  • For Jon, wherein I discuss how Human Beings must overcome bias before we achieve societal change, and how the news is merely a reflection of ourselves..
Sidenote: I am not an expert, in fact, I'm pretty stupid, but I am a Human Being and I think the fact that I am one who happens to care for other Human Beings was the impetus behind this letter.

Well, you just went and melted my fucking heart.
Something I've been thinking about a bit is the necessity of tragedies in forwarding empathy to new groups. As in, seeing a group you do empathize with go through something, affords you the ability to see another group you didn't in a similar fashion.
I mean, I can make the intellectual arguments about two lives having an equivalency for which I should feel equivalently empathetic, but I don't remember that line of thinking playing a large role in my eventual realizations of a broader empathy. And I'm not sure I've ever observed a more logos-oriented tact having a profound impact on someone else either.
Which got me thinking about whether or not trying to prevent tragedies on the homefront has a larger reaching effect in that if it's successful, it closes one's in-group off to the experiences of tragedy from around the world.
And, I don't know. The entire subject makes me very confused.

+River St-Grey Yeah, it's obviously a complex situation. I think you're right in that a logical approach to pathos seems to be in some form of conflict with itself, and that empathy can expand through situations like this. As I said in the video, though, I think that we live in a broader community these days, and at the rate with which technology is 'shrinking the world'/'expanding or community,' out groups and in groups will begin to congeal into one singular amalgamation, which would obvs do good things for problems of empathy.
Then again, I'm an optimist, so perhaps i'm just seeing the world that way because I want to.
