It’s been 13 years since I first saw this video, I lost my dad, my partner and two dogs. I emigrated to another country, 3 beautiful nieces have been born and I am still figuring out who I am but every time I come back to this video I feel at home.

Funny how minimalistic notes and a video with little to no embellishment can merge together into something stellar. It's a cheesy thing to say but Richard James really is the most underrated musician of our time.
overrated* its a bit naive to think that all his fame comes from his music work alone. in my opinion villalobos and loderbauer are underrated, even james holden is.. both re:ecm and the inheritors are much more solid works and inovative in composition and production techniques than any aphex twin album..
He's one of the greatest composers of this century and will be studied and remembered as such. I've never heard a musician so in touch with the human experience.
First saw this video in 2007 when i was 17 and going through the usual shit you do at that age, it struck a chord with me then and now 9 years later i still watch it. Simplicity at its best, 2 friends having a couple of beers, the journey of these guys isnt important for this video, purely the moment and we have been lucky enough to be a part of it! Peace

I still watch this video every now and again. I remember watching it when I was 17, 13 years ago, depressed over a failing relationship. This video was one of many things that helped me overcome it.
I've loved this video since I was 17 years old. I'm 30 now. I was a completely different person in a completely different world then, but when I watch this video, I return to that place, and it makes me feel melancholy. Even now, scrolling through the comments, I stumbled across a comment I left on here 12 years ago--like a glance at some looking glass. I took a lot for granted. Just know that this video means a lot to me and that it brings me to a more comfortable and familiar place where the world still seemed so big and there was still so much time left. I miss that summer all those years ago and the people I knew then. I hope this never gets taken down.
It's currently February 14, 2021. This video turns 14 years old in two months. I'd have to imagine that the guys in this video are now in their 30s, probably standing well on cusp of becoming 40. There is something very captivating about this video that I and so many others keep coming back to. Maybe it's because, this video is the closest thing to a modern snapshot of the past, like how your parents would dig into their old photo albums from the 70s and 80s. Something tells me that even in the next decade when I'm well into my 30's, I still be coming back to this video just to admire it again.

It made me smile because I empathised, and more so now, as once again I find myself looking for APHEX TWIN RHUBARB ROOFTOP. This video brought back memories that I can’t seem to shake. I’m 36 now, but at 19, I had a very close friendship. We shared everything - our teenage struggles, our first awkward steps into relationships, late-night talks about life, sneaking out to sit on a bench downtown with a few beers, and just being carefree in a way that only those years allow. It was a time when life felt open and endless. But when I started university, I let it all slip through my fingers. I was distant, emotionally closed off, weighed down by a depression I didn’t even recognize back then. He tried to keep the connection alive, reaching out again and again, but I was too caught up in myself to notice the damage I was doing. I didn’t understand what I was throwing away. I was arrogant, careless with time, and wasteful with friendships and people in general. Now, years later, I find myself haunted by those memories. Not just because of the guilt, though that’s a part of it, but because it was a time when I felt a kind of joy and freedom I haven’t felt since. Despite my naturally melancholic nature, those moments were light, full of laughter and ease, even when life was messy. I dream of those days often, almost as if my mind is trying to hold onto a piece of the person I was back then - someone who, despite the sadness, could live fully in the moment. Writing this, I realize I’m still trying to make sense of it all. I wonder if I truly understand the weight of what I lost or if I’m still fumbling in the same patterns, making the same mistakes in smaller ways. Maybe I am. Maybe I always will be. But this video reminded me of how fragile those connections are and how easy it is to let them slip away when we’re too young or too foolish to understand their worth.
I dunno if you will see this, but I have seriously been returning to this video once every couple of years for the last ten years now. It somehow captures a universal nostalgia despite the fact that this is not my own lived experience. It is a perfect video, and I don’t mean that hyperbolically. It is a legitimate TH-cam gem.
I'm so happy i've seen this comment yams02. I've also been coming back to this video on and off for many years, especially in times of desperation or need. Lots of music and art is appealing to me, or just fine, or not that good - I'm not a connoiseur of any kind. I don't really know anything about art. I often wonder where these guys are now. I’m sure they have families of their own. Are they still friends? For all we know, this could have been the last time they spent a day together. This music and video never gets old. I appreciate the authentic and simple video footage that accompanies the music. I know that this is a video of two twin brothers, but I always felt like the video depicted two high-school best friends that are hanging out one last time, right before their high-school graduation ceremony, in their suits... They know in that moment, that life is great, but that their lives will also probably be changing very much after that day. That they may not see each other very much again, from that day on, and that they will begin having many more responsibilities, etc. And therefore, there is a sadness about that day, as well. Which is so true about life... Life can be great during our youth, but at the same time, life is usually extremely sad as we grow older. Life contains many beginnings, and many endings. And the sadness is usually stronger for many people, than the happiness. The happiness of our lives, is usually at its peak, when we are preparing to graduate from high-school, and it declines after that. And this music and video footage really seems to capture that feeling. Aphex Twin said that the music for this song came to him in a dream. That doesn't surprise me, and it makes perfect sense. This very simple melody probably did in fact come from "the other side." It is such a moving piece of music, and really shows the power that music and love has. Thank you, James, for this acoustic version of Rhubarb, and for this video. I hope that this video never leaves TH-cam. This is probably one of my all time favorite pieces of music and videos. every now & again I come back this this video, years at a time. the first time I was watching it I was much younger than these men now I've become older.
If a picture says a thousand words, then this video says a lifetime. We can all readily imagine a vague outline of the lives that these men may have lived prior to what we see in the footage, and after what we see in the footage. Two friends, hanging out and enjoying each other's company, right at what looks to be on the cusp of major change in their lives. Maybe they just graduated school or college, and intended to move away from home. Maybe they were celebrating finding new jobs. Who knows. Life at that time seems so exciting and thrilling, and you feel like there's nothing you can't do or don't know. We all know that feeling, and consequently we all see ourselves in that video. The two friends are young, and so full of life and potential. There is an irreducible beauty and power in that. The music is at once melancholic and comforting - melancholic because we know what the loss of innocence feels like, but comforting because we also learn to value the stability and routine that becoming older affords us. It's crushing to discover that the world might not be as shiny and sparkly and exciting as your younger mind may have imagined, but, with some thoughtful introspection, an older mind can often see unlimited beauty in the quotidian. Sometimes, all the adventure you need is to see your partner smile, or hear your child laugh. At the end of all things, that is what life is about. I adore that this video can convey all that.

Pretty sure I found this 14-15 years ago near its upload time, and I always associated this with my close friend because that’s the kinda hangout shit we’d do (without the drinks cuz kids). He died a couple of years back and it’s very much amplified the melancholic state. I’m back today as we lay another friend to rest because this suits the feeling so well.

The year this video was published I became best friends with this other kid. We spent all our teenage and young adult years together. We were inseparable. We learned to play guitar together and we did that a lot. We wrote a lot of music with the intent of playing with one another. We also had the habit of climbing to this particular rooftop and have a few beers there. Once we used a rope to pull a table and a couple of chairs up to the roof and we called that our own rooftop bar, to which we'd come back often. One night we went were hanging out like so many other times and in the end of the night there was one beer left. We agreed to get together the next night to drink that beer together. I ended up forgetting that, he called me and I didn't pick up. That night his heart stopped and he died. I still miss him so much and I wish we could have that beer together and I always will. I will never have a friend like him again.

Every year or two, I find myself back at this video. I don't know what it is that draws me to it. There's something so comforting and yet so sad about it, I just can't put my finger on it. Those days will come to an end soon, and the sunset in the background seems analogous to this, a sense of foreboding regarding the fleeting period of youth, all underscored by the fact that this video was uploaded a decade ago and, in all probability, its end has come to fruition.
It captures the melancholic feeling of lost years wonderfully. You can never go back.

Funny how minimalistic notes and a video with little to no embellishment can merge together into something stellar. It's a cheesy thing to say but Richard James really is the most underrated musician of our time.

I've loved this video since I was 17 years old. I'm 30 now. I was a completely different person in a completely different world then, but when I watch this video, I return to that place, and it makes me feel melancholy. Even now, scrolling through the comments, I stumbled across a comment I left on here 12 years ago--like a glance at some looking glass. I took a lot for granted. Just know that this video means a lot to me and that it brings me to a more comfortable and familiar place where the world still seemed so big and there was still so much time left. I miss that summer all those years ago and the people I knew then. I hope this never gets taken down.

This video turns 14 years old in two months. I'd have to imagine that the guys in this video are now in their 30s, probably standing well on cusp of becoming 40.
There is something very captivating about this video that I and so many others keep coming back to. Maybe it's because, this video is the closest thing to a modern snapshot of the past, like how your parents would dig into their old photo albums from the 70s and 80s.
Something tells me that even in the next decade when I'm well into my 30's, I still be coming back to this video just to admire it again.

In 2007, 1994 seemed like it was a lifetime ago. Today, 2007 still feels like it was barely last year.
I remember seeing this when these guys seemed quite a bit older than me.
By now I'm probably like a decade older than they are in this video.
This video brought back memories that I can’t seem to shake. I’m 36 now, but at 19, I had a very close friendship. We shared everything - our teenage struggles, our first awkward steps into relationships, late-night talks about life, sneaking out to sit on a bench downtown with a few beers, and just being carefree in a way that only those years allow. It was a time when life felt open and endless.
But when I started university, I let it all slip through my fingers. I was distant, emotionally closed off, weighed down by a depression I didn’t even recognize back then. He tried to keep the connection alive, reaching out again and again, but I was too caught up in myself to notice the damage I was doing. I didn’t understand what I was throwing away. I was arrogant, careless with time, and wasteful with friendships and people in general.
Now, years later, I find myself haunted by those memories. Not just because of the guilt, though that’s a part of it, but because it was a time when I felt a kind of joy and freedom I haven’t felt since. Despite my naturally melancholic nature, those moments were light, full of laughter and ease, even when life was messy. I dream of those days often, almost as if my mind is trying to hold onto a piece of the person I was back then - someone who, despite the sadness, could live fully in the moment.
Writing this, I realize I’m still trying to make sense of it all. I wonder if I truly understand the weight of what I lost or if I’m still fumbling in the same patterns, making the same mistakes in smaller ways. Maybe I am. Maybe I always will be. But this video reminded me of how fragile those connections are and how easy it is to let them slip away when we’re too young or too foolish to understand their worth.

I know that this is a video of two twin brothers, but I always felt like the video depicted two high-school best friends that are hanging out one last time, right before their high-school graduation ceremony, in their suits...
They know in that moment, that life is great, but that their lives will also probably be changing very much after that day. That they may not see each other very much again, from that day on, and that they will begin having many more responsibilities, etc. And therefore, there is a sadness about that day, as well. Which is so true about life...
Life can be great during our youth, but at the same time, life is usually extremely sad as we grow older. Life contains many beginnings, and many endings. And the sadness is usually stronger for many people, than the happiness.
The happiness of our lives, is usually at its peak, when we are preparing to graduate from high-school, and it declines after that.
And this music and video footage really seems to capture that feeling.
Aphex Twin said that the music for this song came to him in a dream. That doesn't surprise me, and it makes perfect sense. This very simple melody probably did in fact come from "the other side." It is such a moving piece of music, and really shows the power that music and love has.

If a picture says a thousand words, then this video says a lifetime. We can all readily imagine a vague outline of the lives that these men may have lived prior to what we see in the footage, and after what we see in the footage. Two friends, hanging out and enjoying each other's company, right at what looks to be on the cusp of major change in their lives. Maybe they just graduated school or college, and intended to move away from home. Maybe they were celebrating finding new jobs. Who knows. Life at that time seems so exciting and thrilling, and you feel like there's nothing you can't do or don't know. We all know that feeling, and consequently we all see ourselves in that video. The two friends are young, and so full of life and potential. There is an irreducible beauty and power in that. The music is at once melancholic and comforting - melancholic because we know what the loss of innocence feels like, but comforting because we also learn to value the stability and routine that becoming older affords us. It's crushing to discover that the world might not be as shiny and sparkly and exciting as your younger mind may have imagined, but, with some thoughtful introspection, an older mind can often see unlimited beauty in the quotidian. Sometimes, all the adventure you need is to see your partner smile, or hear your child laugh. At the end of all things, that is what life is about.
I adore that this video can convey all that.

The year this video was published I became best friends with this other kid. We spent all our teenage and young adult years together. We were inseparable. We learned to play guitar together and we did that a lot. We wrote a lot of music with the intent of playing with one another. We also had the habit of climbing to this particular rooftop and have a few beers there. Once we used a rope to pull a table and a couple of chairs up to the roof and we called that our own rooftop bar, to which we'd come back often. One night we went were hanging out like so many other times and in the end of the night there was one beer left. We agreed to get together the next night to drink that beer together. I ended up forgetting that, he called me and I didn't pick up. That night his heart stopped and he died. I still miss him so much and I wish we could have that beer together and I always will. I will never have a friend like him again.

I was born 1 year before this video came out, yet I still feel like I've known this video forever. I've cried to this video, I've reflected on it, and I've compared this video to the good times I've had with friends, and yet, there's a certain magical feeling that I have yet to see captured by any other video. This is the best youtube video of all time, and nothing comes close, this video is pure, genuine, and sad. I will keep coming back to this video for decades upon decades, and I hope that I can one day do something like this with my friends.

Every year or two, I find myself back at this video. I don't know what it is that draws me to it. There's something so comforting and yet so sad about it, I just can't put my finger on it. And yet I always find myself here. I think I come to listen and watch just to remember, to remember every time I was carefree and unstressed, on a metaphorical roof, drinking metaphorical beer with a smile on my face. It makes me miss those times. It reminds me that those times will come again. I don't know. I just love this video. I'm always afraid the next time I go to look for it, it will be gone.
