Thank you, Rob. I appreciate the info as well as your concise and clear teaching style.
Thank you for the kind words... happy to help :-)
Thanks it worked for me and straight to the point
Beautiful. Well explained and simple. Thanks Rob.
No problem, happy to help :-)
@@RobtheMaritimer: Thanks so much. Feel glad to have a response from somebody that has over 3K viewers. I am just getting started. :)
Wow, I didn't know that!, thanks for the info
Thank you! Very clearly explained!
You're welcome!
very useful. Thank you so much :)
You're welcome!
@@RobtheMaritimer my goodness! I never had a response to a big TH-camr before. I am thrilled. Your channel is very useful. I am your new subscriber now !
Thank you for helping me, I am going to try it out!
Best of luck!
@@RobtheMaritimer thanks, I am making the chapters right now
Great video! Thanks for the clear instructions on adding chapters to TH-cam videos. I have a question: Do you think it's better to use automatic chapters or to add them manually? Which method do you prefer and why?
Thanks! I prefer to add them manually so that I have total control over where the chapters start and what name they're given :-)
@@RobtheMaritimer thanks for guide
Thanks! This helped immensly! Now I can have my viewers find the best cringe parts of the video.
I made chapters on a video on another channel, and it worked. With this channel, it's not working. I copyied exactly the same timestamps, and there's still nothing...
If you've followed all the guidelines and it's still not working, could it be that you haven't verified your channel yet? Please see the following guide that shows how you can get access to advanced youtube features: support.google.com/youtube/answer/9890437
@@RobtheMaritimer Thanks for the tip man! I didn't know I had to do a verification step to access advanced features and I was wondering what I was missing. I'm waiting for the result of their check :)
I'd suggest to add this info to the video or at least in the description since I think many users can benefit from that. Thanks again!
I'm still having issues. I've copied this exactly and cannot get the chapters to pop up. Any tips?
I'm sorry you're having trouble with it... here are some tips... 1) Make sure the first time stamp is 0:00 or 00:00 as the first one MUST start at exactly zero time. 2) In the time stamps you must use a colon (:) and not a semicolon (;) between the minutes and seconds. 3) Make sure you press "Save" after making your changes to your Description before navigating away. 4) Make sure all chapters are at least 10 seconds long. Hopefully that helps :-)
Will the ability to add chapters go away in Camtasia if you are posting the video to TH-cam rather than a webpage? I have to use a workaround to add chapters in Camtasia by Export > Legacy Local File and creating them by using the Table of Contents option. I have previously used the Marker to identify the timestamp.
Yes... The chaptering functionality in Camtasia is only for their custom player (as far as I'm aware... I have never used Camtasia's chaptering feature or their video player). This video concerned adding chapters specifically to a video being uploaded to youtube, whether it was made in Camtasia or any other video editor... and youtube chapters cannot be added inside Camtasia, they have to be added into TH-cam either as you upload the video or by editing it in youtube after uploading. I hope that helps :)
I followed your steps, but I have NO breaks in the Play Bar for my video. Nothing. I don't know why.
I put down 00:00 like you and everyone said. I place a name next to it. Used the colon for the minutes and seconds. All my points are more than 10 seconds apart. I saved it. I got a verified phone number and more than 3 timestamps. My video is in the 30 minutes length.
Even turned on and off the Automatic chapters settings.
Still one big play bar. I know you said in real time, but does it take a while? Especially for someone who hasn't uploaded a video in years? Or due to the size of the video? I tried this before from another video and a few days nothing.
I would love to get the jump points/breaks in my video. I'm at a loss.
UPDATE: Oh... apparently ONE of the reasons chapters can't be added is I need at LEAST 1000 Subscribers to get it to display. I only got 17. lol
Wow, that sucks if true. Or channel performance? I don't know, information I'm finding is inconsistent. :/
It sounds like you've done everything right. I don't believe you need 1,000 subscribers for youtube chapters to work... but with only 17 subscribers that might be a reason it isn't working for you... that ability may not have been activated for your channel yet. I suggest contacting youtube support and see what the issue might be? Sorry I can't be of more help.
@@RobtheMaritimer I mean I mostly watch and favorite videos on YT and posted a video like 3 or 4 years ago.
It’s more of a hobby really. It sucks it’s not a feature everyone has immediate access to, but I still have the time stamp in my description.
So, it’s fine. Thanks for responding. If I post more videos and get more people interested I might get the breaks in the future.
if the video is over 10 mins should we add a 00:00 becuase my video is over 10 mins so should i do that?
you need to add a zero at the beginning no matter how long your video is :-)
it only shows in the description
Make sure you're using a colon ":" between minutes and seconds and not a semi-colon ";" Syntax is very important to make this work :-)
I did everything that was in the video and it only shows in the description

@@RobtheMaritimer I did all the steps and it still doesn’t work
Hi Rob! I don't know why when I hover over the timeline duration thing on my video, it hasn't divide my video into chapters. Does this not work on live-streamed videos? :( Thanks!
Yes it works on videos that originated as live streams but are now "videos on demand", so that's not an issue. Maybe there's an issue with your syntax? Or perhaps your account is not verified yet? That's also a requirement now I believe.
@@RobtheMaritimer hi Rob! Thanks for the fast response! :) I actually did verify this account yet still no update. Where can I find an issue with the syntax? Or should I report to TH-cam? Let me know your best recommendations!
DID NOT WORK LOLS BRO i think I did it the same way but no chapters. thanks dude
And finally, I've heard that if your youtube account is not verified with a phone number, it may not work... so you could try looking at that as well. Hopefully that helps :-)
I've done exactly this (including making sure the chapters are all longer than 10 seconds), but the chapters still don't show up...
That's really strange... I've never had a problem with them not showing up... unless I make changes to the description and forget to click to save the changes? Also, make sure the FIRST timestamp is 0:00 or 00:00... the first one must start at exactly zero time. I can't think of another reason it wouldn't work. I do know the formatting of the time codes is super important... it must be a colon (:) and not a semicolon (;) between the minutes and seconds. Does any of that help?
A couple other requirements I found that may help: you must have at least 3 timestamps for it to work... and the timestamps MUST be in order from first to last... so the times must be ascending as you go down through the list.
@@RobtheMaritimer oh i found my mistake its full stop I'm using instead semi colan. thanks you
