Redcat Racing Volcano EPX metal upgrades and my costs

  • * Note that the Dukono wheelie bar requires trimming to fit under the slot where the rear bumper slides under and cutting the body to clear. I added sheet metal and screws going all the way through for reinforcement since it can take the full weight sometimes.
    With the brushless upgrade, this RC can get out of my control and I have broken most of the parts that I have upgraded except for the shock towers and differential boxes. I have wanted to get an all aluminum RC and this was a perfect oppoortunity.
    I am really surprised how easily and cheaply you can upgrade this RC. Parts are available on ebay, Amazon, Banggood & Aliexpress. I suppose that is due to the fact that it's been on the market a few years under at least four brands that I am aware of - Redcat, HPI Racing Maverick Strada MT, Exceed RC Infinitive and HSP 94111 Brontosaurus. Of course that last name makes no sense at all! I know the brushed version is no speed demon but it isn't that slow either. It's probably inline with all the others in that class.
    I could upgrade the shocks to aluminum but I don't think it will improve the suspension because it is already quite good.
    I do need to upgrade the tires as one is already coming unglued. I would like tires that don't balloon much for better controlled accelaration. If you have any recommendations please comment below.
    Detailed costs listed below and parts shown at end of video. Parts correspond to the letters listed. Additionally, you will have to add M3 machine screws to replace the self tapping screws normally used in plastic parts.

      There are plenty of speed options depending only on how fast you want to go. I went with a brushless ESC and motor using a Traxxas Velineon system in my previous video -> th-cam.com/video/nMDp4XIPiUM/w-d-xo.html
      This gets about 45mph in my previous video -> th-cam.com/video/WtWaybRwiqc/w-d-xo.html
      That system was an older version leftover I had and it cogs too much for me so I am searching for a replacement. This is a 36mm X 55mm 3500KV motor with a 3.175mm shaft diameter and there are many options available everywhere depending on just how much you want to pay.
      Keep in mind that when you do these things, parts not intended for so much stress will break . . . but I find that part of the hobby fun!

    Waste of money on all of the aluminum parts. $50 for the plastic suspension from the Nitro version. Its very durable and much lighter. Aluminum shock towers and diff housings are the only aluminum parts to buy. The aluminum parts bend or break. They don't have any give to them. They are also almost always floppy and loose.

      I can respect that we have differrent priorities on where we want to spend our money.
      One thing about going all metal, you have to loctite everything or they will vibrate loose much sooner than later.

    I have a redcat volcano exp yes I am a newbie but I’ve been watching a lot of vids and your vids are detailed and impressive. My question is I start low so once I start to upgrade I have the knowledge I want to upgrade the volcano motor to brushless and yes I will upgrade with the suggested mods what’s a good start of motor

    • @lesdmess845
      @lesdmess845  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well it's half the fun learning as you go and tear up parts. The Redcat Volcano Pro brushless setup uses a 3300kv 540 size motor and a 2S to 3S brushless ESC like a Hobbywing WP 10BL60 can probably give you a big boost. In my initial Volcano vid - th-cam.com/video/kTHViTjZC-I/w-d-xo.html I was using a Traxxas Velineon system I had lying around. I would suggest that if you can get the matching pair - ESC & motor, then it may be less work as hopefully the connections between the two - as well as the batteries you are using, are already made. Otherwise, your soldering skills may be needed.
      Good luck and try not to tear too many parts all at once . . . ;-)

      So as long as the esc and motor are compatible and of course the proper battery then this is half the battle and of course beating up the rc and learning along the way. I have a question because I am in search of a good combo to get going in upgrading my redcat volcano exp brush motor what do you think of this th-cam.com/video/8xYddj9mTuY/w-d-xo.html

    • @lesdmess845
      @lesdmess845  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AnotherLevel4You That seems made for scale crawlers as it can go real slow and maybe have a topspeed of 20mph? Of course you can't upgrade the motor or ESC separately if you wanted to. It's definitely on the expensive side and it is more compact but there's room on the Volcano. Search on ebay or amazon for a "540 brushless 60a esc and motor" will turn up a lot of options well under $100. If you want to be on the safe side you can look for Redcat volcano brushless esc and motor even.

    Wassup, I just subscribed. I have the same exact truck as you do but in Gold plated. I went through hell trying to find this part in gold. Your video shows the black plastic part by the gear box. That piece will be the 1st to break and will break again. I looked into my order history and should be this part # on ebay. 102040 122040 Ackerman Plate HSP RC On-Road Car/Buggy/Truck 02074 Upgrade 1:10
    Or if not then this part # on ebay.com

    Or
    RC 02017 Gold Suspension Arm Brace 2Pcs Fit HSP 1:10 On-Road Car Buggy Truck
    Redcat never amitted their error for missing this part in their manual. I hope this helps. Please make another video after you replace that plastic part into purple aluminium. I have not installed the gold part myself yet because I don't have a comfortable place to take it apart. Look in 12mm to 17mm extender for bigger tires. I love the all metal noise when i was running mines. I love this truck so much I would build it in every color and put it in front of my imaginary Shop with neon lights. BTW, I also recommend this part # 2pcs 106015 Universal Shaft Drive Joint Silver Steel for HSP RC 1:10 Model Car

      In my search, the 102040 122040 Ackerman Plate you list is part of the Hobbypark 102057 Aluminum Servo Saver Complete Set I list (L) and show at 3:37 so I am good there.
      The only plastic under there now will be replaced by the part you list as 122034 Rear Anti-Spuat Plate and I will replace that because my wheelie bar is anchored to it through the chassis. It took me awhile to find that because as you say, it is not listed in Redcat's docs.
      I will go with the 106015 Universal Shaft you listed if I break another of these.
      I also recently added a Flysky FS-GT5 gyro transmitter/reciever to better control the steering due to the overpowered motor. The 20Kg steering servo and aluminum servo horn really takes advantage of this.
      I agree with you that this is not only a very good driving car but it really is a great show car too. I want to paint a body in purple - Purpla Haze or Purple Rain, use magnetic body mounts and add those purple body glow lights. I can't get over the availability of quality parts for great prices!

      Yes I saw that on AliExpress about 2 weeks ago and was really shocked that I had to order all the parts not as a package over a year ago. This vehicle is amazing. I don't think I ever can go back to plastic. All of you should get the 12 millimeter hex adapter to 17 millimeter hex adapter and then put smaller wheels then it will drive like a buggy. I have also ordered this Universal drive shaft which is adjustable to 120 mm. Copy and paste into AliExpress. "HSP 94111 94108 94107 94106 94118 Universal joint steel shaft can be adjusted cvd 110MM - 120MM 106015 108015". AliExpress also have the all-aluminum buggy and they also have the carbon fiber drifting vehicles for good prices without electronics which makes me want to buy all of them in all different colors just for a collection. I was charging my LiPO batteries not using the balancing cable with the regular charge mode instead of balance charge and the battery exploded after several times and then it happened again five days later but without the explosion only fire gushing out from the battery and burnt my plastic Redcat terremoto 10 V2 so that is why I can never go back to plastic. Every RC lover should own this vehicle or at least test drive a all metal/aluminum vehicle.
