Pretty sure it's Valdor Gold over a black or dark brown undercoat, with a thinned agrax shade and some nuln oil for certain bits and some tamiya weathering product (the verdigris). I sorta miss when GW was upfront about not using their own paints. The FW Custodian paint scheme is their best gold imo.

As a huge Blood Angels fan I am overjoyed with the video. One thing I want to add, enamel as in the one used for jewellery, which is fitting in the case of ornate armour, is essentially glass thats melted on to metal, as such if you want to go for that look specifically you could do a test model with a gloss varnish over the red bits of the should pad, Its definitely something Ill give a shot at some point because the idea is really good!
Short videos are great for some things, but what I love about videos such as yours and Richard Gray's is that you don't shy away from actually filming and showing the processes that you're talking about, especially useful for some of the rarer techniques like oil washes, enamels, etc etc. While those kind of processes aren't necessarily hard, they can have a steeper learning curve, so the extra 'peeking behind the curtain' is something I really appreciate :) Lovely models and paint jobs by the way, that banner is a stunning piece of work, and so quick!! Keep up the great work, continue to learn so much from you guys.
I really enjoyed this episode.... brings back memories of my first blood angles back in the late 80's... I might have just bought some warhammer 30K figures to paint...
Always love your content. I especially love the Heresy era sculpts. I know you do too so I have a suggestion. How would you give a glow up to each legion with all the bits you have. Especially the ones without Praetors or characters. How would you upgrade xyz army to look more impressive on the tabletop?
Love these Henry. Remind me very much of the BA Honour Guard from years back. Love the more utilitarian look. Great video. Added a few paints to my basket off the back of it.
I love your style especially combined with HH. Also - the irony that these days experts sharing their knowledge and techniques for free feel compelled to excuse themselves to be taking up 'too much' of our time - oh boy XD How about just a massive thank you for any minute you spend teaching us :)
BEST blood angels minis I have seen, ever. The coolest looking and best painted paint pot as well. All in one vid. ps think painting the black works really well as I have started doing that method as well.
Beautiful painting video you must be chuffed at the final look I'd love a guard like these mixed in with those landing figures making a great centre for a blood angles finish! Bravo !
Regards the airbrush pot cleaner - you may have stuck it in for interest but yours looks way more functional than my old one - found it in a bundle with lots of cleaning tools and discounted too. So thanks for sharing as I wouldn’t have known how ergonomic they are these days.
Love this take on heresy sanguinary guard, incredible. It’d be great to see you paint a praetor or some other character model, just to see how you’d take this scheme and these techniques to that slightly higher level. And then at that point you may as well bring it up to 1000pts of blood angels, if only to use as allies for your white scars. Would definitely enjoy a few more videos on this as a slightly larger project
Loving the Heresy content! Loving the focus on how to make TMM look nice! The only thing that stood out to me was the size of the metal flakes. I realise that on the gaming table that would matter much, but when you pick the mini's up it would (for me at least). I think Scale75 and Vallejo Metal Color paints have finer ground flakes and look little more in scale because of that. I have done some testing in the past and Vallejo Game Color metallics (which are not great) versus Vallejo Metal Color series was night and day. I am planning to do more testing in the future and will report back when I know more.
I can watch you do heresy videos forever tbh. I feel like I’m gonna end up doing every legion lol, but no I think I’m settled now… although the rumours of an mk2 box salamanders vs iron warriors might change plans. Heresy is my main warhammer thing now tbh, which I didn’t expect because I’ve been up and down on marines over the years. But it’s just so much cooler in HH, so much depth for each legion and the setting is awesome
I totally get the blocking out, helps me get a better idea of how much of each colour will be on the model in the end. Helps for minis I've never painted before because sometimes an army recipe on some minis can be overblown and blocking it out can help you spot it early
Phenomenal. I actually had painted up a few 40k Blood Angels before Heresy came out in plastic, intending to buy the boxed set for the beakies for my 40k army at the time. But I lost interest in doing any 40k space marines as Heresy 2.0 came out, especially as I saw Iron Warriors, Death Guard, Sons of Horus, etc with their interesting paint schemes and just decided I would rather paint for Heresy. This video has definitely made me consider picking up Blood Angels again though.
Thinking about the accidental Blood Angels army quote, you mentioned in the Baal Predator video that you might paint a character to round up the tutorial series. Perhaps that could make up your mind about it? (And would be so awesome to see!)
Wonderful work! I’m glad I watched this before I was going to buy the kit though, as I thought the banner would be a perfect fit for the large transfers on the legion sheets, but I guess it isn’t which seems like a big design oversight
You could make it work, but it would have taken more time than I'd given myself to complete it. So rather than do a rush job I switched it up. The fact the banners are often full of movement makes it quite challenging
Super work! Thinking about making the transition to oils - which of the Abteilung 502 Oil Sets would you recommend as the best starter set to cover the widest range of armies/ uses? Thanks
hi, a brown and an orange are probably your two most versatile. I use the ABT in vidoes a lot becasue they dry pretty quick, but when i'm doing my own painting i tend to use Winsor & Newton Burnt Umber and Burnt Sienna
Love the gold a lot. Gotta try that tip out with my metallics. Kinda interested to see what that gold would look like if you used a red contrast over it. Might make a solid Thousand Sons recipe.... 😂
Hi Henry. I'm wondering if you have thoughts on how to replicate the 'transparent filter' effect that you often use contrasts to achieve... without contrasts. Is it a matter of heavily thinning your acrylics before airbrushing or using a very thin oil filter? Or, in the end, is it just time to suck it up and buy some contrast paints?
a filter/glaze is just a diluted version of a paint. The only issue you'll run into is that some paints will split when you thin them down that far. So you can use anything you want to do it, as long as it holds up to the thinning.
@@cultofpaint Thanks for the reply. Would it be fair to say that you use contrasts because they come pre-mixed to the right consistency for filtering, more so than for any specific technical qualities of the contrast paint itself?
@@ndperseo7136 there is no one perfect consistency for a filter. But the reason I like the contrasts as a starting point is that they are already very translucent and often strong colours, that I can think down even more without them splitting. Sort of half way between an ink and a wash paint.
I like your interpretation, but also personally gonna be using the 40K Sanguinary Guard kit just because they're more like they're described in the lore, I've got like 25 of them sitting about, and their 40K kit is almost certainly getting replaced with a primaris version soon anyway.

I was checking out this video to see what size of transfer you used because I'm trying to find a place to use my white scars 30k transfer of the same size, so I'm sad that it doesn't fit this particular banner!
