I am 169 years old, I have been listening to Pink Floyd since I was -2 years old and I've always been a fan. My grandson died from a cancer-infectious-AIDS disease a few minutes ago and he used to love classical music. When I listen to this Rolling Stones song I remember that The Beatles were better.

This is the reason to give Caesar what's his. I mean - thinking about those who try to knock down Pink Floyd technical ability and even wanting to make useless comparisons with bands who could be reasonably way more technically able...there's some music that simply has got some "soulful meaning" more than other music. And that's the case. It goes back to the spine, down the spine, right into spirit core. Love❤❤❤ Floyd forever. From years back, they're the ultimate group, the best in this genre. To see them live at Earl Court was the most fantastic thing ever.
for those who don't know this song and most of the album was about Syd Barret who was the founder of Pink Floyd but left the band due to mental/substance abuse issues. But he was actually present on the studio on the day the vocals for this song were being recorded. episode is related by Wright as follows: "Roger was there, and he was sitting at the desk, and I came in and I saw this guy sitting behind him - huge, bald, fat guy. I thought, "He looks a bit... strange..." Anyway, so I sat down with Roger at the desk and we worked for about ten minutes, and this guy kept on getting up and brushing his teeth and then sitting - doing really weird things, but keeping quiet. And I said to Roger, "Who is he?" and Roger said "I don't know." And I said "Well, I assumed he was a friend of yours," and he said "No, I don't know who he is." Anyway, it took me a long time, and then suddenly I realised it was Syd, after maybe 45 minutes. He came in as we were doing the vocals for "Shine On You Crazy Diamond", which was basically about Syd. He just, for some incredible reason picked the very day that we were doing a song which was about him. And we hadn't seen him, I don't think, for two years before. That's what's so incredibly... weird about this guy. And a bit disturbing, as well, I mean, particularly when you see a guy, that you don't, you couldn't recognise him. And then, for him to pick the very day we want to start putting vocals on, which is a song about him. Very strange."

First in 1976 (when I was 15) I heard a few sequences from 'Shine on...' as background music in various television films without knowing who the piece was by. At some point I heard 'Have a cigar' on the radio. And the moderator mentioned the band name! Then immediately went to the record store, bought the record, put it on and from then on the world looked different...
I love the way this takes you down the path you walk , you'll end up in dimensions related to being one big spiritual man and see imagry related to the depth of their songs and love.
Just relax into it. Don't try to analyse. This song is meant for you to listen to, here and now. It would be better if you had took drugs, but that doesn't matter. The story tells itself...
@@kdanielpeters59 Alive, indeed he was. But his mental state was not what one would term "normal", due to his drug abuse (LSD or similar) . I guess his bandmates already considered him "lost" from this world. A tragedy. Syd was one of the creative powers behind Pink Floyd from the outset.
The first time I heard this song I could not sleep so I got into my 1984 Toyota Supra and drove way too fast through Valrico and Plant City, Florida. Hopping railroad tracks and other stupid things but then 98 Rock played this at 3AM. I slowed down so I could hear the lyrics better. I remembered Mark Laidlaw a "Crazy Diamond" who died dodging semi-trucks in the middle of Highway 60. I felt at peace went home and fell sound asleep. I use Pink Floyd as a therapeutic.
I signed the yearbooks of those that I had no care in the world for as "Shine on You Crazy Diamond". I love this tune. I was even asked if I knew the year it was released (I do).
I remember the first time I watched this music video. Me and my high school buddy at the time in his garage, super high just staring at the TV without saying anything the whole way through. Key memory
That's crazy!!! A teenager with common sense, intelligence, and taste for legendary transcendent rock n roll!?!? Impossible! Cool kid, keep it up! Sean Black
This entire composition lasts 25:30 minutes, but roughly only 3:30 minutes contain the lyrics/vocals. The rest is pure musical poetry. Probably my favorite PF track of all-time. Every section, even the "jam" oriented ones, have clear memorable melodic content. Every solo can be sung. No wasted notes or noodling. Beautifully composed from beginning to end.
At the very end as it fades out (25.15) Richard Wright plays the Melody to See Emily Play which Syd would have sung "Emily tries but misunderstands." -Just something else for more poignancy.
Wish you were here is played so much by itself. When you listen to this album fully, you feel like youve almost earned wish you were here. By itself its great but in context it makes an epic end of a story.

Shine on You crazy Diamond...hell...it's even in the title...S..Y..D.
"You reached for the secret too soon".
Yes 🙌 so sad 🥺💔🥺 the lyrics, when I hear it ,it always brought me to Tears 🥺💔
man, the soundtrack to my young day's as my father had a big taste for amazing music and good LSD. 😀
Mines too, can never get enough good tunes or good Lucy's 👍
The most perfect song in the history of the world.
I'd say it's one of perhaps TEN songs that are defined by that statement.
And...4 of those are other Floyd songs...as well.
So glad that I'm old enough to have gotten to see them in their heyday...lots of times, at that.

Next time you go on a flight try and time the wheel's take off with the 4:30 minute mark of this song. The sensation of the plane as it its turns, plus the views along with this song is a whole experience. Make sure you have some good headphones
how in the hell would i be able to time that
@@A7Tones rewind to that specific part
@@d3fault1420 yeah but I mean I want to listen to it before I take off, then have it HIT as I’m taking off, I don’t want to just click on that as I start to take off
CADA VEZ QUE ESCUCHO ESTA CANCION SE ME SALEN LAS LAGRIMAS, LA ALEGRIA ME INVADE Y ES COMO SI VIAJARA A OTRA DIMENSION , GRACIAS PINK FLOYD POR ESTAR EN NUESTRA ERA
The iconic voices of some rock singers are just... unforgettable.
Well, i had one joint...but, never the less, you 're right

Great comment Luiz... Are you a musician as well as a Pink Floyd fan?

Simply the greatest band ever
The Rock Requiem of all times for Somebody as Syd, AMEN.
This is os the only song that should be played on future intergalactic flights!!! ❤❤❤
How much do you need
Lol
Possibly the most epic thing they ever recorded, which is definitely saying something. Incredible tribute to their lost friend and bandmate...
syd was actually very much alive when this song was recorded. he even popped in during the recording session.
Soars high and close to the pinnacle of the epic ^^

The first time I heard this song I could not sleep so I got into my 1984 Toyota Supra and drove way too fast through Valrico and Plant City, Florida. Hopping railroad tracks and other stupid things but then 98 Rock played this at 3AM. I slowed down so I could hear the lyrics better. I remembered Mark Laidlaw a "Crazy Diamond" who died dodging semi-trucks in the middle of Highway 60. I felt at peace went home and fell sound asleep. I use Pink Floyd as a therapeutic.
What to say after so many years, so deep and again ,a masterpeace
seamless, parts I thru IX ....the ultimate jewel and crowning achievement in the entire history of progressive rock
(or Karn Evil 9)
I signed the yearbooks of those that I had no care in the world for as "Shine on You Crazy Diamond". I love this tune. I was even asked if I knew the year it was released (I do).
Just fill your bong, light up and savor this long great trip. Stoner Heaven!
I remember the first time I watched this music video. Me and my high school buddy at the time in his garage, super high just staring at the TV without saying anything the whole way through. Key memory
Having known these guys for all my life, all i can say is good on ya! Shine On Sir. Madness is beauty. SB
Never stop playing this masterpiece ♥️🇧🇴💚
That's crazy!!! A teenager with common sense, intelligence, and taste for legendary transcendent rock n roll!?!? Impossible! Cool kid, keep it up! Sean Black
Pink Floyd é incrível, mágico...
melhor na vertente deles nao há!! Pink Floyd e foda p caralho!!!!!
Pink Floyd e cinema absoluto
Masterchief of musical history for entire but from the 13th minute i think that It begins the most powerful musical trip of ever♥️
At the very end as it fades out (25.15) Richard Wright plays the Melody to See Emily Play which Syd would have sung "Emily tries but misunderstands."
-Just something else for more poignancy.
Never heard that before 👍 well obviously I heard it but never put the lyrics of that song to this tune, nice one 👊
That little easter egg Richard added at the end is the reason why I nickname "See Emily Play" as "Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Part X)".
Wish you were here is played so much by itself. When you listen to this album fully, you feel like youve almost earned wish you were here. By itself its great but in context it makes an epic end of a story.
Dropping and listening was key
The timing
Para mim esta é a melhor música já produzida, letra, melodia, tudo nela é masterpiece.
I hear this song when there is nothing but silence. It haunts me in the strangest way. I'm not complaining.

this is a listening experience . mind blowing magic . thank you so much for being ordinary men .
A band, for over 50 years, writing and performing under the shadow of an early band mate. Sid Barret set their destiny. And, in reality, he never did leave the band. He has always been with them.
Pink Floyd will never get old. My Dad got hear Dark Side of the Moon at HCJC Planetarium. Flooring upgrade was rotating floor with tilted seating. FABULOUS.

@@EpicGamerXander Glad to help out, Xander!!!
I bought this album sometime in my sophomore or junior high school year in the late 70s when it came out. I overheard some of the stoner "cool kids" talking about it in the lunchroom. It blew my mind away. Before that, I was only familiar with pop music. Talk about sychroncity.
The opening to this track is one of the ealiest memories i have of life
New Classic, Pink Floyd💖💥
Has been my fave band ever ❤❤❤, since high school! Way back 1982
Fantastic piece of music

The whole album beats the night of the opera album
@@RailfannerTJM for me dsotm and the Wall better than wish you were here. All three albums beats night at the opera for sure.

LOVE Roger's bass lines - juuust a bit be hind the beat and so melodic!
Quite brilliant work , seeing that it's been nearly 49 yrs since it's release
Only Pink Floyd can go 8 minutes without saying a single word.
Opeth too
Maggot brain has like 3 lines and it's 10 min long...
You should hear 11 minutes instrumental song of Dream Theater, Stream Of Consciousness 😅
The saxophone is lazy and wandering. Really nice work.
Floyd at their very best. A classic. Shine on you crazy diamond.
