I generally dislike what I would describe as an obsession in society with putting these labels on different types of personalities.
However, when you break it down the way you do you make it interesting even to me.

Aragorn is the ultimate Sigma chap (so I once read). He lives a life as a ranger and develops resilience and resourcefulness, yet respects and is tuned in with his environment, Furthermore he is selffless (a healer) and does not shrink from responsibility when he is called upon, A paragon of a fellow. Great vid, Ash. Spot on x

Agree with most everyone here - an excellent, informative video. SIGMA according to the definition you provided. As a young U.S. Marine (1968) I became aware of of what we are now calling SIGMA as compared/contrast to my fellow USMC. I just thought of it as 'similar but different' and called it resolved. I enjoy your videos very much, Ash.

Interesting that Clint Eastwood is mentioned as a classic Sigma male. Only the other day I watched an interview with one of his fellow actors. Apparently, when directing, he would never shout "ACTION!" like so many other directors, he would just say "Go ahead!" quietly.

After being out of office this week your video really were spot on on my thought. I have tried to build my character by seeing, talking and praising them around me that can be a bit invisible like janitors, maids, bartenders and servers.
When done genuine I have made great connections that any alfa male going to miss out of. Respect, acknowledgement and just being a peer goes so long.
So again, thank you Ash for this great video.

From what I've learned about the "Sigma Male" so far he's closer (and the proximation is the operative idea here) to the Nitzchean definition of the Übermensch - defining his own morality and operating along his own lines.
I personally hold myself to standarts of morality and conduct that I define as apropriate and decent and most of all polite - In essence I try (and sometimes fail, that's normal I think) to combine the values I deem a chap should hold with an open mind and the morality modernity requires (I don't judge, or care about, anyones sexual preferances e.g.).
Mostly I try to be polite unless openly confronted in an aggressive way... here's the point I'm always in danger of loosing it, but there's a rather complicated interplay between my physical state and morality at work here.
And I will be honest here: I *despise* the machistic definition of the "Alpha" (aside from the fact the alpha *animal* is the one that takes care of the *Group* first and foremost...) and to me it's nothing less than a complete failure in being decent and.... oh... *human* because as a cultured animal we strife to operate in harmonious groups... the toxic loner eventually fails. It's politeness and selflessness for the group that makes us better, makes us human. And proponents of toxic egocentrism may excell in some fields, but they die alone.
    Best regards

An opinion but not necessarily a valid one. Alpha males tend to be assholes, seeking praise when they don’t deserve it. I’m a Sigma male and I can see through an Alpha within seconds. Alphas are the true losers in this world, unfortunately they don’t seem to realise it!

  • @SirVicc

I think the term alpha is misapplied to people like Tate. In an animal sense he's more beta. Loud, always about puffery and asserting his own interests as loudly as possible. In wolf packs or groups of gorillas, the alphas are quite quiet and chill. They assert their authority when needed, but otherwise quiet and observant. And no one needs to be told who the boss is. The betas are the ones causing trouble and making noise, trying to become the alpha.

I am so annoyed by the pop-cultural misunderstood Alpha - the Alpha ought to lead by auctoritas ("charisma based authority") and has no need to deploy imperium ("the power to compel").

In my humble opinion anyone who labels himself as an Alpha Male is anything but. There are alpha males out there for sure, self-assured charismatic leaders. But anytime I see or hear or even read something from people like Andrew Tate I can´t help but cringe, his constant need to "dominate" everyone around him makes me think he can´t be very sure in himself. Not to mention he seems to be a sh*t human being.
Not an alpha but a yapping dog at best.

My thinking is that it's best to understand and know yourself, and live your life from the inside out. Evaluate yourself on how well you can learn, master what you learn, and be able to share your findings and talents with others. Be a knowledgable, competent, and compassionate man. That can look a number of ways to the world, and it does not matter where you fit on someone's triangle model. The world is always trying to define you, and put you in a box (or triangle). Be able to define yourself and live accordingly. You do this very well Ash, and the world's a better place for it regardless of classification hierarchy.

The greatest victory a person can achieve in his life is his victory over his needs and whims. His need for others and his need to satisfy his animal instincts. The free man is a solitary being and prefers isolation without feeling distressed or in need of others, just like a predatory falcon that soars high and watches from afar.

The socio-sexual hierarchy is a very popular topic for men nowadays. It’s similar to the “old money/quiet luxury” concept in that we’re bombarded with it. (Also, the two often connect.) I was hesitant to watch this at first but I knew there’d be more than the usual hype surrounding the topic. Maybe it’s simply because I gel with The Chaps Guide but this is definitely worth a watch and blows all that other crap out of the water. He in no way dresses or presents himself as a gentleman. However, he is one of the gentlest man I’ve known. If someone needs help he will be the first there. You would think your granny would cross the road to avoid him. He would help her across!

Sorry I’m late, but that’s life. The novelist John Fowles published a book entitled “The Aristos,” Greek for “the best that can be accomplished under the circumstances,” this being a book of sayings he put down at random over the years, one of which was “The world needs people who aren’t joiners.” The more you think about that the more profound and truer
it gets. And I’ve always found it comforting for numerous reasons.
And btw the term “alpha” was coined by wolf biologist Dave Mech, who now regrets that he did, once he realized that wolf packs were basically just family groups, and the reason for the LACK of lethal violence within packs is that when it’s time to hunt a moose it’s “all hands on deck.” On the other hand packs stake out territory and when packs happen to meet at the boundary it’s war. The chance of a wolf being killed by another wolf is about 50%. It ain’t easy being predatory. It gets lonely on top.

I don't believe it's binary, I think we pass through stages of development with the 'volume' of our traits and personality being tuned constantly through the journey of life. The older a person becomes, the more sigma (read characterful, introspective, individual) they become. The forge of personality is time and experience.

You are absolutely right sir. Sigma is a personality type and not a philosophy or mindset. There is no 100% alpha or sigma persons in the real life. But there is a dominant personalty type. So a person can be 40% alpha, 25% beta and 35% delta. His dominant personality type will be alpha, but in real life he won't be an alpha male.

While a Gentleman does enjoy quiet solitude some, or even notable parts of the time, they also enjoy engaging in some social activities, getting out with others, and attending worthwhile events which help them grow and learn. My fear is that the SIGMA movement might reinforce the issues we have with young men isolating from society, their communities, and relationships.

To live life on your own terms, one has to transcend the requirement to trade time for money. By it's very nature, this practice means you're always beholden to someone that "controls the purse". From a Maslow perspective, the Sigma man has attained, or is attaining self actualization. Not needing to report to a boss, company or office is a luxury. Then again you have those that just work to accumulate as much as they can.

@@TheChapsGuide But luck of birth is in itself such a big thing. I was lucky enough to be born and grow up in a country that provided me with a good, free education. That education provided the foundations to everything that I have done and achieved in my life. That I was able to access this education was a matter of luck. What I was able to do was make decisions that enabled me to take advantage of opportunities that presented themselves to me - often simply because I happened to be in the right place at the right time. I am sure that there are millions of people of my generation around the world who are far more intelligent, far more diligent, far more creative or otherwise talented than I am who have not been able to achieve what I have or to lead a life anything like mine simply because they were born into circumstances - for example being born somewhere where they did not have access to even basic education, people who simply haven't had the luck that I have enjoyed. I am absolutely proud of what I have achieved in my life and that is, of course, partly down to me and the decisions I have taken. But I am not too ashamed to recognise the role that luck has played in enabling me to take advantage of the opportunities that luck presented.

We can perceive traits in ourselves and attempt to self aware but this is always a biased opinion. The important thing less how we perceive ourselves, it’s how others perceive us. If we aspire to be the best version of ourselves it’s then for others to decide if they see us as Alpha, Sigma, or anything else

This is more of a monologue or treatise followed by comments and questions. It is less of a conversation. I enjoyed it nonetheless.

The real issue is whether Sigmas get as many women as Alphas. I don't know the answer.

John Wick , much like James Bond is simply a character. However Keanu Reeves does exist and lives outside of the Hollywood Star lifestyle , goes about his life mingling on the trains and streets with everyday folk .

@ I’m aware that he is fictional just like Bond. I said Wick in response to him saying Bond is the most sigma. Ironically, Wick is played by Keanu.

The whole idea of "alphas/betas/sigmas" etc is totally ridiculous. It's just starsigns for incels.

Alpha male is male leader. Simple as that. He needs followers.
He may be leader only only at something, sort of part-time..

Alphas got a bit of a bad reputation here, I see. Don't forget that being dignified, generous, loyal, honest and strong in character are also alpha traits. The difference lies a bit deeper. But the potentially negative sides you listed can also be present in an alpha type, and those ones will be most often avoided by sigmas. But they have their negative sides as well: higher neuroticism, higher sensitivity to negative emotion, also can be a bit indecisive at times, also a bit hard to truly befriend them, because they build trust slowly. But so far as being a gentleman... I think both types can be, although they will turn out to be quite different :) Authenticity is key here. To be unapologetically yourself, whether an alpha or a sigma, or for that matter, a beta type.
