I’ve been doing some thinking recently about this channel and a thought popped into my mind overnight. It’s been a really interesting journey sharing my love of the piano with everyone all over the world. It still trips me out that I spend an afternoon recording a track (it has to be the afternoon for those curious about the process, as the piano is lit by natural light - it’s best between 1pm - 4pm in the room that I’m recording in), sitting by myself in front of a piano in my music school, and that people from all over the world get to experience a very private moment of my creative process. What I find particularly interesting though is when I listen back to these interpretations, there’s a pretty strong disconnect between playing/recording the tracks and hearing them back. Without a drop of ego, I personally enjoy listening to these tracks either late at night to help me fall asleep, occasionally in the morning when I wake up to find some more motivation about working on my Radiohead songbook, but my favourite time would definitely be when I’m travelling, especially in airports or on planes, and also on public transport. As there are a lot of returning subscribers and listeners on this channel, my question to you is this: Where and when do you listen to these tracks? What are you doing? Working? Studying? Travelling? Eating breakfast? Passing out? What time of day is it? What do you see? How does it make you feel? I’d be very curious to hear your thoughts, so hit me up. As always, thanks for supporting the channel and for incorporating this music into your lives. Man, the internet blows my mind sometimes x
Josh Cohen right now I'm listening to it while trying to fall asleep, I also watched this video a lot to learn how the song is played, which was mostly in the afternoon or night, I would also enjoy it on a walk or on the bus I think, thanks for uploading :)
Hey, i'm live in Salvador, Ba, Brazil, and i listen your work for HOURS and HOURS while i'm studying or working in some project. it helps me keep concentration and focus, sometimes i just fall asleep while listening, i like how you keep you videos in B&W, on the same angle, same piano and even same clothes, it keeps attention where needs, the music, BTW thank you! you're such inspiration! P.s: the zero7 music was a surprise, a good one.
So I’m in piano class at school and I’m supposed to be learning “Brother John”. But I said screw that I’m gonna learn “Aisatsana” and this video has helped me a lot with it. I’ve only been playing for a month. I get so emotional when I ever play this song, it’s filled with such emotion and passion. I love Richard man.
something i love about this song, is how it doesnt seem like its been overly thought out. the notes you hear being played, just fit right in because they just happen. no overthinking. theres only what can depict a feeling the best way, and it gets me every time. i find myself dissociating and i just let myself sit and allow my thoughts to wander freely.
I initially sampled some birds here in Melbourne to put over the track. I deliberated about including them and opted to keep it clean. Could have gone either way! 😄
You really covered the feel and emotion of the spaces in this man, simple song but hard to pull off correctly with the same depth as our lord and savior Aphex Twin delivered to us. Well done man.
Found it it's dedicated to his wife, makes it even more heartwarming. xltronic.com/media/images/attachments/3895_1970318.jpg I wonder how many more songs are actually dedicated to people? He must have one for his brother???
Yes and no. I've had lessons on and off since I started with about six to seven different teachers over twenty-five years. I haven't had a lesson in many years and would love to get back into them at some point. My teachers were all classical or jazz.
DUDE! You are so awesome. Thank you so much for listening to your fan's requests! Definitely sharing your videos with others to grow your channel. You deserve it, man.
Stumbled upon a very beautiful review of this cover from Marc Weidenbaum at disquiet.com. Check it out here: disquiet.com/2017/01/14/josh-cohen-aphex-twin-aisatasana-piano/
I don't usually like covers. But this, this is something else. You can really 'hear' the interpretation taking place, the personification of the piece, especially where the pauses are concerned. Thank you for this lovely translation. 🌷

i'm just looking through the sidebar, and i already see more and more songs and artists that i love that were covered by you. this is beautiful, keep up the astounding work.

Hi Justin, thanks for sharing your world with me. I'm obviously not qualified or trained to help you or give you professional advice, but I'd recommend speaking to someone at bit.ly/2tLG7Ql. All the best, Josh ✌️
I needed a break from playing and learning guitar and this song seems to help me calm down and refocus :) Thanks for uploading and greetings from Brisbane
So Beautiful! It's so clear that you have passion for what you do, and this just makes everything worth it! Thank you! Got goosebumps counting along with you.
Hi Noah, ALP and Ryan. I have been working on Avril 14th this week. Would you prefer a version identical to the original or with some slight variations?
This is absolutely gorgeous, and very profound, my type of music! How goes the process for getting the rights to release sheet music? Would love to get my hands on it soon and dive in. As always, thanks for blessing us with this beautiful rendition, and I look forward to hearing more from you :)
Hi Artur, I still haven't heard anything about the rights to release the Radiohead sheet music as yet. They say the process can take up to twelve weeks - I applied on December 1, 2016. If you'd like the sheet music for aisatsana though, I'm sure you can find it online. Good luck!
I love this song. Just discovered it today. Mesmerizing! Absolutely beautifully played. But I feel like this is half of the song. As if more should be written. And I don't mean add more notes to just add more. I mean I feel like some parts wanted to go somewhere but instead it repeated itself before it explored. Idk, my 2 cents. In time I'll buy a piano and see if I can continue the story this song has created for me.
You know what, I take what I said back. This song reminded me of Yann Tierson- Comptine d'un autre ete. Their both different pieces. But somehone my brain connected the two. I will definitely learn to play this. Love this song, love this performance, cheers
My first thought on reading your comments are perhaps it would be an interesting exercise to write a companion piece, one that incorporates the same motif, but is structured in a way that is the mirror or inverse of this piece, that "fills in the blanks," as it were, yet stands alone.
I always struggle with the timing in this song. If I'm not really focused and relaxed it feels all over the place. I know you probably get a ton of requests for songs, but I would love to see your take on a Godspeed you! Black Emperor song. Something lengthy like your paranoid android cover. I know you haven't put out a video in a while, hope all is okay!
Fantastic video as usual, Josh. Since we seem to have a similar music taste (Radiohead, Aphex Twin, Father John Misty), I don't suppose you like The Antlers as well? There are hardly any piano covers of any of their stuff on the internet.
Most people would likely agree on Hospice being their best album, but it's a very sad concept album. Their two albums after that, Burst Apart and Familiars, both have solid tracks throughout without being as painful to listen to.
Beatiful piece, beautiful perfomance! Also like tne moving strings sound... It adds something that I can't explain, but it feels wondeful. By the way, am I right that this piece is written in C major? Or it is A minor? Because it sounds very melancholic, which is a bit unusial for major keys (judging based on my small experience).
The original song isn't too difficult and your changes are consistently improvements, so with that in mind I wouldn't be bothered by any variations as long as they're not blatantly against the spirit of the original. Thanks for taking my suggestion into consideration!
I'm really happy with this piano and it sounds great. The Steinways here in Aus are super expensive and very overpriced. Glad you're enjoying the clips. Just working on another Aphex track today. The arrangement's almost done :-)
Hi Josh, thanks a lot for this. Overall I really like this version, though with one exception. I feel the final chord you play misses some of the magic of the original. You add a G3 (played by RH thumb) which is not there in the original, and the original transitions into the final chord almost en passant (making the bass C unexpected and therefore impactful), whereas you let the penultimate note linger for longer and introduce something of a rest. To be honest I think those two changes take away some of the character of the song, the ethereal nature (present everywhere else) gets lost by adding the G3 and pause. Take this just FWIW, perhaps it's helpful for you or anyone else; like I said I appreciate your work anyway :)
How difficult was it to remember the placement of each phrase? I've been considering learning this but I feel as if it would take a very long time to get it all in the right order.
Its not that hard. You’re forced to develop the internal metronome from reading sheet music. Just listening to the song for a couple dozen times should be enough.
Josh Cohen nice!!! You are the best, I've enjoyed your covers so much especially as you're able to see what you're playing, it makes it a lot easier to follow :)
