    Aron Ra, if you happen to read this, I just wish to thank you for everything you are as a person. You have taught me so much in the fields of science that were not available to me while I was going to school, and your devotion to the actual truth has helped me so much in coming to terms with my lack of faith and love for knowledge that if I thanked you every day for the rest of my life, it wouldn't be enough to compare to the immeasurable ways you have improved my life. Sharing our planet with you as a fellow primate has been the highest honor I have felt in the short 24 years I've been alive. Thank you again and again and again from the bottom of my heart.

      AronRa Sorry to trouble you sir, but I would be very glad to know what evidence there is for there being more people alive now than ever, if you don't mind. I have heard this to be a myth from the various sources I check, and that the number of humans to ever live would be ~100 billion.

    • @AronRa
      @AronRa  9 ปีที่แล้ว +47

      +JustAManFromThePast I was just quoting what had been reported at the time. I have no idea how they measure this. They were apparently not counting people who would have died in infancy, for example. I also don't know what their starting point was. Was it 65,000 years ago? When people showed archaeological evidence of abstract design? Or was it traced back a couple hundred thousand years, for anatomically modern people? That info wasn't given back when they did the news report.

    • @TechnocraticBushman
      @TechnocraticBushman 9 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      JustAManFromThePast It it said that we're growing at an exponential rate. Take any exponential series of numbers and you'll find that the n'th term is bigger then the sum of the n-1 previous terms, no matter how small is the base of the exponential function. If we're growing at an exponential rate, then it is in fact true. If we're not growing at such a rate, it's not. It is said that the Earth's modern day human population had once dwindled to a few thousands in Africa. Then it must mean that the growth wasn't always exponential but absent of major wars and planetary wide catastrophes, it follows a typical exponential pattern (just like bacteria in a Petri dish or cells in an embryo). Of course, we don't even know how much back does the modern human date. Some say 100 million years, some say 250. I'm too lazy to plot on a spreadsheet right now so I'm going to resort to an image :D upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/b/b7/Population_curve.svg/350px-Population_curve.svg.png
      Judging by this curve, it sure as hell looks like the myth has some truth to it.
      Another thing to be certain of and Aron has made a good point of, the trend clearly can't go on for much longer (assuming we're only confined to this planet :D ).

    • @Weaseldog2001
      @Weaseldog2001 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      TechnocraticBushman I can answer this question.
      Prior to the agricultural and industrial revolutions, human populations did not grow at exponential rates.
      Human populations were limited by natural forces such as food and water supplies, climate, disease and predation. For long stretches of time there may have only been 100,000 humans or so.
      After the ice ages, human populations probably settled into the tens of millions.
      At about the time that Christopher Columbus set sail, the human population had settled again to a steady one billion.
      Aronra's statement on population is one that I also learned in school.
      And at that time, it was thought to be true, because it was assumed that the populations of North and South America remained unchanged from the time of it's discovery, into the 18th century.
      The accounts of the earliest Spanish explorers though, contradict this view. Ponce De Leon for instance, wrote accounts of encountering native Americans in much higher densities than were seen two hundred years later with many complex villages networked by trade routes.
      After his expedition, explorers that followed him, saw none of this.
      The likely explanation is that the pigs he brought, that escaped, spread diseases that wiped out more than 90% of the natives.

      Marc Norton Too bad he didn't actually do that. And too bad you believe that he did.
      More than 1/2 of men who use a public toilet will leave the stall without washing their hands.
      This is done in at a time when the importance of hand washing is impressed upon children from an early age.
      Hmmm. Seems when man is left to his natural way of doing things he doesn't have as much common sense as the raccoon.
      The black plague in Europe was spread because people did not wash and keep their homes and public places clean. So once again, it is not instinctive to wash and be clean. it is a learned behavior. and the ancient hebrews understood the importance of it when many people do not today. If you disagree, remember what I told you about men the next time one wants to shake your hand after coming out of the rest room.

Because there's nothing in the natural world I can't attribute to a naturalistic explanation, there's nothing I can think or imagine about a god demonstrating herself that couldn't be explained as a hallucination or illusion. But if a god exists, she should be able to reveal herself to me in a way that she knows would convince me. So that's all for my expectations.

    Aron, if you happen to read this: as a scientist, I appreciate your tireless education work - which, like many hardcore scientists, I'm not well equipped for this myself. You are clearly well aware of how the nature of science itself is manipulated by religion using human desires for certainty and difficulties in dealing with uncertainty, and consequent lack of understanding about the asymmetric and partial logical relationship between knowing and evidence. I like to carefully distinguish truthfulness from truth for this reason: I avoid talking about "truth" like I avoid creationist liars who waste valuable time, except with respect to mathematical structures where this is has precise meaning internal to a given mathematical theory. Science is systematically truthful, and that means not making claims of absolute truth, because it must always retain the right to acknowledge and redress error. Absolute truth claims are solely the purvue of, and a clear delineating marker of, religion; authoritarianism and its horrors are never as far behind claims of absolute truth as we might like to believe.

    The problem with Christianity is its martyr complex which was with it from its inception. So, since it was adopted by the Romans it is the religion of the powerful and this is true today. This means it is difficult for them to act as victims so they invent persecution from the very groups they persecute. People from other cultures and faiths or no faiths; people of different colours, various genders and sexualities. As minority groups incrementally get equal rights then Christians claim their right to practice their religion is being undermined and they are being persecuted. This is obviously not true as they still hold most of the power but Christianity's need to be both bully and bullied is too predominant. It is a parasitical belief that destroyed classical learning and if we are not careful will snuff out everything we gained from the enlightenment including the US constitution which was based on enlightenment ideals and not the ten commandments.

HELENO HENZO This seems to have the idea that intelligence goes down as life goes on, thing is that we know evolution happened and at one point we did have no brains and no intelligence our very distant ancestors were mindless single celled organisms. So actually yes some mindless process did create something that was capable of logic claims and reason.

    "Religion is a great way of hiding deranged behaviour. It couples that with behaviours that are just unsound, unsafe, unwarranted, and unreasonable. What is more unreasonable is asserting facts that are not facts, asserting as fact things that are not evidently true, and refusing to admit when wrong. Believing impossible nonsense for no good reason and then plugging one's ears when anyone tries to convince them otherwise." One of my favourite quotes from Aron.

      Sure I agree with the spirit of your statement, but science never makes proclamations of truth. I would even argue that it doesn't make tentative guesses as to the truth. It is a variety of methods to reconcile facts and a predictive *model*.
      "All things being equal, this is a model which can account for a set of facts and can make predictions if you give it data."
      This turns out to be quite practically useful but it makes no tautological statements.

    Trusting The Bible
    I often run across Christians who claim the bible is the inerrant word of god. They claim if there were any contradiction between what science said, or what their own eyes saw, or what their mind said was possible, they would trust the bible. [If they did not trust their own eyes, how could they trust their reading of the bible?] These people cannot possibly have read the entire bible. It says too many crazy things that they could not possibly actually believe, like the flat earth. Why do they hold the bible in such high esteem? Because they have been told over and over and over that it is the inerrant word of god. That fact becomes one of the features of the universe they never question. It is just something everybody knows. If they think about it, there no evidence of any kind god had anything to do with writing the bible, and dozens of reasons why that is highly unlikely. Granted, the Bible claims divine authorship, but so does every other holy book. I have written elsewhere how you can know for sure the creator of the universe did not write the bible. It is a human forgery. The quality is no where near good enough.

      Roedy Green I remember, once I got in an arguement with someone on my alt account and they kept saying "So you disagree that the earth is round?".
      I promptly reminded them of how the earth is described (A flat disk divided into four quadranths held up by god and surrounded by the firmirment) and they outright re-phrased the scripture. Their response was "The original hebrew said sphere". All I could say was "You're really good at translating a dead language". Then the topic was completely dropped. I guess they weren't really a linguist.

But believing it just because it's a nice story (which actually requires ignoring much of what that book says, but that's a whole other thing) isn't beneficial in any way. I was never a strong believer, but when I did think there could be a god, I was just frustrated by the ugliness in the world. I mean, all the ugliness still isn't good, but at least I know there's no magical quick fix that's just being denied us by an uncaring god.

      TrustinJC When does he use evolution as a way to disprove god? You cannot disprove god, any more than you can prove there is a god, and I don't think he is dumb enough to make such a claim. Evolution disproves creationism, and in effect overturns the dogmatic scriptures which the christian god is based. If anything it proves the bible is not the absolute truth which it claims to be, but does nothing for the argument for or against a god.

    • @TrustinJC

    Athiest rule and if everyone had the genius of Aronra we all would be schooled in the right way to look at religion as it is all just books that are copied or have been copied for years! The Zeitgeist if you look it up can tell you in10 minutes that from Egypt and long before it is proven to be only copy's of so many other religions but until you do some homework you will be amazed at how many times and other religions it has been copied. Religion is definitely not in anyway true but there will always be humans that are so afraid that religion is not at all true they cannot function as they have been brain washed so to speak and have no hope of seeing the bigger and proper picture.

    Since "Heaven" and "Sky" are the same word in most languages, living forever in heaven could involve space colonization with God's help.

    The need to believe seems to come down to one thing: the fear of death. It's so hypocritical of religious people to accuse atheists of having nothing to live for when it's their own religious beliefs that literally make life a meaningless stepping stone to an imaginary better world.

    I think his ultimate message is that denying and ignoring the truth in this world will ultimately prematurely destroy us and our environment. Religion promotes a mindset to ignore truth and reason. Time to wake up.

    Christianity is based on the bible. The bible is a load of none sense by a literal definition. Once you've got that into your head you can forget about religion and get on with your life. No need to argue about it with faith believers.

    Lol, I LOVE the pony-tail dude; he's my favorite part of this video: you just see him goin' about his day, holdin' up back-packs, walking behind AronRA, carrying out folding chairs . . . it's so cute. :)
