It is so cool to see and hear Ivey open up. He had this mystery around him. Still has some of it. He almost had a cult of personality, let me say in 2008.
He is so smart. I want to get better at not being on social media as much. It's definitely a weakness/addiction I have. He is right. Shorts are scary how you just get caught up seeing one after the other, and it's a lil sickening the dopamine hits we are getting so fast it's ruining our brains :/
My favorite part of this video is how they Phil’s idea of wasting time on TH-cam is “20 minutes have gone by.” Sir, this is a TH-cam video I’m watching in my current 3 hour binge.
I once heard Ivey say "I've never had a poker session where I didn't make a mistake." That says a lot coming from the goat compared to other hot shots who pride themselves on "perfect decisions". It also explains how Ivey got to be the goat. Endless learning curve. I also remember Ivey telling how to get good at poker. "Play a lot. Learn from your mistakes. Lose money." LOL.
2:30 i think even now...with all the books n computer stuff...there's still some players that rather learn on their own by just being at the table...bccause no one relaly wants to stare at a computer screen of charts or read books...the best teacher is being at the table gridning and gambling , winning and lossing...that's the best teaching you can get.
Phil's capacity for being self-aware and self-critical should be a model for anyone. He's doing wonderfully well, but is also aware of his shortcomings. This is something Hellmuth should consider. He makes noises about being aware of his shortcomings, but usually only as a way to segue (usually abruptly) back into how wonderful he is. The most amazing thing I've ever seen Ivey do was in a cash game in (I believe) Monte Carlo, where he and the opponent (don't remember his name) made multiple bets pre-flop, neither holding better than (if I remember correctly) 7-high. Ivey ultimately went all-in and his opponent folded. I know there's a video of this hand so it would be great if you could dig it out and play it.
When Phil said..."Im gonna do whatever it takes to beat U outta your money...", & that He wanted Every Chip From Every Player, THATS HOW I WAS BROUGHT UP TO PLAY, SO I'm happy to hear it, cuz He's 1 of the Best To Ever Do It!!! He's the 🛥Boat🛥!!!
As I watch this a touch of sadness does come over me since there is no bigger fan of Phil Ivey like myself. And its just wild how much poker I watched back in the day with my 2 young daughters who were TODDLERS at the time & fast forward to today, and they both are in University, Also the Phil Ivey Poker commercial where he comes back home early to find his Wife cheating will forever leave a lasting memory of a fun and simpler time.
The best Ivey commercial is the one where the guy throws his chips and while they're in the air they let you hear him thinking to himself. "Is he bluffing? I think he's trying to bluff me here."
I think many players feel like this and make the same mistake, myself included. Also, to be fair, Doyle shared plenty of strategy relatively early in his career when he wrote the NLH section of Super System.
It remind me of someting mysterious. Like a TV series about a secret and the show keep coming everyweek and we wait for the mystere to be told. If they would keep going without telling what is the plot it could go like that for ever. We would keep watching hoping to understand till the end of the world. Ivey is kind of like that introvert who probably wants to talk to people but doesn't. And as an introvert myself, our friends are always that one super extroverted guy who for whatever reasons develops an attachment to you. Which in Ivey's case is Daniel Negreanu. Lol. Ivey laughing about kids today not asking about hands is funny, probably cause they just stare at their computer screens all day looking at the numbers so they think they know it all already. Ivey and Negreanu are the great mix of old school and new school.
