    I insist you do impressions in every video from now on.
    B17 Is unplayable on an un-modded Amiga, it was just too ambitious & the same goes for Frontier, which is why I played them mostly on PC. I don’t usually like games that don’t have a goal but Elite & Elite II let you live out a SiFi fantasy & that’s quite compelling.
    Indiana Jones & the fate of Atlantis is another I played on PC because my PC had a hard drive but was so good on the Amiga.
    Cannon Fodder is incredible! It was absolutely one of the best games on the Amiga. (although there was a surprisingly good port to the Game Boy Color.)
    Cool Spot was huge but the Amiga version was just a port of the Atari ST version, so definitely could have been better.
    Globdule is 1 to check out as I’ve never played it as is Gunship 2000, which is odd because it’s very much my thing & the same goes for Heartlight, Perihelion & Transarctica. Thanks for the recomendations.
    Lost vikings is a true classic that I’ve replayed on multiple platforms & so is Micro Machines.
    The Patrician is another game that feels like going to work in your gaming time but I appreciate that’s a me thing.
    You didn’t press fire playing Quak just to see what would happen? 😄
    Simon the Sorcerer was so good & lead directly to the Discworld games, taking it full circle.
    Soccer Kid is so much more fun than it’s odd concept & goofy story would suggest.
    Stardust is too hard to be fun, which is a shame because I love a good Asteroids clone.
    Super Frog deserved to be bigger than it is & should have been a bigger franchise than it is.
    You did really well to rescue the voice audio, it’s noticeable but not a big deal & this was another great video, even if it did have to be a long one by necessity, thanks.

    • @OldAndNewVideoGames

      I can't promise the impressions as they are God awful and just happen in the spur of the moment. Believe it or not but these are actually not pre-written. xD
      Oh, I played Frontier on my A500, I did... Or watched it, as it run so slow. ;) I suppose I was too immersed to just ignore it and even though it run like trash the idea of living in space was something I couldn't let go. And yeah, on PC it was an absolute pleasure to play.
      I initially wanted to use Cannon Fodder's intro at the beginning of this video, it's so iconic after all. But because of the lyrics I finally decided against it as these days you never really know what TH-cam will flag you for... :/
      Globdule was a discovery for me as I've not played it before and it was really fun and refreshing as a platformer. Controls take a little while to get used to but couple of minutes and you'll feel right at home. Perihelion is my personal failure, it is. It's everything I love about gaming, compelling story, sci-fi cyberpunk-ish setting, RPG and turn based tactical combat. And yet, chances are I won't find time to ever get back to it. Heartlight is a true gem. No, TRUE GEM! Honestly. It was never very popular but it's such a great puzzler. The video doesn't give it justice as it shows one of the first few levels but there's so much trial and error there, working those levels out. It's amazing! Honestly!
      And, no, I didn't press fire... I just figured it's one of those run around and grab things jumping over enemies platformer. And you know, I believe I've mentioned the tools and which I am among others. ;)
      And I feel you with Stardust, same here. It's fun but apart from maybe first two levels, I don't think I can beat any other.
      All that said, the question remains. Do you agree that 1993 was the best year for Amiga gaming or do you wanna wait till the series is done to base your decision in part at least on that? :)

      True. It did. But next video, that'll be here tomorrow (on Patreon today later on) that covers 1994 has two missed games from 1993 too. And they additionally prove how great the 1993 was. 1994 is pretty darn good too, if I say so myself. Perhaps not as good but very solid. 1995 that I started picking games for is another case. Some good games there but there's much less titles altogether.

    Many great games here that I enjoyed at the time, and quite a few that I didn't play but wish I had- Arabian Nights, Burntime, Genesia, Globdule, Goal!, Hired Guns, Lionheart (the still shot of it at the start of the video illustrate its brilliant array of colours and nicely drawn graphics), Perihelion, Simon the Sorceror, Wiz'n'Liz (lovely animation and satisfyingly fast movement and scrolling, I had never seen it in action before- those things were quite rare on Amiga platformers) and Yo! Joe!. A few of these games I hadn't heard of at the time, but mostly it was down to being a kid with a limited budget and who prioritised certain genres over others. Early on I was really into beat'em'ups to the degree that I'd play any old tosh, quite frankly, and later it was football games (with Sensi dominating my action football obsession to the neglect of some worthy titles). There are also a number of games in this video, such as Soccer Kid, Walker and Lost Vikings to name a few, that I enjoyed thoroughly on magazine cover disks but which for the reasons mentioned in my previous sentence I didn't buy the full versions of. I wish now, looking back, that I had diverged a bit more from my usual fare. Hired Guns is another prime example (and it puzzles me because I remember drooling over the screenshots and description in magazines, but for some reason didn't consider buying it!). Thankfully my narrow mindedness with buying games was alleviated by my brother's penchant for strategy games, so that I didn't miss out on greats like The Settlers, Frontier, Indiana Jones and Dune 2. 1993 was truly a year of some fantastic games on the Amiga.

    I'm not an Amiga expert but I've been following it for some time, as I love classic computers, it was only not popular here in Brazil, at least, not as nearly as it was in Europe and personally, I never heard about it back then and if I did, I can't remember.
    Emulating it is quite fun but there are some things I think hold the platform back for some odd design decisions. First thing is the control scheme, the lack of buttons is specially noticeable on games that are present in consoles, Desert Strike, Road Rash and many more, games with 3 buttons as a standard would make a whole lot of difference, I mean, surely they would focus on keyboard and mouse for most games, but giving games the ability to natively be used with normal gamepads would be great, and no UP for jumping, except on fighting games. Another thing I noticed, some games either allow you to choose sound effects or background music, I believe it's the case for most earlier titles, but it's still interesting, as I find this machine to have a clean and pleasant sound overall, but choosing one or the other gives an impression of an unfinished project. The obvious here is that, much like any other computer systems from the era, they lack the Japanese touch, so most great games from the era, unfortunately never saw the light of day on this machine, except for ports, but those were handled by western devs and it's noticeable.
    Overall, I find the Amiga quite interesting, it almost feels like the Mega Drive and the SNES combined in the sense that it uses the same CPU family as SEGA's console, but it also feature high resolution for the time and when used properly, the colors surpass what the SNES could do, specially with more details, as the Super Nintendo has almost a Game Boyish native aspect ratio.
    As a side note, an interesting thing I noticed about Super Street Fighter II on both the Amiga and DOS versions, the gameplay is in widescreen, if played in the normal 4:3, the characters and other details gets squished, it's so strange but fun to play in full screen on modern displays.

    • @OldAndNewVideoGames
      @OldAndNewVideoGames  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The thing is originally A500 (before the A500+/A600 were released) came with just a 0.5MB of RAM, which for the first couple of years was not enough to have both sound and music during gameplay. Quite quickly though most users realised that you really want to have a full 1MB of memory available and when the trap door loaded upgrade cards became more popular, most games not only allowed for both sound and music but also required 1MB to run.
      OCS/ECS (most wide-spread in A500/500+ and 600) couldn't do more than 32 colours when sprites and movable objects were on the screen. By design. That doesn't mean that some developers didn't found a way to go around it. Good example would be Universe, a point'n'click adventure that used 256 all at once with scaling sprites. But for the most of Amiga's lifetime 32 were the standard, some games mixed copper and could sorta get 64 in EHB mode with moving objects but both these and those that allowed for even more where singular cases. Most likely easy to count on both hands. 4096 colours on static screens however were no problem but that wasn't usable during gameplay though just for some load screens and such.

    • @roberto1519
      @roberto1519 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@OldAndNewVideoGames Makes sense, developers made some games more colorful than the SNES at times. Good point on static images being more colorful due to it all being a static image.

    • @OldAndNewVideoGames
      @OldAndNewVideoGames  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@roberto1519 Yeah, 64 colour mode was EHB (Extra half bright) so 32 colours + another 32 shades of same colour. 64 in total but in reality it was 32 colours in two shades. Meaning they couldn't be *any* 64 colours.
      And 4096 colour mode was HAM (Hold and modify) and this could pretty much be any colours as long as they kept to certain rules, meaning at some times you had small graphical artifacts as changing from one colour to another could take 2 or 3 pixels horizontally.

    • @roberto1519
      @roberto1519 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@OldAndNewVideoGames Interesting, in some ways it feels like an enhanced Mega Drive, there's a PAL exclusive F1 for the MD which is pretty impressive and a Kawasaki game using the same engine, maybe it was ported from the Amiga. With TH-cam we learned a lot in the last years about obscure video games, such as the Sharp X68000, which is to me the rich cousin of the Mega Drive, it also uses the x68000 CPU but with expanded video and sound capabilities, though that was even more expensive than an Amiga, I believe.

    • @OldAndNewVideoGames
      @OldAndNewVideoGames  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@roberto1519 All three actually used the same CPU in their first versions. Well, MD used the same out throughout its whole lifespan but that's a console so it's hard to compare it to computers. That said X68000 was famous for its arcade conversions which were often near perfect. Still, all three machines are good in their own right.

    I think 1992 and 1993 are pretty close in terms of great games. :)
    With the exception of the mobile app, I've never played Lemmings beyond the first and the Holiday edition. And those were plenty tough. :D
    Your story about Qwak and not knowing you could fire is cute. :D And I'm sure we've all been there, overlooking some obvious mechanic in a game. Also, ducks! :D

      They sure are, but for me, at least on the Amiga, 1993 was the best.

      @@OldAndNewVideoGames Well, you know the games on the Amiga better than me, so I concede to your opinion. :)

      @@OldAndNewVideoGames So it should be, as it's a personal opinion. :) But still an informed one, so I trust it to be quite accurate to reality.

    Transarctica was actually heavily inspired by a different French series - The Ice Company (La Compagnie des glaces), rather than Snowpiercer (which first came out about two years after the first Ice Company novel - in fact, there were already 7 books or so in the series by then :D ). There are definitely some surface similarities between the settings, both being about an ice age world with trains - though Ice Company cares a lot more about making the setting believable, while Snowpiercer only really has it as background fluff to explain why one train is all that matters.

      Sounds like a fun series. Is it still running? And/or purchasable outside of France?

      @@OldAndNewVideoGames It ended in 1992, but it's still 62 books, so there's plenty of material - though these are serial books, so not exactly Dune in size :D
      Amazon has the first book in the series in English. They have others, but it seems only in French. Many of them were published at one time or another in lots of languages (we did have about 40 in Czech), but it's definitely not easy to get hold of.
