    To generally explain a dragon break.
    Imagine light through a prism. The prism represents the start. The refracted rainbow represents the timelines.
    Now imagine the entire rainbow of light hitting another prism, and becoming normal light again.
    This is a dragon break. Time shatters into multiple paths. But they eventually reconverge, and all aspects and events within every path are true and false.
    But from an outside perspective you see everything as it happens.

    • @technodroid9411
      @technodroid9411 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Hey, I know this is late but how is it possible though? Isn't there a contradiction? Say there was a dragon break when Alduin returned, so there would be a timeline where the Dragonborn fail to stop Alduin and one where he succeeded. If the timelines reconverge how can the Dragonborn have failed and succeeded at the same time?

    • @fireblast133
      @fireblast133 2 ปีที่แล้ว +94

      @@technodroid9411 no, not quite. See, Alduin's defeat did not come at the point of a dragon break, it's the tunnel punched through time he was banished through.
      And literally everything about a Dragon Break is a contradiction. The end of it has every timeline within true and false at the same time.

      @@fireblast133 So every possibility merged into one. But there are no consequences though? Shouldn't an event like this collapse the world or something? Kinda like an error in the matrix type of stuff. How did Nirn survive something like this?

    • @fireblast133
      @fireblast133 2 ปีที่แล้ว +101

      @@technodroid9411 One of the things to bear in mind is that Nirn is not 'earth with magic'. It's a plane within oblivion that many ancient spirits poured their power into at Lorkhan's urging. It is, in essense, a plane of oblivion just like a daedric prince's realm is, and Lorkhan was to be it's Daedric Prince, but between his betrayal being discovered and the other spirits not putting everything into Nirn, it became different.
      And everything in the Elder Scrolls universe? It is all the manifestation of a dreamer. It's all, technically, one big dream. And dreams do not follow logic as we know it.

    My dream future elder scrolls game is one which does a bait and switch halfway through the main questline where the dwemer return and they become the new antagonists because they've been trapped in some other plain of existence and they've made it their mission to return to tamriel and conquer it. It would be cooler if its kept a secret in the marketing of the game and its a suprise for the player unless they've seen some leaks.

My college buddy lent me his copy and right there on the box was written "Welcome to your new obsession". It was the first PC game I'd ever played and, having nothing but console JRPGs under my belt, my sense of awe and wonder was palpable. I could do practically ANYTHING in this world. It was such an enormous sandbox that I have yet to finish the main story line. Someday, King Lysandus,...someday I will finally free your tormented soul and close the marble jaws of Oblivion.

    Fun fact: when he was talking about books being censored, he is most likely talking about “The Real Barenziah” which is a biography about one of the most famous Dunmer Queens who came to power just as the Septim Dynasty was founded. The censored portion was actually censored not “by the church” in game but by people rating the game as the particular potion that got censored was a very graphic sex scene between Barenziah and Talos. They just used the church excuse I imagine as a way to explain the blip in the story and also possibly as a jab at the people who made them censor it in the first place.

    Big compliment on your ability to summarize and make references. I have watched many many hours of TES lore videos, but I was always lacking sources that summarize a bit. You do that very well (aedra vs. dadrea vs. magna ge for example). It's important for learning things to have summaries that help you compress knowledge into concepts. So, thank you for not just rambling on and stuffing information down our content hungry brains but actually taking the time to structure it in a way that makes it easy to follow.

    Also I totally agree about the lore’s complexity being part of what makes it so interesting. I LOVE how each in-game source has to be read within its context, and a lot of it is propaganda that you have to study to see the underlying biases. It’s got so many layers that give it way more substance than a typical game/series.

This video is what I'll recommend to my friends or anyone else who are also interested in learning the history. This video is so good, really well done and great in the way it highlights the main stepping stones of the history while also stressing that it's just a generalized rundown and there's a lot more details to learn. Honestly it's always worth keeping in mind a general overview of lore for any series, especially any series with a great deal of both depth and uncertainty to said lore. I think most of us who have knowledge of the lore, to one degree or another, have our general interpretations of what we consider likely but it's worth remembering that, even if our preferred interpretation is strong, nothing is really set in stone until it is canon.
