I think what this made clear to me is that the "Invincible treatment" is essentially just the manga-to-anime treatment. Invincible could be a big turning point in having American comics (and western comics generally) get animated adaptations. someone is definitely knocking on Brian K Vaughan's door begging for Saga right now

Klaus works for me partly b/c of the publication gimmick were we only get releases around Christmas, and they're always told in-media-res where characters reference stuff that happened in the proverbial last issue if it was a monthly book, or ages ago in another age of comics.
I loved the one where he fought the corporate icon of Santa and the issue opened with him coming to the aid of a father who realized his kids were missing from their beds.

I think indie comics (in the sense of not-Big 2) are the ones that inspire me the most in terms of being a writer, possibly because I feel, most of the time, they're much more of a pure passionate creative vision than what a lot of the Big-2 stuff end up becoming sometimes. Obviously, someone's run in Batman isn't inherently less valid than the same person's own indie comic, but if they thought the story came to a point where an important character should die, they might not even be allowed to do that on Batman, but on their own comics they can do whatever they want.

I love Invincible esq comic adaptations cause it gives a viewer who hasn’t read the comics an idea of what the story is so they can read the comics and see the difference in the story is. It reminds me of Scott Pilgrim Takes off how it almost felt like a sequel to the comics and the people who watched the movie are now even more inclined to read the books since it will give them a reason to read the original story from the author themselves. It’s why I love OG Dragon Ball’s manga over the anime cause it’s a clear vision of the authors art style and story telling method. Rest in Piece Akira Toriyama

What really sucks nowadays, is that some indie comics DO feel like it's a pitch or a beautifully illustrated bible for a TV show. Geoff Johns' and Gary Frank's Geiger 6-issue series feels that way, and now is being turned into a live action series for Paramount+. A lot of the characters and storylines really felt underdeveloped on purpose so on meetings with the networks they could say "This could be an episode" or "We could go deeper on this in episode 6" on those parts. Now with the "Ground Zero" and the Geiger ongoing series it seems like they're trying to fix those flaws. Let's see if that works out.

I've only heard of a few of these comics and now I definitely have to update my reading list!
I read through the Invincible comic as the 2nd season was coming out, and I think one aspect of the 'Invincible treatment' that I enjoy the most is how the series gets updated and revised.
not in the 'elevating the medium' way, cause the comic is good as is, but like you said, certain aspects and characters get expanded and fleshed out, and I'd credit that to both time and hindsight on the original creator's time and the benefit of a writing team to bring new insight and perspectices into it. for a medium like comics where it's usually one main writer working with an editor, it makes the biggest difference when it comes to story.
in case this comment wasn't long enough already, one piece of media that I'd want to see get this treatment is the canadian superhero webserial 'Worm' by J.C Mc.Crae or Wildbow. It is really similiar to Invincible in that it's an expansive cape story that deconstructs and reconstructs aspects of the genre in a usually more gritty way- in fact it's my first love when it comes to R-rated superhero media.
It would benefit so much from both a visual adaptation and a 'second-take' ideally with the creator involved. I'd love to see what can be done from taking it from a chapter-by-chapter written serial to a full-fledged series with a team behind it and a substantial animation budget.

I think the unique thing about colorists it that they are able to make a book feel cohesive regardless of who's lining or inking. You could have a drastic change in the style of artists drawing between the flip of a page and so long as that palette is consistent you'll hear minimal complaints from the audience.

I wholeheartedly agree with all you said, especially considering there are so many comics out there no one even hears about due to the majority-takes-all dominance created by the big two (also good to see so many of these comics, especially being so many are on my to-read list :D)
But, being that I have just come off reading issues 1-54, I also think the masterpiece that is "Saga," by Brian K. Vaughan, Fiona Staples, and Steven Finch falls into a very similar niche as The White Trees and I oh so truly hope it gets the "invincible treatment" of an adaptation!

  • @DylanofScreenTime

If I may add to the pile of comics that could be translated well into a different medium: I vote for Diesel, written and drawn by Tyson Hesse.
Sonic fans know that name VERY well (he's the guy who helped fix his movie design, along with many animated features with the hedgehog), but not many know that he created his own book under BOOM! Studios and it seems like a really fun time!
It's a story set in a Steampunk/Pirate world where there's flying ships, a dark undercity, a utopia in the skies and the main character Dee, is trying to find her father's airship (at least, that's what the synopsis for the first novel told me).
Even if I haven't read the comic quite yet (that's going to change, trust me, I'm just poor), I would LOVE for this to be adapted into a cartoon.
A show, while made for kids, is something the whole family can enjoy. The closest I can compare it to is shows like The Owl House, Avatar or Infinity Train with their unique fantasy worlds and interesting but fun characters.
As of right now, the thing I'd be most excited to see brought to life is the art, because HOT DAMN, this world looks pretty! It leans HEAVILY into the steampunk look, where the designs of architecture are bronze, clunky and industrial looking and the added pirate design blends just...so well together.
The character design reminds me of something like Scott Pilgrim, but with dynamic proportions like in Rise of the TMNT.
All in all, I think this would be a FANTASTIC animated show...and I swear to god, I'm going to find this book. THEY SAY IT'S AT BARNES&NOBEL SO I'M HOLDING THEM TO THAT.

This is sorta unrelated, but you may or may not have heard of Ricky Ricotta’s Mighty Robot. Its made by Dav Pilkey, the same guy who made Dog Man and Captain Underpants. Even though its more obscure, i feel like a animated movie based on the comic with that sort of spiderverse-esque by dreamworks would be really cool to see. I haven’t read the books in a while but it does have a more action focused tone, still having some of that juvenile humor of captain underpants. Considering they are making a dog man movie, it’s not completely out of the question. I do love its anime influence in setting and the design of the robot. It’s very clearly based on the Iron Giant

I’ve been meaning to check out a good amount of these. Of the ones I’ve already read: Head Lopper, Something is Killing the Children, Radiant Black are all incredible books.
I also wanna recommend that people check out East of West, Deadly Class, and anything with Jeff Lemire if his the art is something you vibe with and if not read his collaborative work.
I also give special mention to Paper Girls which got a love action show from Amazon with a likeable cast and seemed to have passionate people behind it, but the budget wasn’t there to properly adapt it

A book I would love to see get an animated adaptation and achieve mainstream popularity is "The Antagonists" written by Tyler Martin with art by Giacomo Guida, Matteo Illuminati, and Matteo Illuminati. It's the story of a Black family of retired supervillains that actually do a lot of things popular superheroes already do like murder, (I'm looking at you MCU heroes and movie Batmen), only they do it in the name of Black liberation. Often juxtaposed with the superhero teams deliberately made to be the whitest people imaginable. People say the story is like the Boys meets the Sopranos, so it's a good story for television.

I love all of the different prompt ideas for the stories that seem to be dying to be expanded into longer running series or mini series. It's also a really indie comic and seeing it and any of the authors who contributed to the book get some love would be great.

Obviously the focus here is Indie stuff, but when it comes to the Big 2, there’s one character I think would be really well suited for direct adaptation like this. Wally West’s 90s-2000s Flash runs are designed in a way that’d work really well for an Invincible style adaptation. He actually gets tangible long-term development with a big, consistent supporting cast and a TON of great stories the whole way through. He goes from arrogant hothead, to caring husband, to goofball father, and all the while growing to fill Barry’s shoes and even surpass him. He’s kind of perfect for a longer show directly adapting his comics.

I would like to see adaptations for Irredeemable and Incorruptible.
Irredeemable is both a love letter to old wacky Superman comics while also being a horrific deconstruction of what happens when said Superman goes nuts because everyone placed the burdens of the world on his shoulders solely because of his power, not his fortitude. You can bring the whole Evil Superman thing full circle with the Boys being a more grounded Evil Superman Story, Invincible sitting comfortably in the middle, and Irredeemable being just a straight-up comic book with all the weird and fantastical elements you'd expect to see.
As for Incorruptible, I'd like to see the main character Max Damage be voiced by Sylvester Stallone. I liked him as Nemesis in Samaritan, and his performance after the big twist reveal reminded me a lot of Max Damage.

Ok, in a similar but ultimately unrelated field, I really want marvel to start doing animated movies of some of their less iconic but still popular comics. Similar to the DCAMU and DC's animation team where they had their whole animated schtick, mostly out of continuity, I want marvel to do that. Like, my main wish is an animated trilogy/tetrology around the Krakoan era of X-Men but some other wishes would be Zdarsky's daredevil, maybe a series of short films based on Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross's Marvels, a series of a few films covering the major events from just before civil war through the end of Siege (so Civil War, Secret Invasion, Dark Reign and Siege), Spider-Man: Life Story, and I would be saying X-Men Lifedeath here if we weren't already getting that in TAS so instead I'd like God Loves, Man kills

Some of your choices for Indie comics that deserve animated projects are excellent picks I die to see animated adaptations for comics like Radiant Black, Klaus, Public Domain or Kick-Ass.
Another comic I think would be cool to see get the Invincible treatment is Blacksad, a neo-noir detective mystery comic set in a world of anthropomorphic animals that got a Telltale-esque videogame a couple of years ago. I think the style and stories and grounded stories could really be powerful and dark stories with gorgeous art. If they keep the grim, noir and realistic tone while tackling issues of social class, exploitation of minorities/poverty, government corruption in the era of the Cold War, and so much more, it could be really good and impactful.

A Radiant Black animated series would be absolutely sick because he's such an interesting and underrated character. Another underrated character who needs more attention is Firebreather he's a character in the image comics invincible universe. It's about this a young boy Named Duncan Rosenblatt trying to navigate highschool while dealing with fighting monsters. Duncan is a half human/half Kaiju hybrid torn between two worlds. There's a lot you could do with this as he has so much potential. There was a Cartoon network movie but his comics haven't been continued because the writers don't know what to do with him. An animated series could revitalize the character and give him more depth then ever .

The first book is a bit generic but afterwards it gets good and most characters are really good and many have great arcs (Eragon and Murtagh 🔛🔝).
