  • Is the newly released Pink Floyd catalog in 24/192 High-Resolution worth your time? Or is it just another reissue money grab? (*note: Dark side of the moon and The Wall only offered in 24/96)

I like the 1994 harvest/EMI remaster of The Wall on CD. It's not overly compressed and it's not so flat that you need a pair a 1kw mono blocks to bring it to life.

The 94 CDs are not bad at all

There is no 24/192 version of The Dark Side of the Moon available for download. It seems that it has only been released at 24/96.

You are right. Same with The Wall. I purchased them all (DSOTM thru The Wall)in one sitting. When I listened I did not look at my dac. I assumed it was the same as the others. I wonder if the version is the same as 2003 24/88 sacd. I know when I compared the downloaded version did not sound as loud and a little smoother over the sacd from 2003. Thanks for the info

@@archifi9978 I’m guessing DSOTM is the same version that was released on Blu-ray in the Immersion set. Maybe they’re holding back the 192KHz version for next year?LOL. I am surprised that the studio would use 192KHz back in 2011, it wasn’t that common. Basically agree with everything you said but it still is a bit of a money grab considering the inflated prices that are being charged at HDTracks.

No mention of the DSOTM non-release in DVD-A quad from Alan Parsons. I spent a week downloading it over a 1mbps connection and then reassembling it into a .dmg to burn to a dvd/rw. I guess that one was never authorized. My favorite? The old vinyl copy that I have that I used to roll joints on. I own none of the others but have listened to them all on Qobuz in 24/192 since they were released. I still have that dmg file on my very old iMac. Whether I can find the proper DVD to burn it to and that the drive is still working is a different story

Isn't the quad included in the immersion box Set? I have the box set, however, I've never played any of the surround content

@@daleclark4160 I don't know. Maybe take a look and a listen. To me the quad version tried too hard to bring every sound out, but that could also be from hearing the original for so many years. The sonic holography on the stereo version is startling when you first hear it, but in the quad, well, it is just another rear speaker sound. It no longer just feels like those voices in your head!

I’m going to have to buy the pre dark side versions.

These use the same mastering released on CD in 2011, but with NO peak limiting which was used on the CDs. Depending on the album, there is between 3 and 5 dB more dynamic range. The EQ is the same between the 2011 CDs and the 2021 hi-res remasters.
'The Final Cut' uses the revised 2004 track listing, and it appears there was some compression baked in to that revised tape because the dynamic range is inferior to previous releases. 'A Momentary Lapse Of Reason' was not recorded in hi-res and thus wasn't included in the series; the 2011 CD was fairly compressed despite its great EQ. 'The Division Bell' also has some mild compression on its download.
Putting those aside, I recommend all of the downloads from 'Piper' through 'The Wall'. If you're on the fence about which one to buy, I would HIGHLY recommend 'Relics'. The mastering of the album tracks is nearly identical to the hi-res albums, giving you a good idea of what those albums will sound like (the later albums are, of course, of much greater fidelity and will sound much better). But the real highlight is the non-album tracks. "Julia Dream" and especially "See Emily Play" sound astonishingly good.

Wasn’t AMLOR recorded on tape? Maybe since the box set and the “remix” is so new, the standard hi rez has been delayed.

@@archifi9978 I don't know for sure, but all the "hi-res" masters I've seen have have been fancy up-samples, not true hi-res. Either way the original mix wasn't part of the same series.

@@archifi9978 Well I'll be honest, I haven't dug that deep into it. I could be wrong. But I do know that 'A Foot In The Door' used an up-sample for "Learning To Fly". Between that and not being released in hi-res, I'm inclined to believe it's a digital recording. Maybe it exists at 48 kHz, but I don't know if it's ever been released in better quality than 44.1 kHz. Again I have not done extensive research on this album, I just know that the original CD has the best dynamics and the 2011 CD has great EQ. :)

@@instepwiththestars320 You are probably right. Much of the album was recorded on the Houseboat, so David may have had a early Digital Recording system.

The nice thing about these is that they're available on my hi-res streaming service (Qobuz) at no extra cost. I started working my way through them, but I'm changing from my unreliable ADSL connection to fibre in the next couple of weeks, so I put them on pause as I was getting glitches.

    • @archifi9978
      @archifi9978  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I have fiber high speed and I can be playing Hi-Rez in my audio room while the wife watch 4k streaming and both of us fiddling on the web at the same time...no glitches whatsoever. You'll love the faster spped.
