  • #Dermatologist #DrDray gives 11 tips for eczema on the face. Eczema on the face can be worsened by things that come in contact with the skin. See your dermatologist for evaluation and treatments for eczema on the face. Take a break from nail polish, manicures, and artificial nails, as these may cause eczema on the face. Also take a break from makeup and fragrance. Ingredients in hair care products can cause eczema on the face, so scale down the number of hair care products you use. Make sure to get good sleep and manage stress. Stress and poor sleep worsen eczema. Check in with your healthcare provider and/or allergist because seasonal allergies and eczema go hand in hand. Use gentle cream cleansers and moisturizing balms free of fragance. Also, get a cool mist humidifier for your bedroom at night!

Y’all - as someone who has suffered months and months of having painful dry patches that were seeping liquid on my face, and being so stressed and ashamed by my appearance, I’ve learned some things on my journey:
    - switch to non-fragranced moisturizer such as Vani-cream (this comment used to say CeraVe but they changed their products 😞) and apply it religiously, every morning and evening ESPECIALLY in the winter months
    - avoid certain foods such as eggs
    - avoid excessive heat/hot showers,
    - look into taking Yeast-cleanse supplements, and different probiotics (I’m by no means a doctor, but there’s some evidence that some types of eczema is caused by yeast)
-as Dr. Dray mentioned, try to double-down on fragrance as much as possible, but also silicone (common in makeup)
-STOP using beauty-blenders (instead use the SIGMA flat kabuki brush, which is AMAZING- I clean all my brushes at least every 3 days with baby shampoo)
    - lower makeup use (stopped using thick foundation, and I never touch maybelline mascaras- lots of chemicals and a big trigger)
    - instill habits that are calming, such as meditation, walking, and yoga
    -incorporate anti-inflammatory foods
    -lower exposure to pet dandruff/dust
-if your partner smokes, ask them to wash their hands/brush teeth after (that was a big trigger for me until we discovered it)
    - if you exercise, moisturize an hour before, and right after you’re done, wash your face gently and use a cold compress (they have reusable face masks you can place in the freezer) and place it on your face for about 5-10 minutes
    - cool and room-temperature drinks are your friend
    - drink lots of water
    - take an allergy pill when you feel a flare up coming on (Allegra is my favorite, and many of the pharmacists I know recommend it)
-when I feel a flare-up coming on, I take a large amount of Cerave moisturizer and layer it on my face, like a mask before I go to bed
    -get regular sleep 😴
-limit interaction with people who are major triggers of stress, for instance, one of my family members was very abusive, and just being in the same room as him could make me flare up - seeking therapy and distancing myself as much as possible really helped me find peace (and lowered my flare-ups incidentally)
I still have red spots sometimes, but I’ve noticed a MASSIVE difference. Hope this helps.
EDIT: A year later, it really warms my heart that people are still finding this helpful.
Also-- I've heard of some people saying that CeraVe changed some ingredients and is now causing acne (I hate when companies change what is already good!)
Other moisturizers for sensitive skin (that don't have harsh chemicals/break you out) include: Vani-cream (AMAZING and cost effective!), First Aid Beauty ORIGINAL no fragrance Ultra Repair Cream, and Summer Fridays Jet Lag Mask (I use it as a heavy moisturizer in the evening sometimes and it never breaks me out.)
Also the incorporation of non-fragranced and "free and gentle" detergent for washing clothes, towels, and sheets also helps. Stay safe and take care of yourselves, wishing all of you the best. 💛

Also, avoid fragrance in detergents you use in the house. Stop using softener for your clothes. Wash your bedlinen more often and use pure cotton. No wool and other ichy fabrics. That’s my tip.🙂

Nanna T I was wondering if stress and crying was a flare up for anymore. I don’t have eczema but my 2 year old does and we recently quit the pacifier which has resulted in a lot of stress and crying at naptime. I noticed one day after an attempted nap that he had 2 new eczema patches on his back, and a few days later (after another attempted nap) he had a few patches under his armpits

I started getting acrylic nails because I hoped the extra thickness would reduce damage to my skin from scratching. Good to know they might actually be contributing to the problem!

This makes so much sense! When I was pregnant my undiagnosed chronic skin condition on my face and scalp went away, and it came back after I had the baby. I didn’t paint my nails while I was pregnant, but did shortly thereafter so this may likely be why.

You cannot guess how extremely helpful this video is! I saw a dermatologist, I went through all kind of allergy tests but all they can say is that I have allergy to carbamix (what this means and what components are listed under this term I found out all by myself) and recommended to use a corticoid creme. These advices were helpful only for a limited time. The eczema repeated once I finished with prescription cream and turned into contact dermatisis :( I will now follow your advice and I hope these will end my problems... thank you very much 🙏🏻❤️

Hi Dr. Dray! I loved this video! Could you please make a video on nails? I have noticed vertical dark lines forming along my nailbed this year and I wondered what this was and if it could be reversed, or if this is simply an age-related change in people with darker pigment. My GP said it was nothing, but my GP also said I don't need to wear sunscreen given I have darker skin...so...ahem...I'll take your advice over his on this one! :)

As always, these are really helpful tips! I developed eczema around my eyes last year and my dermatologist recommended that I try to narrow down the cause of my irritation. The main culprit turned out to be my laundry detergent! I switched to All Free and Clear and the itching was gone in a few days. I also found that any type of fragrance is a no-go (Dr. Dray drives that point home for a reason). CeraVe and Paula's Choice (no fragrance!) products have saved my skin.

I appreciate all your advice on dealing with facial eczema. Mine is definitely allergy related (ragweed is my nemesis). I try to get ahead of it by starting my allergy meds several weeks before ragweed pollen arrives. I find (for me) that wearing makeup actually makes the inflamed areas improve and look better, probably because it creates a barrier between my skin and the pollen. One of the things I notice about my eczema/dermatitis spots is that I often have matching spots on either side of my face. I have no idea whether that’s normal or not...just a little weird. Thanks for sharing another helpful video. 😃

Extra tips for anyone with a little one suffering from body eczema flare ups - make sure you only put them in cotton pajamas to sleep and try putting the pajamas on inside out, so the seams don't irritate them more.

In a moment of weakness, I strayed from my tried and true Aveeno gentle oat cleanser and tried something else to wash my face. While no "bad stuff" appeared on the ingredient list, clearly something it contained is an allergen of the highest order for me. The crusting, oozing lesions (sorry!) went from under my chin all the way up my jaw and into the area above my ear, all on the left side where I probably missed an area while rinsing cleanser off, so it stayed on and did its damage. OMG what a nightmare. Thanks for devoting this video to eczema, it felt supportive while providing good info on this awful skin condition.

They say health care in Canada is so good, and I do appreciate it for the most part, BUT ... it's not easy to get a referral to na dermatologist these days. Several years ago I had the worst eczema flare of my life. The reason was I had unknowingly damaged my skin barrier, and as you said, was continuing to expose my skin to items that caused dermatitis. It was so bad I had infections in both eyes and was on oral antibiotics and prescription ointments and drops for my face and eyes. I saw my regular doctor and asked for a referral to a dermatologist. I couldn't get an appointment for over 2 months, and by the time I saw the specialist, it had cleared up, and left permanent disfigurement. I asked for patch testing and was told they don't do that anymore unless it's a life threatening allergy.
It was so frustrating because I was suddenly reacting to everything that touched my skin, even makeup I had used for ages with no issues. I was the one to figure it out, not doctors, and it was via Google and TH-cam videos I realized I was over exfoliating and damaged my skin barrier. I was never even asked about my cleansing routine, and at the time was using an Olay spin brush with a physical exfoliating cleanser twice a day, and around my eyes, too. So, thank you Dr. Dray for educating so many people.

@@JusticeForWilmien I really keep it very simple to avoid irritation. Albolene cream cleanser, CeraVe hydrating cleanser, CeraVe in the tub on damp skin. Kalala you might want give Ceramedx a try. I love the lotion, not the tub as much. I don’t know why but I find it more moisturizing and more gentle than CeraVe. Ceramedx also has ceramides. I buy it at Sprouts and it is a little more expensive than CeraVe but goes on sale regularly. It is also cruelty free and not sure but it may be vegan. Another good lotion with ceramides, but more expensive, is Paula’s Choice Daily Replenishing Body Cream, it’s so gentle I use it as my night time moisturizer on my face. I think “Mr Kong’s Mom” said she likes for excema on her arms.

I had 2 different types of occasional eczema on my face and neck. I had effective prescription meds but I'd rather not have any episodes. The dermatologist recommended fragrance free laundry detergent. I like my usual detergent and was reluctant to change so I tried the cheapest free and clear detergent at Walmart. I decided to use it on my sheets and towels since they contact my face and neck. I was skeptical but when I went almost a year without a problem I was shocked. I use the same detergent for my dog's bedding and towels too. I should mention that all my skin care products were fragrance free to begin with. I travel with my own pillow and if that's not possible, I take a pillow case.

Soooo true, about stuff, you put on your hands. I had such problems with inflamed eyes, a while ago. The culprit turned out to be my footlotion with SA/urea. What little remains on the fingers (or maybe under the nails) must have been enough, to trigger a reaction just from maybe carelessly scratching myself or something. I always make sure, to scrub my hands and nails clean, after applying it, now.

Hello Dr. Dray. I just recently purchased the CVS clear zinc 50 per your recommendation and I absolutely love the feel and look of it. My only concern is that is the 5% zinc oxide and 4% octocrylene enough of sun protection to have that as my daily go-to sunscreen (provided that it is reapplied every 2 hours of course)? I ask bc other sunscreen have much higher percentages of active ingredients. Thank You!

I started wearing makeup at age 13 and wore it religiously. Eventually I got eye eczema in my early 20s. I tried to deal with it for over a year, then in desperation I finally decided to stop wearing makeup for a week to see if it made a difference. It totally did! I stuck with it for a month and it was sooo much better! I was able to simplify my skincare routine (bye Lush!) and pare down my makeup to just some basics (which does include eyeshadow primer and eyeshadow!) and my eyes are back to normal for almost 10 years now. I’m so glad I did that makeup free month! Even if I couldn’t wear makeup anymore, it’s worth it just to not deal with the horrible painful burning flaking unsightly eczema on the eyelids!

A big tip is to wear cotton gloves overnight to avoid scratching whilst sleeping. I velcro mine on to stop them falling off and doubly benefit by using thick creams on my hands (under the gloves) overnight. I had an eczema flare that started in early January on my neck, but after six weeks of using my normal treatments it would not clear up. I had to get a stronger steroid cream from my General Practitioner (UK) and it cleared up within a week. I rarely use steroid creams, as I normally manage the eczema fairly well by diligently moisturising head to toe twice a day. I'm reluctant to use steroid creams regularly, but will use them if I am unable to manage without them. I have been unable to isolate the cause of the flare and stopped using every possible topical culprit. I have introduced my favorites one by one carefully with no issues, so it doesn't appear to be product related. Oh well it will remain a mystery. I only wear sterling silver jewelry as costume pieces often make me itch. Triggers can be different for everyone, but moisturising really well on a daily basis definately helps. Best wishes.

I have learned from dealing with eczema that trial and error is probably the best way to go. I have used so so many creams that did not work, vanicream, ave o, eucerin, dove, dollar store, VS, and finally landed on Cetaphil which improved my eczema BUT it wasn’t until my sister recommended Cerave that I finally realized I wasn’t at the “finish line” yet. It has taken one day of applying Cerave cream to clear up almost all of my eczema patches that have been lingering on my skin for MONTHS. Trial and error may be too risky for some people but in the end you have to do what works for you and your skin. Acne is another thing, I used so many acid cleansers targeted towards acne and then one time I was low on money and used a plain bar of soap for a week which cleared up most of my acne, month went by and just that bar of soap cleared up all of my acne. Realized that I just needed a mild to regular cleanser instead of a salicylic acid cleanser. Is this going to work for you? Probably, probably not. If you can, don’t be afraid to try new methods. Thanks Dr. Dray for all the education you give us.

I have rosacea which is settled at the moment and am starting to see signs of aging from lack of good skin care in the harsh Australian climate. I'm attracted to this product as its affordable and easily obtained in Australia.

Turns out im allergic to gold and cobalt, which is in a lot of skin care products! After cutting out most of these products, my eczema went away. Also, eczema gets better in the summer and worse in the winter because of the sun, the same way the sun can neutralize acne (apparently.) Ask your dermatologist about doing an allergy test, and look up “ACDS camp.” It’s an dermatology app that you put your allergies into, and it shows you your safe products. I believe you can only access it through a dermatologist, though! Hope this helps!

If you live in countries where you have heaters in winter it makes the air soooo dry that in the morning you can even get a nose bleed... If however you dont want to buy a special humidifier, I remember from my childhood putting a special attachment onto the heater with filtered water that helps to moisturize the room at the same time :)
