.
5:44 Wrong information, its not a V5, it´s a VR5 Engine (Bank-angle smaller than 60°; One Zylinder Head, One Exhaust Manifold and One Intake Manifold) It´s closer to a I5 than a V engine Layout.
In the intro you described that the angles vary from 60° to 90°. However, the Volkswagen V5 engine that you described has an angle of merely 15°. Still the best engine I ever had in posession. The sound was also unique and one of it's kind.

I’d say that both V engines and Inline engines have their place in the world. Inlines are great for spots requiring ease of work, simplicity, and low end torque while V engines are better for tight spaces that need mo powa baby. My favorites from both worlds would be the Inline 6 and the V12 just for the sounds and balance of both. 12/12 😉 in my opinion

It should be noted that heavy vehicles like modern tanks and also boats usually have low rev V10-12 or bigger engines for electricity generation (although modern tanks also use turbines), sometimes more than 1 engine, especially for boats. Propulsion is made with electric motors because no clutch / transmission would survive for long the colossal torque of said engines and inertia of boat propellers / tank tracks.

who else is confused by the "fact" that v4 engines "never caught on" and that they are "really rare". A large amount of cars throughout solely the USA, are produced with v4 engines because they are cheaper than large v type engines and v4 engines are much more fuel efficient
i was so confused too! over here in Europe almost every low to mid class car got a V4 engine. Even high class cars like mercedes are still developing newer V4 engines to reduce high fuel consuption but still remain great horsepower.

The inline 4 is by far the most common automotive engine layout because it achieves the best compromise between size, weight, complexity, smoothness, power capability and cost of any engine design. While inline 4 cylinder engines are neither exciting nor innovative, they are definitely the "best" possible configuration in almost every respect. Not trying to diss cool V8's or V12's - what gearhead wouldn't want to own a car with an exciting engine? But from an engineering and cost standpoint nothing can beat the inline 4. If you must use a V engine, 4 cylinders achieves a very poor cost/benefit ratio. This improves dramatically with V6 and V8 engines with the V8 being the best cost/complexity, size and weight compromise of any V engine. When you start going beyond 8 cylinders the cost compromise worsens again except in the case of very large capacity industrial engines like those fitted to trucks, trains, or ships or as static engines for use in electrical generators or pumps.
V12 is the best configuration, those engines are extremely coordinated and quiet in operation, which Mercedes showed with the first S600 model V12 and 6000 cc, the engine worked so quietly that they put a coin on the bucket on the valve cover, not only while the engine was running, but they and ignited, and the coin was still standing on the bucket, and while they revved the engine, the coin did not move a millimeter.

Some may argue that VW's VR5 and VR6 are V engines. By definition they are not, as they use a single head and the valves are staggered. They tried to create the perfect inline/V combo and to some extent they succeeded. VR5 Golfs and Jettas (Bora here in EU) are going up in price, mostly due to the amazing sound and decent performance (for its age)

VR5 and VR6 engines are not V engines. They are actually inline 5 and 6 engines with the cylinders opened up to 15 degrees to reduce length. They have nothing in common with V engines... not the crankshaft , firing order or balance.

My '84 Honda Magna 700C has a V4 engine. I love the sound on cold starts and when I rev it upto 10k.

I have to disagree with idea that the v10 was mostly used in F1. The Ford Modular V10 continues to be one of the biggest uses of a gas powered V10 heavy trucks even after the introduction of replacement V8s in the smaller parts of Ford's truck line up.
I'd agree. Theyre likely the most common and widely used application of a v10. F-series pickups, School busses, box trucks, contruction vehicles, and even motor homes used them. If it had the blue oval and wasn't diesel, you could almost guarantee it was a v10.
What's more, the Dodge viper wasn't mentioned nor was the LFA. I mean, think v10 and boom, brain goes straight to the viper.

Inline engines to me are just better. Im a truck driver and ive never actually seen a semi truck that didn't have an Inline 6. Ive heard of people having very special orders from manufacturers to have V engines made but those are owner operators
And even then most owner operators have Inline 6. Its less moving parts and easier and cheaper to work on. If you gotta replace a head gasket on an Inline motor its much easier as you only have to take 1 gasket off vs a V engine where you gotta take 2 off. It might only be the one side giving you problems but usually when one side is going the other is not far, so instead why not replace the other one while you already have other parts off. Just saves you time and money later down the road, I learned that from experience with a ford ranger 4.0 V6. Mechanic told me right side was leaking so i replaced it and about a month later the other one started leaking. So my truck was out of service for another week when i could've just saved myself extra work if i ld replaced the other side with it. Also valve covers. They might not be going out but if you already have the top of the engine taken apart might as well. Like i said saves you from future hassle.

I have been told that it is an I4. but I want to check for myself(it does not have the type of engine written on the engine so I have no idea). Hopefully you see this, if not just continue your awesome content.
From what i looked up the 2000 'S' spec is a v6 engine known as "6a13." hope this helps.

Also, for future reference, some ways to determine how many cylinders your car has is by counting the spark plugs and looking at the owners manual. Some engines have two spark plugs per cylinder, so counting the spark plugs may not work.

The famous Alfa Romeo Busso V6 was a 60° V6 with 6 throws on the crankshaft. This engine was very smooth and made the famous howling noise (Arese Violin) because the firing strokes were the same. It was, however, more complicated than a 90° V6 with 3 crankpins, and is mechanically not as strong, as the Busso V6 had 6 throws, but only 4 main bearings.
Those are not Vs, those are boxers. The difference between them is the split crank throws. Chrysler also builds 60 degree boxers.

I’d say that both V engines and Inline engines have their place in the world. Inlines are great for spots requiring ease of work, simplicity, and low end torque while V engines are better for tight spaces that need mo powa baby. My favorites from both worlds would be the Inline 6 and the V12 just for the sounds and balance of both. 12/12 😉 in my opinion

It should be noted that heavy vehicles like modern tanks and also boats usually have low rev V10-12 or bigger engines for electricity generation (although modern tanks also use turbines), sometimes more than 1 engine, especially for boats. Propulsion is made with electric motors because no clutch / transmission would survive for long the colossal torque of said engines and inertia of boat propellers / tank tracks.

who else is confused by the "fact" that v4 engines "never caught on" and that they are "really rare". A large amount of cars throughout solely the USA, are produced with v4 engines because they are cheaper than large v type engines and v4 engines are much more fuel efficient
i was so confused too! over here in Europe almost every low to mid class car got a V4 engine. Even high class cars like mercedes are still developing newer V4 engines to reduce high fuel consuption but still remain great horsepower.

The inline 4 is by far the most common automotive engine layout because it achieves the best compromise between size, weight, complexity, smoothness, power capability and cost of any engine design. While inline 4 cylinder engines are neither exciting nor innovative, they are definitely the "best" possible configuration in almost every respect. Not trying to diss cool V8's or V12's - what gearhead wouldn't want to own a car with an exciting engine? But from an engineering and cost standpoint nothing can beat the inline 4. If you must use a V engine, 4 cylinders achieves a very poor cost/benefit ratio. This improves dramatically with V6 and V8 engines with the V8 being the best cost/complexity, size and weight compromise of any V engine. When you start going beyond 8 cylinders the cost compromise worsens again except in the case of very large capacity industrial engines like those fitted to trucks, trains, or ships or as static engines for use in electrical generators or pumps.
