Zelda A Link to the Past: Changes from SNES to GBA (10th Anniversary Youtube Remake)

  • As my channel is about to turn 10 years old very soon, here is a video to celebrate. Unlike the Super Mario 64 N64 vs DS remake, this one was remade to improve the presentation
    Time stamps:
    (0:47) Title Screen and File Select
    Yep, a slow paced segment but it includes footage from the Super Famicom JP (V1.0) version.
    (3:49) Sprite Design and Gameplay Mechanics
    The first part covers most of the graphic tweaks and the second part covers the majority of gameplay mechanic tweaks
    (27:28) Japanese V1.0 Super Famicom Changes
    A special section to cover that all of the tricks used in the original JP V1.0 versions were tweaked in later releases
    (36:09) Level Design
    Unlike Mario 64 and even Sonic 1 8-Bit, the level design was 95% faithful.
    (39:23) GBA exclusive content
    In previous CHANGES videos, I tend to ignore this segment because they were technically additions but now I think it's a wise idea to add it to show the bonus incentive for veteran players.
    (57:41) Original Credits
    I didn't cover the staff credits because different GBA Versions have different staff members. For example, the US GBA version mentions Bill Trinen but that got replaced by European Localisation staff in the European GBA release. So I only focused on Light World name changes and the number of plays/saves at the very end.

    Great comparison🥰. I’ve been trying to figure out for the past 2 years what people love so much about the SNES version more than the GBA. I get that the resolution of the SNES is far larger than the GBA, but I knew there was something else about the GBA that speaks more “HD” quality in my eyes than the SNES. This video finally explains it.
    For the sound chips, SNES is definitely far better than GBA. You can hear more instruments in it crisp and clear. But somehow, I love the watered down version of the GBA more. Only a personal opinion of mine, but the GBA in a way turned some notes into basses, which I always loved to hear.
    And I love that particular soundtrack in GBA more in the parts where you finally saved each maiden after a boss fight. It sounded more magical and I felt like Link was somehow holding a giant shining diamond.

    Wow the GBA port is great! They've provided quality of life improvements while sacrificing small details from the original SNES version. I had both versions growing up but I prefer the SNES version for the sound and bass. Its also the version I played when I was 8 before playing the gba version when I was 14. Nostalgia is a heck of a drug.

    This game traumatized me in many ways.. the boss battles when i was a child were some of the hardest battles ever.. the themesong during such only added to the trauma and yet i still believe is one of the best themesongs of boss battles yet.. the same goes when picking up the stuff they were guarding like the pendants that represent the Triforce and the Crystals that hold the Sage Descendants imprisoned.. the fanfare that indicates you have overcome these battles and emerged victorious is one of the many reasons A Link To The Past will remain my all-time favorite of any game. *holds coffee mug* change my mind

      @@Greenalink I found a wrong warp glitch on the GBA version (discovered on real hardware) with the overworld camera glitch you showed in one of your videos. I fell in one of Skull Woods hole entrances while Link was out of the center of the camera and depending on the position of Link on the screen I would fall into in specific rooms from other dungeons and areas. The areas I got warped into were Eastern Palace at the entrance, a cave in Death Mountain, another Death Mountain cave, the bug kid's room (no music was playing and when I exited there was still no music), the cave on the ledge above the graveyard, the cave right of the graveyard where Lake Hylia is, the Sanctuary, and Ganon's room (sometimes you fall into out of bounds but if you're in the right position on the camera you fall into the room and can fight him). Specific positions also cause the game to crash like what happened in the video. I tried this with the other holes that aren't Skull Woods entrances but it didn't work and I just fell into the room where the hole leads to normally.
      UPDATE: I went into a different Skull Woods hole and it took me to a new location that wasn't any that I mentioned before. I warped to the left entrance of Hyrule Castle, a Dark World Death Mountain Cave, Link's House (the screen was black and I couldn't see anything until I left), as well as some other caves.

    Whoa, this should be interesting.
    12:32
    What do you mean? I wonder why the glitch happens in the first place?
    13:32
    That crash noise though.
    16:24, 32:38
    Wow, that nasty long high-pitch beep.
    18:30
    Same as 12:32.
    25:19
    That's an oversight that they could've caught that the first time if you ask me.
    30:21
    That seems kind of hard to do though.
    33:09
    So, it softlocks the game if you do that in the GBA version, right?
    44:31
    Well, the answer sounds kinda obvious.

    Check this out for all differences (especially general changes and audible/visual changes): strategywiki.org/wiki/The_Legend_of_Zelda:_A_Link_to_the_Past/Version_differences
    Many extras are small but convenient tweaks. I played both versions but I have to say I wouldn't want to miss those tweaks. As for the music, just play it with headphones on the GBA or DS Lite, it's good enough. And the screaming didn't bother me, after all Link makes a sound when getting hit, so why not making one when swinging the sword.

  • @yodude8161
    @yodude8161 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    You forgot perhaps one of the biggest changes. The master sword is shorter in length in the GBA version. It's the same size as your first sword which to me was really lame.
    when you first hear about the master sword you get all these expectations. It's not only a sword that's more powerful it's a longsword as opposed to the shortsword you get from your uncle.
    So of course a longsword is naturally longer. It also does double the damage of your first blade. This was a huge implication in the fact not only did you do more damage now but at full health you shot sword beams. also your reach to do damage was now extended.
    oddly enough though when you held the sword for a spin attack it shrunk down to the size of a smaller sword. However in the GBA version the master sword is always that small length which was a real lame change if you ask me.

    I just watched this entire video and it was awesome but i need one thing cleared up.. you mentioned that the 2nd part of the credits after beating the palace of the four sword has different music 54:55 ..and i hear it in this video but I dont remember hearing that at all when i beat it before, then i looked it up and im not the only one, the first video i found of someone else beating the palace of the four sword and getting to the 2nd part of the credits music also DID NOT play the music that you have here in this video.. is there a reason for this?

    • @Greenalink
      @Greenalink  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      After making this video. It turns out that the music played during the second half of the Palace of the Four Swords ending is based on the region of the game.
      USA (first release) doesn't have the track at all.
      Japan and Europe (released a little later) have the new track.

    Missed the difference between GBA fake light/dark world and SNES fake light/dark world.
    SNES fake light/dark world is disabled on a screen transition, whereas GBA fake light/dark world persists (hence the early golden sword + silver arrows).

    Is simple ram corruption the only explanation to that room? I remember actually finding the wall glitch on my own on the GBA and wandering into that room. Yes now coming here I know its ram corruption which is rather interesting. But WHY that room? Especially in two different forms (SNES/GBA). * I did not know it corrupted there on the SNES until watching this xD*

    Am I wrong, or does the forest animals only appear in the forest before pulling out the Master Sword? I may be wrong, but I believe in the SNES version the tunic doesn't change to what tunic Link is wearing when a bunny, it just stays green. I believe the GBA changes the tunic for bunny link to what tunic link is supposed to be wearing. I may be wrong in both of these comments though.

    • @Greenalink
      @Greenalink  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The bunny part is a false fact.
      In the GBA version, the playable bunny Link is always green regardless.
      Only the carvers statue of the bunny can be red.

    Wait, there's a GBA exclusive dungeon?

    • @0neDoomedSpaceMarine
      @0neDoomedSpaceMarine 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes. A lot of people probably never saw it, because you needed to beat Four Swords to enter it, and Four Swords was multiplayer only. It's also hard as all hell, four previous bosses make a return, as powered up versions, which is nice because those bosses weren't actually very hard to begin with, so being stronger and having twists I think was nice.
      At the end you fight four Shadow Links (not four at once, thank goddamn god), and they're near merciless. I was hoping you'd get something out of it, but it seems that you don't, besides the added challenge (some of the puzzles are nicely esoteric).
      There are tricks to get into the dungeon without playing Four Swords though, such as using a cheat device or emulator cheat to toggle the right bit so the game thinks you're allowed in, or a walk through walls cheat. There's also a glitch maneuver you can do to pass underneath the floor through the 4th Dark World dungeon.

    Anyway, it looks like the GBA version is about 95% superior to the SNES version(unless you really like exploiting glitches and bugs). It's amazing to see just how many little things they fixed or improved. They really payed attention to every little detail in the game, and that's why I find it REALLY odd that they actually removed the debree coming down after bombing a dirt wall. Maybe it was accidental?

      It is like playing the normal, except its much harder, so much harder.
      The corrupted files have only one life unit (GBA only, SNES can't handle corrupted files), that is equal to half a heart in this game and Z1, but a quarter in future games.
      The thing that also makes it hard is if you're new to LTTP, you don't know where the items are.
