    Thank you for making this series, it has introduced me to an entire catalogue of games I never knew existed and many games I want to track down and play. This series deserves far more views. The fact this isn't just a list of Amiga games but a historical cataloguing year by year is commendable, it shows a real passion for the system and the creators of these games.
    I don't use patreon but I will have to send some sort of compensation for such an entertaining series of videos.

      Thank you very much! I know it sound like a cliche but I'm really glad you liked it. And since you do, let me assure you that after the last episode which is due sometime this week, after couple weeks break with shorter videos there will be a supplemental one covering 1996 and after. Or there was supposed to be one actually but plans changed slightly. As I was picking the games for it today at my day job on a downtime I realized that since it's nearly three decades there are far more games to cover than I predicted. So, it may end up splitting into two or three supplemental episodes. But that's in a little while. Also, I may make another of those year by year approaches for other systems. Currently considering DOS, Sega Genesis or C64. Leaning towards DOS a little as I've a lot of experience with it and more fresh memories than with C64. Genesis is cool too but there's hardly going to be 10 years there to cover. That all however is currently planned. For now, I gotta finish the 1995 episode, and that's my main focus. :)

      I'm thinking MS DOS, C64 and maybe Sega Genesis/Megadrive for the similar series. After few weeks with more standard regular videos as I've got some things to sort out in real life and those videos take most of my time after day job and there are days when I'm up working on them to 1:30-2am. xD But since, no one seemed to done anything similar, other systems are not out of the question and I'm really curious what I'll learn about them as it's been a while since I played them and reminiscing and replaying them may be pretty fun.

And if you manage to get a CompactFlash card mounted as HD and run WHDLoad from Workbench on it, it will be like having a real-life Amiga console that's not emulation based. Or you can just stick to how we played it back then, juggling those disks like crazy. That's an expensive way of using it though as there's less and less of faultless disks and drives on the market and it's unlikely to change in the future.

      Btw. before the next episode of "10 Years of PC DOS Gaming" there will be an Amiga video releasing. I'm hoping for it to be no longer than 30 minutes, so that I could focus on the gaming history monstrosity that will have a lot of awesome titles for 1995 and would take over 2 weeks to make. So, dropping something smaller that takes considerably less time in-between is a good choice I think. Especially that I think I've a good idea for that one.

      I've made some top10's in the past but after working on the series I gotta say that at least 2-3 games per each top10 would've have to be replaced now. I just didn't remember as many titles as I got to re-play for this and skipped some of the big ones. Top100 is not out of question would be extremely difficult. I mean Lemon Amiga's Top 100 would be an easy video but mine wouldn't. I would struggle with placement of so many games quite a bit 100 best (and not in particular order) would be much easier for me to prepare as I would just have to on 100 that I consider best and not where they are in relation to each other. And that actually is something that I could do but... If 60-ish games lists take over an hour, then best 100 list would be extremely long. Don't know if that's an issue but I feel people gravitate towards shorter videos more. Am I wrong?

    Beneath a Steel sky is one of my all time favourite games but to be honest I played it on PC with the full voice acting & on CD instead of 15 floppies.
    Benefactor is excellent but as you said not well known, same with Little Divil & Universe.
    Bubba’n’Stix absolutely is beautiful. It deserves to be better remembered than it is.
    Cannon Fodder I & II were so good it’s worth getting them running on modern hardware through Open Fodder. Well worth it to me anyway.
    I’m also grateful there were no Matrix sequels…
    Dreamweb is extraordinary & a game that helped to show games could be for adults.
    Innocent Until Court is a recommendation I’ve never played as are Captive 2 & Sierra Soccer which I never played because Sensible Soccer existed.
    The whole Kings Quest series is amazing & VI is one of the greatest.
    The Mortal Kombat ports showed that the Amiga absolutely could do fighters justice but yeh, the MK2 single player sucks for the reasons stated.
    Sid Mayer’s Pirates absolutely rocks but Gold is not the best version version.
    I’m not big on management sims but Theme Park is compelling to me?
    I’ll accept “Potatoest” as a real word. 😄
    Of the 2 I’m tempted to say 1993 was the best year for the Amiga but lets face it 1994 gave us some amazing games.

    • @OldAndNewVideoGames
      @OldAndNewVideoGames  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a crime that Benefactor's such a unknown title. It's really good if given the time and if good joystick is involved as it's a nightmare played with a crappy one. Cannon Fodder is something that was not done before and I'm sure it's been done in such an easy and approachable way after either.
      I always thought that I sucked at MK2. Sure there were some tricks and move sequences you could do to progress farther than when not using them but completing the game straight up was so difficult because of the cheating. Even on the lowest levels.
      That's what I'm thinking too - 1993 is still the best, but 1994 was crucial. Some of the real gems showed up and were what kept us playing Amiga that year/two longer. 1995, that I'm working on, no to spoil too much, will have much less games sadly. :/

      While swapping floppies was annoying, playing it on A500 required serious patience as it was really slow. Fortunately, it's one of those games that doesn't have to be fast. That said, it would've hugely benefited from more speed.

    Arrrdventure! :D That was funny.
    Poor Amiga was on the first steps on its decline it seems. This is the first time I hear of the console, CD32. Interesting. It sounds like a good idea, since they already had good hardware for games.
    From what you've said about the ranges of colours, it almost sounds like they can be programmatically generated? So you start with a palette, but you can write some code to modify it in certain circumstances and get more colours?
    Litil Divil is so devilishly cute! :D I immediately imagined that the character is one of the demons in Dungeon Keeper, going about his business, navigating through hell, which is full of deadly traps, as all good hells should be. :)

    • @OldAndNewVideoGames
      @OldAndNewVideoGames  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      CD32 was such a flop and for sooooo many reasons. For one, its hardware was antiquated by day one. For two, the banked on it saving the company, which is a mistake if you're not using up to date or decent components. For three, it hardly had any exclusives, and most games were ports from A1200. And for fourth, and last, something happened with the licensing and they couldn't sell it in the US, making it basically DOA. It's sad, but CD32 was not a way for Amiga to survive. A newer, better and faster Amiga was. Especially that its OS was years ahead of Windows then still.
      Well, Amiga's colours are a bag and a half. There's the basic 16, for porting from Atari ST, as that came earlier and some of first Amiga games were ports. Then basic 32, which is exactly how it sounds, so 32 out of a palette of 4096. 64 where available in the EHB mode, so Extra Half Bright, which was basically the 32 and half brightness shades of each. 4096 was accessible through HAM mode, so Hold And Modify, but it was hardly used in games for anything else than title screens or pictures, as it didn't play well with "moving" graphics and hardly any dev knew how to use it well. Now... 256 colours mode on basic OCS/ECS chipsets didn't exist officially. It didn't stop crafty folks, often from the demo scene, or in literally a handful of games to prove it possible. How they've done it - I've no clue, but it was impressive. :)

    • @TeaAndFloppyDisks
      @TeaAndFloppyDisks 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@OldAndNewVideoGames Ouch! Then the idea for a console was just good as an idea, not in its implementation. And definitely, you're right, they should have kept making the computer as well. But it sounds like the cash had run out...
      I know you've explained the different graphics and colour options before, so thank you for taking the time to do it again! I've retained a bit more. And I'll definitely look into how 256 colours were achieved. It's a mystery that needs closer inspection. :)

    • @OldAndNewVideoGames
      @OldAndNewVideoGames  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@TeaAndFloppyDisks There's another mystery to inspect here... How could Amiga back then emulate PC DOS and MacOS in real time, while neither of the two could emulate Amiga? Big part of it is a disk drive, cause while Amiga drive could read all disks (sometimes just like that, sometimes with drivers), no other system could read Amiga disks.

    • @TeaAndFloppyDisks
      @TeaAndFloppyDisks 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@OldAndNewVideoGames Really? Wow, I had no idea that could happen. It sounds like they programmed the formats of those other computers in, for compatibility, but did a little extra for the Amiga itself, that the other computers didn't have a way to read.

    12:05 Really, Cannon Fodder 2 was a failure. All they had to do was NOT to mess up the formula, but difficulty, themes, sounds, even the visuals all took a small hit and resulted in a huge disappointment. Most people probably say "It wasn't bad at all! I got it and enjoyed it". In truth, playing the first five levels or so. It just didn't come together at all. 😑Very sad.
    EDIT: 59:26 No way. Maybe it's praised for graphics, complely overshadowed by lack of logic and miserable interface. It was critically very much panned by most reviews and any praising reviews I'd say were highly 'sus'. Only thing you have to do, is to play it even half way without cheats and anyone should see the game for the trash it, unfortunately. It's a real shame, both Enchantia and Universe seem so charming but are unplayably bad.

      Fair points. But following first title was never going to be an easy task. Sure, they could've done nothing and just leave it as it was and most would be happy. But I bet there would be some voices saying that it was the same game and nothing more so it wasn't very good. They risked... And they mis-calculated. Which ended also in some harsh criticism but in the end if the first never existed and there was nothing to compare this one to, it would've been a pretty decent game.

    Maybe the scrolling in Ruff 'n' Tumble feels off because it's a game that runs at half refresh rate? I bet it was needed as the visuals is pushing the Amiga's limits, but in a 2D action game, be that 25fps for PAL or 30fps for NTSC, it just doesn't feel right at all, these games are compromised as they need snappy controls and quick reflexes, imagine Contra, Super Mario World or Sonic 2 running at 30fps.
    Streets of Rage 1 on the Mega Drive/Genesis runs at 30, which is a strange choice, but it doesn't compromise that kind of gameplay.
    PS: From the Sierra Soccer segment, I get you're Polish, I should have guessed from the accent, it's great to have a different approach to retro gaming, I'm sure you can tell the world a lot from your perspective, which is different from most of the bigger channels.

    I used to use a master system pad on my grandads Amiga... I always wondered why so few games even used 2 buttons since the Amiga supported it :( it's almost like they didn't want to annoy the hardcore classic 1 button users, who still seem to moan that modern Amiga releases use 2 buttons:( street fighter if made like mortal Kombat on the Amiga could easily be playable to a decent level with 2 buttons for punch and kick like the game boy version which is still quite playable despite its low specs

      Perhaps it was the case of smallest common denominator? Most Amiga users had joysticks with one button controls, even if physically there were more buttons on them. So, it was more profitable (and easier) to please the grand majority rather than cater to a minority... I think.

    I remember reading that Sim City 2000 was not ported well to the Amiga, so it certainly could have been better. With the proliferation of ever cheaper PCs and the resultant massive market for PC games, developers didn't feel inclined to work hard to port to a system where specs were typically lower and, moreover, piracy was rife (I recently heard that Worms, one of the finest games and biggest sellers of the era across all platforms, sold a pitiful 5,000 copies on the Amiga. There weren't THAT few people playing it on Amigas by then, I am sure). Apparently the proof of this can be seen in the smoother running Mac version; a Mac can be emulated on the Amiga, and you can run the Mac version of Sim City just fine- so emulating another computer and playing that version of the game is faster than playing the version published for the Amiga! In my opinion it was playable, though my tolerance for slowness was much higher in those days. Our A1200 had either 2mb or 4mb of Fast RAM, I forget which, but then I never played the PC or Mac version back then to feel the pain of it; I played it a lot and was very happy with it. 1994 brought the awful shock of Commodore going under, though nevertheless we still got decent versions of some fine games like Theme Park and Universe, and the brilliant UFO which I fell in love with. I can't remember if I had read about it in a magazine beforehand or simply saw it in the shop, but I remember buying it in Ipswich (a large town in southern England which we visited while staying with relatives) and being in awe of the smart graphics on the back of the box. I gazed at the artwork on the front of the box and the screenshots of wheatfields in the game while we drove home past the wheat fields of East Anglia, and reading the manual greedily. The game didn't disappoint when I got to play it. Roadkill was a great game as well, absolutely one of the best games in these dying days of the Amiga, at least an 80% game for me. The corners, as you say, were a bit disappointing and lack of multiplayer in this type of game seems a strange oversight, but the graphics and gameplay were very good, and complemented with one of the Amiga's consistent strengths- satisfying sound effects and superb music. Guardian is another game that I had and liked a lot (A1200 version might have come out in '95, I think), it certainly ran smoothly on our A1200 and I don't think Starfox entered my head when I played it- I had played demos with similar primitive 3D graphics on the Amiga and this type of vector graphics had always appealed to me, and still does. Aladdin was one of the few movie tie-ins that was a great game, and the Amiga had a top notch port of it, which was very pleasing. I think we managed, my brother and I, to complete it (we didn't complete many games). I think we only had a demo of Bubba and Stix, but I remember it was noted on all platforms for its impressive graphics and it was pleasing, as with Aladdin, that the Amiga got a good port of this game. Benefactor and Fury of the Furries were games that I didn't feel inclined to play back then, but puzzlers are more my thing now than they used to be, and I am tempted to give them a go (FoF certainly looks better in motion than I imagined from magazine screenshots). The Clue and Dreamweb were two unique and intriguing games which I liked the look of but never played. I played the world cup edition of On the Ball and, while it wasn't one of my favourite games, was a refreshingly different addition to the genre. Sierra Soccer I enjoyed on a coverdisk but I was too big a SWOS fan to bother buying it. My brother and I didn't get Lords of the Realm but it was one he lusted after for a few years (he was a strategy lover and bought such classics on the Amiga as The Settlers, Civ, Colonization, Historyline and some Napoleonic War simulations by Peter Turcan). We later bought LotR III on PC, only to be terribly disappointed by this poor sequel.

      I was 14-ish when UFO came out and I had a friend who was 30. Yeah, it sounds creepy now but it was all good back then and I'm happy to report that he was just a good dude and not a creep at all. He had a family and everything already when I was just a teen lad. So it was purely a gaming friendship. And he showed me UFO, and introduced me to some of the more interesting strategies like Civilization and RPG games on the Amiga. We ended up not only playing many of them together or against each other but even exchanging strategies, tips and tricks. So, in a way, I owe this friend my gaming preferences.
      If you consider playing Fury of the Furries just go for it. It's sooooo good. Especially when you start finding those hidden level and there is at least one in nearly every single level. I am considering doing a livestream of it at some point if I ever get a camera. It's an amazing title to play but also fun to watch if someone who's playing it not only does it well but also knows of all hidden areas. As on first glance they're invisible but in time, as you play, you just can't stop yourself looking for them.

      @@OldAndNewVideoGames That's great, I expect a lot of kids in your position, without such a friend (and I think older people are more inclined to find strategy games appealing) you might not have realised you'd enjoyed that sort of game. Not to mention having two player games with! I used to play my brother in two players on the Amiga, but one or the other would often rage quit, lol. Maybe playing with someone older and more mature is better for two players, less anger perhaps and more willing to accept defeat (it was especially bad on football games, which I was a huge fan of, as I was much better than my brother :))! As a teenager I also had some friends who were young adult men, though that was through a school mate- his older sister was going out with one of these blokes, and so we ended up playing footy with them on a regular basis. A good bunch :)

    Some superb games in 1994, just not quite enough of them. 1995 will be significantly weaker as developers flee the system.

      I've got a list and previews already written for 1995. I will begin working on it seriously from tomorrow as today I'm taking a day off. And while there are some really good games, there's no way 1995 could compare to previous years in either amount or quality of titles. There were few cool ones released in 1996 and later, for instance my number one beat'em up which happens to be obscure Polish game - Doman - that you don't need to know the language to play as it's virtually nowhere in it - but 1996+ will have a single additional video released bit later as a supplement to the series. All years combined so it can be bit longer than 15 minutes. ;)

    Several games that ran at 50Hz (or 60 in NTSC) are only displayed here at 25/30 ... like Kid Chaos, Road Kill, Super Stardust etc. That makes them look a lot worse than they actually are. Considering you took clips of existing videos, you could have at least spent more time finding the ones running at the proper framerate.

    Matrix sequel movies are certainly not for everyone. The sequels are very clever movies for clever people, certainly not mass market material. That is why they are so reviled usually. I, for one, love them very much, they are of the few examples of art being both extremely intelligent and, at the same time, touching and emotional. I did not know it was possible for an artwork to be both until I appreciated Matrix sequels. If you did not "get" them, you are excused for not liking them, they are not for everyone. Yes, I bit the bait. So what =D

      @@OldAndNewVideoGames By the way, great video! How many great games Amiga did have, it turns out! The Clue seems especially interesting one - planning and doing a heist, that's what usually a plot-driven RPG or Quest has, but then, in such a game it is a scripted event instead of there being a mechanic to do such stuff over and over again!

    SimCity 2000 was 100% a bad port. If you emulated a mac system on your a1200, it would run much better than the original amiga version on same spec of hardware.

    • @OldAndNewVideoGames
      @OldAndNewVideoGames  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And that was also emulated, I know. Someone dropped the ball on it and the people bringing it to the Amiga were just not caring enough to fix it. It was the last few years of the OG Amiga though, so people stopped caring and only focused on PC and other more popular platforms.

    SWOS was made by Renegade? Really?
    Also I guess you never played Ruff'N'Tumble back in the day.

    • @OldAndNewVideoGames

      SWOS was published by Renegade. As you've noticed most likely already, on those game cards there's always a publisher not the developer. Because some old games can still be purchased and it in some way may be helpful in tracking them down. SWOS was obviously made by Sensible Software.
