As much as it's a bummer that the rear wheels aren't as wide as they're supposed to be, it's good to see that LEGO is taking steps forward with actually making smooth tyres this time!
For sure. I didn’t buy the technic McLaren because it didn’t have smooth tyres. I believe Daniel Ricarddo also mentioned that in the reveal . Why it has wet tires
4:05 I believe the Shell pieces are printed because they get partially covered by that piece of the nose cone at 4:20. Lego were probably worried a sticker might cause clearance issues or get damaged by the piece on top
For the 1x1 prints, there's also the fact that they are non-obvious prints, so having all white 1x1s have the print makes the build easier because there's no chance of using the wrong one
Yes you're not allowed to have tobacco branding on items classified as toys. Also, the Mp4 4/4 did run at some GP's without tobacco branding as it was banned in certain countries even back in 1988.
The other reason they include only printed 1x1s for the engine cover bag is that they don't want to let you make the mistake of choosing the unprinted 1x1s for the bit that requires the printed ones, and to only realise after you've buried the printed ones into the assembly itself. This is the same reason why set 76906 (Ferrari 512M) contains 6 of the printed 1x1 plates when only two are visible when built. This is one of those building-experience-trumps-price moments that LEGO is good for.
It’s funny how other companies like CADA can make larger rear slicks and separate from the rims too, there’s should be no reason why LEGO can’t do this properly.
I'm really surprised they didn't go with the wider rear tires as well. They already have the new suspension A frames, with wide rear tires that would allow them to make a whole range of more modern F1 cars for the Icons line, like one of Schumacher's Ferraris from the early 2000s or one of Hamilton's Mercedes' perhaps.
Major problem is not the tire size at the rear but the croocked front nose. I still can't believe how they couldn't recreate a fully straight profile, looks like the front nose is about to fall off, too bad! Also the engine cover under the airbox is definitely too bulky and of course, as you mentioned in the video, those rear tires are too narrow...Anyway just the minifigure is totally worth the set!
As an F1 fan and someone with an immense amount of respect for Senna, this was overall a pretty cool set, sure its not perfect, but I think the tyre thing isn't a huge issue to me, and does a pretty good job at commemorating one of, if not Formula 1's best drivers ever
I believe that the feature that makes taking the wheels off or putting them on the car "faster" than usual refers to the action of changing tires/wheels on F1 pit stops in real life
@@RacingBrickthe one piece wheel design and the locking stud represents actual F1 tyre changes - machine first removes the large single centre nut, then a combined wheel and tyre is replaced i.e the wheel and tyre aren’t separately added to the car during pit stops

But that might be my interpretation only.
Other than the failed rear wheels still a nice displayable set. Builds a lot bigger than expected given the price piece and the scaling is great with the other cars in the line up. Nice to see functional steering on a smaller model.
I think they really dropped the ball on this one, the rear wheel size is horrific. Car just doesn't look like the iconic Mp4/4 and more like F3 or something. Shocker.
I wasn’t a huge fan of this set at first because of the smaller scale, but honestly? I think it’s won me over. The pricing is decent and the build looks really fun! I’m not even an F1 person but I probably will be getting this day 1!
I think they covered the one by one studs so all the one by one studs are the same so you don’t don’t mix them up and have to take the whole thing apart
I've got no issue with them removing the Marlboro branding, however it seems hypocritical to me when they're also releasing their Formula E and Extreme E Technic sets with NEOM branding all over them. That's a Saudi Arabian government funded city project that's evicting and publicly executing the indigenous tribes in the area in order to get the land to essentially build what amounts to a giant greenhouse in the desert. So Lego and McLaren will no longer tolerate the tobacco industry but gives blatant human rights abuses a pass and happily takes money from PIF...
it´s always the same. LEGO produces sets that I, as a fan of whatever the model is about, am really looking forward to but since I´m a fan I just won´t buy it because of course those details like the skinny tires bother me. It´s so annoying, especially for the price. When it comes to the Marlboro branding however: I get why they can´t do it but come on: MP4 stands for Marlboro Project 4 and the livery is designed to look like a pack of Marlboros.
Nice review. Things you’re saying is spot on. Already ordered Marlboro stickers and searching for rear tires. When I have all I’ll build it. Till then my box stays sealed.
My biggest gripe with this set are first: the buckled nose cone, and secondly the rear wheels. Concerning the Marlboro branding on scale models: usually decals are included, but not always shown, so that the car can be made realistic, without needing to advertise the model with tobacco manufacturers.
I'm way more annoyed that those new suspension parts don't feature a 2l hole, or at least a 2l axle-hole, than I am that they didn't mould 2 different new wheels.
As some who's spent countless hours looking at reference photos and scale models of the MP4/4, the nose is embarrassing and possibly the worst possible way to do it. The wheels are also a joke, they chose to give us 4 front ones instead of going for a middle ground.
This is a really good looking set. It is something different in the lineup, as this is truly one of the most iconic formula 1 cars in the history. Ayrton Senna was truly one of the most iconic formula 1 racers of all time. I am still trying to find a good deal here in the U.S. for one, as to me, it is just a bit overpriced (even though the silver pieces aren’t cheap to make, good amount of prints, legendary Ayrton senna mini-figure, and the new pieces). Thanks for another great review!
6:16 They are talking about Formula 1 technology, not the LEGO set There was technology implemented to help the car tires be swapped quicker during pit stops.
black half bushings would be nice, or some other alternative for that. and having the suspension not..suspense is an interesting choice. even if it didn’t flex, having them be less parallel (forced by the cross axles) is a bit unfortunate
I already preordered the car knowing the rear wheels are going to be a visual issue for me. I've heavily debated 3d printing a new wheel/tire to make it look more complete even though it won't look as good as Lego.
Besides the rear tires, that printed piece on the nose is what bothers me most. I mean, I totally get why they didn't do the Marlboro branding (and in fact, the car actually raced like this), but where's the iconic chevron shape? They did so well on the rear of the car, but on the nose it's completely absent. Why go trough the effort of making a printed piece if it's printed completely wrong? Still, I have already pre-ordered it, even when that was mostly just to get the Classic Space GWP....
I'm fairly sertain I have heard that Lego only allowes for each theme to add 2 new parts per year (might be diffrent for diffrent themes as they sell more or less set or not) buty it might be the reason that they couldnt make a larger tyre for the rears.
Looks ok from a distance and perhaps they could only make one mold for the new wheels. The printed piece on the nose looks wrong as it should be a V shape.
No tobacco advertisement is an EU law. From my understanding, you can't even race/display the classic cars with any type of tobacco branding. I think that's a bit ridiculous. I can see not allowing current cars to advertise, but certain cars are tied to their branding. Rothmans 956 is a good example.
That's what I was thinking. This way the white would have also covered the sides. I wouldn't even mind getting a sticker instead but they definitely should have reversed the colors
Did your come pink ? Mine came pink. I can't display the set because of it. Matter of fact all the white decals are a light shade of pink. Do they have any QC over at Lego lmao
Szia Balázs! Nice review as always. I agree that the tire details could have been more accurate, but it most likely won't be a dealbreaker for hardcore F1/Senna fans :)

The lack of width of the rear tyres is bad, also I don’t like the fact the shape of the print above the front axle is wrong (I can almost forgive print quality). Still getting it though
If I'm luck enough to get this, I'd definitely be looking for a rear wheel upgrade. Also the colour scheme - Have they made the red parts on the nose deliberately different to the real thing to look less like tobacco advertising?
I got too see all of the new sets in person (and the bmw too, but not the audi and mustang) They are really cool in person, I would defiantly buy, especially since they reduced the price of the double speed champions, and for the new bmw, it's 30 dollars instead of 40.
I give it a good 8 for the try, because all in all it is a good set, but it should cost 30 euros less. For that 80+ euro cost, you should have made way better set what we got.
I would replace the tyres with the set of senna gtr grooved tyres, at least they are different in width. It can represent senna who is good in rainy track
I can look past the wheels because the set actually excites me. It just looks more fun to build than a 150+ plain white Porshe, or 1930s era red pickup truck.
Doesn't the reference in the manual to the speed of removing the tyres refer to real life F1 tyres where the wheels are all integrated, rather than having a tyre that is added to the rim? Setting aside the size of the rear wheels, the actual composition of the one piece tyre is more accurate.
Would it look better or worse if you doubled up the rear wheels? Obviously there would be a slight divot between the tires, but setting that aside, would them being _too_ wide be worse than too narrow?
I’d have loved to buy this set but man the rear tires…it just fails to represent the car’s look in a way I want. I’ll get that off-road buggy instead instead because it’s cheaper with more functionality but I definitely liked this set better.
The rear wheels are unforgivable and ruin the look of the set. I don't understand how Lego could make such a huge mistake when they have already designed new wheels for it. My son and I where really looking forward to this set and are very disappointed so hopefully someone might be able to 3D print improved wider rea wheels for it.
the color of the bricks doesn't matter. the color pallette is not that big. it's obvious what color it's supposed to be. The color accuracy improves as your eyesight degrades.

You mean doubling the rear wheels like this? - th-cam.com/video/9SEB9UjmZcc/w-d-xo.html I think that's way too wide and looks funny, because you cannot put them in the proper position due to the rims.
This looked great in the store, but held off from buying it to do some research first. And man I didn't notice the details at first. Would've killed me if I had bought it and noticed the tires and pink sections. Such a shame.
Lego knows that people will thirst for more accurate tires for the next Icon cars which will keep us Lego addicts eagerly awaiting the next set I think. It’s good marketing, if they’re thinking the long game. Pure hypothesis. I know I might be wrong. Haha
This is not a Senna mini figure because the helmet is missing a dark blue stripe below the green stripe. The white print on the new red nose part is also pain in the eyes because the angle of the print is totally wrong.
Really disappointed the tires and wheels are 1 piece, I was looking forward to mixing and matching them with other rims and tires of that size. Dual molded wheels also makes it especially frustrating that the rear tires are too skinny as making wider tires only would've required one more mold, and wider tires would be so useful for everything from go karts to dragsters!
I plan to gift this set to my dad on easter since he is or was a big F1 fan. However the rear tyres bug me a bit since it shall be a proper display set.... I wonder if there are people who will give online tutorials to 3d print own ones or have alternative pieces that already exist that I could buy. I wanna gift my dad something but uhh dont want to disappoint him with smth inaccurate.
It is not bad set. Little bit pricy. Minifigure is great. But after building RoscoPC model of that car is better in every aspect. Sure it is another scale (1:8) and has technic insides.

I would have bought this for sure if they got the rear tyres right.
This is a MAJOR oversight by Lego.
Would have been all over this, but those rear wheels and tyres make it a hard-pass for me until there's a better option.
do you get anything special for pre ordering this set? ordered it a few days ago but just wondering if there are any real benefits to the pre ordering
I might get this if I find the period correct decals. And the right helmet.
It is not bad set. Little bit pricy. Minifigure is great. But after building RoscoPC model of that car is better in every aspect. Sure it is another scale (1:8) and has technic insides.
Nostalgic moment when you can see again Shell logo on a Lego set
