This isn't correct, most of the Kamikaze stuff came later after Pearl Harbor and during the open warfare between the US and Japanese fleets, especially so as the Japanese fleets were under growing pressure as the war went worse for them. They didn't have enough pilots, they couldn't reliably carry out normal strikes while avoiding US anti-air (which was very good for the time period) and so they train pilots just enough and give them suicide missions for the glory of Japan/The Emperor. For Pearl Harbor specifically most of the pilots had the potential to make it back assuming they didn't die/get shot down during the mission. Japan also developed and used specialized "long lance" torpedoes for traditional torpedo bombing in shallow waters to great effect. Kamikaze attacks also don't do much against battleships without specialized suicide aircraft basically being guided missiles, instead the impromptu kamikazes were mostly effective against small ships and the wooden decks of aircraft carriers (most still had wooden flight decks during this time).

Asmon and techie, ww2 started for the us when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. They intentionally waited to deliver their declaration of war until just after the Pearl Harbor attack as to not ruin the surprise. The goal was to take our aircraft carriers out of commission so we had no real naval power in the pacific. However by dumb luck none of our carriers were in pearl that day. They did NOT use kamikaze until close to the end of the war and the reason they started doing it was because they had no more trained pilots so instead of teaching them how to land they told them to just crash into our ships. After Pearl they tried to surprise us again at a place called Midway and again the goal was to hit our carriers, but we had broken most of their military code and intercepted transmissions that tipped us off about it. So the US set a trap for them, we position our carriers about 250mi north of Midway and got the planes off the island. We let them come in and start attacking Midway, at which point we had so many different squadrons of planes attacking their carrier group that they essentially couldn't keep up or launch/land any planes. So they lost 5 of their 6 carriers they sent and in one battle we turned the entire tide of the war. Japan was on the defensive for the remainder of the war from Midway onward. Still to this day it's the most decisive battle in naval history.

They did NOT use kamikaze until close to the end of the war and the reason they started doing it was because they had no more trained pilots so instead of teaching them how to land they told them to just crash into our ships. After Pearl they tried to surprise us again at a place called Midway and again the goal was to hit our carriers, but we had broken most of their military code and intercepted transmissions that tipped us off about it. So the US set a trap for them, we position our carriers about 250mi north of Midway and got the planes off the island. We let them come in and start attacking Midway, at which point we had so many different squadrons of planes attacking their carrier group that they essentially couldn't keep up or launch/land any planes. So they lost 5 of their 6 carriers they sent and in one battle we turned the entire tide of the war. Japan was on the defensive for the remainder of the war from Midway onward. Still to this day it's the most decisive battle in naval history.
