Hi Rick....been a while since i have posted..have had some minor health issues that a good orthopod was needed..hard to age gracefully..and intact...lol..anywayz..good to have videos to watch as i recover...i liked the way you handled Al...he seemed a little distant with you in the beginning..but as you talked..inspected..and shared your knowledge he seemed to warm up to you..and his respect for you and your datum on these trucks was evident..i do learn alot as i watch these videos too..and as for you keeping this old work horse i can not blame you..there is something about the way they look..the way they stand..and as many of your subscribers have attested the fact that this harkens back to USA and our industrial might..made in USA 100%...hope to see a restoration series in the future...be safe..and have fun..Life is good!

My ultimate goal is to put together a collection of the "Work Trucks" put out by GM in the period from 1955-1959. It is a "No-Brainer" that I will be hanging on to "The Chief". I keep the dorky trucks over the Cameos...(Not that I don't want to have a Cameo or Carrier someday), because I truly believe that the trucks that actually did the work in the fifties helped build our Country into the great Nation that it is today. Our 1959 GMC dump truck has hauled well-over 100 loads of rock from the quarry to our property. My 1959 Chevy tow truck hauled over 50 loads of antique trucks and parts there. There needs to be a collection of these trucks preserved to show future generations what the men who returned victorious from WW2 came home and built. God Bless you and Thanks Fer Watchin'. -Rick

Great you got back out on the road for a rescue Rick! I pay close attention when your describing things and learn a lot of detail. I don't think you will lose money on NAPCO and a rare option one might be a keeper as you said.
Rick, that Napco has "Ram horn" manifolds on it in your video ! They came out in 1957 on the 283. The 265 has totally different manifolds. I'm not an expert like you on these trucks so maybe the 56 trucks in 265 came with the "Ram Horns" !! Love your videos !!
+Hank schaffner I am not an expert on anything. It is usually when I start thinking I'm Mr. Smartie that someone with average intelligence comes a long and makes me look like an idiot. I do know I have seen Ram's Horn exhaust manifolds on a lot of 55 and 56 Chevys. Hi Rick Thats a nice find, that rear bumper/step looks very similar to one that was in the scrap pile, from the old town fire truck where I worked 12 years ago in a tractor wreckers up here in Manitoba Canada. There are a lot of things you are probably going to find on there, that are above standard/ different specs for a fire department truck. I got a Perkins V8 diesel from a U.K fire truck in my old modified pull tractor, that I imported when I moved here. it has way different performance to the stock highway truck motor of the same time. An old Perkins guy from the 70's when it was made, told me don't ever wreck it. I would need another hard to find fire truck motor to replace it, Perkins tuned it for high performance. That v8 gas maybe the same kind of deal to.
Yes sir it looked a little rusty but Yea I can work with it, I love the skin's they look in great shape for the screen . You can sand blast the sheet steel do some Welding or make a great parts truck and the glass seems to be ok can reuse glass is getting very hard to get. But yea looks pretty cool . Boy what I could do in your shop fixing that up. Thanks for showing.

i would like to get a 56 chevy and 56 gmc napco 4x4 trucks both v8s and 4 speeds! the truck is rough for sure but to me a nice fixer upper and driver! just right for me!
That one has got to be a keeper. I would guess that it is still so original because it was a fire department vehicle, and because of what it is it must have been a specialist unit of some kind which, certainly in the UK, means a long working life with a fire department whilst having little or very little use. To me the sticker in the cab window suggests it was still with the Olympia Fire Department in 1975 by which time it was 19 years old and certainly from what I know about US fire departments, especially ones in more rural areas it wouldn't surprise me if it stayed with the original fire department for 25, 30 or maybe even 35 years and maybe even longer, I do know of some US fire departments that still have specialist equipment vehicles in service from the early '70s because the low usage they get and the high levels of maintenance mean that they are still perfectly fit for the purpose that they were designed for. And that, of course, means that the truck hasn't had the time out in "the real world" to get beaten up and abused and messed up and "improved" like most Napco civilian trucks have. I would love to see this one restored to it's Olympia Fire Department glory with as many of the original parts as possible retained as possible to make it a holy grail "numbers matching" truck and reunited with it's Olympia Fire Department history and documents. I know it's vulgar to talk about the money because you don't do what you do for the money as much as for the love of the metal and the love of doing what you do but I think the numbers the previous owner was mentioning are way off the mark for this truck. I think a "standard" civilian Napco restored to apple-pie order might well be a $50,000 truck in the current market but I rather suspect this one, being such a rare specification, back in original livery and with its history documented (IF you wanted to sell it after putting the work in, which I really don't see at all) could easily be a $100,000 truck and you'd still have to beat buyers off with a stick. Like you said below, this is historically important and with the history it is almost certainly a one-off, and if it wasn't when it was new it is almost a certainty that it's the only survivor. This one really deserves an owner who "gets it" and I truly believe she's been lucky enough to find one in you...

I like this one because it's very original looking the little skinny tires! Originality of it with the 2 speed transmission so you can drive on the freeway would be nice one to restore with the V8 to definitely a keeper if possible?
WOW!! Very cool!! This is the first 56 I've seen with a drivers side diff!! VERY RARE!! up until I saw this, I was under the understanding that they only did the drivers side diff "Upfit" on (ONLY) 1955 2nd series to finish using the left over parts from the "AD" NAPCO "Pow-R-Paks" using the Rockwell transfer case. and they started making passenger side diffs and Spicer/Dana transfer cases in 1956, so Im guessing this one is VERY rare! I have a complete drivers side "Pow-R-Pak" too. I just need a 55 "OR NOW" a 56 to put mine under.. cool video! Bruce 51NAPCO

nice save , cool old truck why is it that a lot of those old chevies get repaint the horrible light blue house paint I have a 1956 chevy half ton that came from wenatchi Washington that was that colour an I had a 52 gmc that was that and ive seen a few others lol I live in British Columbia by the way not so many of those truck here so keep ut the good work
At around the 9:00 mark i caught a glimpse of a modern spin-on oil filter.. the original V8 for '56 would have been the 265 CID "trademaster V8" and that would have the old remote bypass/partial filtering system. So if i saw what i think i saw, this truck does not have the original engine
It looks like it has the newer type distributor with the push down and turn spring loaded ‘screws’ that hold the cap on rather than to snap clips like a 265 should have. But the quickest indicator is if the upper and lower valve cover bolts are staggered to use the extra hole in a Chevrolet V8 valve cover gasket, that would tell you it’s a 265. 283s and on up had the valve cover bolts straight across from each other instead of staggered.John Wade TH-cam J town.

Hi Rick, Were you able to dig up any background information on "The Chief" yet? I was wondering if it actually was part of a fire department crew. I'd also like to know more about the hi/ low overdrive and the second shift lever. It looks like the OD is built into the the usual NAPCO transfer case instead of being a third gearbox? Is that the reason the front differential is swapped? I learn a lot from your videos! Thanks for sharing! Jim
So when you replace the cab, it becomes a different truck does it not? The VIN # cannot be transferred to the replacement cab, so, the VIN # will not reflect what the truck really was, correct? What I'm saying is, if you put on a cab, with the small rear window and the VIN# shows it to have a six cylinder engine, not NAPCO truck, somebody down the road might be suspicious???? I'm just asking, not giving flack, just wondering is all.
People swap cabs on old trucks everyday of the year. There are companies that sell brand-new, complete reproduction cabs, fenders, doors and beds for 55-59 Chevy and GMC trucks. Maybe you should be asking them how people build complete trucks out of reproduction parts and then register them...

I know where a 1954 Chevy truck is it is a cream color it has hardley any rust on it only place of rust is a. little surface rust on floor pans also has the original hubcaps and it also has the original tire on side of bed its a v8 truck the tag says it been off road sinse 1998its at an abandoned house

I like how people think "this is a $50K truck"....they kind of skip over the part of needing $20K in parts/rebuild and 750 hours of work.

All I meant was, if somebody was going to check the VIN# out, it would not reflect the truck correctly. That's all I meant. Yes, I'm well aware people swap cabs all the time. It's,,,,cost effective that way. Heck, I'd do it all day long. Why rebuild 90% of a cab, when one can just replace it.

I know where a 1954 Chevy truck is it is a cream color it has hardley any rust on it only place of rust is a. little surface rust on floor pans also has the original hubcaps and it also has the original tire on side of bed its a v8 truck the tag says it been off road sinse 1998its at an abandoned house
