hello
As much as it's a bummer that the rear wheels aren't as wide as they're supposed to be, it's good to see that LEGO is taking steps forward with actually making smooth tyres this time!
For sure. I didn’t buy the technic McLaren because it didn’t have smooth tyres. I believe Daniel Ricarddo also mentioned that in the reveal . Why it has wet tires
Size of rear wheels is a joke.
Agree.
Absolutely agreed. The rear wheels for even the smaller sets are small.
Yeah makes it look like a Formula Ford
Not only the wheels bother me the white on red prints look soooooo of collor i dont like it
Its a yoke, a yoke!! (Fernando Alonso reference)
For the 1x1 prints, there's also the fact that they are non-obvious prints, so having all white 1x1s have the print makes the build easier because there's no chance of using the wrong one
An ‘Icon’ set that is actually iconic! Shame about the wheels, didn’t notice it at the reveal
The other reason they include only printed 1x1s for the engine cover bag is that they don't want to let you make the mistake of choosing the unprinted 1x1s for the bit that requires the printed ones, and to only realise after you've buried the printed ones into the assembly itself. This is the same reason why set 76906 (Ferrari 512M) contains 6 of the printed 1x1 plates when only two are visible when built. This is one of those building-experience-trumps-price moments that LEGO is good for.
Make a fucking ! In the beginning of the manual. Cobi has like 8 different Typen of slopes and stuff is fine
I wonder if Balázs will pimp up this set with 3D printed rear wheels. I bet he will.
I hope he shares the stl file too 🤞
"I will definitely fix that soon"
9:30 did you watch the video? :)
Or gets another set and double stack the rears.
he should it would be amazing
@@idonjohnson6999 that might be too wide though
4:05 I believe the Shell pieces are printed because they get partially covered by that piece of the nose cone at 4:20. Lego were probably worried a sticker might cause clearance issues or get damaged by the piece on top
Actually rear wheels are exactly 50% wider. 25x10x13 front, 26x15x13 rear
Where did you get those figures? Google says Fr: 11.75”, R: 16.25” Thats pretty much 40%
It’s funny how other companies like CADA can make larger rear slicks and separate from the rims too, there’s should be no reason why LEGO can’t do this properly.
There are more constraints that come with scale than physical capability
still doesn't explain why cada can do it , if it can be done it can be done simple
yes exactly why a company like cada can achieve it yet a huge company like lego were to lazy to do it
The only reason is money. We idiot customers buy anything, so why put a few more cents in product development?!
Yes you're not allowed to have tobacco branding on items classified as toys. Also, the Mp4 4/4 did run at some GP's without tobacco branding as it was banned in certain countries even back in 1988.
Yes, but make a rounded chevron like design..
I'm really surprised they didn't go with the wider rear tires as well. They already have the new suspension A frames, with wide rear tires that would allow them to make a whole range of more modern F1 cars for the Icons line, like one of Schumacher's Ferraris from the early 2000s or one of Hamilton's Mercedes' perhaps.
i wish they could just spend a minute or two delivering a wider wheel design
I believe that the feature that makes taking the wheels off or putting them on the car "faster" than usual refers to the action of changing tires/wheels on F1 pit stops in real life
I get that one, although I don't see how this new wheel design makes the wheel change any faster.
@@RacingBrickthe one piece wheel design and the locking stud represents actual F1 tyre changes - machine first removes the large single centre nut, then a combined wheel and tyre is replaced i.e the wheel and tyre aren’t separately added to the car during pit stops
@@MonkeyDawg I know how tire change happens in F1 :) The way the text is phrased in the manual means to me that the new wheel design makes the wheel change faster, but there's really no any difference between this and any other LEGO Technic wheel from this perspective. But that might be my interpretation only.
@@RacingBrickI interpret it that you don't have to remove the rubber because you actually can't 😅
@@mikosoft hehe, well Speed Champions and City did that already, so it's not the invention on the year either :)
Im a huge f1 and Senna fan, but Lego didnt do this car justice, the rear, the front, its all just wrong. Even his helmet. Definitely disappointing.
Agree, but im going to buy the set anyways lol
Exactly why Lego do this this, they know people buy it anyway so they don't care....
It would've been nice to see the blue stripe on the helmet
@@j1m909 They should have hired some F1 experts when they designed this set
@@matemayer4850 just someone with a pair of eyes would of done
Major problem is not the tire size at the rear but the croocked front nose. I still can't believe how they couldn't recreate a fully straight profile, looks like the front nose is about to fall off, too bad! Also the engine cover under the airbox is definitely too bulky and of course, as you mentioned in the video, those rear tires are too narrow...Anyway just the minifigure is totally worth the set!
Other than the failed rear wheels still a nice displayable set. Builds a lot bigger than expected given the price piece and the scaling is great with the other cars in the line up. Nice to see functional steering on a smaller model.
You don't know how much I was waiting for this video, finally it is here!!!
Hopefully, someone makes a if it doesn't exist already a minifig sized version for obvious reasons.
lego is releasing one
Many, many MOC’s out there. Just search for Lego MP4.
Thanks for the review. I’m definitely picking this up
Would the tires work better on an RC drift car MOC than LEGO’s normal, more rubbery tires?
Yes! First review of the new cars!!🎉❤
The suspensions are really interesting!
I think they covered the one by one studs so all the one by one studs are the same so you don’t don’t mix them up and have to take the whole thing apart
I have already pre-ordered it. I can't wait for your solution to fix those rear tytes
Just got it! Cant wait to build!
I think they really dropped the ball on this one, the rear wheel size is horrific. Car just doesn't look like the iconic Mp4/4 and more like F3 or something. Shocker.
do you get anything special for pre ordering this set? ordered it a few days ago but just wondering if there are any real benefits to the pre ordering
I wasn’t a huge fan of this set at first because of the smaller scale, but honestly? I think it’s won me over. The pricing is decent and the build looks really fun! I’m not even an F1 person but I probably will be getting this day 1!
Looks amazing, will definitely but It in a future
Can you 3d print the back wheels in there "real size", to see how it would look?
Such an exciting set but the issues with the rear wheels and the nose make it a sad but very hard skip
black half bushings would be nice, or some other alternative for that. and having the suspension not..suspense is an interesting choice. even if it didn’t flex, having them be less parallel (forced by the cross axles) is a bit unfortunate
I'm way more annoyed that those new suspension parts don't feature a 2l hole, or at least a 2l axle-hole, than I am that they didn't mould 2 different new wheels.
I agree with you, the rear is an insult.
Those back wheels are huge
In both cases, the speed champions and this icons set, the tires are a bit too small and thin. But overall it's a great build
the speed they are mentioning in the set is related to a modern f1 race pitstop, where they remove and replace all tires in under 3 seconds!
If I'm luck enough to get this, I'd definitely be looking for a rear wheel upgrade.
Also the colour scheme - Have they made the red parts on the nose deliberately different to the real thing to look less like tobacco advertising?
My biggest gripe with this set are first: the buckled nose cone, and secondly the rear wheels.
Concerning the Marlboro branding on scale models: usually decals are included, but not always shown, so that the car can be made realistic, without needing to advertise the model with tobacco manufacturers.
As a Senna fan and a fan of the MP4/4, which was Sennas first Championship car, I have naturally ordered the set already. I have several model kit sets of this car, including the Kyosho/DeAgostini 1/8 scale :)
As a side note, not all races approved of tobacco commercials either.
Marlboro reklámot legyártom . Nem érdekel az EU törveny!
Does the mini fig enter in the seat
You are right it could be better. For those wanting a more realistic mp4/4, Tamiya have it in a model kit if you are up for the challenge.
Looks ok from a distance and perhaps they could only make one mold for the new wheels. The printed piece on the nose looks wrong as it should be a V shape.
Beautiful lego kit if I buy it, I'll try to make an assembly video!
This was the first thing that I noticed when they announced it at first. Why are the rears so skinny ? Like I know they are wide, always were
Is it me or does the engine cover look like a great start for a space shuttle?
Are you gonna review the speed champions? I’m assuming you’re still under embargo?
I might get this if I find the period correct decals. And the right helmet.
My question is where do you keep your speed champion...???
I already preordered the car knowing the rear wheels are going to be a visual issue for me. I've heavily debated 3d printing a new wheel/tire to make it look more complete even though it won't look as good as Lego.
Once I get the set delivered, im probably gonna get my friend to 3D print some bigger rear wheels to make it look more realistic
This is a fantastic model, what a great tribute to the man Ayrton Senna … Can’t wait to hear the fix for the rear tires
I plan to gift this set to my dad on easter since he is or was a big F1 fan. However the rear tyres bug me a bit since it shall be a proper display set.... I wonder if there are people who will give online tutorials to 3d print own ones or have alternative pieces that already exist that I could buy.
I wanna gift my dad something but uhh dont want to disappoint him with smth inaccurate.
Yeah, I can't look past those rear wheels. I might even display it without the wheels because the wishbones look good now
Szia Balázs! Nice review as always. I agree that the tire details could have been more accurate, but it most likely won't be a dealbreaker for hardcore F1/Senna fans :)
I really really have waited for the 42171 review
This is a really good looking set. It is something different in the lineup, as this is truly one of the most iconic formula 1 cars in the history. Ayrton Senna was truly one of the most iconic formula 1 racers of all time. I am still trying to find a good deal here in the U.S. for one, as to me, it is just a bit overpriced (even though the silver pieces aren’t cheap to make, good amount of prints, legendary Ayrton senna mini-figure, and the new pieces). Thanks for another great review!
I'm fairly sertain I have heard that Lego only allowes for each theme to add 2 new parts per year (might be diffrent for diffrent themes as they sell more or less set or not) buty it might be the reason that they couldnt make a larger tyre for the rears.
Thay have way more slots than that. There is a limit, that is true, but they could have planned this properly.
As much as I hate the rear tires, I’m definitely picking up this set
the funny design on the front nose, made the car looks like a racing damage version.. Haha
Lego would never do it, but it's just not the same without the Marlboro decals.
This can be easily remedied with a few stickers from the aftermarket, I'm sure they'll be available soon
@@RacingBrickhopefully I need the Marlboro branding on mine 😂
looks cool but the rear tires look weird
As some who's spent countless hours looking at reference photos and scale models of the MP4/4, the nose is embarrassing and possibly the worst possible way to do it. The wheels are also a joke, they chose to give us 4 front ones instead of going for a middle ground.
Not a fan of the shiny tires. Might have to take some fine sandpaper / scotchbrite to the treads to make them look race-worn.
cant wait until they use those wishbone parts for a proper Indycar build as well. Im sure someone will make them functional down the line.
I got too see all of the new sets in person (and the bmw too, but not the audi and mustang) They are really cool in person, I would defiantly buy, especially since they reduced the price of the double speed champions, and for the new bmw, it's 30 dollars instead of 40.
Does your fixing of the rear tire by any chance include the use of liquid resin? :)
Not this time, I'll try to quickly 3d print (with a filament printer) a mockup to see how it is supposed to look like
Super fast to remove and reattach is a nod to the pit crew that perform tyre changes during a pit stop.
It’s your saving. A wider wheel on the read would mean two molds and less quantity per tire! Pure and simple, less cost more margin!
As an F1 fan and someone with an immense amount of respect for Senna, this was overall a pretty cool set, sure its not perfect, but I think the tyre thing isn't a huge issue to me, and does a pretty good job at commemorating one of, if not Formula 1's best drivers ever
Looking back, the years ago creator series ferrari f-40 just done so much right in the first time, they should get that designer to do this...
The lack of width of the rear tyres is bad, also I don’t like the fact the shape of the print above the front axle is wrong (I can almost forgive print quality). Still getting it though
Such a shame about the rear wheels. So much so, that it puts me off getting this set. Id never get over it.
Why no blue line on senna’s helmet?
Hmmmm mabye some drag car wheel on the back would look a lil better?
Besides the rear tires, that printed piece on the nose is what bothers me most. I mean, I totally get why they didn't do the Marlboro branding (and in fact, the car actually raced like this), but where's the iconic chevron shape? They did so well on the rear of the car, but on the nose it's completely absent. Why go trough the effort of making a printed piece if it's printed completely wrong?
Still, I have already pre-ordered it, even when that was mostly just to get the Classic Space GWP....
@ 6:17 Is a little pun/reference to a pitstop
I don't mind the tyre size that much, it still looks good
Like the set but real sad about rear wheels. Is it possible to buy bigger wheels?
Not from LEGO, maybe there'll be some 3d printed options
Looks like the store you kindly linked doesn't ship to the UK. Shame. I will wait for a brick link mod with better sticker sheet before purchasing I think. How could they also miss the iconic 45 degree integration of the white to red on the nose cone. That is as stand out as the skinny rear tyres in my opinion. Now if only they did red 5 and the Porsche 917
perhaps they should do the Jean Louis Schlesser Williams Judd from Monza, being as that was who Senna tangled with whilst lapping him, meaning McLaren didn't win every race in 1988, of course a gift for Ferrari, especially after the passing of Enzo Ferrari the month before
Odd that some of the new sets have moved to paper bags and others haven't... indication of how long some have been in design/production?
Depends on the factory, the transitioning schedule is different
The only way i see myself getting this is if there’s aftermarket wheels for this set. Those rear skinny tires look so damn goofy 💀
Is this part of the creator expert/Icons car lineup with sets such as the porche 911 and the Landrover defender.?
No, it’s a much smaller scale than those.
1:46 Truly a car with a heart of a brazilian
I think when I build this I'm gonna make or buy some Marlboro stickers to make it more realistic, I was dissappointed but understanding when I saw It at the reveal.
I think the white print on the red on the front is almost worse than the skinny tires for me. Couldn't they have done a red print on a white piece?
That's what I was thinking. This way the white would have also covered the sides. I wouldn't even mind getting a sticker instead but they definitely should have reversed the colors
Did your come pink ? Mine came pink. I can't display the set because of it. Matter of fact all the white decals are a light shade of pink. Do they have any QC over at Lego lmao
Doesn't the reference in the manual to the speed of removing the tyres refer to real life F1 tyres where the wheels are all integrated, rather than having a tyre that is added to the rim? Setting aside the size of the rear wheels, the actual composition of the one piece tyre is more accurate.
I just want the Lego fig, never in my life would I think we would get an official Senna fig 😂❤
My biggest gripe is the lack of the blue stripe on the helmet
I found out how to make the wheels bigger purchase 2 more and by more Axel's and it looks pretty good it is the right size as well
You mean doubling the rear wheels like this? - th-cam.com/video/9SEB9UjmZcc/w-d-xo.html
I think that's way too wide and looks funny, because you cannot put them in the proper position due to the rims.
love it . butt i dont like the the mistake of the back tire.s and malboro reclame
With this set Lego started a new themes ❤,
Hope next video gonna be 42170 or 42171😅
this is good set (im waiting w14)
Why didn't they print red on white for the front? In what setting is it ever better to print white on red?
Mine came literally pink. I can't even display the set cause of it. What idiot designed this set ?
I’d have loved to buy this set but man the rear tires…it just fails to represent the car’s look in a way I want.
I’ll get that off-road buggy instead instead because it’s cheaper with more functionality but I definitely liked this set better.
I think, i will go get one next time. ❤
I would have bought this for sure if they got the rear tyres right.
This is a MAJOR oversight by Lego.
I have the set and tbh, it isn't too bad in person
I would replace the tyres with the set of senna gtr grooved tyres, at least they are different in width. It can represent senna who is good in rainy track
Those tires are almost exactly as wide as these ones, and they are actually smaller
